You can change your avatar in a lot of different ways. Sometimes by buying shit, or just attatching different objects to yourself.

Use the Firestorm launcher, it's a lot better.

You get a house by paying money

There's a search bar in the upper right of the screen to look for things. Post your username and I'll send you some free shit.

A bunch of places give out free stuff for avis under 30 days, you can find some lists there (some might be dead): http://midnightladysl.blogspot.fr/p/under-30-days.html

I recommend at least getting an AO, it will make your avatar not move like a fucking robot.

Animation override. You wear it on your hud and it changes the way you move.

To put something on right click it in your inventory and select add. You should rarely/never use wear, because it replaces everything you're wearing in that location or layer (ie if you have glasses on the attachment point of your nose and want a nose piercing, if you click wear you will lose your glasses)

You can use the inventory search, but it's exact so if you look for "purple top" you will find "purple topping" but not "short top purple" nor "short-top". You can also use filters. And since you're new I suggest you start organizing your inventory into item folders right away.

Also you can save outfits so you won't lose your looks.

>How do I change avatars?

Normal is wonky and unless you get creative is probably going to look shit. "normal" clothes are just flat and sort of slapped on a flat body but are good for leggings or stuff like that, then there's mesh clothes are actual 3d models and might not look like shit. You can get a mesh body which is modeled better but they cost dosh. There is fitted mesh for mesh bodies which "fits" to certain particular bodies on the market. There are a number of people in /d/ who use the Linden body and make it look pretty good though.

>Should I use the stock second life launcher?

Firestorm or Alchemy

>How can I get a house?

Rent from a real estate peep (usually good if you find a good place) a "parcel" which is a slice of land/skybox from a full sim. It is usually a good deal if you are into it, for example a 1024sq/m skybox will probably cost you around 349L a week (like $1.50ish). You can buy from Linden themselves if you have the dosh, but that is probably not within your needs, they offer up entire sims and stuff. There is also premium membership but that is not worth it at all.

>How do I navigate shit?

Go into your options and find the WASD navigation and check it, because you're probably used to that way of walking. Try right clicking on the bottom toolbar and give it new toolbar buttons/take away ones you don't need. (Facebook button, anyone?)

>So I just signed up for a account and have no idea what im doing.

SL has always sucked at the new user experience.

>How do I change avatars?

I think other anons got you covered here. I'd add to that "do not spend money right away if at all", get a good sense of what's out there before diving into buying crap you'll regret within a month.

>Should I use the stock second life launcher?

There's nothing wrong with it, but it's a bit clunky and lacks in features. I'd recommend trying Black Dragon and Firestorm and seeing what you like best.

Firestorm adds great tools forbuilding, and for organizing contact lists.

Black Dragon has a much cleaner interface and gives you the option to use movement controls similar to most videogames. (WASD to move, spacebar to jump, etc.) BD also defaults to much better sky and camera settings. So SL will look a lot better using BD.

>How can I get a house?

Honestly, I'd recommend going premium and getting a Linden Home to start. You can always trade in the Linden Home for 512sq.m. of mainland later. It costs about the same as renting from an estate owner, but you also get a weekly L$ stipend you can either spend in-world or save up to cash out and put towards paying for your account, reducing the cost even more.

>How do I navigate shit?

SL's search tools all suck. It's a wonder anyone can find anything in SL. Still, typing something into the address bar at the top of your screen and hitting enter will open a search window for what you typed in.

Alright, figured i'd ask here...

Is there a good Surgical Mask for Venus heads?

I can only find two really, one is fitted for M3 and can be adjusted but apparently it's a pain in the ass to edit, and the other looks fine but is kind of expensive, i'd have to mod the texture to remove a dumbass design and of course neither of them have demos.

So i'm kind of at an impasse.

hey i'm a personal shopper anon. going to make a big post of how to get started making a human girl av in SL. you can easily adapt any of these into femboy, but I don't know how to make a proper male av at all. soz! maybe someone can make their own guide for males. i'll make one for furry and one for anime later if you guys want. THIS JUST covers the basics. if you want accessories you are on your own pal, use the MP if you want.

