Interesting how much their opinions have changed since their last STD video.

Rich pretty much hated STD from the start, or at least quickly saw the warning signs that it would be shit. Mike I think was just in denial for a while. He hoped for better, that this wouldn't be what Star Trek will be like in the current year. In the last vid they did, iirc it was the re:view of the second half of STD, you could see that Mike was pretty broken by this shit. He even said that if he allowed himself to watch The Orville, a show I'm sure he sneered at first time he heard of it, he'd love it.

But yeah, I think it's so sad how little STD actually offers in terms of actual enjoyment. Rich rolling his eyes when watching the trailer (during the Red Angel or whatever it's called part) just shows how fucking badly CBS screwed it up. It makes me wonder about the future Trek shows/shorts/cartoon they have planned (which I do hope Mike and Rich will talk about; the Picard Show will probably get a vid, even if it's 50 minutes of Mike talking about how much better TNG was) and if they even have a plan to make those work when they can't even fix STD.

I think Mike was still holding out hope for Season 2, even after the mediocre Comic Con trailer. I think the shorts and the latest trailer finally snuffed out all remaining hope he had. Oh God, wait until the Picard series comes.

Rich completely gave up mid-season 1 and was basically just entertaining Mike's delusions that it could possibly improve.

>50 minutes of Mike talking about how much better TNG was

More like 50 minutes of Mike talking about how much better his Picard ideas were. Whatever actually happens, I hope they do a more detailed video on the Orville once S2 ends, since Rich apparently enjoys it.

The other Trek projects are made by the exact same people and Kurtzman is at the helm of the whole thing.

Does it count as "denial" that I'm holding back my judgement until Discovery ends or gets cancelled, whichever comes first?

First 2 seasons of TNG sucked. First 3 seasons of DS9 were slow and mostly filler, first 2 seasons of VOY were dull and the first two seasons of ENT had a lot of duds.

Yet, TNG was probably the most consistently high quality series, ENT ended up being my favourite series, DS9 had the deepest character development and VOY was….. interesting (a lot of good episodes, a lot of bad episodes, overall an ok experience).

If Discovery survives into 7 seasons, then surely the best judgement should happen at the end? ENT was killed just as it got good. And the guy who cancelled ENT also started CBS All Access.

Some people here are capable of making intelligent, reasonable points about Star Trek. Mike and Rich are idiot manchildren who made their living by being uncreative assholes who shit on other people's work. That's why it's funny they have defenders here who get red-assed because someone points out what idiots they are.

I'd bet on there not being a season 3. The only reason CBS greenlit seasons 1 and 2 is because Netflix paid for production in exchange for outside-North-America distribution rights, so CBS was basically getting a free show to showcase All Access. If Netflix declines to renew that arrangement, and if it continues to fail to draw crowds into getting All Access accounts, the odds that CBS will want to pick up the cheque for future production are pretty slim. It's not a cheap show to make.

What I'd expect to see are small-budget miniseries and one-shot Short Trek episodes on All Access that reuse props, sets, and other production resources that have been paid for already. This way, enough CBS execs can save face and pretend that the Star Trek revival isn't actually dead, without having to put out much new cash either.

Small-budget scifi can work well (look at the original TOS on a good day for examples of this) but only in the hands of a smart non-micromanaging executive producer who can recruit talented writers and directors. That's not going to happen under Kurtzman.

>And the guy who cancelled ENT also started CBS All Access.

That guy is Les Moonves, and his career at CBS is DOA as of last september.

There's a bit of a charm to how goofy the low-budgetness of Star Trek can get

>Coffee stains on the ship

>The "screens" clearly being plastic

>That episode where Riker finds a clone of himself stranded on a planet for seven years and the only difference is his beard is slightly longer and his hair is identical to the other Riker

>The episode where time stops on the Enterprise and you can clearly see the people breathing and moving despite time supposedly being frozen

>Netflix

I live in Europe, so I had the fortune of not having to deal with CBS All Access. The fact that everything else expect the films are on Netflix (in Europe) is a neat situation.

But being in Europe, I don't have any legit means of watching The Orville, and I think the people who got the distribution rights put it on pay to view subscription television, and I'm not going to sign a contract for pay to view satellite or cable TV.

Actually, Netflix chose not to have the Short Treks, so there are no legitimate ways to actually watch those where I live. So, I can't even pass judgement on those myself!

Season 2 will be coming to Netflix in Europe, but apparently Netflix only paid a fraction of what they did for Season 1, mostly because Netflix made a loss from getting the distribution rights.

Interesting fact I know of, is that in Canada, a TV network has the broadcast rights to Discovery, making it one of the few territories where Discovery isn't on a VoD service.

Same here in France.

>in Canada, a TV network has the broadcast rights to Discovery

I've heard that the audience ratings were so low that they didn't bother doing a re-run of the first season.

Quick question, mostly because it's interesting to me: do you watch Star Trek in English or with French dubs?

My native language is English, but I did learn German to a high level as my second language. I've seen some episodes of TOS and TNG in German dubbing, and some of it sounds weird af, at least compared to the English, and sometimes, the dubbing sounds lifeless, or just out of place.

And if you have seen Star Trek in French, what accents do they give to some of the characters? In German, Data sounds more like German dub Spongebob (probably the same voice actor), but overall, no one speaks with an accent. It's all clear high German.

>do you watch Star Trek in English or with French dubs?

I watch Trek in english although I used to watch Enterprise with french dubs because I liked the french voices.

I know that there are places (is it Russia?) where they have like a voice over. It's weird because you can hear both the english track and the dub.

Since BSG I don't wait for foreign shows to be available in my country, especially when it's a science fiction program. For example to this day BSG has not aired entirely on french tv. One channel had the rights for the miniseries (and it was shown in 4:3) and another one only aired the first season and stopped at the mid-season 2.

At the time of writing that post, the Short Treks were not even on Netflix. Apparently, Netflix got them for free like a month afterwards, and then they hid them in the "Trailers and more" section. CBS initially expected Netflix to buy the rights to the Short Treks for non NA distribution, but Netflix refused. Netflix eventually got them for free with the deal to distribute Season 2 outside of NA.

Since Discovery has (somehow) been approved for a season 3, I do not know if Netflix will cough up the money again, or Netflix will just go "if you want non-NA viewers, you're going to have to accept our deal".

That all said, streaming services have gone to absolute shit. First it was just Netflix, but then Disney did their own thing, HBO did their own thing, CBS did their own thing, now the UK broadcasters are joining forces to do their own thing as well. That's not forgetting Amazon who ties their weird subscription to their "Prime", which is total bullshit and anit-consumerist. Soon, you'll have to have something like 5-6 subscriptions to watch whatever you want.
