To this day, it is not known who or what is responsible for the beheadings and disappearances in the Nahanni Valley, but their legacy certainly remains in the menacing place names throughout the valley, such as Deadmen Valley, Headless Creek, Headless Range and the Funeral Range.

More rational theories point to the attacks being carried out by hostile native tribes or rivalries between miners scrambling to find the mythical stores of unfound gold. The disappearances could be the result of any number of perils to be found in the wilderness here.

After all, this is an inhospitable place of extreme cold, filled with unexplored caves, gullies, jagged rocks, and ravenous beasts such as grizzly bears. For all of the ideas offered, in the end no one really knows what decapitated these bodies or why, and it is still unknown as to what happened to the people who disappeared.

It is hard to say what lies behind these mysteries. The area is so forbidding and remote that very few people other than adventurous rafters ever set foot here. Despite its status as a National Park, Nahanni Valley remains for the most part unexplored, and there are very large portions that have never been properly surveyed.

The only geological surveys ever done here were done from the air, and the vast majority of the wilderness here remains an enigma. The few efforts to explore the area in any kind of depth have turned up vast, unknown cavern systems, caves, and huge warrens of underground hot springs and vents previously not known to exist.

Some believe that a lost world full of new species lies here. What other mysteries and oddities does the Nahanni Valley hold? Is there something malevolent hiding out there in this rugged wilderness that could have something to do with its violent and sinister past? Until more investigation is done, it will continue to remain a perplexing and very creepy mystery.

Which I always thought was odd, as it's very hard to get to, no one lives there, there are hardly any animals and its just overall remote.

There are lots of old legends about Skookum or Sasquatch living in the valley.

Plus there are loads of caves. It's supposedly one of the locations where you can enter the underground / hollow earth or whatever you want to call it. Same as Malta and a number of other spots.

I think Shadow State is wrong about Sara Bronfman. I disagree with his assessment that Sara Bronfman has more of a reason not to fund these lawyers than Salinas.

Look, every potential benefactor has a public relations reason NOT to donate money to any NXIVM defense attorneys since nobody wants the bad publicity associated with publicly supporting alleged sex slavers.

This includes EVERY BENEFACTOR, including Salinas and Sara Bronfman.

In fact, if Frank Parlato is to be believed, it was Salinas friend, carlos slim, who arranged a meeting between his own guy (Marco Lopez) and Bill Clinton to attempt an an˜intervention to ensure that his son Emi is not indicted.

Between 1999 and 2002 the United Kingdom, under the auspices of the Bank of England (BOE), sold roughly 395 tonnes of gold, representing over half of the UK’s gold positon. The UK pre-announced the sales, and held 17 auctions during the period. The era became known as “Brown’s Bottom,” named after Gordon Brown, the Chancellor of the Exchequer at the time.

The immediate reaction was a 10% decline in the price of gold. Gold traded between US$253/ounce and US$350/ounce during the period, with the UK averaging roughly US$275 for its gold, and raising about US$3.5 billion (about £2.3 billion). Based on today’s prices of roughly US$1,270/ounce, the UK gold, if sold today, would be worth about US$16.1 billion (£11.3 billion).

While gold prices are up 335% since 1999, the US dollar and the euro, the two prime currencies that the BOE would have substituted for its gold holdings, have declined in value.

Will Canada’s sale of its gold become known as “Poloz’s Bottom,” named after BofC Governor Stephen Poloz? It’s possible, especially if gold was to rise sharply in the coming years, as it did following “Brown’s Bottom.” The UK’s reasoning for selling its gold at the time was that it wanted to diversify its assets away from gold, which was deemed to be too volatile.

Brown’s action attracted a lot of criticism, and in order to deal with this sale a consortium of central banks, led by the European Central Bank (ECB) and the BOE, signed the Washington Agreement in September 1999, limiting gold sales to 400 tonnes per year for the next five years. That agreement was renewed in 2004, and again in 2009.

Flash forward 17 years and the BofC’s reasoning for selling its gold was a “long-standing policy of diversifying its portfolio by selling physical commodities (such as gold) and instead investing in financial assets that are easily tradable and that have deep markets of buyers and sellers.”

Gold, however, is not a commodity – it is money itself, as it has been for over 3,000 years. It is traded daily on the currency desks of major banks around the world. That puts gold in the same category as the US dollar, the euro, and other currencies. The physical gold market is estimated to have an average daily turnover of upwards of US$24 billion daily in both cleared and uncleared OTC markets, according to statistics from the London Bullion Market Association (LBMA).

