Lets have a Ninja Gaiden thread.
>Favourite game?
>Classic or XBOX gaiden?
>you think it will ever come back?
I think there is a small chance it will come back, Apparently the people responsible for NG3 made Nioh so clearly they've learned since then. Maybe they'll bring it back but in a completely new genre like they did before.

They also put in a Hayabusa boss.
Classis I love, but was too young, couldn't understand its mechanics, and sucked at it. Which means I played more xbox gaiden.

NG1 in the NES hands down. I do think that the arcade game has great music though.
>>Classic or XBOX gaiden?
Classic. I never had an Xbox and I just don't care for the latex ninja suit all that much.
>>you think it will ever come back?
Maybe. If Nioh continues to be popular enough it might just raise enough interest to bring Ryu back. I hope they do. Last year Sekiro showed that the market can handle a fastpaced ninja action game and I hope Tecmo responds in kind.
What I most want in the short term though is a Nioh: Ninja game that uses the Nioh engine as is or in a slightly modified form and focuses entirely on ninja combat and sneaking. Nioh already features 4 sort of 5 ninja clans including the Dragon Ninja clan so I think it would a great way to segue back into a new Ninja Gaiden series.

Maybe but i feel like a lot of other games have filled in the shoe for it already

black is just NG1 but with more stuff in it, also a lot harder apparently. Sigma on the other hand is the neutered version of NG1.

The NES version without a doubt. It's the best way to experience the games as people played them when they first came out. The SNES version tries to improve the graphics and sound but it just fails to do it justice.
>PC Engine
Please don't! Not as your first time through at least. The PC Engine version of NG is basically like the Amiga version of Castlevania.

Sigma versions both made the games easier. in 1 they also removed the blood and the unlockable minigames (og version had the NES trilogy as an unlockable, black replaced this with the arcade game and sigma removed it all together). to be fair to sigma they also added a new playable character Rachel.

The NG games on 360 isn't a long list, There is NG2, NG3, NG3RE, and Yaiba NGZ.
I originally wrote a much longer reply about this demo you played, not making much sense. since to my knowledge the Demos for NG2 and 3 on 360 were human enemys, but I was going to say NG 2 anyway due to those demons being in the game only later.
Then I actually found the demo your talking about… did you play this at E3 or something? It's the first time I'v seen of it.

>classic is easy and shorter to no continue but remake is harder and longer to clear consistently
Classic has so many tricks and oddities you can exploit despite being a simpler 2d game, you can thoroughly plan out and the fact that some stages are kind of poorly designed, while remake is just cock and ball torture outside of non-BLACK/SIGMA ninja gaiden.
Nioh is a great game but I couldn't stomach it enough due to the heavy handed number game to keep playing to see Ryu Hayabusa.
>>16810082
Sigma retains everything, additional quality of life features like being able to use items without going into a menu but ruins the pacing with playing as Rachel and you don't get NG+ as it strives to be more arcade-like scoring. Sigma 2 heavily modified NG2. The only modern exception is NG3's Razor Edge but I'm not too certain on what's the differences, just heard it's better.

I firmly believe that Ninja Gaiden 4 will be announced after Nioh 2.
But my main hope is for a Ninja Gaiden collection on PC to be announced with it. The series deserves to be persevered and easier to have easier access to it, In a perfect world an NG colleciton would have the Xbox versions and Sigma 1 and 2. and Even maybe the shit version of NG3, is unlockable just so you can see it for curiosity's sake, but if given a choice Xbox would be ideal, but Sigma I think would be more likely. Even better would be the option to pick and choose what you want in your NG 1 and 2, but that is far more work then i'd expect for a collection.
>>16810210
Razor's edge to put it basicly, adds back in most of what the removed that was in NG2, like other Nimpos, Delimbing enemies, and you get the other weapons from playing the game instead of DLC. It also make Steel on bone an actually fun to use quick muti-kill ablitiy, rather then what ever the hell it was trying to be in vanilla NG3. There is also a ton of content from NG 1 and 2, as a shit load of bonus challenges. You can just straight up fight those games enemies and bosses.

It was on an OXM disc. It's not the video you showed me. I remember in the demo you start out in a place that seems like the underworld or something like that, and you see a giant cage holding a dragon. At the end of the demo you approach a long staircase and at the top is a demon on a throne getting up about to fight you and the demo ends.

