Explain to me how their designs are bad? As I said, the only thing I like is their designs. I hate the film just as much as you faggots but I can acknowledge something I like.
I never said their designs are the best—personally I prefer the older guards.
Actually, this might be the only time in a while we see actual bladed weapons again. Are they vibroblades or some nu-alloy?

Not one of the previous posters, but…
I don't really like their helmets, they make zero sense and look like badly made parts from a 3d printer. They also have this silly looking over the top samurai vibe to them that seems out of place. The lobster arms just seem weird. Weapons are comically large with too much added junk on them.
The Royal Guard just seemed more practical and less "showy". They just went with the basic sinister looking cloaked figure style. Looking more like proper body guards and less like Chinese circus performers.

The armour parts look like cheap vac-u-formed pieces made by a cosplayer. They lack details, it might have been ok in the OT but not in [current year] where everything is in high resolution (even Lucas understood that, see the costumes in the prequels).
I have the same issue with JJ's redesign of the stormtrooper armour. I would've liked to see more details on the stormtroopers armour; ID, rank, a color for each squad (like in Clone Wars), shoulder patches.

well, let's start with the obvious royal guard ripoff going on here. second, why is their armor designed like scales? they aren't lizards or dragons. third, those helmets look impractical as fuck, and the weapons look full-on retarded, also i'm not entirely certain but i do believe vibroblades were added to the jew canon, though they certainly aren't the ones we know and love.

Not >>3176 and I have no love for nu-SW, but I also like the royal guard designs. Alot.
Their design is reminiscent of late 70's~early 80's sci-fi aesthetics, where everything was harshly angular, blocky, and looked like it was made of sheet metal. Naturally, EpIV was a huge inspiration to this "new" look in spaceships & robots. So I guess what goes around comes around. Also:

Don't go down the "realism" hole unless you want your argument to devolve into "It's impractical to have the cockpit off to one side of the Falcon!" or "There's no sound in space!" In cinema, rule of cool is still king.

so yeah kinda a lot of light freighters had that
in universe explanation is that it makes it easier to dock to other space ships and to ports on planets with dangerous atmosphere because you have higher field of view from that side
also YT-1300 was also avaiable in versions with straight cockpit and with it on left side, but they were unpopular.apparently space docks suck

I'm usually a big sucker for Royal Guard inspired stuff too. I liked the red armored Imperial Guard faction that was in TOR.
Something about these costumes, though, crosses the line from low-fi and practical into cheap. They look less like something meant for the set of a movie and more like what cosplayers would wear to a convention. Another example of Disney listening to the "CGI is ugly bring back organic!" circlejerk and not actually understanding how to implement it.

Anyone notice any big advertising blitz going on for this movie? Even my normie coworker had to think it over before she could remember any commercials, and even then they were just tie-ins, not direct movie spots. I think they're trying far too hard to look DIY punk and emulate what the first couple of films had to create with a limited budget and a great deal of passion. The trouble is they have all of the necessary resources at their disposable to do whatever the hell they want and they're probably just stripping it down from a more complex and expensive design into a more basic design. They're completely inverting the process trying to reach a lower standard with superior abilities and thinking they can hit the same achievement.
Furthermore they have this recurrent theme with the First Order where most things are just a replica of the Galactic Empire's designs with some extra ornament or bunting to only make it seem slightly different. Little wing flaps on officer caps, head dress protrusions for praetorian guards, cheetah masks on the Stormtrooper helmets, and so on. Nothing is an obvious evolution for improvement from all I can see. It's more like when video game designers cook up a new skin to identify the next level or category of enemy character. "These dudes are troopers, but their armor is grey and they have jetpack pods and their voice modulators are extra gravelly oh and they have lots of HP."

Seriously, i can't go past that shit. They can't move away from the "underdog heroes vs evil empire".
The evil guys blew up the Republic's capital. If anything they would be running for their lives due the reprisal. It would be like the republican sith purge during the Hyperspace War all over again.
The Republic controls basically the former GE territory and assets. One thing is a "resistance" during a cold war period, a shadowy war, not after they blew the capital of the dominant galactic regime.
This is garbage.

