One was done by a non-union New York-based studio that's now held on by Yu-Gi-Oh! and nothing more (the newer one are made by DuArt media services instead)
while the other was translated by a company that had been focused almost exclusively on dubbing a long-running tokusatsu that's still going.

The first two generations of Pokemon games (And the TV show, and the manga) implied that Pokemon were aliens (Of some sort, a lost civilization also came into play somewhere) that suddenly started appearing all over the world sometime after the Korean war. However, beginning with the "soft reboot" of Gen III, they made it so that Pokemon "always" existed, and then wrote up the backstory in Gen IV that Pokemon used to be on such equal terms with humans (Centuries ago) that they were considered serious spouse material and even married them. Also, IIRC, Colosseum and XD: Gale of Darkness tried going with a more story heavy route, and both of them flopped.
This is also leaving out that even the setting of the games drastically changed. Gen I and II had a "90's high tech" future feel to everything where there was a clash between "traditionalism" and advancing technology. Meanwhile, Gen III onwards had everything in an obvious, sort of "utopian", sci-fi setting.

But as a trade off, VP9 is MUCH slower than x264. The reason Trump is pulling back out of a "war" with Iran is mainly because shooting down a drone doesn't exactly mean war, especially since it's only a monetary cost to replace it. The media's blowing this up like it hasn't happened before.