HUMAN AV: if you refuse a teleport to annie may haven during the early stages of your game, you can noclip past your awkward anime phase and go straight into being a sexy avatar who looks like they know what they're doing. (otherwise everyone has one, don't be ashamed and wear what you want if you're into anime.) general tips: makeup is your friend so get a base nude skin you really like and then deck it out in compatible makeup options. it can be fun to mix and match. always make a copy of your shape. and go for rigged hair over unrigged to eliminate resize problems. make sure to view your character from all angles too. most people edit their shape as they go; you will probably make lots of revisions. it's best to stick with the basic proportions of the shape that comes with your head. you can deviate a little, but going hyper skinny/fat or tall/short looks awkward. ask for help if you want a unique shape, and don't be afraid of making mistakes. keep sliders towards the middle while you get used to bending the rules. DEMO EVERYTHING! DEMO DEMO DEMO. and shop in world if you can! even just teleporting to a sim helps traffic which in turn helps content creators to keep making content. AND READ THE DESCRIPTION. if it's posted in like 2008 you probably won't like it! compare images to each other and try to look for newer, higher quality advertisements.

HEAD 1: $$$ best choice for beginners, skins are easily available, responds to sliders.

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/CATWA-HEAD-Catya/10228934

SKINS: just type in Catwa gacha into search, plenty of cheap skins available

HEAD 2: $$ serviceable, responds to sliders. hard to set up skins for, ask someone for help

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/AK-Lara-Bento-Head-Vers-20/10706247

HEAD 3: $ takes some finagling to get used to if you don't know what you're doing and responds to sliders in a limited way. hard to set up skins for, ask someone for help

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Raven-Bell-BJD-Bento-Head-10/11020142

2 and 3 require omega applier systems in order to use skins. they only use Omega skins or skins made for the head itself

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/Omega-System-Kit-Raven-Bell/11048233

BODIES

all of these bodies come packed with basic lingerie and 3 foot sizes. they all respond to the sliders but use their own custom skin applier systems. you can even get custom furry skins for them which is cool if you want that. I'll go over other furry body options later.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Maitreya%20Isle/207/165/26 basic body, best for beginners who aren't sure of their look. mostly responds to average or thin shapes, but it can get slightly thicker too. it comes packed with designer body skins that fit Glam Affair brand skintones. the hands are bento, which means they can be independently animated and also cycle poses in a natural way.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Belleza/128/128/27 all-in-one package including 3 different bodies. you can buy them separately too if you want. it comes in three flavors: venus, which is average. freya, which is plus-size. and isis, which is curvy. belleza does not have bento hands but it has a lot of hand poses, 3 breast states, toggleable nipples, and some other fun bonuses. the ass is great

slink is not an option anymore it's just really bad I didn't want to put it on this list. you have to buy the hands and each foot shape separately and its like god why would you go through the effort but here is the link to the sim anyway. the hourglass is pretty cool for a bimbo body, if you're into that fetish or just like floaty tits and ass. it has a pretty good ass?

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Slink/22/124/22

you can turn any of these except slink into a femboy or even just a flat chested female and there are some options available. i've not tried any but judging by the popular response to these, they work pretty well?

https://marketplace.secondlife.com/p/V-Tech-Boi-Flat-Chest-Mod-For-Maitreya-Mesh-Body-V23/10055283

the belleza flat chest is available at the LAB737 mainstore, search it in world. and look for a store called Simple Things. alternatively IM kichaza and he might give you it for free you can try it

HAIR: plenty of gacha hair on the marketplace if you just type in gacha hair. it's really difficult to find specific styles but a good place to start is Truth. try demos.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Truth/125/56/45

do not buy rezology. just don't, it looks awful. they dress the pictures up way too much and they look awkward on.

CLOTHING......... is a huge hit or miss. there's a lot of gacha outfits you can get off marketplace by typing in like, maitreya gacha and they're cheap but IMO you're better off starting at Blueberry/Addams and then branching out into a style youre comfortable with, be it fantasy or slutty w/e. stick to mesh clothes, applier or clothing layers can often look awkward on mesh bodies.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Lenox%20and%20Blueberry/252/128/23

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Addams%20Land/120/115/145

go wild and try demos. you need to have a basic look for just shitting around, it's awkward to wear just lingerie all the time.

