My favorite ones are the HG101 books (too bad the main site became SJW garbage in the past couple years) and Raph Koster's "Theory of Fun for Game Design". He's one of the few who "gets it" when it comes to development. I've never made any of my own games, though, so I can't be sure what else is good.
