> Woke up this way one day

lmao

> What stood out for the researchers was how rapidly the activity of clock genes changed after just one night of sleep loss. They found that within the clock genes, the DNA molecule underwent chemical alterations, or epigenetic changes, which are known to affect the way genes are expressed. In this process – known as methylation – proteins attach methyl groups to the bases of the DNA molecule in particular places. Methyl groups are able to control how the genes are switched on or off by regulating the interactions between the DNA and other proteins.

> “It was interesting that the methylation of these genes could be altered so quickly, and that it could occur for these metabolically important clock genes,” Cedernaes added.

/2015 article

A new study shows how just one week of insufficient sleep alters the normal functions of over 700 genes, causing a wide range of serious negative effects on your health.

Previous studies have linked a long-term sleep deprivation with obesity, heart disease, cognitive impairment, and other negative health outcomes, but the molecular mechanisms that lead to such declines were not fully clear until now.

In one of the first studies of the effects of sleep deprivation on the human "transcriptome," or the set of messenger molecules for the human genome, British researchers have showed that over time, insufficient sleep directly alters gene expression responsible for processes like immune responses, stress, and metabolism, which have a wide range of negative downstream effects.

 No.146036

The text describes "a woman clothed with the sun, and the moon under her feet, and upon her head a crown of twelve stars" (12:1). The woman is pregnant and about to give birth, "travailing in birth, and pained to be delivered" (12:2).

Then there is "a great red dragon, having seven heads and ten horns, and seven crowns upon his heads" (12:3) who is about to "devour her child as soon as it was born" (12:4). But her child is "caught up unto God" (12:5), and the woman herself is "fled into the wilderness, where she hath a place prepared of God, that they should feed her there a thousand two hundred and threescore days." (12:6)

Then there is a description of "War in Heaven" of the angels against the dragon, and "the great dragon was cast out, that old serpent, called the Devil, and Satan, which deceiveth the whole world: he was cast out into the earth, and his angels were cast out with him." (12:9)

The woman is again mentioned in 12:13, as she is persecuted by the dragon, and " two wings of a great eagle" are given to her to escape (12:14). The dragon attacks her by "water as a flood" emerging from his mouth (12:15), but the flood is swallowed up by the earth (12:16), so the dragon went "to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ" (12:17).

The Woman of the Apocalypse is widely identified as the Virgin Mary. This interpretation is held by the ancient Church as well as in the medieval and modern Roman Catholic Church. This view does not negate the alternative interpretation of the Woman representing the Church,[1] as in modern Catholic dogma, Mary is herself considered both the Mother of God and the Mother of the Church (while in Reformed theology and traditions that are averse to Marian veneration, the interpretation of the Woman represents the naturally predominate church).

Castitas v Luxuria

Also known as virginity & celibacy. The state or practice and restraint from all sexual interactions v intense longing. It is usually thought of as intense or unbridled sexual desire, however, lust could also mean simply desire in general; thus, lust for money, power, and other things are sinful.

Temperantia v Gula

Practicing self-control, abstinence, moderation and deferred gratification, Peace, restraint of power and strength over something that is smaller and weaker v the overindulgence and overconsumption of anything to the point of waste. The word derives from the Latin gluttire, meaning to gulp down or swallow. In Christianity, it is considered a sin if the excessive desire for food causes it to be withheld from the needy.

Caritas v Avaritia

Generosity, charity, self-sacrifice, To care deeply for others platonically like you were them, To have unconditional love and kindness towards others as well as yourself v Hoarding of materials or objects, theft and robbery, especially by means of violence, trickery, or manipulation of authority are all actions that may be inspired by Greed.

Industria v Acedia

A zealous and careful nature in one's actions and work; decisive work ethic, and perseverance. To never give up striving and heading towards your goals v ceasing to utilize the seven gifts of grace given by the Holy Spirit (Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Knowledge, Piety, Fortitude, and Fear of the Lord); such disregard may lead to the slowing of one's spiritual progress towards eternal life, to the neglect of manifold duties of charity towards the neighbor, and to animosity towards those who love God.

Patientia v Ira

Forbearance reflecting moderation. Building a sense of peaceful stability and harmony rather than conflict, hostility, and antagonism; resolving issues and arguments respectfully, as opposed to resorting to anger and fighting. v can be defined as uncontrolled feelings of anger, rage, and even hatred. Wrath often reveals itself in the wish to seek vengeance.[39] In its purest form, wrath presents with injury, violence, and hate that may provoke feuds that can go on for centuries.

Humanitas v Invidia

Being friendly, generous, and considerate to others and towards yourself v , like greed and lust, is characterized by an insatiable desire. It can be described as a sad or resentful covetousness towards the traits or possessions of someone else. It arises from vainglory,[41] and severs a man from his neighbor. Malicious envy is similar to jealousy in that they both feel discontent towards someone's traits, status, abilities, or rewards. A difference is that the envious also desire the entity and covet it.