This makes daily gold turnover trading in the London market on par with the major currencies, and larger than all bond markets, except for the US Treasury bond market and the Japanese government bond market. Gold trades in one of the most liquid markets in the world.

Gold continues to remain an integral part of central bank reserves and the IMF’s Special Drawing Rights (SDRs), along with other currencies. Further, as a demonstration of gold’s liquidity, gold can be included in banks’ liquidity buffers under Basel III regulations. This is an important distinction, because it means private banks can hold gold as a reserve liquidity asset. Central banks, according to statistics from the WGC, hold roughly 32,739 tonnes of gold, of which the IMF holds 2,814 tonnes as of February 2016. The largest reserves of gold remain in the US with the Federal Reserve (Fed), which holds 8,133.5 tonnes according to WGC’s statistics.

Canada held some 1,023 tonnes in 1965. That was the zenith. By 1985 Canada’s holdings had fallen to 500 tonnes. Throughout the 1990s and up to 2002, Canada kept selling its gold. Canada has now reached its nadir in gold holdings. None.

Another argument as to why it doesn’t make sense to hold gold came from Don Drummond, a former senior Finance Department economist and Chief Economist at Toronto-Dominion Bank. Mr. Drummond has stated that it didn’t make any sense to hold gold, because it hasn’t delivered a good rate of return over time and it costs money to store.

While storage costs are a factor in holding gold, it should be noted that, since 2000, gold has outperformed numerous assets, returning 335% vs. 36% for the S&P 500, and 59% for the S&P TSX Composite. Since the world was taken off the gold standard in August 1971 by former US President Richard Nixon, gold has moved from US$35/ounce to about US$1,270/ounce today—a return of 3,528%. The Dow Jones Industrials (DJI) closed at 898 on August 31, 1971, and today sits at about 17,000 for a return of 1,793% before reinvestment of dividends.

But stocks are not reserve assets. Central banks hold primarily US Treasuries. Today, US Treasuries make up about 60% of all reserve assets for most central banks. Prior to 1971, and under Bretton Woods, gold was the largest reserve asset holding. The chart above shows that gold has outperformed US Treasuries by a considerable margin.

Former Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan may have framed gold best with some salient observations. Greenspan said, “In the absence of the gold standard, there is no way to protect savings from confiscation through inflation. There is no safe store of value.” He also said, “Gold is a currency….by all evidence, a premier currency. No fiat currency, including the US dollar, can match it.” Finally, Greenspan said, “Gold still represents the ultimate form of payment in the world. Fiat money in extremis is accepted by nobody. Gold is always accepted.”

Greenspan may have been one of the most forward thinking of all Fed chairmen. He is still revered today.

Central Bank Gold Chart

Since 2010 central banks have been net buyers of gold. In 2015 official purchases were 588 tonnes. The prime buyers have been Russia and China, but other central banks have also purchased gold, as the chart illustrates. Gold purchases by central banks have moved from less than 2% of world demand for gold in 2009 to over 14% today.

Central banks have purchased gold in order diversify their reserve portfolios, especially away from US dollar-denominated assets, with which gold has a strong negative correlation. Others have purchased gold to hedge against tail risks, or because of inflation hedging characteristics, because gold has maintained its purchasing power over a long period of time. Gold plays a prominent part in reserve asset management, given that it is one of the few assets that is universally permitted by the investment guidelines of the world’s central banks. Central banks of the world appreciate the size and liquidity of the global gold market, and that it remains that way even through periods of uncertainty. Out of 188 member countries of the IMF, 100 countries hold gold as part of their monetary assets. Canada is now among the 88 countries that have no gold, countries such as Angola, Belize and Tonga.

Following five years of a downtrend, gold may now be in the early throes of new bull market. The current down market for gold got underway in September 2011, and has lasted 54 months. In terms of length it is one of the longest gold bear markets dating back to the 1970s. Gold currently remains down about 34% from the September 2011 high in US dollars, but is only down 11.6% in Canadian dollars.

At the December 2015 low, gold was down 45% in US dollar terms from the 2011 high. Gold in Canadian dollars made its low in July 2013, and since then is up 35.5%. On average gold in US dollars has fallen 39% during previous corrections.

For the first time since September 2011, gold in US dollars has made new 52-week highs, and taken out two previous highs. More importantly, gold in Canadian dollars has taken out its highs of 2013, 2014 and 2015, suggesting that gold is embarking on a new bull market in Canadian dollars.

