I'll be honest, I find Darth Vader lame as fuck. I like Star Wars but people creaming themselves over his character puzzles me. His voice isn't intimidating, it sounds like a flaming homo with a lisp trying to do a tough guy voice while wearing a voice changer. He is basically Darth Sidious' bitch, even if you take away the prequels with mommy/wife issues if you take them into account as well. His design isn't particularly visually compelling either.
It feels like he is a "big thing" in Star Wars only because of his status as the franchise mascot (let's be honest here, nobody gives a fuck about Luke Skywalker) and not because he is actually a cool character. He was kind of entertaining in the very first Star Wars movie, I'll admit but he never recaptured that spark in any subsequent material. In fact, further SW material just made him even worse.

If EP IV was your first or only taste of Star Wars, then Vader is the bad guy, the "emperor" is just briefly mentioned and way the other Imperial officer bashes Vader's devotion of the force suggest the emperor is not force aware. Vader is sort of like a rogue agent of the emperor and Grand Moff Tarkin confidently pulls rank on him, he's established as his own master in the first film, which is then ret-conned into being Palp's bitch, and later a whiny twat of a kid.

But that's the point in Return of Jedi. Vader was a merciless no-nonsense political officer who kill his subordinates for slightest failures and then he says "the Emperor is not as forgiving as i am".
The point isn't that Vader wasn't intimidating, but that Palpatine was way worse in terms of evil.

Except he wasn't. He was a scary-ass Imperial enforcer with fucking magic powers who liked being in control and its strongly hinted that he hates being ordered around by others and wants to be the biggest guy around. Then his character takes a 180 in Empire Strikes Back onward where he's suddenly a loyal lapdog instead of a potentially loose canon that could start a coup d'etat the moment he feels the opportunity is right to take over. The "I am your father" twist may be iconic but it kind of killed a cool part of the character.
The prequels just made this worse by giving him the shittiest motivation ever to turn and making him basically into an abused child being groomed by a space pedo in government and effectively blackmailed into becoming evil.

I think it's about 90% guaranteed that RotJ would've had Vader assassinate the emperor and become the new ruler of the Empire. And there would've been no redemption plotline.
