BAGHDAD/GENEVA (Reuters) – President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to Iraq this week is a strong message to the United States and its regional allies that Iran still dominates Baghdad, a key arena for rising tension between Washington and Tehran.

The first Iranian presidential visit to Iraq since 2013 is also meant to signal to President Donald Trump’s administration that Tehran retains its influence in much of the region despite U.S. sanctions.

“Iran and Iraq are neighbors and no country can interfere in their relations,” Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif said after arriving in Baghdad to prepare for the visit.

BAGHOUZ, Syria (Reuters) – Armed with assault rifles and with faces wrapped in scarves, the Islamic State fighters visible at the boundary of their last enclave in eastern Syria are among the hardened jihadists who appear ready to fight to the death.

Thousands of people – many of them the wives of Islamic State fighters and their children – have been streaming out of the besieged enclave at Baghouz for weeks, forcing the U.S.-backed Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) to delay an assault on the last vestige of the jihadists’ territorial rule.

Reuters TV footage of the Islamic State-controlled frontline shows armed militants, most with only their eyes visible, supervising the evacuations from a scrubby patch of agricultural land scattered with vehicles and a few buildings.

Lawyer Gloria Allred said Sunday that she gave authorities a newly discovered videotape that appears to show singer R. Kelly “sexually abusing children.”

Allred said she believes the tape is different from the one that helped lead to Kelly’s recent indictment in the alleged abuse of four underage victims between 1998 and 2010.

Allred said two clients, Gary and Sallie Dennis of Pennsylvania, found the recording in “box of old VHS tapes” and were “horrified” by what it shows.

During an afternoon news conference in Manhattan, Gary Dennis described finding “a sports tape but it also had R. Kelly’s name on it.”

“I thought it was a recording of an R. Kelly concert. I watched the sports on the tape and then continued to watch what I thought would be an R. Kelly concert,” he said.

“To my shock and surprise, R. Kelly appeared to be on the tape but not in concert. Instead, he was sexually abusing underage African American girls.”

Dennis added: “He was telling them what to do and what to say, and it appeared that he was in control of the camera. In addition, he was engaging with these children in sexually abusive acts. He appeared to be in command of the girls and they looked as though they were just saying and doing what he told them to do.”

Allred said it’s unclear how Gary and Sallie, who have two adult daughters, came to possess the tape.

“Over the years there have been friends that gave him sports tapes because they know he likes sports and he has no idea,” she said.

“He’s tried to think about it and — no idea. These are very old tapes.”

Allred said she wouldn’t detail “the specific abusive acts that appear on the tape, because we believe that the specifics should only be discussed or described to law enforcement and in a court of law.”

“It is fair to say, however, that no child should ever be subjected to the kind of abuse and degrading sexually predatory misconduct depicted on the tape,” she added.

Kelly’s lawyer, Steve Greenberg, said his client “denies that he is on any tape with underaged girls.”

“The doubt here is self-evident, with reporting that the man on the tape kinda, sorta looks like R Kelly. That doesn’t make it him. It is not him.

Greenberg also said the “larger question” regarding the tape was whether the Dennises would face prosecution over what they “believe is child pornography in their tape collection.”

Meanwhile, lawyer Michael Avenatti, who last month gave prosecutors in Chicago a tape that reportedly shows Kelly engaging in sex acts with a self-described 14-year-old girl, cast doubt on the Dennises’ tape and took a shot at Allred.

“Over the last week, we have had 5 other individuals contact us with tapes that they claim show R. Kelly having sex with underage girls. Upon investigation, they don’t and the individuals would have no reason to have such a tape,” he tweeted.

“Publicizing this ‘evidence’ undermines the process.”

The victims of Sunday’s Ethiopian Airlines crash include a Swedish father-of-three who once lived in Florida and a Slovakian politician’s family.

Jonathan Seex, the CEO of hospitality company Tamarind Group, was aboard the new Boeing 737-8 MAX that crashed just 6 minutes into its route from Addis Ababa to Nairobi, Kenya, killing all 157 people aboard.

“It is with immense shock and grief to inform you of the tragic news that Tamarind CEO, Jonathan Seex, was on the ill-fated Ethiopian Airlines flight,” the company, which owns and operates several restaurants in Africa, said on Facebook. “Our thoughts and prayers are with his family, friends, the Tamarind community and all the others who have suffered unfathomable losses.”

According to his social media, Seex lived in Nairobi with his wife and children. Before moving to Kenya, he spent two years managing a resort in North Carolina and worked in Fort Lauderdale and Boca Raton, FL.

He was one of three Swedish nationals to die in the crash.

Four Slovakians were also on the plane, including the family of politician Anton Hrnko, the vice chairman of the Slovak National Party. He wrote on Facebook that his wife, Blanka, son Martin and daughter Michal, had died.

The three Russian nationals on the flight were also identified by their embassy as Ekaterina Polyakova, Alexander Polyakov and Sergey Vyalikov.

The US embassy said they are “working to determine the identities” of the eight Americans killed.

CIA DIRECTOR TENET'S STATEMENT AT SENATE HEARING FEB. 2

Washington – The greatest threat to US security is the proliferation

of Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD) among rogue states, Central

Intelligence Agency Director George Tenet told the Senate Armed

Services Committee February 2.

In his opening statement to the panel, he said of particular worry to

the Intelligence Community "is the security of Russian WMD (weapons of

mass destruction) materials, increased cooperation among rogue states,

and more effective efforts by proliferants to conceal illicit

activities."

The "changed political dynamic and the economic slide" makes Russia

increasingly unpredictable, Tenet stated. The worsening economic

situation there only increases incentives for Russia to aid in the

proliferation of weapons and technologies.

"China has the potential to affect" the US security posture in Asia,

Tenet acknowledged, "but the extent to which its ambitions and growing

capabilities represent a challenge or threat to US interests is still

an open question."

"Both the Chinese government and Chinese firms have long-standing and

deep relationships with proliferant countries, and we are not

convinced that China's companies fully share the commitments

undertaken by senior Chinese leaders," to prevent the export of

nuclear weapons and fissile material.

North Korea, Tenet said, has become "more volatile and unpredictable"

and is a major global proliferator. "Missiles and WMD know-how are

North Korean products for which there is a real market. North Korea's

sales of such products over the years have dramatically heightened the

WMD threat in countries of key concern such as Iran and Pakistan," he

said. The United States is also concerned about North Korea's

underground construction project at Kumchang-ni, which it suspects to

be a production facility for nuclear weapons, he added.

Tenet warned that the fluid situation in Iran could easily lead to a

"proliferation surprise." This fluidity stems from severe economic

stress which has made it almost impossible for President Khatami to

institute reforms, he said. Adding to the problem are the

conservatives, who are increasingly turning to violence to achieve

their goals, he noted. Tenet predicts that in 1999 Iran will see its

most serious civil unrest in 20 years.
