297 posts have been made on private boards in the past hour. That is, boards that don't show up in the board list and can only be accessed if somebody gives you a link to them. That seems like more activity than one would expect. What's going on in these hidden communities that makes them so active?

My best guess is political activism. You can post almost anything on 8chan, but there are still good reasons why you might want to be careful about what you post, namely, that this place is probably being monitored by a number of hostile groups (both institutional and not).

Other somewhat likely candidates are file-sharing communities, honeypot cults, raid/infiltration groups. Assuming that there are only a few active private boards, the high number of posts per hour could suggest either that they're mostly used as chatrooms (low effort put into each post) or they have a lot of users.

One thing I find weird is that over the years, nobody has leaked the link or even a screenshot from those boards. You would expect at least a few users, maybe trying to get revenge on the mods for banning them (happens on every board), telling everyone about what's going on in their private board. But as far as I know, nothing like that has happened yet.

Maybe some kind of cult?

That would explain why people are active on the board and won't leak it

In the past 3 hours, public PPH has risen by about 74% and private PPH has risen by about 71%. This would seem to imply that most of the private posters are Americans, which rules out certain forms of political activism, for example people living under third-world regimes trying to communicate undetected.

To the anon who suggested that the private boards must be managed by 8chan staff because there's no option to make the board private during the creation process: any board owner can de-index his board from the settings page.

(As for why the Mandela effect thread is featured… I guess someone thought it was important enough to pay for a spot on the front page.)

Posting on a private board wouldn't protect you from the government anyway, since they can intercept the data as it enters and leaves the country, and your only form of protection would be the standard https encryption, which can probably be broken. I believe that level of activism requires stronger privacy measures, like Tor for example.

Could be a number of things.

Closed communities that simply don't want total strangers showing up

Raid/doxxing/cp/schizo-trolling boards that don't want randoms exposing them and staff shutting them down

Political/fringe bunker boards that don't want to get flooded with cp and shut down, be astroturfed and branded as toxic cesspools, or be the target of false flag attacks and get branded as dangerous hate groups

>like Tor

8chan has a tor portal though.

I know one fairly active unlisted board. It used to be publicly listed and was even in the top50, but the board owner got bored of the occasional raid and the community was rather insular so he delisted, causing no harm to the board or its community.

there is absolutely nothing interesting that happens there. they talk about shitty cartoons and drawings, and blog and circlejerk a little.

that doesn't make any sense, because any board centered around "internet raids" or activism or what have you attracts histrionic personalities

>>53798

this makes sense, but it doesn't explain the uptick in PPH at the same time as /pol/ shooters

the insular community boards wouldn't get a slurry of activity for something unrelated.

now that I think about it, it could be bots.

but why would someone create a private board and then flood it with bot posts? would explain the uptick with PPH however, we all know /pol/ has bots

2020 is around the corner and every shit for brains organisation or company that doesn't understand Basic HumInt is busy setting up 12 months worth of raiding and disinformation, as they don't realise the need to be aiming for 2024.

The same sort who says "I want THIS to be true so get me information that supports MY preconception," instead of, "keep them talking so we can remain aware of what information is moving and what people may know is true that we might not, so we can investigate those things if relevant."

They dont understand the information would likely love to give itself to them for free if they would stop trying to dictate what it is, or fucking with it making it move elsewhere.