A number of analysts, and some prominent banks, are beginning to signal that gold’s long decline may be over. If this proves to be correct, it would add emphasis to the potential for “Poloz’s Bottom.”

Canada’s reserve position at the IMF is currently US$10,412 billion, including SDRs entitling Canada to 111,687 votes within the IMF, or 2.26% of the total. The US has the largest voting block, with 16.8% of the total. But this will change with the inclusion of the Chinese renminbi in SDRs, and each country’s entitlement to votes will also change. With Canada giving up its gold, as well as seeing its reserve position in the IMF, including SDRs, fall US$1.2 billion in the past year, Canada’s voting power and influence in the IMF is bound to fall further.

Along with its largest voting block, the US also maintains a power of veto at the IMF. However, with the IMF’s inclusion of China and its contribution to SDRs in 2016, US voting power will fall and it could lose its power of veto. The US is resisting all attempts to change its current veto power and control at the IMF.

Resistance to change by the US includes attempts to isolate China and Russia. The result has seen the BRICS countries (Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa) set up the New Development Bank (NDB), which could challenge the IMF. It is noteworthy that gold is to be a critical part of the NDB.

While the world’s central banks continue to officially hold 32,739 tonnes of gold as reserves, leasing of gold by the central banks through the bullion banks got underway in the 1990s. Important questions have been raised as to what has happened to the leased gold. It is noteworthy that the Fed has refused all attempts to audit its gold since the early 1950s. At one point it was estimated that, because of leased gold, there was upwards of 16,000 tonnes of central bank gold sold short as a result of leased gold sales.

Sales of leased gold do not appear to show up in any annual statistics of supply and demand. However, it is known that annual leased gold is not zero, with estimates as high as 1,500 tonnes per annum. An inclusion of leased gold in the supply/demand statistics would imply an increase in central bank or investment demand in order to keep supply/demand balanced.

Unlike the Western nations, China and Russia have been building up their gold reserves, even as China understates its current position of gold held by the People’s Bank of China (PBOC). Chinese gold has also been purchased through its sovereign wealth fund, which does not report its holdings, and will at some point be transferred to the PBOC. Meanwhile attempts by some Western banks, such as Germany’s, to repatriate their gold holdings held in foreign central banks, primarily in London and New York, have been met with stalling. Others, such as the Netherlands, have been successful in repatriating their gold. The unanswered question, however, is where is the gold?

Despite all that, no central bank has openly admitted that it has sold all of its gold, as Canada has announced. For Canada, it is truly a case of “…and then there was none.” Canada will likely regret that decision at some point in the future.

Canada's shrinking gold reserves

Canada may be one of the world's biggest gold-mining nations, but the government of Canada hasn't been a big buyer of gold coins, or any other gold, for years. That's not too surprising, since no country now uses a gold standard to value and back its currency.

Year-end data from Finance for each of the last 10 years shows that Canada's gold hoard has been worth a maximum of $181 million US during that span.

At current levels, our gold holdings amount to less than 0.1 per cent of the $82.6 billion US that Canada has in official international reserves.

The U.S., by comparison, had 8,133 tonnes of gold (261.5 million troy ounces) as of the end of 2015, according to the World Gold Council, worth almost $300 billion US. That amounted to more than 72 per cent of its total foreign reserves.

Sporting bleached blond hair, Kurt wove his way through the rubble of Manhattan’s downtown financial district.

Of particular interest was what he found beneath World Trade Center 6.

It is given weight by a similar discovery on a basement door below World Trade Center 4.

According to a New York Times article, the door to a vault was still intact but it appeared as if somebody had tried to gain entry.

Behind the vault door were nearly a thousand tonnes of silver and gold.

According to 911 Research, the vault under WTC 4 was reportedly owned by COMEX:

Reports describing the contents of the vaults before the attack suggest that nearly $1 billion in precious metals was stored in the vaults. A figure of $650 million in a National Real Estate Investor article published after the attack is apparently based on pre-attack reports.

Unknown to most people at the time, $650 million in gold and silver was being kept in a special vault four floors beneath Four World Trade Center.

An article in the TimesOnline gives the following rundown of precious metals that were being stored in the WTC vault belonging to Comex.

Comex metals trading – 3,800 gold bars weighing 12 tonnes and worth more than $100 million

Comex clients – 800,000 ounces of gold with a value of about $220 million

Comex clients – 102 million ounces of silver, worth $430 million

Bank of Nova Scotia – $200 million of gold

It is of note to mention that Sonnenfeld’s wife died under mysterious circumstances shortly after he carried out his investigation. The cause of death? A bullet to the back of the head.

