I'm guessing it's because of CoD, CS:GO (apparently you must be standing completely still while using the awp or your aim'll be off), and maybe oldies from TFC (maybe not so much anymore), where the sniper worked differently

F2P (new) players like sniper because it reminds them of other FPS games they have played. Sniper rifle, SMG, and a knife. Perfect. No fancy rockets, flamethrowers, medi guns, and certainly no pesky teamwork needed.
