Amazon to close domestic marketplace business in China: sources

SAN FRANCISCO/SHANGHAI (Reuters) - Amazon.com Inc plans to close its domestic marketplace business in China by mid-July, people familiar with the matter told Reuters on Wednesday, focusing efforts on its more lucrative businesses selling overseas goods and cloud services in the world’s most populous nation.

Shoppers in China will no longer be able to buy goods from third-party merchants in the country, but they still will be able to order from the United States, United Kingdom, Denmark and Japan via Amazon’s global store. Amazon expects to close fulfillment centers and wind down its support for domestic-selling merchants in China in the next 90 days, one of the people said.

The closure underscores how fierce competition by China’s home-grown e-commerce rivals have made it difficult for Amazon’s local marketplace to gain a foothold. Consumer insights firm iResearch Global said that Alibaba Group Holding Ltd’s Tmall marketplace and JD.com Inc held 81.9 percent of the Chinese market last year.

“They’re pulling out because it’s not profitable and not growing,” said Michael Pachter, an analyst at Wedbush Securities. “The domestic Chinese online retailers just have huge advantages that Amazon can’t compete with.”

Amazon is still expanding aggressively in other countries, notably India, where it is contending with local player Flipkart to dominate that market. China, on the other hand, has appeared to factor less and less in the global aspirations of top U.S. tech firms Amazon, Netflix Inc, Facebook Inc and Alphabet Inc’s Google, Pachter said.

Customers of Amazon in China will still be able to purchase its Kindle e-readers and online content, according to sources, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Amazon Web Services, the company’s cloud unit that sells data storage and computing power to enterprises, will remain as well.

The world’s largest online retailer bought local Chinese online shopping website Joyo.com in 2004 for $75 million. In 2011, it rebranded the business as Amazon China.

But I believe Merck saw genuine value in the type of leadership Gerberding brought to the table: a cold and calculating devotion to the bottom line, covered over by a veneer of compassion-like-symptoms and a trustworthy tone of authority. In the pharmaceutical industry, these qualities are gold.

A Texas father is in danger of losing parental rights to his six-year-old son because of his refusal to agree with his ex-wife that the boy is transgender. Anne Georgulas, the mother of six-year-old James, is a Dallas-area pediatrician, and claims in a petition seeking to terminate the parental rights of her estranged husband Jeffrey Younger that their son is a “transgender child and, by choice, now goes by the name Luna and is only known by her classmates as a girl.”

The petition seeks to terminate Younger’s parental rights because James reportedly behaves in line with his male gender when he is with Younger. Additionally, Georgulas is asking the court to compel Younger to pay for counseling during which a therapist affirms that James is a girl, and to foot the bill for hormone treatments as part of James’ biological “transition” to the female gender.

On the website SaveJames.com, launched to help stop the “transition” and to assist Younger in protecting his son, James is described as “a normal, happy, healthy little boy — who deserves a chance to be just that.”

The site relates that James has a twin brother, Jude, and that Jeff Younger “is currently in a very tenuous custody battle as he and his ex-wife each fight for full custody. When the boys were 3 years old, Jeff’s ex-wife decided that James should not be a boy. She began dressing him as a girl, calling him by the name ‘Luna’ and enrolled him in ‘social transitioning’ therapy to prepare him for chemical castration. This process can begin at age 8. She has enrolled him in Coppell Schools as a girl. He is currently in 1st grade. The teachers and administrators know that he is a boy, but the other parents and students are unaware.”

According to the site, “Courts have enjoined Jeff from dressing James as a boy at school, from teaching him that he is a boy, and from sharing religious teachings on sexuality and gender. He has been accused of abuse for saying that his son is a boy.”

In his own court filings, Younger stated: “Few things are more important to people than the care and rearing of their young. The courts are entertaining government suppression of some of the most fundamental practices and traditions of American families.”

Massachusetts Man Pleads Guilty to Multiple Counts of Child Pornography Offenses

A Massachusetts man pleaded guilty today to distribution, receipt and possession of child pornography charges.

