I'm thinking about buying the Pinebook Pro instead of an old Thinkpad, as it offers modern hardware without any major hardware backdoors.

> Can offer a useable experience with a deblobbed kernel, only thing you'll loose is WiFi

> No Intel IME or AMD PSP, only possible backdoor is a 32kb boot ROM

> Publicly available component datasheets and schematics

> Hardware privacy switches for webcam and mic

> Good battery life and USB-C charging

Is there anything not to like about this device, besides the fact that it's ARM based?

my experience:

1. try to order it on day 1. never get it because of some forumfaggotry about a free SD card, to the effect that to order it at all you needed an old enough account, even if you didn't give a shit about the SD card

2. (months later) order it. still waiting to even be told about it shipping.

meanwhile a Microcenter is 30min away and I can walk in, talk to a guy, and walk out with a cheap refurbished Thinkpad after another 30min at most.

>ARM based, not to like

that's a plus. Have you ever written ARM assembler? It's wonderful.

it's also a mild proprietaryware shield.

I'm aware of the long shipping times. I pre-ordered one a few weeks ago, and I'll just email Pine64 support to cancel the order if I change my mind.

Also, the reason I considered ARM based as a "not to like" is because some people need to be able to run proprietary software on their daily driver laptop. Thankfully, that's not an issue for me.

I advise you to get a laptop from puri.sm

even an old thinkpad is probably faster. i wouldn't take my thinkpad on business trip, though.

No. I've heard enough bad stuff about them to not trust them as a company, and I want a laptop without any IME. The IME can't be fully disabled in newer Intel CPUs, so my only options are older hardware or ARM.

>>1120

Eh, as long as it can handle a couple browser tabs, I don't care that much about performance. Battery life and looks are more of a concern to me.

What have they done? I implicitly do not trust them either, but I'm curious what they've done.

Basically, they've had false advertising on some of their products, and the company is a complete mess currently. I'd recommend reading all three parts of the below article for more info.

I have one and I like it a lot. it feels pretty high-quality (metal instead of cheap plastic on the outside), the wifi just worked out of the box, and the laptop is decently fast. definitely fast enough for programming, listening to music and watching videos. The screen is pretty good too.

Initially, it comes preinstalled with a bunch of stuff, like Mate and Hexchat. I removed all that and just installed a window manager.

I only had very few issues with debian arm. to compile some of my programs I had to add the /usr/lib/arm-linux-gnueabihf folder to LD_LIBRARY_PATH, so that pkg-config finds all the libraries. and when upgrading to debian testing I had to force the upgrade of libdrm2.

but then everything just worked.

The mnt reform looks like a less powerful and uglier Pinebook Pro, tbh. It does have better FOSS drivers than the Pinebook Pro though, which could be nice.

Are you talking about the price of the Pinebook Pro or the mnt reform? I haven't been able to find the reform's price anywhere.

Wow, that's quite a bit more expensive than I was expecting. It's probably so expensive because of all the custom parts, but when compared side-by-side to the Pinebook Pro, I can't see any reason to buy one of these things instead. The price/performance ratio is terrible, and the Pinebook Pro can deliver a better overall experience (once you disable the terrible trackpad) for cheaper.

I might buy one in a few years when my Pinebook Pro dies though, as unlike the Pinebook Pro, you can easily find replacement batteries for this thing.

rough plan:

>sbc

>usb hub

>chink mech keyboard

>3d print case

>chink second hand screen

>18650/phone charger

>ssd/sdcard

thats about 200-300

might as well go to a local pawn shop, buy a laptop for under $175.00, get an SSD from Amazon, maybe do a RAM upgrade, and install your own distro

Get a USB to Ethernet adapter. Problem solved.

> ubuntu mate?

There's an increasing number of OSes available for the Pinebook Pro, I'll probably install Gentoo or Alpine on my device when it arrives. You aren't stuck with the terrible stock OS.

> much more expensive, but much more secure

More secure according to what metric? The Pinebook Pro has no Intel IME / AMD PSP (unlike the Purism laptop, which has a neutered one), it has physical privacy switches (just like the Purism laptop), the PCBs are open source, and all the component datasheets are freely available.

> might as well go to a local pawn shop, buy a laptop for under $175.00, get an SSD from Amazon, maybe do a RAM upgrade, and install your own distro

I think you're missing the whole point of the Pinebook Pro. If you want the best $200 laptop you can find, the Pinebook Pro isn't it.

>>1163

Eh, there's some other good things too, like the open source PCBs and great community support.
