Is it just me or does the Fairy Tail game look really… well, bad? I can’t tell if it’s just me being grumpy because it isn’t what I wanted it to be, or if it really does look like shit. It’s made by Koei and Gust so I figured that it would at least look nicer than this visually.

The world fits a game well.

>work at guild

>take various level of quests from job bored that have you traveling across the world and get different magic/money/summons as a reward

>tons of different monsters, ancient gods, and demons to battle

>tons of different magic and forms to use in battle

I think the summons are the absolute worst part though. In the manga they were always some cool spectacle that had some celestial gateway opening… here a drawing flashes across the screen and you see an attack done off screen so they didn’t have to make the model.

It reminds me a lot of that Digimon RPG that came out on the ps2 years ago. I figured with Gust more effort would be put into the game but nothing about it look particularly good.

There are hardly any good anime games. They have the same problem as licensed games. Also, Fairy Tail was already bad because it lacked the guild aspect to it because it really only focused 3 or 4 main characters and the rest of the large cast gets shafted.

I remember when the main cast was locked away for 7 years on Tenro Island I think and that left only the B and C members to hold the guild up until their return later. I thought this would have been a good time to build them up to be capable without the main cast but they get trash and were losers without them for those 7 years.

There was also that pointless alternate dimension arc where they go to a world that has doubles of them with different personalities and the origin of those cat people that follow dragon slayers. That arc was utterly pointless other than to bring a cat person who can see the future but doesn't tell anyone about it until its too late and bring back a previously mentioned dead character back to life. They closed off that dimension never to return to it and release all the cat race people into their world and serving no purpose from what I remember all the way up till the end of the manga.

It's still continuing with the sequel 100-years quest and a lot of spin-offs. I still think the series, for bad as it was, is still better than the current Mashima series Edens Zero, which recently did a time leap to erase the crew actually losing horribly in the worse way. Time travel elements were already introduced but I thought he could've done it in a different way without relying on the cliche one but he had to choose the obvious choice.

Fairy Tail is the bottom of the barrel of anime and manga, along with Naruto and other of it's kind. Those is a subversion of shounen manga done to appeal to women (i.e, purposedly made to be completely shit) where the editors/producers only want to sell it based on what couples will date/marry, in order to attract those with defective brains (women) so they waste their money on impulse buying anything related to those pieces of shit works of "entertainment".

I liked the manga up until it started with the time travelling shenanigans. Then it became a game of guess who used to be friends or related hundreds of years ago. The 100-years bs ending was incredibly lame. I just consider them all dying on that island as the actual ending, and everything afterwards is what the surviving guildmembers passed on as truth. I liked it well enough. The art was good, the fights were over the top, the characters were cool or sexy, and it never got too dark. I’m fairly basic and surface level when it comes to my taste in manga, so it was right up my alley. Of course, the side characters never properly being built up was something I noticed as well. By the end eveybody aside from the main cast just felt like a friendly acquaintance more then characters you really cared about and knew.

>>16875977

That’s what really kills me. The environments are flat, the characters have the shading baked into the textures which looks terrible, the animations look stiff, and the gimmick to the combat, that “rush” mode has been done in numerous JRPG’s as well. Guess Gust was looking at this game more as a paycheck. Guess I’m just glad to know I’m not being jaded towards it.

One Piece is silly powers but cool things happen, Fairy Tail is cool powers but silly things happen.

Other than that it’s basically One Piece if the pacing was faster and cool things happen more often but there’s a massive trade off, with that faster pacing comes the loss of meaningful characters and world building.

glad I'm not the only one; when I first read the manga I was wondering if it was by the One Piece guy based on the tendency to show teeth

turns out it's by the Rave Master guy instead

it's a story that had potential to be better, but it shifted into power levels with, ultimately, everyone just having to hold the line and wait for GokuNatsu

just in the central cast we've got a girl who can conjure 100 final fantasy swords and another girl whose summoning powers actually make for good storytelling when the writer can be bothered to use her. In the side character cast we have shifters, spellguns, one of the great 12 zodiac spirits, and I don't even remember what else

but no, we have to rely on the guy whose power is fire, fire, and more fire

and everything just keeps coming back to that damn tower. There's got to be other evil shit in the world