Assistant Attorney General Brian A. Benczkowski of the Justice Department’s Criminal Division, U.S. Attorney Andrew E. Lelling of the District of Massachusetts and Special Agent in Charge Joseph R. Bonavolonta of the FBI’s Boston Field Office made the announcement.

Bruce Singer, 72, of Southampton, Massachusetts was charged with five counts of distribution of child pornography, one count of receipt of child pornography, and one count of possession of child pornography. Singer was indicted in March 2017. U.S. District Court Judge Mark G. Mastroianni scheduled sentencing for July 19, 2019.

According to admissions made in connection with his plea agreement, on various occasions between April 30, 2013 and June 25, 2015, Singer sent and received child pornography by text and email. Singer engaged in the exchange of child pornography with two other people, including James Smith, a man who was convicted in 2017 in District Court in Springfield, Massachusetts for distributing, transporting, receiving and possessing child pornography. At the time police searched his home in 2015, Singer possessed hundreds of images of child pornography on various electronic devices, including images of several known child victims.

This case was investigated by the FBI, Northampton Police Department, Easthampton Police Department and Massachusetts State Police. Trial Attorney Leslie Fisher of the Criminal Division’s Child Exploitation and Obscenity Section (CEOS) and Assistant U.S. Attorney Alex J. Grant of the District of Massachusetts are prosecuting the case.

This case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse, launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. Led by U.S. Attorneys’ offices and CEOS, Project Safe Childhood marshals federal, state and local resources to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims. To that can be added Sunday’s leading refrain from Congressman Jerrold Nadler, which seems to go something like this: “Saint Bob [Mueller] didn’t decide about obstruction, and the evil Trump disciple William Barr stepped in and is attempting to cover up for the evil President. We demand to have testimony from Robert Mueller.”

They are desperate losers facing an American people likely to say: “Stuff it—your time just ran out.” Our job is to make that happen.”

Iran's Parliament Passes Vote Declaring US Central Command A "Terror Organization"

Following Monday's formal US listing of Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a Foreign Terrorist Organization, or FTO, Iran was quick to hit back as previously promised.

Iranian lawmakers voted Tuesday to in turn list US Central Command, or CENTCOM, as a terrorist organization, which means that any support given CENTCOM will be treated as an act of terrorism. It essentially means all American troops in the Middle East will be treated as terrorists, according to the newly passed law.

“The Islamic Republic of Iran’s government and Armed Forces are required to adopt preventive actions and preemptive defensive measures whenever necessary, to deter any hostile US forces’ use of any possibilities against the Islamic Republic of Iran’s interests,” the bill states, according to Fars news.

It passed with a near unanimous vote in parliament, taking effect immediately, and includes 13-article legislation which mandates the armed forces to gather intelligence about CENTCOM activities. Such material could be used to prosecute either individuals or foreigners giving any level of assistance to the US military in the Middle East.

CENTCOM covers the Middle East and Central Asia, and coordinates command of all US armed forces in places like Afghanistan and Iraq — both of which hold major potential for clashing up against Iranian forces or proxies, especially true of Iraq.

Iran's Defense Minister Amir Hatami said this week that Washington's moving forward with the FTO designation of the IRGC is proof that sanctions on Tehran were failing.

During remarks made early last week when President Trump first unveiled his intent to designation the IRGC, he said, “This designation will be the first time that the United States has ever named a part of another government as an FTO,” and added, “This action sends a clear message to Tehran that its support for terrorism has serious consequences. We will continue to increase financial pressure and raise the costs on the Iranian regime for its support of terrorist activity until it abandons its malign and outlaw behavior.”

The designation took effect on Monday and brings the United States a big step closer to initiating war with Iran. The two sides have already long been engaged in a quiet proxy war of sorts in Iraq, which includes vying for political influence over Baghdad and the question of Shia paramilitary units allowed to operate by the Iraqi government.

Former Marine intelligence officer and UN weapons inspector Scott Ritter concluded of this week's events, "Given the fact Washington is currently engaged in a global 'war' on terrorism, this designation—which places the IRGC on the same footing as ISIS and al-Qaeda—means that the U.S. is in effect at war with Iran."
