Let me tell you a little story. Spoilered because storyfag, obviously.
First year of high school. I was in the same class as a moron who was forced to play the little girl in reform schools before, who wanted someone to bully and who picked the one who looked like a geek. Of course, I ended up as his victim for most of the year.
At the beginning, it was tame. Mockery and insults I didn't care about, attempts at small pushes made to look like accidents I avoided because the guy wasn't subtle about them, things like that. But since I didn't react, he worked harder on it. Physical attacks, menaces, stolen things and torn clothes during gym classes, things that were harder and harder to avoid or to cover.
I began trying to avoid him, but it was useless since we had every class in common. I tried alerting the teachers, but they did nothing since there was no proof. I tried getting help from other kids, but I learned later he menaced them to make them take my place should they support me, so they shut up and looked the other way. Then I ended up breaking.
One day, during class and while the teacher was writing a big thing on the board, he (who sat right on the bench in front of mine) turned over, put a box cutter's blade under my neck and slowly told me how he was gonna take care of me and how no one would react to it. Then that he'd take care of my family members, calling them by name as he learnt about it during various attempts at getting it during the whole year.
I snapped. The box cutter ended up planted in his shoulder. The bench ended up thrown on his face, with the noise alerting everyone but with no one daring to move or act, teacher included (she was a newbie replacing the actual one, she was more scared than anything). And then I sat on him and punched the hell out of his face. Right, left, right, left, with the regularity of a metronome and a strength I didn't even knew I had. I stopped when he stopped looking like he had a nose, and several students took the opportunity to separe us. Two held me by the arms, I took the opportunity for a last hit and threw a leg on the box cutter, which still was in the shoulder.
I could have been expelled, but the thing alerted other teachers to act, and they pieced together that I was the victim and not the culprit, forcing the truth out of my classmates. The only sanction I got was a week of expulsion, and a visit to the bully during the month he had to stay at hospital.
I went to see him. He saw me, his eyes were full of shock, he pissed on himself and shouted like a mad man. A sight that was in my nightmares for years, as I grew scared of my own strength thanks to that. He left school after that, and I only got news of him years later, thanks to someone who knew him, and who told me it was rare to hear more than five words out of him, as he seemed constantly scared of everyone.

G Gundam is the only Gundam series to be in the Super Robot genre. The Super Robot genre is one where mechs get crazy super powers, transformations and other insane shit the removes them farther into the realm of fantasy when compared to mecha anime where they at least attempt to make it look as if it's plausible in reality. Look at the crazy fucking Gudam designs in G Gundam, even the horse mechs the gundams ride are piloted by actual horses and there's even the supermode and Devil Gundam. Gurren Lagann is a more famous example of Super Robot.
Another thing is that G Gundam is that they talk less and fight more which is typical of Super Robot anime. A few minutes into the episode and they already start throwing fists at each other. Even the drama of G Gundam is full of ham and cheese where characters scream one liners, you can't take it seriously.
Most Gundam shows are basic mecha, the machines try to be plausible sci-fi reality unlike the super mechs in G Gundam and there's a lot more talking and serious drama, you'd have to wait a bit until you get to the action.
TLDR; Gundam Fans prefer their series to be a regular mecha and not a super robot.

I think it's partly because most authors just ape off the greats. I could read a book by a no-name author with Tolkien elves, Tolkien dwarves, Tolkien orcs, etc, or I could just read Tolkien, who probably wrote it better. It's kind of a moot point for me, though. 1): there's always a contract when money changes hand, even if that means being paid in "trade in kind" instead of cash, such as: "we'll pay for your room, food, and transportation if you come to our con as a featured guest"
2): Even if there is no written paper contract; a spoken agreement is still a contract once both parties agree to terms.
Money has already been spent on these canceling VAs in the form of advertising copy and (presumably nonrefundable) airline tickets so a business relationship exists even if they don't go.
