Iraq, China’s CPECC in $1.07 bln deal to process gas from Halfaya oilfield

Iraq and China Petroleum Engineering & Construction Corporation (CPECC) signed a $1.07 billion deal to build and operate facilities to process natural gas extracted alongside crude oil at Iraq’s giant Halfaya oilfield.

CPECC, an affiliate of China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC), will process around 300 million standard cubic feet per day (mcf/d) of natural gas extracted from the field alongside crude oil, the oil ministry said.

Halfaya, operated by PetroChina, is Maysan Oil Company’s largest oilfield, producing 370,000 barrels per day (bpd) of the company’s total output of around 510,000 bpd.

The current total production from Maysan Oil Company’s oilfields is now around 630,000 barrels per day and expected to reach 700,000 bpd in one year.

Iraq continues to flare some of the gas extracted alongside crude oil at its fields because it lacks the facilities to process it into fuel for local consumption or exports.

At the signing of the deal on Wednesday, Iraqi oil minister Thamer Ghadhban said that Iraq is in talks with international oil companies to build a 300 million cubic feet gas plant to process gas from the West Qurna 2 and Majnoon oilfields. No company has yet been selected.

The embattled assistant adjutant general of the Florida National Guard, under investigation for allegations he covered up sexual misconduct in the ranks, announced Tuesday he was stepping down.

In a statement to Military Times, Brig. Gen. Michael Canzoneri maintained his innocence, but that he was stepping down to avoid distractions.

“I maintain my innocence in the allegations,” he said. “However, the investigation is a distraction to the force, our soldiers have a mission. So in order to support our soldiers, I have chosen to step down.”

Canzoneri, a 37-year veteran who was promoted to brigadier general in December, 2016, will be on administrative leave until May 31 before entering the retired reserve, according to the guard.

In March, the Tampa Bay Times reported that the Guard — about 12,000 soldiers and airmen who deploy to combat zones and help at home in natural disasters — was facing ongoing investigations into allegations of sexual misconduct and coverups that date back a decade.

Maj. Caitlin Brown, a Florida National Guard spokeswoman, told Military Times that while none of the allegations against Canzoneri have yet been substantiated, there is an ongoing investigation into him by Department of the Army’s Office of the Inspector General.

Some of the allegations against Canzoneri were detailed out in an email to a state lawmaker from south Florida written by Maj. Elliot Potter, a Tampa-based officer in the Florida National Guard’s Judge Advocate General’s Corps. Potter researched the allegations and forwarded them to his superiors. A copy of his email was obtained by the Tampa Bay Times.

Ted Lieu, a Democrat, and Ken Calvert, a Republican, wrote that the current iteration of SDA is duplicative and risks undermining the recent organization of Space and Missile Systems Center, otherwise known as SMC.

"The SDA as proposed raises questions about how it will fit with our existing military space structure. Specifically, it is unclear how the SDA as proposed will impact the role of SMC, a unit of Air Force Space Command and the longtime center of technical excellence for developing, acquiring, fielding and sustaining military space systems,” the lawmakers wrote in their letter.

Rather than creating a new organization in SDA, Lieu and Calvert proposed an expansion of SMC that would “leverage the existing aerospace ecosystem built around SMC and create new synergies with those entities.”

SMC is located at Los Angeles Air Force Base in El Segundo, California, which Lieu represents on Capitol Hill. Calvert represents the Riverside region of the state, located between Los Angeles and San Diego.

The suspects are under investigation by the National Crime Agency as part of Operation Stovewood, which is looking into child sexual exploitation and abuse in Rotherham between 1997 and 2013.

The NCA said the suspects are aged between 29 and 53 and from Sheffield, Rotherham, Leeds, Dewsbury and Maidstone.

They have been arrested or interviewed by appointment over the last two months.

All have been released under investigation or bailed while enquiries continue.

Carl Vessey-Baitson from the NCA said: “Arresting such a large number of individuals, as part of one Stovewood sub-operation, shows our desire to listen to victims and bring offenders to justice is not wavering.

“Stovewood is a challenging and complex investigation, with victims and survivors re-living abuse that took place many years ago.

“To date we have engaged with over 410 victims and survivors and have arrested or interviewed by appointment 94 suspects, meaning this is the largest law enforcement investigation into non-familial child sexual abuse and exploitation ever undertaken in the UK.

Bitcoin Dips As World's Biggest Crypto Exchange Reveals $41 Million Hack

Crypto prices took a hit overnight after Hong Kong-based Binance, the world's biggest crypto exchange, revealed that hackers had absconded with 7,000 bitcoins - worth roughly $41 million at current prices - stolen from the exchange's hot wallet.

However, prices swiftly pared some of their losses after the exchange announced that customers wouldn't be responsible for the losses: Instead, depositors would be made whole with assets from Binance's 'Secure Asset Fund for Users'.

According to a blog post published by Binance CEO Zhao Zhangpeng, the company discovered a "large-scale security breach" early Wednesday morning in Hong Kong. Hackers used phishing scams, viruses and other standard hacking techniques to withdraw the entire sum from Binance's 'hot wallet' - which holds roughly 2% of deposits held by the exchange - in a single transaction.

The exchange insisted that all of its other wallets remained secure and unharmed. The hacker's withdrawal request slipped by the exchange's security protocols because it was executed at "the most opportune time" and was structured in such a way that it "passed our existing security checks."

After discovering the hack, the exchange immediately froze all withdrawals; they will remain frozen for the next week, and the exchange promised to provide regular updates on its progress.

However, while customers won't be able to withdraw currency or crypto, trading is still enabled, so anyone can adjust their positions.

Perhaps fearing what might happen to the crypto market if these types of hacks become 'normalized' (though, as far as we can tell, this would be too little, too late), Mike Novogratz, whose crypto fund lost hundreds of millions of dollars last year, insisted that the Binance hack might finally draw more regulatory scrutiny to the space (something that the dozens of other hacks have largely failed to provoke).

In a Reddit AMA held shortly after the hack was uncovered, Binance founder CZ triggered crypto purists by suggesting that Binance might push for a 'rollback' of the bitcoin blockchain to undo the hack - though he swiftly walked this back, claiming it would not be possible.

Binance will now conduct a "large scale review" of its security protocols, and most ominously, it hasn't ruled out the discovery of more breaches.

This isn't the first time that Binance has been targeted by cyber thieves. These types of hacks are embarrassingly common.

In Q1 alone, hackers stole more than $350 million in crypto.

Most parents now realize that they can avoid a toxic injection associated with the development of autism by simply letting their children GET MEASLES. This is LETHAL (not, generally, to children) but to pharmaceutical companies. Measles infection (but not vaccination) may be associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease. In addition, since vaccines are used to DELIBERATELY cause profitable diseases, a child who catches measles naturally is not only lastingly resistant to measles, they are at lower risk for long term disability and death. “One of the fellows in the office that manage money … bought some Amazon so it will show up in the 13F” later this month, Buffett told CNBC Thursday, on the eve of the kick off of Berkshire’s annual shareholders meeting in Omaha. Buffett was referring to either Todd Combs or Ted Weschler, who each manage portfolios of more than $13 billion in equities for Berkshire.

Buffett has long been a fan of both Amazon and its CEO Jeff Bezos, praising the company’s dominance and the founder’s business prowess. But while Buffett has sung the company’s praises, he’s never bought Amazon shares. So a headline that Berkshire was buying shares likely would spark interest in the markets.

“Yeah, I’ve been a fan, and I’ve been an idiot for not buying” Amazon shares, Buffett said. “But I want you to know it’s no personality changes taking place.”