The setting would actually work really well for a turn-based RPG (Wendy’s buffs, Lucy’s Summons, Erza’s armors with their various strengths and weaknesses), the problem is this is obviously a cash in. The developers have cut tons of corners but not done anything to build off the strengths of the corners they cut. For instance, the graphics look like absolute dog shit so you’d expect the animations to be on point, yet they are ugly and stiff. The levels are small and contained so you’d expect them to be beautiful and filled with life, but they are flat and empty. The combat is turn based so you’d expect it to be refined with some sort of gimmick to shake it up a bit, but it looks incredibly basic and unappealing.

I mean, just looking at how they handled Lucy’s summons shows just how hard they tried. I guess this game is aimed more towards people who want the filler and supplementary story than anything else.

Been reading Bleach myself. It’s crazy how much the anime cut out as well as characters being almost completely different at times.

For instance, Ichigo in the anime is a bit of a Gary Stu but it the manga he has to fight with cowardice from time to time and isn’t nearly as preachy. Also going through Dorahedoro and 7 Deadly Sins at the same time. 7 Deadly is really fucking good. Love how they mixed an anime art style with old European inking.

Naruto was good pre-timeskip. The Land of Waves is a seinen for all intents and purposes—the relationship between Haku and Zabuza is particularly nuanced, and Kakashi takes the main focus. The chuunin exam is also really entertaining, and the tournament is just as good as Yu Yu Hakusho's.

Everything goes to shit after the timeskip, though. Sasuke becomes the single edgiest entity in all of fiction, and Naruto becomes Ninja Jesus, completely destroying his entire 'underdog' characterization up until that point. It's pretty much an unavoidable fact that timeskips ruin manga. Dragon Ball was the only one that did it even remotely gracefully.

I really liked the Pain arc though my boy Rock kept getting left out of everything. I think the thing I hated most about Naruto was all the retcons. It’s established right from the beginning that people avoided Naruto like the plague, yet there’s suddenly all these references to times when Naruto was little and hanging out with the other kids and having a good time. Other than that it was his character constantly learning something then backtracking on what he learned in the next chapter.

Holdover from days long gone. Anon mentioned 1983, which should give an indication of their age.

Real-time combat system is just that, combat, and all its mechanics, happening in real time. AKA an action RPG or ARPG. Problem is, with countless years of Souls, Diablo, Castlevania SotN, ARPG is about as confusing as calling DMC a hack n slash. Even though ARPG fits for something like old Star Ocean titles.

Anyway, point is, it covers base combat mechanics, as well as the AI or seamless issuing orders for the party.

Actually like turn-based, or close to turn-based systems, in addition to action RPGs, because they are comfy, and are more classic chess as opposed to speed chess. Both of which have a time and place.

>we actually have the processing power to have good real-time combat systems today.

It was never about the processor or the hardware the reason why they made turn-based RPGs, since you had stuff like Dragon Slayer(1984), Ys(1987) and arguably the first two Legend of Zelda games on the NES(1986 and 1987).

The reason why most JRPGs are turn based has it's roots in the tabletop game Dungeon and Dragons. Nerds from universities who played the game wanted to port the system on a computer, so they used the univeristy computers, and made first person dungeon crawlers such as Might & Magic and Wizardry(which was somewhat popular in Japan). Then the japs also wanted to emulate Wizardry and D&D so they made their own first person dungeon crawlers including Megami Tensei.

At some point someone wanted to take those complicated PC games, port them on the Famicom, which only had 4 buttons(A,B,Start,Select) plus a D-Pad, and introduce them to kids(who didn't know anything about D&D or Wizardry). So they streamlined everything, brought the guy who made Dragon Ball, to make the artwork so it appears familiar to children, included lots of instructions to explain the concept of an RPG and you had Dragon Quest. This game was so influential that a lot of JRPGs since then took the elements of Dragon Quest and added their own spin to it, either that, or they made the niche games for the Wizardry audience.

