Another approach would be using the "Natural Law" to regulate society (See Sauce, below). May put lawyers out of business, so there's one bonus. In this view humans have reasoning and the Laws of Nature are discernable by human reason. Thus, humans are morally obliged to use their reasoning to discern what the laws are and then to act in conformity with them.

Humans have a natural drive to eat, drink, sleep and procreate. These actions are in accord with a natural law for species to survive and procreate. Thus activities in conformity with such a law are morally good. Activities that work against that law are morally wrong. As an example consider that to eat too much or too little and place life in jeopardy is morally wrong.

Two types of Natural Law Theory:

Natural Law Theory can be held and applied to human conduct by both theists and atheists. The atheist uses reason to discover the laws governing natural events and applies them to thinking about human action. Actions in accord with such natural law are morally correct. Those that go against such natural laws are morally wrong.

For the theists there is a deity that created all of nature and created the laws as well and so obedience to those laws and the supplement to those laws provided by the deity is the morally correct thing to do.

For atheists there is still the belief that humans have reasoning ability and with it the laws of nature are discernable. For atheists who accept this approach to act in keeping with the laws of nature is the morally correct thing to do.

What are the laws of nature that provide guidance for human actions? These would include: the law of survival, the natural action for living things to maintain themselves and to reproduce, etc..

It is a major problem for this theory to determine what exactly those laws are and how they apply to human circumstances.

The path I've danced to get to Victory has left my old life in charred ruins behind me. There is no going back. 2 years ago, my brain suddenly completely changed. Lost almost all my left brain practicalities, went full right brain. Had to abandon the business I'd started that was just beginning to flourish, because all I could do was watch the sky and listen to God and make art and THINK. It was so pressingly urgent to think BIG. Started thinking and journaling in questions, with big Q's scrawled beside them, months before Q started posting.

This whole, crazy journey, my mind and my spirit have been getting freer, my heart's been getting clearer and lighter, I can feel the world healing all around me.

But my own circumstances have nosedived relentlessly. Had to run from an abusive relationship a couple of months ago. That's the deal with the Spiritual Battle. Anyone who's willing to let themselves hate can get Agent Smith'd by the enemy. The more effective I became here, the more aggressive he got, the more he hated me, the more determined take my power away. No one can shill you like someone you're doing your best to love with an open heart.

But I won the battle! It was so clear that the only battle was the spiritual one. That loving in the face of his hatred (and everything else the enemy threw at me) was the only thing that mattered, much more than even survival. And every day it feels like my mind and heart are healing, in a way I'd never imagined possible. And a big part of that is (You) (future/present/combo??). It's like you've been loving me back to life from the darkest place. So thank you.