I know, right? Even Farce Awoos could have been fun if they'd had a blend of partisans and sheer Republic numbers against the Order's technologically advanced and skilled forces. It would have given the Neu Empire a Khan dynamic, a villainous underdog who has to make up for his lack of size through cunning and (techno)sorcery. Oops, did I just lean back on Dark Empire again?

One thing to keep in mind is that the New Republic doesn't have a permanent seat of government. Instead of concentrating power in Coruscant, they rotate the capitol regularly to prevent a genuine or perceived concretion of authority and bureaucracy in one place. While it's true they lost most of their politicians when the First Order exterminatus'd the Hosnian system, it's conceivable that there are the resources to reestablish government in the various worlds that have played host to the Senate.
I don't disagree that it would have been more interesting to dispense with virtuous republicanism fighting ruthless autocracy and try another overarching conflict. If they were just going to have Imperial die-hards cripple the New Republic, then why not make movies out of the Thrawn Trilogy? I do, however, understand how a writer could pull it off, though whether or not they'll bother to even twist Pablo Hidalgo's arm into Twitter-splaining it I have my doubts.
>>3907
That's pretty much what they were going to be dealing with and what a lot of people writing new novels around 2014-15 had in their notes to use, but I guess somebody decided that it's not trve Star Wars without a totalitarian juggernaut and scrappy chaotic good rogues.
I think that Snoke is going to try and be Dark Empire Sheev anyhow, which is a waste of character worth its own discussion.

Imagine that North Korea managed to nuke Washington, or a suicide Isis type with a briefcase nuke. They would blow up the capital, but the rest of the country would be basically intact.
Even with the lost of the majority of the political class, the country would still control more assets than enough to perform a reprisal. That or an opposite scenario, the country would balkanize in the following day.
What the not-Empire did with the Nu-Republic was basically and Endor 2.0. Killed the leaders and the elites. The Republic would splinter in a day. But since the movies don't imply that happened, the only possible outcome would be a immediate reprisal, an immediate mustering of forces going for a full scale war. It wouldn't be a scenario where "the Resistance goes to an open war against the 1st Order", it would be "immediate militarization Clone Wars style, with shipyards going 24/7 churming ships and draft in a galactic scale". They just got their capital and main fleet destroyed. Even at a descentralized regime, that's too much to not perform an immediate change of policy and militarization.
They handle that so badly, keeping the "good partisans against evil regime" even when it can't make sense anymore that breaks the suspension of disbelief.

Seeing how the EU proper was launched with Dark Empire and Heir to the Empire, and Lucas was more involved back then when it came to approving ideas, you'd think he would've shot down the story if he disliked it. Hell, according to Veitch, clone Palps was pitched directly to Lucas.

His involvement was more out of a desire to not see something too radical from his ideation published than investment in lore creation.
Dark Empire was originally supposed to feature Darth Vader resurrected as the villain with Luke joining him. Lucas said, "He'll no faggot kys.". Then clone Sheev was offered instead and the response was, "Fine, whatever."

>Our original proposal was to bring back Darth Vader's costume and mask, with somebody else inside it. We felt the Empire would want to maintain the fearsome image of Vader and wouldn't much care who was wearing the armor and breathing mask. George vetoed that idea (although he did allow us to have Vader appear in dreams and memories). He said, no, you can't bring back the Vader costume…but if you can figure out how to bring back the Emperor, that's o.k.
>The obvious way to bring back the Emperor was with cloning, which George immediately approved.
>(…) We received hardly any "guidelines" in those days. In fact, George gave us "carte blanche" (his words) to dream up ideas. But he wanted to see and approve almost everything we came up with. Fortunately he seemed to love what we were doing, disapproving very little and offering good suggestions for improvement.
I think the idea that Lucas liked the story stems from a rumor of him giving the TBP to his employees as a Christmas gift back in the day. I never came across a reliable source for this though. Then again, I never read about him disliking DE either.

It's the whole being true to the spirit, instead of the superficial. The EU felt like Star Wars because it was almost always true to the spirit, while Disney Wars has stormtroopers, and tie fighters, and x-wings, and yet never actually feels like Star Wars.
