If not would you ever want to? What's a good way to bring it up without hogging the spotlight or allowing others to participate?

What would drow be doing with halfling kids? That's clearly young szarkai infiltrators.
Also, note solid green eyes of drow. That's quite uncharacteristic. Why would drow have such weird eyes? Eyes that look like the eyes of doppelgangers by the way. Given that nobody else have them, and doppelgangers can turn into drow, it is reasonable to suggest that this is not a real drow, but a doppelganger who is - due to stress or surprise - reverting back to original shape.
Since it is unlikely for paranoid drow to entrust rearing of their surface inflitrators to some doppelgangers, the alleged "babysitter" had clearly assumed the role secretly, with some nefarious motives. And it is unlikely to be solo mission both due to logistics involved (which have to be handled by organization) and the objective that involves kids that will not become active agents for quite some time (which presupposes long-term foresight).
It is obvious that we see a final stage of the deep undercover operation that involves two major intelligence agencies, an operation that had gone horribly wrong.

Story time?
Pic related is one from another thread about the time I played a very old man.
>>364442
Second pic there I've actually did something similar to once.
Had a game where the players sometimes jumped timelines, and in one of them the sole survivor of the apocalypse was a lich who lived underground. His only companions were two skeletal dogs, a corgi and a golden retriever puppy. Also his phylactery was the damage portrait of his wife, which he made a shrine around.
Dude may have been a little sad, but when given the chance by the party he offered to jump back to their timeline to lend a hand preventing their apocalypse. Did so by basically sacrificing himself to enchant a large chunk of land so it basically made innocent creatures untouchable to all the evil nasties about to invade. The dogs stuck around to guard the tree that grew around where him.
Epilogue of the campaign ended with those pups being happy with the monks and druids who made the place sacred, regarding the guy as a merciful god.

After a long day of hauling crates and getting yelled at in binary by tech priests for hadling an ancient toaster too roughly, you are about to get some rest.
When suddenly the Sargent assigns you to guard duty in one of the watchtowers.
You grudingly take your lasgun, thermo-flakvest and helmet and march to the tower you were assigned to.
As you climb up the ladder you smell recaff in the cool evening air. You peak over the top of the last step and see the face of one of your comrades, lit by a cigarette. He has a steaming cup sitting on the edge of the railing and is sitting on one of two stools up there, with a blanket covering his shoulders.
He glances at you, exhales some smoke and guestures at you to take a seat next to him.
You sit there, staring at the darkness for some time, the wind whistling through branches and around corners. It's cold, but the recaf is heating up your hands and guts nicely. Eventually it starts to rain, and the roof above your head won't stop the rain coming from the sides. Soon the blanket is soaked, your flak-vest is heavy with rainwater, and you begin to shiver. Even a second cup of hot recaf can't help it. You endure, you wait it out. Your fingers begin to hurt, every raindop hitting your face stings like, your joints pain with every movement. You feel as stiff as a board.
Finally the rain stops. Not long after you notice a faint light on the horizon. The sun slowly begins to rise towards the horizon. It's still cold, you are drenched, and the wind doesn't help either. The hours slow to a crawl, every minute feels like an eternity. As if to mock you the sun just doesn't want to rise just yet. The sky begins to turn grey, then blue, then red. Hours after you first noticed the blackness fade a ray of light reaches your face. You hear movement in the barracks behind you. Birds begin to chirp again, and some small rodents are moving among he thicket below. Suddenly you hear Sargents shouting, boots clacking, engines coming to life, you think you can smell bread and butter from the canteens, promethium from the engines and ozone from the laspack chargers.
A shout comes into your direction.
"Guardsman Anon! Come down here! We are moving out!"
The comrade next to you, throws off his blanket, slaps your shoulder an says "Better get going."
You stand up, stretch your body, and begin to climb down the ladder. Once you are down again, you follow the comrade who called you towards the vehicles. They are already ready to move, and have been waiting for the last baggage to get loaded.
"By the throne, Guardsman Anon, you look like a sack of shit that got run over by a Stormblade! Go sit behind the engine of the Chimera, sleep it off. Guardsman Nymous, make some space." your Sargent says after you report back from guard duty. You climb into the Chimera, past your other comrades and strap in next to Nymous.
You fall asleep almost as soon as the vehicle begins to move.
The rhythmic clatter of the tracks, the low vibrations of the engine, and the noise of your comrades talking about mundane things lull you into soft dreams, while the engine heat dries your clothes and body.

