I think the problem 8chan had was it was the 'flavor of the week'. It suffered from people coming in quick to be retarded, then flock back to 4chan where it was more populated and faster.
I don't post on 4chan's /an/ anymore, but I check it out occasionally. Not a week goes by where there isn't a 'ban pit bulls' thread or a couple catfag threads. Which, would be fine alone but they always spill into other threads and derail everything.
Luckily this place is slow enough to deter most retards, but there are always a persistent few.

For the first time in a long time, meta threads on all boards are now allowed on 4chan. So for a while, you weren't really allowed to have a thread that wasn't directly related to the subject(and you still can't say 8chan). Now that meta threads are allowed, maybe 4chan's /an/ will be able to discuss other animal forums.
On that subject, 8chan might see another surge in user activity. Rumor is mootwo sold 4chan. I don't know how much activity this board will get as a result though.
But this place really needs to be moderated better than it was if it's going to be more popular. I left this place for a long time because there was a few abuse WebMs on the front page, and even after reporting they stayed up for months. I even tried stealing this board a few times just to get rid of it.
