I am with you on this one, on one hand I understand that moving back into the state of non-existence is like going back to the "default" state since life is extraordinarily short in the grand scheme of things, however our brains are not wired to comprehend nothingness. There are theories that kinda explain this by suggesting that every new consciousness gets "connected" to this supernatural hive-like network and stays there forever, even after the physical death - but I don't think I believe that.
