Did Zero Time Dilemma really deserve the hate?

After all it's got best girl in it.

I enjoyed it, but it is by far the worst Zero Escape. Did it deserve the hate? Kind of. Mediocrity is more offensive as a follow-up to greatness than badness is to the mediocre. There's plenty of series people whine about that aren't worth the effort to me, so I could forgive anyone who seriously gives a shit about Bethesda ruining (non-Isometric) Fallout or any similar trash for being a little unfair when it comes to evaluating Zero Time Dilemma.

Not entirely. On the one hand it barely got made on a shoestring budget with the lead writer only even able to do one route because Spike Chunsoft seriously mismanaged the series.

On the other hand, the severe disconnect from VLR's ending probably does deserve all of the hate it gets. There are some major ass-pulls (a fucking ayyyy lmao ex machina), and not only are some plot points completely ignored (Clover and Alice's fate, the importance of Kyle who was never seen again.) but the entire "secret ending" just got retroactively dumpstered because "nah, didn't count" after setting things up for a grand finale with actual intervention from the player.

Instead, we got… well, something less than that.

I liked 999 back in the day, Should I play VLR?

Since this game came out and apparently is shit ive kinda ignored the series ever since.

Does VLR have a good stand-alone story if you ignore this game?

Yes to both questions. The biggest problem you'll find with VLR is that the artstyle for characters changed to 3DS-quality 3D models, but once you get used to it, it's nearly a flawless game.

>it's nearly a flawless game

Other than taking a standalone game and forcing it to have a cliffhanger for a mediocre finale, and pulling its punches thanks to Spike Chunsoft and scaredycat Japanese, it's fine.

999 > VTD > shit > ZTD

There is no argument. I'm not working Uchikoshi's other shit into this because it'll take 3 hours

Your right it had some ass pull, and its quality compared to vlr was kinda jank I got the 3ds version but heard not much better from the other versions and scrapping the double puzzle system was a poor idea.

>Clover and Alice's fate

The ayylmao machine is implied, which honestly had it not been a yyylmao machine but simply an futuretech that got awash in time I could have accepted it easier, or a way to explain it with the esper stuff, though everyone becoming an esper was junk. I also think it was a missed opportunity to not have used lotus' children in the 3rd game instead of new chars gor some of the cast. But probably my biggest gripe was the game was not as stand alone as vlr, which would not be a simple fix.

>Other than taking a standalone game and forcing it to have a cliffhanger for a mediocre finale,

There's resolution to the timeline in VLR. ZTD did not really need to exist. It fills in some plot gaps and creates some problems for itself, but the story could have survived a few things not being expounded upon and been totally in-tact. This impulse fans have to filling in areas in the background of stories that don't need to be filled in is part of why every successful story-driven franchise will eventually be loaded with low-quality shit meant to clarify irrelevant plot points for the satisfaction of autistic retards and nobody else. See also: everything in Star Wars not found in either the first three movies or most of the video games prior to Disney's acquisition of the franchise.

>work on FUCKING PEPSIMAN as a code monkey

>become hired as lead writer for a romance VN

>make the risky decision of shifting focus away from

>start making VNs again with Chunsoft, who pioneered the industry with their horror "sound novels" on the Super Famicom, but this time incorporate game play in the form of escape room puzzles and upside-down sudoku

>the games are essentially failures in Japan, so much so that you indirectly influence the creation of the highly successful Danganronpa series which at the time was called DISTRUST and had a much darker tone

>come up with the ingenious twist of making your game set years after the bad ending of another game that doesn't exist

>direct a comedy anime

>oh shit now you gotta make that one too but you only had a vague idea of what would happen in it and you were delayed by several years due to funding issues also you've played one too many TellTale games and now want to make one yourself and also you've been talking too much with Kodaka of the Danganronpa series who is now your coworker so you both decided wristbands that put the characters to sleep are going to be the core device of your next plot

>COMPLEX

>being the idea man that you are you come up with the idea behind some anime nobody watches

>make another VN type game, this time a comedy game disguised as another philosophical sci-fi game that has a twelve-year old with a camel toe who talks about the noble nature of the LGBT rights movement, a tsundere AI gf, a twitch thot who secretly believes in exact same shit alex jones talks about with Joe Rogan in that one clip and her simp that ends with a dance scene or a crash in the US pc release

>fuck everything you have left your company alongside the other 3 people who gave Danganronpa its identity and are now making a game about nine year olds slaughtering each other
