My Minish Cap cartridge has a small circular indent on the front under the sticker which my other GBA game (Rayman 3) doesn't have. The Game Boy animation also appears without the Nintendo logo and freezes but loads normally with the Nintendo logo and starts the game if I turn the system off and back on.

Take it apart and see the print near the pins, the top is real and the bottom one is fake.

The indent on the front isn't that suspicious, most carts have it.

Does it run? Yes, it's legitimate.
The only reason you'd care is if you want to resell it like a dirty jew

The nintendo on the inside isn't a garantee anymore but I've never seen a fake with the little number intended on the cover, check for that.

Mine has that indent too and mine is definitely real since I got it new back in the day.

I can see that it's different from my NTSC cart, but the sticker looks like the one I know it to be out there. Bigger point of concern I find is the cartridge color. Maybe that's what they're like in PAL, but here in North America they're a dark gray rather than almost black as that photo makes it seem.
Most accurate way to know would probably be to find what the inside of a legit print of the cartridge looks like, and compare it against it. Note that not all GBA games have the same innards (hence why you'd have to find that specific cartridge).

The indent is actually a byproduct of both parts of the shell being injection molded, same thing with GB/C carts

I remember years back, someone trying to say my Metroid Zero Mission was a bootleg, when it came from fucking Walmart.

That's a reflection, on the right side. The rest is mild abrasion from being used in my GBA.

Honestly, there’s so many versions and reproductions of GBA carts that it’s damn near impossible to tell if it’s legit or not unless there’s something obvious going on like a clear case or the game won’t save. Unlike the fake DS carts China got pretty good at making fake GBA games.

And that extends to the chips inside the carts obviously. The worst is that sometimes the US and EU chips had a different Nintendo text on the chip, and third party games has numerous versions of the Nintendo text on them.

No, someone asked if their version was a bootleg, so I took a pic of mine to show them what a guaranteed legit one looked like. The contrarian idiot chimed in later.

I actually make a point to buy repros because I just want to play games on my SP, and after buying about fifteen not one has had a problem. I'm just going to start making my own in a couple months though.

Why not get an Everdrive, so you can play everything without dicking around with bootlegs? You can also play hacked and translated games on the actual hardware. Costs less in the long run, I would imagine.

Considering how stuff like Pokemon Emerald and Castlevania: Aria of Sorrow are like $50+ where I live now on their own, it wouldn't shock me. But are those even still be produced for the GBA, or have they been discontinued, the way various DS carts have been?

Considering the GBA has been out of production for at least a decade, I'm pretty sure games aren't still being produced.