Okay Now I really don't know what your talking about?
The only Demon on a throne in the 3D games is the guy in the OG Xbox game. There is also the guy in NG2 and there are Dragon's in cages before the cutscene where you see him, but that is a near end game level. And I don't get how that would be in a Demo. and any videos of demos I find just show the first level.
Your description of this demo fits something in NG2, save for the Demon throne getting up to fight you, since he's NG1.

I'm not really a huge fan of Nioh either. it's clearly really well crafted, but there are too many fucking numbers, and skill trees and leveling, going on.
I just can't keep track of all that shit. I'm vastly perfer when a game just hands me what I know I need to make it to the end, and getting to the end is all based on my skill, rather then the possibility of it legit not being possible for me to proceed due to me not building my character right, because I don't know what half of the shit in the games stats menu means.

Sigma 2 triggered everybody because it removed gore and cut some content, but the gore doesn't really matter and the content that it cut was mostly boring garbage. It's also "easier", ie they nerfed some absolutely retarded stuff like projectile spam while still leaving the game entirely hard enough. It's way better than vanilla 2 but probably nobody will back me up. Sigma 1 was more of a sidestep at best, added stuff that doesn't really improve the game but there is at least more of it.

Your youkai form seems to depend on the element of your living weapon going from the demos. Fire makes you a kanabo wielding oni, lightning gives you dual knives, and water turns you into a tengu faced thing with a double-ended glaive. Fire seems to be the best form from my experience.

Of course only time will tell, but Nioh is already their Souls inspired title. they were smart enough to make it it's own IP.

>I'm gonna get lynched for this, but 3RE
There is nothing wrong with liking Razors Edge, it's has arguable the best gameplay in the series, due to it containing pretty much every mechanic and tons of the previous games enemies and bosses. It has allot of redeeming content, it's main flaw is that it's stuck in NG3 vanilla's flawed structure, I can't really think of any story or level moments as worth remembering as the Fiend curse, or the Star Case fight.
3RE is a perfectly fine choice, what you should be bullied for is not remember what an Online pass is, and how it's different from a Season pass.
The online pass was short lived, but it's important to remember. A season pass is the promise of future DLC content, that is likely just cut or unfinished content, it's bad, but at the very least is "shouldn't" be on the disc you buy. The online pass was made as a specific reaction to Used game sales, a new game sold, had an online pass code in the box it was one use only. If that game was sold and bought used, the idea is the next person who owns the game has to shell out $10 in order to access the mutiplayer.
God of War: Ascension literally had only one Trophy behind the Multiplayer Tutorial, But we shouldn't pretend that Trophies or achievements being lock out are the problem, when there was locked content on the disc.

Recovering from what happened with 3/Razor's Edge must be quite difficult but the devs seem to have learned a lot from Nioh, the combat in that game was incredibly fun and using ninjutsu shit was really neat.
If Team Ninja brings Ryu back I would love to have an "open world" game like in NGB rather than a chapter/mission structure, arriving on Tairon and getting used to every street, alley and rooftop while learning about their culture was so fucking cool

Itagaki made the mistake of trusting NOA to help sell his product in the west. Typical of Itagaki is had some fucking hot women in it which is probably what triggered NOA into refusing to touch it, doing only the bare minimum of what their contract required.
NOA are a fucking cancer and need to be uprooted and replanted by the head office to remove the cancer.
They wouldn't even release Xenoblade Chronicles on the Wii. NOE had to step in and do the localisation (and thank fuck for that, they did an amazing job, far better than NOA has ever done) and even then when they got the English version they made a deal with Gamestop to "minimise their losses" for exclusivity, and it became the biggest JRPG on the console and spawned the biggest JRPGs on both subsequent consoles.

XB1 runs flawlessly on Dolphin and there's a really good texture pack available that seems pretty faithful to the original art style. You can emulate it if you want but the game is really long and I'd recommend just waiting for the DE.

ninja gaiden / shadow warriors is ultimately all about getting the sword powerup (red square with two swords) which you can only get when pulping your enemies into props, you can swing around and kick enemies instantly into props (can't kill in one hit) with the first button and jump around slowly with the third button, it's kind of shit compared to other beat em ups.

