[Serious] How many members of the rationality circles (Less Wrong, Effective Altruism, adjacent meetups and the blogosphere) committed a suicide?
The problem seems significant and overlooked. Let's have an edginess-free thread to list people who passed away in the last decade and see if there are any common warning signs or patterns that deserve more attention.

Not sure if this counts, but Mitchell Heisman's suicide note had a lot of ideas regarding the Singularity, AI, and those sorts of topics.

SquirrelInHell/Maia Pasek/Chris Pasek was an early victim of the Ziz cult which used priming your tulpas to fight each other as a brainwashing technique:

Zizians are basically these vegan singularitan calvinists who think that most people are intrinsically evil and that the best way to think about X-Risk is that it's downstream of bad choices people made. They think that only vegans are really capable of being good people in any meaningful sense, and that the best way to frame X-Risk is less as a state of things you take as given and more like this incomprehensibly horrible thing everyone has chosen to do. The best historical precedent then for thinking about X-Risk and factory farming is the same as WW2 and the Nuremberg trials, most humans are Nazis and you have to figure out what to do about that.
They also believe that the basic answer to this is TDT, and the only X-Risk mitigation plan with any hope of working is to reliably destroy the universe in any timeline where bad choices like factory farming were made so that you blackmail the durkheimian god (i.e. collective anonymous will of the tribe) out of having made those bad choices in the first place; making this timeline counterfactual.
Basically…

So while Ziz is obviously nuts and has rode a misreading of decision theory to crazy town, does anyone know if there's any truth to the accusations that MIRI paid blackmail money out of donor funds to cover for Eliezer accidentally a minor? That part seems shockingly plausible given the inside view of Eliezer's sex life, and the outside view of rationalists doing well on academic decision theory problems but then flunking real life applications of the same.

The answer is severe calorie restriction until he lost weight.
While he was losing weight, he wore an inflatable santa belly to maintain the appearance of him being fat, so he could, at a party, ask people how much they'd want to bet that he'd weigh under [forgot the figure] in a year, and then took off the santa belly. There's a video of that floating around.

None of the links in that document seem to be relevant to the accusations. The first few links just go to intelligence.org's team list or donor list. Most names go to the obvious website for those names. There's one >news story about MIRI which is unrelated. There's no actual evidence given. That entire page is anonymous, and I round it to sneer clubbers. Also, six years and no followup when they said they'd have an announcement?
That is not comparable to Ziz making the claim that >she personally had conversations with Anna Salamon about Eliezer giving in to blackmail. However, Ziz is completely fucking insane. Which is why I asked for proofs.

https://www.lesswrong.com/posts/N4AvpwNs7mZdQESzG/the-dilemma-of-worse-than-death-scenarios
>Methods which may reduce the probability of indefinite worse than death scenarios (in order of effectiveness):
>1. Suicide
>2. Working on AI safety
>3. Thinking of ways of reducing the probability
>Suicide, depending on your theory on personal identity, may make the probability 0. If you believe that there is no difference between copies of you then there may be a possibility of being resurrected in the future however. As we aren't certain about what happens to the observer after death, it is unknown whether death will make worse than death scenarios impossible. I believe there are many ways in which it could reduce the probability, but the key question is: could it increase the probability? An argument against suicide is that it is more likely that people who commit suicide will go to "hell" than those who don't. This is because an entity who creates hell has values which accept suffering, making life a positive concept which should not be discarded. On the other hand, an entity with values related to efilism/antinatalism (philosophies in which suicide is generally accepted) would not create a hell at all. Of course, this is all based on a lot of speculation.
>There is a risk that the suicide attempt will fail and leave you in a disabled state. This could make you more vulnerable when considering indefinite worse than death scenarios. However, I would argue against this disadvantage because the only potential way to evade an entity powerful enough to cause these scenarios would be suicide, which always has a risk of failing.
How accurate is this?
