The plot is stupid, but in the first game the grey aliens (the Reticulans) just invaded and killed most humans, of which many turned into mutants. You start with two bases and need to fight aliens and mutants in tactical battles, reclaim bases, find out the truth about their motives, and eventually defeat them.
The main point was the tactical battle. Unlike X-Com, it's real time but pauses automatically when something important happens so you can take your time when
one of your soldiers completed his orders, saw an enemy, etc. Too bad the AI is retarded and the realtime leads to annoying micromanagement.
The sequels fixed some of the micro and even the AI, but they're broken at a strategic level.

It's X-COM with pausable realtime battles. But like I said, it's broken. In the second game you have giant humanoid-shaped robots that you can headshot, causing them to fall down, and repeat until they're dead.

It's a beautiful engine, with not enough testing for balancing and too little popularity for many mods (there were some rebalance mods and a Stargate mod).
Running away from the enemy's rockets and leading them into your mines and ambushes is part of the reason mobility is so useful.

Everyone I've known who's done a lot of speed said that it is really harsh, so it's good that you were able to get off of it. I have a long history with amphetamine myself though it is pharmaceutical and controlled. It is beyond a crutch by now, it is a pillar. Weed best for relaxing and calming nerves but I've asthma and cough unusually hard making it obvious, so hiding it from mother is impossible. Drinking is more socially agreeable so that is all I can get away with atm. I never tried DXM, ive been curious but I'm very wary about things that I could potentially become addicted to.
I've been working a lot too, though it doesn't make me feel much better either. I just need to get serious and organized, save up enough to escape and I will start feeling better I think.
