As it stands it seems that Pyro is pretty underpowered in that he can't really get up close and do burst damage apart from shotgun. The detonator adds more variety to the pyros playstyle but sacrificing the secondary weapon (main way of dealing reliable damage) rarely makes using the detonator a good choice.