Sonnenfeld was charged with the murder but those charges were eventually dropped, at which point he fled to Argentina. He has since remarried and had two children.

The U.S. Department of Justice is now attempting to extradite Sonnenfeld back to the United States where he is once again being charged with his wife’s murder.

But Sonnenfeld says that the reasons behind the U.S. government’s push to bring him back to America are more nefarious than they are letting on, alluding to his intimate knowledge of the 9-11 Ground Zero crime scene as a potential reason for taking him into custody.

We know for a fact that gold was being stored under Trade Center 4. Perhaps similar riches were being stored under WTC 6.

That the vault was completely empty when Sonnenfeld carried out his investigation certainly suggests foreknowledge by highly placed insiders.

Due to the difficulty taking all the look out due to security / logistics, it would have to be done with a small army all at once (tunnel? would only be a small amount).

Or, it would have to be done by a team overtime and / or disguised.

Most vaults get locked and they don't get opened very often. Maybe 1-2 x per year.

Why. This is a key tie in.

The Canadian Forces are considering whether to recruit elite special-forces soldiers straight off the street rather than forcing them to follow the traditional route of first spending several years in the military.

The idea, which is still being debated, comes as Canada’s special forces — and the military as a whole — look at radical new ways to attract and retain people with the skills and experience needed to fight tomorrow’s wars.

That includes not just computer experts, for example, but also those with different ethnic and cultural backgrounds and language skills, as the special forces aim to operate more effectively in different parts of the world.

“This is not about achieving set quotas or anything else,” Maj.-Gen. Peter Dawe, commander of the Canadian Special Operations Forces Command, told The Canadian Press in an exclusive interview.

Canada has about 2,000 special-forces members whose units include Joint Task Force 2, the Canadian Special Operations Regiment, a special helicopter detachment and a unit that specializes in responding to biological, chemical and nuclear incidents.

The government’s defence policy calls for an additional 600 special-forces members amid a realization of the growing importance of special forces to modern militaries.

Canada currently has about 120 special forces soldiers in Iraq and smaller teams working with counterparts in several other countries, including Belize, Jamaica, Niger and Malaysia.

More diverse special forces would make it easier to make connections in different parts of world, understand the environment, interact with power brokers and figure out a way to respond to changing circumstances, Dawe said.

At the same time, he said expectations within society are changing as young people look at different opportunities available to them, which requires the Forces to make it as attractive as possible to join.

Anyone who wants to join the special forces is required to have at least two years in uniform, though they are often required to attain other qualifications that require more time.

Dawe said some “really hard-charging, high-achieving individuals like varsity athletes and super-talented folks out there on civilian street” are interested in the special forces, but they don’t want to spend several years in the regular military before applying.

“So one of the things we would like to look at is whether there is scope to accelerate that, because there is a qualitative dimension that we might not be exploiting or tapping into as well as we could.”

There is precedent for such a move, Dawe said, pointing to Australia and the U.S. as examples where “accelerated” recruiting has been successful.

At the same time, “inculcating future members of the Canadian Armed Forces, doing that properly, making sure they understand what they are joining and why are joining it, is important,” he said, noting recruits will still need to meet the same standards and go through training.

“You have to make sure you strike a good, healthy balance there in terms of making it as efficient as possible without discarding those important enculturation gateways that have served us so well historically,” Dawe said.

The move toward new ways of recruiting comes as special forces undergo a shift from its primary task of fighting terrorists to face new threats, including the nebulous new type of conflict known as hybrid warfare.

Hybrid warfare is a strategy that uses propaganda, misinformation and cyberattacks to complement conventional military forces or non-conventional forces such as insurgents and proxies. Russia’s intervention in Ukraine is widely seen as a prime example.

While Canada and its allies have struggled to address this new threat, Dawe argued his forces are part of the solution as they put more emphasis on better collecting information — particularly in “murky” environments.

“We just have to make sure we’re not bringing a hammer or even a scalpel to the party,” he said. “You have to bring a whole bunch of ability to illuminate the threat, figure out what it is and what you’re going to do about it.”

You said the operative word is that you did not lie in obtaining your citizenship, you have the same rights. So no minister can take away your citizenship whether you are accused of terrorism, pedophilia, violence. If you are found criminal or guilty of terrorism you are thrown in jail, but the issue of citizenship is a sacred one that should, whether you are a dual citizen or a single citizen, the same rights and responsibilities.