So if anything, the reason why you still have turn based JRPGs is that they are still inspired by Dragon Quest, which in turn was inspired by Wizardry, which in turn was inspired by a turn based tabletop game called Dungeons and Dragons.

Yeah. I mean, I guess it's a bit easier to read in binge format now that it's done, but with only 18 pages a week, and at least 1 or 2 retreading the end of the previous chapter, it felt like very, very little was actually happening over the remainder of each week, until by the end it felt like there was more value in just shitposting and speculation about it with other anons each week, than their being worth in the actual work itself.

The anime could at least combine multiple chapters per week, but of course they wanted to start that up pretty early to capitalize on popularity, so it caught up fairly quickly, over and over, forcing not just filler episodes but entire seasons multiple times. I guess at this point one could just skip the filler, but back when it was current shit fucking sucked, and even the animation team was self-aware that few people were amused at the situation.

It looks serviceable. My biggest problem is the same as with Jump Force: the aesthetics of the characters are spot on, but the surroundings are basically Unity starter pack assets and that clash is just horrible. I wouldn't ask for every game to look as good as fighter Z, but at least work the fucking stylization. Then again, better than the garbage that was Xenoverse playdough models.

>>16875331

I honestly dropped it. It's not bad, but it isn't good either, and the anime follows the retarded Hasbro mindset of

>This product is made for children, so this will never ever change

But without all the fun spins a hasbro product could have. It's just bland and full of fan service, so it doesn't even know what public it is trying to aim to.

That’s why I make it a point to never read something that isn’t finished. I could see some throwaway chapters in mangas definitely pissing people off, especially as a manga drags on and they become more prevalent.

>>16877234

I kind of find it pleasant how they didn’t compromise with keeping characters alive and well. They made that point from the beginning that the ultimate goal was to all be alive for a happy ending and they stuck to it, though I do think it got a bit tired how characters would try and “sacrifice” themselves every once in a while when you knew nothing would come of it, especially Makarov who did it several times then needlessly sacrificed himself in the final fight only to be brought back.

The plot armor was also fucking THICC. I mean, most of the time it got away with it because Hiro made it known from the get go Fairy Tail was one of the best guilds with the best wizards and it was neat that they often lived up to it, but one fight in particular had them getting beaten while they were all unconscious by a murderous psychopath and they miraculously survived just because. That part really annoyed me.

The manga's issue was the pacing, not so much filler, unless you count the terrible pacing as filler to pad out each chapter and make battles go on for weeks if not months. The anime meanwhile could turn omakes into entire episodes (canon filler in some cases, like Kurakuraiser) as well as post main content padding with Shinigami Tales and Arrancar Encyclopedia or whatever they were called, and five of its sixteen seasons were entirely filler as well. Both of course also suffer repetition.

I wish more adaptive works would wait until the original finishes or is close to being finished, than either serving as single season advertising for it, or playing the "oops we caught up, what now?" game.

>Naruto was pretty good thinking back on it

While Naru-jesus was annoying, the series took a nosedive into a vat of shit with how the Pain arc was ended. The ninja world war should have been a what-if scenario, and Naruto should have ended with Pain. Prior to all of that, Naruto was great.

Kubo got super lazy. The series was great, but started to go downhill with "The Heart". Butterfly Aizen was garbage, but Aizen was the big bad, and the trolling was silly by that point. Kubo fucked up by not ending the series with the final getsuga tensho and Aizen. Everything after that was just pure garbage, and incredibly rushed.

That was early Naruto to a T. So many people "sacrificed " themselves to help Naruto, but were revived shortly thereafter. The Kimimaro "Bone Ninja" arc had a lot of it.

Just get the last one if gameplay is what your interested in since it has all the characters throughout. Unless you want to experience all the unique fights in the other games which is really the only reason to get them. Playing these games is a lot better than going through that crap series.