>Ninja Gaiden 1's rep as a hard game owes to the retarded last level and sending you back if you lose to the boss.
Going from the 6-4 boss and getting booted to 6-1 definitely feels like unfair game design, but at least when I got my strategy down it felt a little smarter then just being arbitrarily kicked back farther then normal.
For one thing the 6-4 boss doesn't make you fight all 3 of it's forms every time, if you beat a form once, then it's done and you right away get a shot at the next form from then on.
going from 6-1 to 6-3, obviously the Spinning Slash is the best ability in the game due to it's damage output, and there are 3 of them on the way to 6-4. but if you were to start at 6-3 then the Spinning slash is the first thing you get, and it's very easy to use up all your energy for it. but since you can start at 6-1 that suddenly gives you allot more options, My strategy would be to get the Blue shuriken, and use it mostly just for that knife throwing bastard on 6-2, and spend the rest of the time gathering tons of energy and then grabbing the Spinning slash on 6-3. IF you can survive the gauntlet then your stocked up to own the final boss. That really made me appreciate the level design
Of course just now I learned that you can cancel using the Spinning slash by holding down in air when attacking, and I can't remember if I knew that at the time back when I beat the game, and how much that factored into the strategy that I just mentioned.

You've got to play aggressively. Thinning out enemy numbers is more important than defending perfectly every time. The best way to do this is abuse i-frames when performing finishing moves. So cut off an enemy limb, perform a finishing move, and use the invincibility during the canned animation to regroup and plan the next enemy you're gonna target.
Also, some weapons are better against some enemies, don't be afraid to cheese through enemies with stunlock and shit, because enemies will stunlock the fuck out of you too, like those exploding dogs in 2. That's one situation where you definitely don't want to block and where you want to Flying Swallow the shit out of them ASAP.

So, if I'm understanding things correctly, here's the "big" difference between Black and Sigma is:
Black
>FMVs cutscenes
>Ninja Gaiden arcade port
>More costumes
>Puzzle sections
>All versions uncensored
Sigma
>Better graphics
>New enemies
>Rachel
>Enemy AI and stats altered
>More save points and shops
>More items and weapons
>More costumes (Vita only)
>Higher difficulties don't need to be unlocked
>Only U.S. version uncensored
So, it comes down to the choice of if you want to play the more "pure" Black or the expanded Sigma. Meanwhile, the other two games don't have that much dispute. Sigma 2 is censored all-around and made super easier (With the "additional content" either out of place or not compensating enough for it), so go for vanilla NG2, and Razor's Edge is what everyone wanted Ninja Gaiden 3 to be.
Does that about sum it up?

pretty much. I used to try and defend Sigma 2, but then I started playing on the harder difficulties and the game balance is even more broken than the original. Anything with the 'glory kills' feature (NG2 and NG3RE) are inferior games to Black/Sigma, but people can still play them because they are fun-if-flawed games.

This seems to be helping in Sigma 1, where enemies actually give you a chance to thin them out. I went ahead and tried out RE and god damn did that game make me appreciate 1 even more.
>dark as fuck graphics make it hard to see
>turn brightness up and the next stage is bright as fuck
>button press messages on the screen constantly
>turn off message displays and now they never show up for the QTE shit when you actually need them
>having QTE shit at all
>navigate from one room to another to be swarmed by a group of enemies all attacking at once with projectile spam coming from multiple sides
>never ending grab and dodge spam by enemies
>no items
>auto aim fucks you over all the time targeting the wrong enemy
>ninpo seems to take forever to charge
I could go on, but I really didn't like it after a few hours. I always liked the adventure 1 took you on even though I suck at the game. RE just seems like you go from room to room and repeat the same shit over and over. 2 gave me a similar feeling on the level progression, but not nearly as much as 3 has.