Humilitas v Superbia

Humility is the courage of the heart necessary to undertake tasks which are difficult, tedious or unglamorous, and to graciously accept the sacrifices involved. Giving credit where credit is due; not unduly glorifying one's own self. Refraining from despair; the ability to confront fear and uncertainty, or intimidation. v The negative version of pride (Latin, superbia) is considered, on almost every list, the original and most serious of the seven deadly sins: the perversion of the faculties that make humans more like God—dignity and holiness. It is also thought to be the source of the other capital sins. Also known as hubris (from ancient Greek ὕβρις), or futility, it is identified as dangerously corrupt selfishness, the putting of one's own desires, urges, wants, and whims before the welfare of people.

> In responding to the mass shooting in Las Vegas, police made two public pleas that likely wouldn’t have arisen 10 years ago:

1. Witnesses were asked not to post videos of police officers on the scene.

2. They were also asked to hand over any cellphone video that might be helpful to the authorities.

The two requests highlight how the changes in citizen technology “cut both ways” for law-enforcement agencies, says David Klinger, a criminology professor at the University of Missouri-St Louis who is a former police officer.

> Having the attack and police movements documented by third parties can also help investigators get a better understanding of how to react in the future, says Jerry Ratcliffe, director of the center for security and crime science at Temple University.

> However, those good effects come with considerable downsides if the evidence is posted quickly online. Putting up footage of officers’ rapid response in real time can put them in danger.

> Perhaps the most prestigious institution Golden examines is Harvard University, probing its cozy relationship with the CIA. (While Harvard has recently come under scrutiny for its relationship with the agency after it withdrew an invitation for Chelsea Manning to be a visiting fellow – after the agency objected to her appointment – this book was written before the Manning incident, which occurred in September.) The university, which has had varying degrees of closeness and coldness with the CIA over the years, currently allows the agency to send officers to the midcareer program at the Kennedy School of Government while continuing to act undercover, with the school’s knowledge. When the officers apply – often with fudged credentials that are part of their CIA cover – the university doesn’t know they’re CIA agents.

> “In the 1970s, Harvard adopted guidelines against U.S. intelligence trying to recruit foreign students in an undercover way … they didn’t become standard practice [across academe, but], I still think those guidelines are pertinent and colleges would do well to take a second look at them.”

> That's what Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull hopes will come to fruition. Turnbull asked the country's states Wednesday to give citizens' drivers licenses to the federal government, which will help create a national facial recognition system.

> That concern is well grounded in reality. In March 2016, India’s parliament passed legislation giving federal agencies access to the entire Aadhaar database — all billion-plus names, fingerprints, irises, mobile numbers, addresses, and photographs — in the interest of “national security.” In February, the UIDAI was accused of trying to silence critics by filing a police complaint against a writer who wrote about the project's data security vulnerabilities.

> Indeed, Aadhaar's critics complain that the Indian government has been shrewdly pushing it into broader usage by requiring it for things like driver's license applications and renewals, and soon cell phone numbers.

> Last month, the government passed a finance bill making it mandatory for every Indian who files tax returns to input their Aadhaar number. Asked if the government was forcing citizens to get Aadhaar despite the Supreme Court mandate, finance minister Arun Jaitley replied simply, “Yes, we are.”

> In the future, Indians may be required to use Aadhaar to log on to public Wi-Fi hotspots, buy train tickets, access bank accounts, withdraw pension money, use matrimonial websites, and buy tickets for cricket matches — among other things.

Speaking to ABC Radio, Turnbull framed it as an expansion of powers already in place, asserting that as much as half of Australian citizens’ face biometrics are already available to authorities via their passport photos.

> Kalki (Devanagari: कल्कि; lit. destroyer of filth) is the nemesis of demon Kali and the tenth avatar of Vishnu, foretold to appear at the end of Kali Yuga, the current epoch. The Purana scriptures foretell that Kalki will be atop a white horse with a drawn blazing sword. He is the harbinger of the end time in Hindu eschatology, after which he will usher in Satya Yuga.

In the Tibetan Buddhism Kalachakra tradition, 25 rulers of the Shambhala Kingdom held the title of Kalki, Kulika or Kalki-king.[18] During Vaishakha, the first fortnight in Shukla Paksha is dedicated to fifteen deities, with each day for a different god. In this tradition, the twelfth day is Vaishakha Dwadashi and is dedicated to Madhava, another name for Kalki.

> That's why some have suggested that epigenetics—instead of or in addition to traditional genetics—might be involved. During development, chromosomes are subject to chemical changes that don't affect the nucleotide sequence but can turn genes on or off; the best known example is methylation, in which a methyl group is attached to specific DNA regions. Such “epi-marks” can remain in place for a lifetime, but most are erased when eggs and sperm are produced, so that a fetus starts with a blank slate. Recent studies, however, have shown that some marks are passed on to the next generation.

> Such ideas inspired Tuck Ngun, a postdoc in Vilain's lab, to study the methylation patterns at 140,000 regions in the DNA of 37 pairs of male identical twins who were discordant—meaning that one was gay and the other straight—and 10 pairs who were both gay. After several rounds of analysis—with the help of a specially developed machine-learning algorithm—the team identified five regions in the genome where the methylation pattern appears very closely linked to sexual orientation. One gene is important for nerve conduction, whereas another has been implicated in immune functions.

