I'm quite curious to what this board's thoughts and comments on the series is. Also things found interesting.

Um, I bought the 2017 edition on Amazon for $167 but I just looked and there now selling for $200.
I found someone selling it for a $134 bear in mind though the paper is incredibly thin on this edition. https://www.abebooks.com/Complete-History-Middle-Earth-Christopher-Tolkien-HarperCollins/22522232221/bd?cm_mmc=gmc-_-new-_-PLA-_-v01&gclid=CjwKCAiA9efgBRAYEiwAUT-jtJF1AElSZKDcAZgsLBSRW7hVb9jHoJAeGYHgNZVXPgeVboiDPcgQthoCLl4QAvD_BwE
If that's to pricey I would dig around on eBay. I can see some used single volumes going for 4 to 10 dollars.

Morgoth's Ring has some of the greatest insights into Tolkien's works.

Oh shit, my editions of Fall and Beren and Lúthien don't have that sexy spine.
What's your cover like? Mine's got paper fold with Alan Lee's art covering a pure black hardcover.

It's because yours is the American publisher, mine is Harper Collins. Was a bit daft not to think of that.

How do you find the hardcovers for general reading? I've always preferred paperbacks but I've been looking at getting a nice hardcover collection too.

depends on how well is it made so i cant generally say
sometimes hardcovers are so tight the book closes itself when put flat on the table so i use a clamp to keep it open
but i hate paperbacks because they mostly fall apart after reading it once

Gotta second >>2251 on this. I read a ton on vacation and its way easier to pirate a ton of books onto a kindle than drag a bag full of physical copies, but when at home a physical book is always nicer. If the book has illustrations in it then a physical copy is usually the better choice.

I'd say it's worth it if you already know The Silmarillion and LotR extremely well and you're craving for something more after reading them multiple times.
Much of the content is more like an encyclopedia, with lots of annals of years listed endlessly. Sometimes there are incredible new short stories like the tale of a mortal woman that fell in love with a beautiful immortal elf. He left her our of pity because he did not want her to experience growing old and frail while he was still a dashing young elf, the love could only have ended in sorrow. The story then goes on to discuss the relationship between elves/humans and mortals/immortals.
It's also fun to follow along with Tolkien's creative process and the evolution of the LotR. The series contains a lot of his more serious philosophical debates which are mostly left undecided and open ended, such as the origins of the orcs and the fall of man. I got the paper backs one by one over time for like 10-12 bucks per volume, in the end I spent a little over a hundred bucks on them all.

In the end I bought the boxed hardcover set for just over £100 yesterday, it came today and I'm really pleased with it. I have a couple of things to read first but then I'll go onto it.

How is it supposed to have worked out with Aragorn and Arwen?

Arwen turned into a human (or more accurately a half-elf Man like his uncle), similarly to Luthien, and died like a dog mortal. Blanda'ing up literally severs elven maidens from the spirits of their ancestors. Well, at least if divine exceptions are involved; Mithrellas presumably fucked off completely fine.

I think you're not making it clear enough that Arwen is able to choose to be a human or an elf because she is descended from Eärendil whose descendants are the only ones that can freely make a choice like that.

Now that I think about it though, if Elrond's descendants can choose to become human, why couldn't Elros's descendants choose to become an elf.

Arwen's case was straight up cheating. Live for thousands of years and then decide to be mortal and still have a few centuries to go? Arwen should have popped out her kids out while still an Elf, so Eldarion could have ruled as an Elf for a few millennia. Use the palantir to enact Golden Path, turn into a were-worm.

Eru is a dick. Ar-Pharazon did nothing wrong.
