The word Ostara is just one of the names applied to the celebration of the spring equinox on March 21. The Venerable Bede said the origin of the word is actually from Eostre, a Germanic goddess of spring.

Girl from Heidelberg, creating a Sommertagsstecken (1948).

The Sommertagsstecken (Summersday’ Stick) symbolizes the new life and thus the beginning of a new cycle. Each village celebrates this festival (“Sommertagszug”) shortly before Easter, usually on the third Sunday prior Easter.

Thousands flocked to a hillside on the outskirts of Luegde, North Rhine-Westphalia, Easter Sunday, to watch flames roar in a 3000 year-old pagan ritual called 'Osterraederlauf', which involves setting fire to wheels stuffed with hay, and rolling them down a hill.

Does anyone have an actual calendar marked for a typical year, or are we still waiting for something like that?

From what I understand, the eggs and rabbit stuff is still applicable to Ostara since the Christians stole it, and all.

Sacrificing to the gods wouldn't hurt, either. It doesn't need to be hefty, though. Only if you want it to be.

So go get a chocolate rabbit and leave some food near your shrine if you have one or in the forest for your ancestors.

Ah. Just like how I used to celebrate "easter".

Also how do I build a shrine? Thought that shit was for wiccans. If I don't have the time or money, ill leave some food in the forest (or the woods).

>Thought that shit was for wiccans.

Nah, our ancestors built places of worship to honor the gods.

My suggestion is to get your hands on some hand-carved idols of gods that resonate with you the most (Thor, Odin, Frigga, etc.).

Doesn't have to be elaborate, it could be in the corner of your home somewhere.

You could pray. It isn't exclusive to the semite cults.

But do be aware, prayer for the gods isn't groveling or self-flaggelation. It's like having a conversation with your kin, as if they're coming over for a visit.

Remember, Odin is called the Allfather for a reason.

You can leave offerings of food if you'd like (I suggest pouring out libations if you can).

HAPPY OSTARA

How did your offerings and days go? I set up a makeshift altar with my Hammer and Valknut pendants and a cup on the windowsill and made an offering of some beer (it was all I could get my hands on). Then I brought the cup outside and poured out an offering on the ground, and thought about the importance of family today; specifically, what my family means to me and how I can keep our bonds strong.

I sometimes have weird dreams after giving offerings, so if I do, that probably means I fucked up somehow (or I did something really right). I'll see what happens come morning.

This evening i gathered together for a celebratory feast and also drank a healthy portion of egg liqueur with my blood kinsfolk, even the ones i dislike or whom i know always want to take center stage for themselves with their little bullshit stories from everyday life, it was pretty dank overall because it's nice to have a place to feel accepted and blend into, this is why our germanic ancestors valued the family unit so much aswell

Hail to the gods, and may everyone in here have a fulfilling Ostara tonight

Mh my memory betrayed me a bit and I inflated Grimms misstep concerning the name ostara which is made up with the legitimacy of the associated being as a whole.

So ill backpedal and simply adivice to think twice about accepting all sources about her as there are loads of associated forgerys and conflicting points of view. More so then with other gods.

Offering something itself cant be wrong.

Thing about freyr in particular is that he is was originally a vanir who got elevated later on as he was important to the scandinavians, that means one of the oldest more local gods that were worshipped before the indoeuropeans moved in and mingled with the locals, brining along the aesir (lingually meaning literally post/pole aka a god whose worship is not bound by land and whose idol you can take along.) That is supported by aesir often having indian equivalents and vanirs not+associations to the earth and fields. Some of the few depictions of him show him with an erected cock-a quiete archaic symbol for fertility.

Easterrites are a paneuropean/continental phenomen. Freyr not really. Combining the two might fit from the overall thematic(fertility+spring)-but if it was done that way is highly questionable.

Im not as arrogant as that I believe to know about how deities react or what they want percieve and what not. So I would not peck on you because of that but if you got some source that advised to do so Id like to see it.

Now, you might worry about having missed the date-be mindful that spring is a rather broad term not as restricted and punctual as solstice and the julnights and that the communities of the antique while being in tune with the months and the year mostly saw time from an agricultural perspective. Climate in the baltics is a bit different from climate and time in england, so people probably praised the arrival of spring at slightly differing times too. You seem to be an individual practitioner so sincerity and faith itself tops being sure about the exact day in the month imho.

What to think of this?

East/Osten seems to be mutually interchangable with the dawn and shining meaning as the latter starts in the east with sunrise. Might that be the spring-godess Bedas the monk meant? The whole thing only hangs from this christians goodwill at remembering the name in the 7th century rightly from whatever people told him whose grandparents parents still had worshipped like this.

Prayer to Ostara, the Germanic Goddess of Spring

We hail the Goddess of spring,

of vibrancy, of stirring bounty,

of the waking earth,

that readies itself for the seed.

We hail the Goddess of sunshine,

and cycles, and changes,

and all good and terrifying things.

We pray for fertility in our works,

of minds, and hearts, and hands.

We pray for blessings,

and the gift

of hope’s manifestation.

We hail the Goddess of spring,

as Her bounty covers the land.

Eostre, be Thou praised.