So on the topic of comfy, has anybody had the chance to play, or better yet run, a game of Ryuutama?
For those who don't know of it, it's a Japanese TTRPG with a mission statement of exploring "the journey", following characters who travel from place to place, doing odd jobs and solving problems I suppose.
I say "suppose" because I'm not quite sure how I'm supposed to keep my players interested. I've tried to run it with a group before, but for various reasons it never took off, one of which was that I had no idea what a session is supposed to consist of. The game is usually described as comfy, as comfy as wandering with a group of three/four friends through a soft fantasy world can be, but I can't help but wonder how people would keep from being bored.
Is it just constant character interaction and playing off each other? Or something else?

Ryuutama is such an odd game because it's a game where the journey is the destination, which means that the goal isn't to accomplish a specific task, but to make the journey memorable and interesting. The reason this is slight problem is that tabletop games are a verbal medium, more than anything else. So the GM has an extra heavy responsibility to make the scenery around the players interesting, which won't click with many groups.

I have never played it, but I like the idea and I've read up on some of the books. Ryuutama seems like something that you need really need the right mind set to get into.
You're supposed to be playing a bunch of random schlubs who just decide to band together and go on an adventure, but usually as you said it's more about the journey than getting there so yes while a lot of it would be players bouncing off eachother the GM should not be idle either and should be orchestrating the various things that occur on your Magical Roadtrip to keep things interesting, because in universe you have to feed the account of this story to the primordial forces of nature like a wholesome Cabin in the Woods or its lights out for everyone.
One good example I can think of right now is that a group of farmers can decide to go on a holy pilgrimage to see if they can find beseech a goddess or saint for a strong harvest,on the way there they can encounter dangers, perhaps not in the sense of bandits (but that is certainly an option), but I can see having something tense such as being forced to navigate a narrow switchback road during a tremendous storm, rolls for slick footing, managing your posessions, and maybe having to dodge debris being cast down by thunder strikes. Another could be encountering a troupe of side performers in a clearing who invite them for a show and some games but are all hucksters looking to steal their belongings and running off into the night where if they get swindled they can make the choice to abandon their current mission and pursue for off chance of getting their stuff back or try and carry on short even more provisions.
Due to being a Japanese RPG it's meant to be a one shot, three or four two hour sessions at most and then that's the end and that's reflected in the provided material. It's possible to run one based on War with a little more action in it, but you should be playing grunts with most of the time being dedicated to tramping from battle to battle and the struggles and events that occur there from frayed tensions causing infighting, the attempted capture of a saboteur and so on.

Part of the conceit of the game is that at one point or another, everyone in the world is overtaken by wanderlust and decides to go on a journey. It's so common and accepted that everyone just lets it happen.

That's some decent advice but I gotta add a bit to that. Unlike any other TTRPG that got translated so far, one shots aren't the main focus of Ryuutama. Campaings are about 10-12 sessions at least and PCs can reach a mx-level of 10 the DMPC can reach a max level of 5 but his rules are different anyways. You are supposed to create the world as a group so it'd be a shame if you only use it for a single session
Weather and encounters are two sepperate things. Topography (terrain + weather) affects the difficulty of your character's daily travel roll. While encounters can be related to the weather, the weather itself is more of a constant difficulty throughout the day.
Also, the group is supposed to rest at a town every few days which should also have it's unique sights and encounters. That way they can replenish their supplies and do a bit sightseeing.
>it's about the beauty and hardship of journeys
>Combat isn't all that common, there's many other dangers the travellers have to overcome.
>The group rests at many interesting settlements during their journey.
>Very powerful character that only rarely interferes with the story.

It's so you can lure your players into a sense of comfortableness over multiple sessions, then throw Kuro at them and slowly start swapping out Ryuutama rules for Lovecraftian rules of your choosing.
Double points if the players built up a network of friends and family that now gets swallowed in the rising tide of madness.
