What are some really good atmospheric games? Im so tired of multiplayer bullshit and just want a really good and immersive single player experience that also isnt just non stop faggot 4th wall breaking quirky reddit shitposting. Horror, action, drama whatever. Just something that takes itself seriously and isnt insecure

STALKER obviously. EYE is also really weirdly good at getting you into the universe, which is impressive considering how none of it makes any fucking sense whatsoever.

If you've never played a PC point and click adventure game, I can highly recommend The Journeyman Project, because I'v never really played a PC adventure game before and I Loved it.

I really want to play the 2 sequels now.

Also I'm playing Marathon 1. All 3 Marathon games are open source so you don't even need to priate them since it's legal to just download them here.

https://alephone.lhowon.org/

If Doom can be discibled as "The story is expected, but it's not as important as the gameplay"

Then Marathon is kind of the opposite since I think the computer text i'm reading from this Rampant AI is fantastic, and I want to keep playing just to read what philosophical bullshit it's going to say next.

>What are some really good atmospheric games?

secret world legends. it's a mmo but pretty dead by now, and zone population was set low on purpose to begin with, so always felt more like a SP game. it's f2p and the story is free, so you don't even have to deal with the mmo parts.

Anything with pre rendered backgrounds honestly

Try out Dark Messiah, Arx Fatalis Max Payne 1/2, the first Diablo, Underrail, Silent Hill series, Thief 1/2, Shadow of the Colossus, F.E.A.R, Kings Field, The Quest, Might&Magic series, Gothic 1/2, Endless series, Wheel of Time, Black&White 1/2, Medieval 2 Total War, Waxworks, World of Horror, Harvester, Call of Cthulhu, Vampire the Masquerade: Bloodlines, Arcanum, Nocturne

I really miss the 90s and early 00s, nothing but hacks that can't set a tone or an atmosphere nowadays, everything is just generic Hollywood shit.

Frozen Synapse has very well designed sound, graphical and gameplay aspects that all come together to form a nice coherent feeling.

Mad Max was a pretty nice one in regards to atmosphere, the driving elements are superb and luckily it is the majority of what you do, there is also some on foot elements with Arkham combat which is pretty mediocre however it sticks out like a sore thumb when put besides the very polished vehicle gameplay.

S.T.A.L.K.E.R of course is extremely atmospheric.

Dwarf Fortress is maximum comfy after a while when you've gotten your bearings, but it's not as much a complete experience.

Return of the Obra Dinn if you have the patience to do actual detective work which you will after a certain point in the game.

Ass Defect trilogy was great, but got increasingly worse plot wise and with a disgusting ending which takes the air out of all the great experiences, at least for me.

Thief 1&2 is very well designed both in sound, presentation and world building.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance, was developed with love and care for the setting and it shows.

Mudrunner/Spintires if you just want to simulate rural slav life with heavy machinery.

Yakuza series has some amazing art direction and story with gameplay to boot.

Alien: Isolation if you need a fix of first person horror survival.

Darkest Dungeon is supremely immersive, the guys behind sound and music knew what they were doing, not to mention Wayne June's sublime performance as the narrator.

Homeworld series, "No one's left, everything's gone."

LISA for a life ruining experience.

Just on the top of my head, these are some games that stuck with me a long time. Will probably think of more, I'll come back if it's anything worthwhile.

Legacy of Kain series

Unreal (original, not Tournament)

Deus Ex

.hack first series, if you're up for a different sort of immersion (taps on the fourth wall, assuming that you the player are a character in the game)

Jak series (break the fourth wall a few times for humor but nails the atmosphere)

Beyond Good and Evill

If you're done with that play Eternal X http://eternal.bungie.org/ and Rubicon X http://www.marathonrubicon.com/

Don't tell anyone but Bungie staff worked on both of these, Eternal X is basically Marathon 4 Rubicon X could be seen as a sequel too

>Gothic 1/2

Wholeheartedly support this one. It's compared to Morrowind very often because they're both easily breakable if you know what you're doing, but the characters are very down to earth, quest outcomes matter, and it makes the world feel that much more alive. For much of the story, you're not expected to fight everything on your path and usually can't. Frequently there's creative and interesting ways for you to deal with this.

I'd recommend the two Yomawari games and Paranormal Syndrome. They're top down horror games so I don't know if that's what you were looking for, but I think that both were really good at immersing you in Japanese locales: in PS the final level is a Japanese ryokan inn and atmospheric as hell

Morrowind

I recommend to use the the watercolor texture pack if you are playing through mostly unmodded or the recently made Intelligent textures pack if you want to play with more mods, shaders, etc.

Speaking of Bungie, for Halo ODST, the atmosphere of roaming around New Mombassa at night with the neon glow of signs and displays and the flickering of burning buildings and following the city's AI changing streetsigns and traffic signals to direct you (don't use the navpoint/map system) is absolutely sublime.

Easily some of the best music tracks in vidya, most of them with a wonderfully melancholic Noire theme to them (Due to how the game's dynamic music system works the tracks are spliced up in the OST, note the specific times I list)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a70h0cX8AMM (First 3 minutes is orgasmic, 4:45 onwards is atmospheric to a lesser extent)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=utg1wmeToNc (Up to 3:50)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AQRH6kLMa1k (up to 1:25, resumes at 2:15 onwards)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmWbQTtt2dY (up to 1:44,, resumes at 2:45 onwards)

And then the finale track where it transitions from noire atmospheric stuff to bombastic and switches between them on the fly to symbolize escaping the city https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FpgKoJJKRXI (up to 2:40)

Even if you give 0 shits about Halo, if you like atmosphere in games and want something to zone out to and get melancholy too on a lonely, cloudy/rainy day, ODST is the game for you.

Now before you guys freak out, hear me out. Hellblade is not a particularly good video game but it does boast amazing sound design and direction and the game itself is pretty good looking. The combat is the least passable thing they could have done and the puzzles get old quickly. I played this with my crappy monitor stereo speakers and I could tell it sounded good. I likely will replay this just to play it with my dedicated headset. The premise could have been handled better, especially as its ultimately some girl with schizophrenia being tormented so the voices in your head could help or hinder you. That has gameplay potential that is never seen in Hellblade.

I didn't like black plague, the monsters were too in your face, not very subtle at all, the areas were kinda samey looking and uninteresting compared to the mine and replacing red with clarence was akin to replacing snake with raiden.
