Should I play So Long, My Love or SW PS4? I saw the PS4 game was fairly disliked in japan and is heavily discounted, meanwhile SLML seems fairly well liked all around.

Also, is it one of those cases where the old games combat had more depth?

I didn't play much of So Long, My Love, but I did a playthrough of the PS4 game. I'd say the PS4 game is easier for a newcomer to approach because SLML has time pass as you do things in the more VN-like portions of the game (which are the best parts of both games).

In terms of actual gameplay SLML is probably better. PS4 plays like a dumb action game with less depth than a standard Musou whereas SLML has a strategy style that can be likened to Valkyria Chronicles or Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. in terms of how it plays. What I've played seemed a bit too braindead for such a lofty comparison, but to be fair I only played the gameplay proper for Chapter 1, which is basically just a tutorial. The gameplay might develop depth as it goes on, but of what I experienced I wouldn't recommend either game's actual gameplay. Characters and story (and setting if you're a disgusting steampunkfag) appear to be the primary draws to both games.

I wish the PS4 game had a proper hard mode. Combat looked serviceable but it, like the mechs, seems like it’s only there to string the character drama moments together. Kinda sad considering how cool the designs are.
