You don't because, you then realize, Cal Arts style cartoons are all the rage now (low effort garbage) and that, if even Might No. 9's original art was going to be the abomination that it was had there not been sufficient backlash, you realize, you art isn't so bad.

Anyhow, if that pic. related is yours I'd say, even if you're going for the "somewhat a cartoon" vibe, you should still focus on your anatomy. There's just something jarrying how the hair, eyes, and body work together. I also questio if you should shade underneath the right (her left) arpit since, if the light is coming from above, it would be blocked by her breasts.

Coincidence that there's a new game coming out that looks like you drew it, or vice versa. You just have a different expectation for your art, anon. It doesn't mean it's bad, as long as you use it right.

I'm also a professional industry artist. This anon is right. I'll also add if you're having issues with perspective consider either blocking out your idea in a 3d program or getting an existing pose model and tracing over screenshots of either. Trust me whilst it is cheating it gets the job done and its perfectly reasonable and legal to do it as long as its either your own work or royalty free models you have a license for (make human for example is free you can then pose it using mixamo).

I will say though animating is and always will be a bitch. I get it though its easy to get discouraged because of how absolutely fucked the industry is right now but don't worry because its as equally fucked as every other industry right now thanks to coronachan. Keep going.

I have an old friend who is a professional and somewhat famous 2d artist in a certain niche since the mid 2000s (he also draws video game characters but never worked on video games, he's on DeviantArt and makes a living mostly of drawing comissions plus occasional contract industry work).

Since we used to live in the same city, I've been to his house a few times and watched him working. Every published art he draws is traced. All of it, literally everything since his early days. We talked a lot about it, he doesn't consider it cheating since the entire industry does it (or the equivalent of tracing in other fields).

Funny thing, he is able to draw characters and poses without any tracing that in my layman's opinion (I can't draw or animate anything better than crude stick figures) are perfectly fine and as good as any of his other works, but for his standards his non-traced art is always shit and not even worthy of publishing in a gallery.

The concept that "tracing is cheating" is a lie from amateur artists to try and keep their field noncompetitive, the reality is that all art is inherently drawn from reference, and while yes there is something to say about wholesale tracing something and trying to pass it off as your own without actually learning anything. It's a rejection of the nature of utilization of poses and reference where all art is derived from, and literally anyone worth a shit could tell you is mandatory for actually learning.

"Drawing without reference" is just Drawing with references in your head, and anyone trying to claim otherwise is a dumb motherfucker.

It's like trying to hammer a nail with your bare hand, we have hammers for a reason.

Never. I probably stil could make or into the gaming industry without even changing my major.

Instead, I got serious about my career and realized that the games industry is simultaneously the worst paying, worst treated, and most demanding programming job there is. Literally any other industry is a better place for a computer engineer. If I ever want to make games that bad I can do it on the side, once I have a $100,000 salary in a place I want to live instead of scraping by in the Californian hellscape on $20,000 a year.

My art does suck monkey dick, though.

For the record, and just in case anyone is genuinely interested in knowing, tracing is a technique that's very old and was first used with glass panels. The purpose of it was to quickly create many copies of a single work with or without variations.

Today, it is used widely in the art industry, especially in conjunction with 3d modelling, again, for the purpose of being able to create art pieces as fast as possible. Very, very few artists today use live models to pose for their works.

What is the best program to use for tracing? I've actually been wanting to trace art for a while now in order to quickly generate assets to use in development, but not knowing where to start on the software side of things is bothering me.

you're right actually the example shown is the bad kind of tracing as the pose and the composition were wholesale stolen without legal rights to use it. If you are going to trace it has to be work that you own or have free right to trace.

By the way if you think that 3d art can't also be created the same way you're wrong, most sculpts in AAA games are nearly always done with modular base meshes they are rarely modelled from scratch. Of course if the AAA studio were rich enough they'd just scan shit which is even more lazy as all you're doing then is a standard retopo.

When you realise how games are made now it really makes you appreciate the artistry of older games. Sadly most of that knowledge is lost to us because the industry and the market demands cheap and fast shit. If you want to have a career you get forced into working this way.

I've seen illustrators do it the old fashioned way and its insane to see how they work. But I could easily match their quality by 3d modelling first and then tracing my model and get it done much faster. That said its gonna show in my technique that I haven't the single fucking clue how to refine the art. My strongest point is texturing and I've been taught by concept art training that combining texturing methods and photo manip makes it also stupidly easy to do again because no one draws shit anymore they just fake it. It'll be even worse when AI starts taking over.

cheating isn't a substitute for fundies and it becomes obvious very quickly when someone does not have actual drawing & design skills. once you are a skilled artist, it becomes a valuable shortcut for shitting out images very quickly but until that point you are just robbing yourself of progression. at least half of the reason every game looks like shit now is because of brainlets following this meme advice, the other half is nepotism. if you want to survive the cultural revolution and not get overlooked on the basis of having the incorrect pronouns/genitals/skin color, you need to become a superior artist.