I hope the rumours of a remaster are true, but that they focus on the first game and redo the campaign so you can play through the main game as all different titty ninjas with different playstyles. That was the best (only) good part of 3.

director has revealed that developer Team Ninja is already thinking about making its next game. What’s more, Team Ninja says they’re aware that there is an appetite for more Ninja Gaiden games and that, coincidentally, they’ve been inspired by a recent wave of ninja-themed video games themselves.
Team Ninja is a development cell within Koei Tecmo known for games like Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive. During a recent preview event for Nioh 2, IGN was able to sit down with the game’s director, Fumihiko Yasuda, who revealed that the core members of the Nioh 2 dev team worked on Ninja Gaiden, and they want to make a new game soon, maybe another in the ninja-genre.“The core members of the team that worked on Ninja Gaiden want to make a new game,” said Yasuda. “We are aware that some fans wanted Ninja Gaiden more than Nioh 2. Now we see a lot of ninja games like [Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice] as well, and we see a lot of good inspirations in those games, so we hope to deliver some good news one day.”
While Yasuda doesn’t outright confirm a new Ninja Gaiden game is in development, he does confirm that Team Ninja is aware of the request from fans for a new Ninja Gaiden game and that they have a lot of new ideas about the genre from recent titles.
Yasuda cites From Software’s Sekiro, which was about a ninja swordsman on a mission to rescue his lord from usurpers. And while Yasuda didn’t mention these other games, there are other ninja titles in development like Sucker Punch’s Ghost of Tsushima. There hasn’t been an official Ninja Gaiden game since 2012’s Ninja Gaiden 3 (not counting the 2014 spinoff Yaiba: Ninja Gaiden Z). But it seems like a real gold rush for ninja games, so if one of the OGs in the genre wants to stage a comeback, there’s plenty of excitement for them to do so.
Meanwhile, you can read IGN’s Nioh 2 preview here and check out our for our impressions of Team Ninja’s upcoming sequel to the surprise 2017 hit. The original Nioh was a more souls-like RPG from Team Ninja, and for Nioh 2 the developers are creating a prequel.

Honestly, Sekiro with Nioh's stance system and weapon classes alone would have made for a wonderful game. As much as I loved Ni-Oh I felt that it shackles itself by attempting to be a game like Souls, same with Sekiro. Particularly how you could get one shot by certain enemies or attacks.

I really have no interest or hope for this game. Putting the fact that it's console exclusive and as such I probably won't get to play it, it just looked too scripted and kind of slow for a samurai game.
What I would love is a samurai game where you get to play as any of the bosses from Sekiro, or Mugen from Shadow Tactics as in a large, burly physically strong Samurai who can overpower people will strength but also has a lot of skill and technique in his abilities.
And he can also fuck a kunoichi.

Romhacking.net is a website that hosts patches for ROMs, and you make the romhack yourself by applying the patch to a ROM. The romhacks on Romhacking.net list what specific ROM you should to apply the patch to, that's what the md5 listed there is for, it's NOT the checksum of the ROM after patching, which I think maybe you assumed it was for some reason. For NES games, a mismatch probably doesn't really matter because it's not uncommon for the header information to be different. But for shits and out of curiosity, I went to see if I could find a matching md5 anyway, and I couldn't. Do you get it now?

The Sigma versions for Playstation definitely won't. The vanilla series *HAD* a chance now that some of Xbox's exclusives have gone onto the PC, but if it hasn't happened yet I don't think it will happen at all.
Tecmo should've released NG3 Razor's Edge on the PC when they released it multi-platform, it was the version that wasn't tied down as an exclusive to any console…but it seems Tecmo was damn cheap and just didn't bother to spend the money porting it.
Now Team Ninja is releasing stuff on the PC, DOA6, DOAX3, and Nioh…but they seem to have just stopped focusing on even making another Ninja Gaiden which is a damn shame.

Team Ninja is aware that people want more Ninja Gaiden, and they've been inspired i suppose by Sekiro's popularity. still they should be smart enough not to do the same thing they did to Vanilla NG3, since Razor's edge was already them just going "WE FUCKED UP WE'RE SORRY"
I'm thinking it's gonna be very likely Ninja Gaiden 4 is going to be the next big game from them after Nioh 2 is released. And even if NG4 isn't too impressive the basic and easy business move to hype up a NG4 would be to make a series collection and release it in some form on modern platforms, I'm sure Nioh has done very well on PC, so NG4 coming to PC should be assured, and the whole series coming to PC and other platforms is a decent possibility in the future imo. The series right now is split between NG 1 & 2 on Xbox backwards compatibility and PlayStation now with Sigma 1 & 2.

