Why do Klingons never get their dialogue translated by the universal translator, and Klingon commanders always have to yell at their subordinate to speak English (?) and not Klingon when humans are around? Why do so many of the Klingon words Worf speaks go untranslated?
Why do so many Klingons speak English so well?
Just how complete is the Klingon language that was developed by the creators? I hear of people being "fluent" in it and being able to carry out conversations at conventions and such, but I've also heard of major shortcomings (e.g. there is a Klingon word for "bridge" of a ship but not for a "bridge" across water).
Also, general Klingon/Klingon language/Universal Translator thread.

random bullshit about it being too hard to translate properly I guess
Other theories that there are simplified Klingonese which is universal translated and sort of high Klingonese which isn't.

It seems like Klingon is just sort of skimmed over; translated when appropriate, not translated when alien things are wanted. I just hoped there was some sort of semi-official explanation. I suppose I could buy the "high Klingonese" excuse, but it still seems incomplete.
It does sound a lot nicer hearing actual Klingon in episodes than having it translated, like the webm in my OP, but they're the only race that gets this benefit. Everyone else is just auto-translated. Presumably just a production limitation.
Does anyone on /strek/ actually know Klingon?

I think the bigger question is why Picard isn't translated when he speaks French?

All the main characters know Klingon so the translator leaves it alone

I assumed English was the de-facto language of Earth by then, at least the civilized parts, and he was speaking English.
Of course he should be speaking French when he visits his family, but for production reasons I can see why that is glossed over.
Pics unrelated, I'm currently rewatching TNG and just passed this episode.

Keiko looks relatively calm in that episode.

Picard, Riker, Worf, and probably Data seem to be the only ones who understand any sort of Klingon, which goes conveniently untranslated when they speak it.
I do wish the producers would have put hard subtitles when Klingon is spoken.

Klingon was designed by a linguist to have its own syntax and vocabulary that all sounded like it came from the same language. I don't know if the language has a complete vocabulary, but it does have a complete structure.
A possible explanation for words not being translated is that one can decide what gets translated by the universal translator and what does not before speaking.
