~10 years ago was truly the last good time for high-end computing where you could get quality parts for not a whole lot. I went from a 4850 512MB to 5850 1GB and that was a huge step up with my Phenom II x4 940. 1st gen i7 (930?) was a big jump over Core 2 processors, and you can use Sandy Bridge chips today with no issue.
Thankfully all games are shit these days so you don't need anything more than a quad core and an old mid range GPU to enjoy older titles.