AO... animation override. necessary for not following your cursor like a Buffoon... oracul is best for beginners but if you're fancy and rich and maybe you got some bento hands you wanna use? go for body language. all their newest AOs have bento enabled, just look for the sign in-world.

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Kuso/229/201/259

http://maps.secondlife.com/secondlife/Bon%20Voyage/128/98/252

that should be enough to get you started. if you want to get in touch with me for questions, help, or styling tips, you can spoiler your name in the thread and I will IM you independently. I like womens fashion in SL a lot and I have been following trends for years. my knowledge is based off of what I've seen is popular and widely adored, so this isn't really a shill post for any specific brand. these are just what's most accessible for new players. as you explore and hang out, you'll probably find more and more unique stores or events you like to shop at. http://seraphimsl.com/ is a good way to explore new content and go to events, even if you're just windowshopping. take advantage of these to be on top of trends and keep yourself Fresh 'n Snappy. have fun

Adding to that, you don't necessarily need a Bento head if you want a mesh head. Catwa also sells plenty of static mesh heads that are under 1k and appliers that work on catya should work on them too.

Additionally Gensis Lab has several mesh heads that are free if you're in the group.

Also if you get one of the belleza bodies I'd recommend getting the lite version of it since a) It is far easier on everyone's graphics card and b) Only costs 1.8k You don't get any hand poses with it but you could get the vista bento hands which match it.

Also for clothing visit shopping events like kustom9

Here's some tips for total beginners, that aren't ready to spend dosh on SL yet.

For a free body, you can go for the starter body at themeshproject. They have a male and female version.

Now, DO NOT buy any version of that body. It's considered bad for many reasons, but mostly the shop system is a ripoff and it's getting abandoned by mesh outfit creators. But if you can find fitted mesh for it or just adapt your shape to fit into standard mesh you'll still look a lot better than someone wearing the LL body for the same investment.

Keep in mind you can't use appliers or alphas with the free TMP, so always try demos, and you won't be able to change your skin outside of what is avaliable in the hud. This is NOT usual for mesh bodies, it's just that this one is basically a demo that you can get some use of.

If you can leave your computer turned on while you're away or sleeping, you can easily make a few hundred Linden a night by putting your av on one of those afk sex places. Make sure you look okay first, but you can find decent free hair and a skin, and with that body you'll be good to go. Do that a few times and you'll be able to personalize your av a bit more.

Once you're ready to spend money, drop the TMP and go for >>35569's advice. It'll be a much better experience.

 No.35585

I want to add that if you have ANY artistic talent and experience in image editing software or 3d modeling, the best way to make money is simply by making things and selling them.

If you already mod games, it's really easy. If you don't, it's a useful skill that you can develop.

If you code, you can even sell scripts. LSL is kind of a bitch, but there is always a demand for people to code others items.

Making items is always the quickest, easiest, and most rewarding way in the long run to make lindens.

As for other ways to earn money, once you get an okay avatar, you can earn money by competing in contests at clubs.

You can also play Linden Realms for free, to earn some extra lindens. ( http://secondlife.com/destinations/realms , http://lindenrealms.wikia.com/wiki/Getting_Started )

If you want to earn enough to get, say the ~10k you need for a high-quality avatar, you will probably need to get a job at a club (or, again, make products). You can escort, which is poseballing and/or ERP with clients. This isn't amazing cash in terms of IRL currency, but it's certainly okay for an inworld "job". If you're female irl, you could voice escort, but that's pretty much being a phone sex operator so most people don't really want to do that.

You can be a dancer, which is kind of just emoting at people in the club sensually (yeah it's lame.) Or, you can learn to stream in SL and work as a DJ. Alternatively, you can host (manage an event, announce prizes, talk to people, encourage activity, etc). You could try security as well (people who stick around to watch for suspicious activity and deal with the fallout after they boot people) though it isn't exactly a needed job in many places.

>>35582

TMP is pretty much a demo for a shitty product. Unless you want to go naked, it's unusable.

to hide the neckseam you can use the neck sheath thats built into most mesh bodies, lara included. Either that your just cover it with a collar or similar.
