Where did this meme of "Greeks and Romans had a pessimistic worldview and regarded the gods as an obstacle to be overcome" originate? Is there any truth to it or was it propoganda to justify the carpenter cult?

No. Smiley. The gods have always hated you and everyone else who exists, Smiley.
Existence itself has always been Torture, Smiley. Reincarnation does nothing but facilitate spiritual torture, Smiley.

The gods aren't always nice, but calling them an "obstacle" is oversimplifying it.
The gods are like a dad, tough but fair. They take you hunting, they watch you scrape your knee, they hand you a bottle of peroxide and tell you to quit whining. They're tough, because the world is tough and they want you to be ready for it.
The Christians' "god" is more akin to a single mom, schizophrenically love-bombing her children with praise before shaming them for being born.

I don't know about the whole "pessimistic" part, but as far as read firshand from:
As far back as aristotle, greeks started to find monotheism to be the most rational way of thinking. Just like how there were "deists" during the enlightenment (basically atheists who tipped their hat to god for social reasons), the greek philosophers came to the conclusion of monotheism because, in their system of logic, it made the most sense, and so, the polytheistic gods were slowly abandoned.
That christianity popped up when it did was pure luck on their part. The greeks likely would have started worshiping a monotheistic god on their own eventually, due to the course their philosophers took.
Read Aristotle's metaphysics. It somewhat explains how greeks came to the conclusions they did.

It still would have been far more natural and in tune to themselves than what they adopted.

Christians have invented a God who is all-good, all-loving, all-powerful, all-seeing, etc..
To bad that's not how reality works. We life in a dangerous, cold, grim and flawed world, certainly not the creation of a good God.

You are free to belief this, but how does this fit into the asatru concept of a new world after the old one has been scourged with fire?