Holy crap, I didn't realize that but it makes total sense. There were like 3 really cool games that for a long time wouldn't get released in North America, but then Xenoblade Chronicles did…but for some reason the others never got released only in Japan in Europe. I kept wondering why but this makes total sense now. NOE was doing the translating & publishing them in Europe, but when it came to America then NOA was dragging its feet like a little kid and wouldn't release them. And when it released 1 of them, it's like you said, they produced SUCH a tiny limited amount of physical copies.
They did the same thing with Devil's Third, and it burns me up. NOA published the FEWEST games possible in North America. I've seen reports saying 30,000 and other reports saying 3,000 and one report said that Gamestop only got 420 copies! Why? Because NOA will release as few as possible, and when they all sell then the person at NOA will be all like "I sold 100% of my stock! Where's my bonus?"
I think there might have been a second printing in North America, but even then that was just as few as possible.
There were so few copies, that this $60 game would be resold for like $300 on Ebay. Today, 4 years later, a physical copy still sells for like $160 on Amazon.
I remember talking to European players and they were like "Oh yeah, we always have like 25 players in our guild online at any time". I swear, for the NOA games we'd barely have 25 players online three months after the game was released. After 12 months, the game's online features were shut down too.
I really loved this game. Itagaki would also hide these little weak spots in structures for you to blow up, where depending on the weapon structures would take 2 or 3 times increased damage.
It really sucks what happened to Itagaki. First his publisher goes bankrupt, then the media trashes on his game as hard as possible, then NOA screws him over.
I had seen one thing of concept art for Devil's Third, a friend showed me, but I couldn't find where it came from.
Lastly, Itagaki turned 50 recently and has toned down how much time he spends at work (think he stepped down as a develpment head or something) and now spends more time with family now.
It's quite a shame, because I really loved the Ninja Gaiden series, and now the DOA series flirted with SJW's (covering up all the sexy women) then made over a thousand dollars of DLC for DOA6.

Didn't read that, I hope they stick to it and don't skimp on the T&A either. Remember, when Yaiba came out in 2017 or so, they said they weren't ignoring Ninja Gaiden either. I remember Hayashi saying that Yaiba was like a dessert, being that it was sweet & fun. It wasn't like the main course of steak that is a real Ninja Gaiden title.
A little sad to hear that they bring up Sekiro, which plays more like Dark Souls than it does Devil May Cry, and hope they don't try to make their next Ninja Gaiden game like Dark Souls since Nioh already does that.

I was never good at using ninja stars in my combos unless it was inbetween kills. This guy, while still focusing on a single enemy, will stop mid combo and throw ninja stars. I guess he's being flashy because I'd just finish combos and try to chain UT's. The enemies were so dangerous, I was always finishing my combos without those chip damage ninja stars.
I guess using Ninja Stars would be good at stopping a side enemey from attacking you while you were concentrating on your main enemy, but I always felt like that just took time away finishing off your main enemy.
I did hear that people abuse the game by cutting off a limb of an enemy then doing the same to the next enemy, until you have a room full of slow moving enemies, making the game easy. I'd never do that and just kill the maimed enemy instead. Though there was one Test of Valor, and you had to do that to get by on Master difficulty. It was something like there were enemies that fire 8 missiles from each "arm" (missile launcher pods), but if you maim them then you they only fire half as much. Then you gotta kill the other enemy type 50 times (respawning dogs or something). Finally when the dogs stop respawning, you can kill one of those missile launcher enemies (but always leave 2 maimed) until you kill 50 of those. Damn, some of those tests of valor were harder than the final boss

Some Easter Eggs and random NG trivia.
Also in NG3 Ryu jumps off from fighter jet into a jungle for a mission, but the fighter jet pilot is Robert T. Sturgeon. That name might sound familiar to some of you, because in the old NES game Ninja Gaiden II: The Dark Sword of Chaos there's a special forces character by the name of Robert T.S. who helps Ryu throughout the game. They essentially remade his character for the modern series of the game, just like they made Sonia a codename for a CIA agent of Irene Lew (the same Irene Lew that Ryu helps & falls in love with during the original NES Ninja Gaiden games).
Also, they had the same writer for NG3 as the original NES Ninja Gaiden games, Masato Kato. Turns out the guy's been working on a ton of games as writer/event planner. He's got under his resume credits for Chrono Trigger, Xenogears, Baiten Kaitos, Final Fantasy 7, Final Fantasy 11, Nadia Secret of Blue Water anime and a whole lot of other stuff. Shame the game didn't take off more, he was the OG writer for the series and this was like his big comeback…and NG3 almost killed the franchise.