In wild ibis populations with no mercury exposure, same-sex pairing is non-existent.

Methane is about 30 times more efficient at trapping the Sun’s radiative heat than carbon dioxide over a timescale of about a century. There may be more CO2 in the atmosphere than methane, but by unit it is the more destructive greenhouse gas.

> Disturbingly, the new research, which was led by Julie Wolf from the US Department of Agriculture and Agricultural Research Service, shows that methane, over the course of the next 100 years, will exert a “global warming potential” that’s an astounding 28 times greater than the one expected from carbon dioxide.

> Al Jazeera, the Qatari-owned international news network, publicly admitted on Monday that it had installed an undercover reporter inside pro-Israel organizations last year in Washington, D.C., and that it is planning to air a documentary film based on the reporter's work.

> The announcement came shortly after a British government regulation agency said Monday it is rejecting complaints against an earlier documentary broadcast by Al Jazeera, in which an undercover reporter joined pro-Israel organizations in the United Kingdom. The British government regulator, Ofcom, said that the network's reporting, which led to the resignation of an Israeli diplomat who was filmed plotting to "take down" British officials critical of Israel's policies, was not anti-Semitic.

> The Heart Morass wetland has been found to have high levels of perfluorotoalkyl substances (PFAS) contamination from firefighting foam once used at the nearby East Sale RAAF base.

> Trace amounts of perfluorinated substances have been detected at remote locations like the Arctic, far from potential point sources[6]. Other studies have shown that long-chain perfluorinated substances bioaccumulate and biomagnify in wildlife[7]. Because of this, higher trophic wildlife including fish and birds can be particularly susceptible[8]. The Dutch National Institute for Public Health and the Environment calculated a maximum permissible concentration for PFOS of 0.65 nanograms per liter (ng/L) for fresh water, based on human consumption of fish[1].

> PFASs typically associate with the liver, proteins, and the blood stream. In humans, they have a half-life in the range of 2 to 9 years[1]. Toxicological studies of PFOA indicate potential developmental or reproductive effects[1]. Both PFOA and PFOS are suspected carcinogens, but their carcinogenicity remains to be classified by the U.S. EPA[1]. The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) has classified PFOA as a Group 2B carcinogen, i.e., possibly carcinogenic to humans[9][10].

> The use of DU in munitions is controversial because of concerns about potential long-term health effects.[5][6] Normal functioning of the kidney, brain, liver, heart, and numerous other systems can be affected by exposure to uranium, a toxic metal.[7] It is only weakly radioactive because of its long radioactive half-life (4.468 billion years for uranium-238, 700 million years for uranium-235; or 1 part per million every 6446 and 1010 years, respectively). The biological half-life (the average time it takes for the human body to eliminate half the amount in the body) for uranium is about 15 days.[8] The aerosol or spallation frangible powder produced by impact and combustion of depleted uranium munitions can potentially contaminate wide areas around the impact sites, leading to possible inhalation by human beings.[9]

> According to the story, Damocles was pandering to Dionysius, his king, and exclaimed to him that Dionysius was truly fortunate as a great man of power and authority, surrounded by magnificence. In response, Dionysius offered to switch places with Damocles for one day so that Damocles could taste that very fortune firsthand. Damocles quickly and eagerly accepted the king's proposal. Damocles sat down in the king's throne surrounded by every luxury, but Dionysius arranged that a huge sword should hang above the throne, held at the pommel only by a single hair of a horse's tail. Damocles finally begged the king that he be allowed to depart because he no longer wanted to be so fortunate, realizing that with great fortune and power comes also great danger.[1][2]

> Last week Qatar, a longstanding foe of Israel and a state widely accused of supporting terrorism, was looking likely to have its candidate chosen to become UNESCO’s new leader. In the end, a Jewish candidate from France, Audrey Azoulay, won the election instead.

> But she won by only two votes, with 28 states backing the Qatari candidate. “For the moment, UNESCO is saved from a Qatarstrophe, and that success must now be defended,” said Samuels.

> It comes at the same time as US pulls out of UNESCO, with Israel set to follow

> Australian Foreign Minister Julie Bishop said she shared Samuels’ view that UNESCO’s anti-Israel bias was best tackled from within the organisation.

> Expressing concern over the “the persistent and consistent targeting of Israel” and stressing that “resolutions that target only Israel are not fair, are not balanced and should not be supported”, she told Sky News, “Our view is to try and effect change from within the membership of UNESCO and other organisations.”

> Lugh's projectile weapon, whether a dart or missile, was envisioned by symbolic of lightning-weapon.[39] Lugh's sling rod, named "Lugh's Chain", was the rainbow and the Milky Way. Unlike the rod-sling, Lugh had no need to wield the spear himself. It was alive and thirsted so for blood that only by steeping its head in a sleeping-draught of pounded fresh poppy seeds could it be kept at rest. When battle was near, it was drawn out; then it roared and struggled against its thongs, fire flashed from it, and it tore through the ranks of the enemy once slipped from the leash, never tired of slaying.[40]