Ninja Gaiden 3 combat advice.
Also some interesting trivia about Ninja Gaiden 2, is that some bosses take extra damage on their backs (their hidden weak spots) *IF* you upgraded your weapon.
Like
100% dmg = Front = Normal damage
100% dmg = Back with Dragon Sword Lv1
130% dmg = Back with Dragon Sword Lv2
170% dmg = Back with Dragon Sword Lv3
200% dmg = Back with Dragon Sword Lv4
We all knew that with that giant ogre that if you attack the head it hurts more than if you attack its hands, but it seems like the bosses have hidden weak points too. I know this works for Genshin and Rasetsu (mutant spider ninja boss).

Just for you guys, here's a weapon damage guide for Ninja Gaiden 2. Finally updated it today, should be the final version. Some weapons would attack behind the boss dealing extra damage, really screwing up the health bars (Dragon Sword 360UT done three times, get three differetn damage amounts, because some hits randomly hit the backside of Rasetsu doing double damage)

Never played the original Ninja Gaiden (not Ninja Gaiden Black), so I never got to see the "Ninja Of The Future" costume. Can't remember if that was the only way to play with the lightsaber sword.
There was also a way to play the game where you were the beginner purple ninja costume for the entire game, but it was kind of hidden. Like you had to hold down the L trigger button, and you start the game with Ryu's Legendary Black Falcon armor, instead of the beginner purple outfit. Then the point in the game where you would normally change from the purple outfit to Legendary Black Falcon is then reversed, and you can play the rest of the game with the beginner purple ninja gi.
Also Rachel's alternate hairstyles were just brunette/blonde versions of
Alma's hair (her twin)
Kasumi's hair
Ayane's hair
Helena's hair (from DOA)

I don't know, I think that if Sekiro's enemies were less damage-spongy it would feel very much like a classic Ninja Gaiden game done in 3D. I had some similar feelings about Nioh in the same regard as well.
Really Nioh plays more like a Souls game than Sekiro does.

Lunar's 360 ET might be off. Like it's 48 dmg to hit the front of Rasetsu, but 72 dmg to hit its back, and during tests I was just hitting its back with most of the hits.
Also, there was cut Rachel earring from Ninja Gaiden Sigma, where Rachel would get an earring that regenerates her health (like armlet of tranquility). They took it out because in NG1 Sigma they got rid of the poison health drain that would hurt you just by holding Doku's sword, and the regen armlet was meant to counteract that poison. They even took out Ryu's armlet of tranquility, so no need for Rachel to have a similar one. Still it woulnd't have been so bad to have a regen earring.

It's easier if you think of the games less like traditional action games and more like free roam fighting games, because that's what it actually is. Yes similar to how in high level play in fighting games they're skilled enough to use the flashy advanced techniques consistently and no because there are certain techniques you MUST use shurikens to do like using them after Bird Flip to option select into Divine Cicada and or just not getting hit with the extended landing penalty from Bird Flip. The Ninja Gaiden series has a deep and autistic level of detail in its combat mechanics. You can even just treat shurikens like standard jabs you might use to extend combos like in fighting games.

Yep, Nioh 2 has released, and Dead or Alive 6 is getting it's final update. So the odds of a new Ninja Gaiden being next are looking good, given Team Ninja doesn't seem to be working on anything else major now.
The only uncertaint part is when exactly they are planing to make the announcement. The wait for DMC5 was a tad frustrating because I knew they were working on it, but the didn't actually annonce the game until it was only a few months away from release, which was honestly a damn smart way to go since the hype from it's announcement never had time to die down.
If They are taking any notes from how DMC5 handled things the same could happen, or maybe they will announce it with just a pre-rendered trailer/ just a Logo, and not actually have any game footage to show.
Ether way judging from the time between Nioh 1's release, and Nioh 2's that was about 3 years for Team Ninja to make a full fledged game. so I suppose we can expect to have to wait 3 years.
But all my speculation aside. I just want a the series on PC damn it, at this point the main reason for wanting a new NG would be the excuse for them to re-release the previous Games. There are too many people not getting they're shit kicked in by Ninja Gaiden 2 right now, it's a damn shame.
