Labor has asked the auditor general to investigate how the Liberal candidate for the seat of Mayo, Georgina Downer, was allowed to present a taxpayer-funded grant to a bowling club.

Downer, who has been preselected to recontest the South Australian seat after losing a 2018 byelection, was photographed presenting a $127,373 novelty cheque – featuring her face and Liberal party logos – to the Yankalilla bowling club.

The funding was a grant to the club under the federal government’s community sport infrastructure program. Protocol usually dictates that such funding is announced by the local MP.

Rebekha Sharkie, the Centre Alliance MP who beat Downer at the byelection, said on Twitter she had been notified about the grant recipients on Tuesday and had sought to let them know. “However, one was aware and had already organised their Friday night cheque presentation event.

She added: “In more than a decade of politics I’ve never seen a taxpayer funded grant delivered by cheque with a candidate’s face and name on it.”

Federal Human Services Minister Michael Keenan will not contest the next election, making him the second minister to quit ahead of the federal poll.

It is understood Mr Keenan wants to spend more time with his family.

He was elected as the member for the WA electorate of Stirling in 2004.

Mr Keenan was one of a slew of ministers who quit former prime minister Malcolm Turnbull's cabinet ahead of the leadership spill in August 2018.

"Whilst politics is a proud vocation, it is also difficult and exhausting business," Mr Keenan said in a statement.

"The pressures on family life are formidable, as are the constant rigours of being an effective Member of Parliament, as well as a Minister in the Government," he said.

"I have always worked hard as a Member of Parliament and as a Minister, but after doing this for 15 years, I cannot commit to another term.

No one with a sense of justice can fail to be outraged when, in “To Kill a Mockingbird,” a jury in Maycomb, Ala., bows to social pressure and convicts an innocent man of a crime he couldn’t have committed.

Something similar took place last month in real-world Melbourne, Australia, where Cardinal George Pell was falsely and perversely convicted on charges of “historic sexual abuse” dating to the 1990s.

The facts of the case have been hard to come by, owing to a media gag order issued by the trial judge. A journalistic feeding frenzy has long surrounded Pell, the former Catholic archbishop of Melbourne and Sydney and later the Vatican’s chief ­financial officer.

The trial judge was rightly concerned that opening the proceedings would make it impossible for Pell to get a fair trial on charges he forcefully denies. That order has left Australians largely in the dark. But certain facts are known, and others can be reasonably inferred.

The cardinal’s first trial ended in a hung jury, with 10 of 12 jurors in favor of acquittal.

In the retrial, the defense again demonstrated that it was physically impossible for the alleged abuse of two choirboys (one now deceased) to have occurred, given the layout and security ­arrangements of Melbourne’s Catholic cathedral and the fact that the choir and Pell were in two different places when the abuse was alleged to have occurred.

Pell, moreover, was always surrounded by others at the cathedral that day in 1996. Why the Melbourne police never took the trouble to investigate these exculpatory facts is one of several mysteries in this sordid ­affair.

The retrial jury took days to reach a verdict, during which the jurors asked the trial judge for ­instructions on how evidence should be considered. That an overwhelming vote for acquittal at the first trial was then flipped to a unanimous verdict for conviction invites the inference that the jury chose to ignore evidence that the alleged crimes couldn’t have happened.

Legal authorities can debate some of the curiosities of the criminal justice system in Melbourne. Why, for example, can’t a defendant request a bench trial by a judge alone, when a prejudicial public atmosphere makes the ­selection of an impartial jury virtually impossible?

How can a crime alleged to have been committed 22 years ago be prosecuted without any corroborating evidence that it occurred?

How can charges be brought when the public authorities could have easily determined that the ­alleged abuse couldn’t have happened, because the victims and the alleged perpetrator were never in close proximity, much less by themselves without witnesses?

Any judgment on the Pell verdict must also take full account of the atmosphere in which the cardinal’s case was heard. Anti-Catholicism has been a staple of Australia’s culture for decades. Local media long misrepresented Pell, a Church reformer, as a power-hungry ecclesiastical politician, and that caricature made him a convenient scapegoat for the grave crimes of other priests and bishops.

Yet as archbishop of Melbourne, Pell set up Australia’s first process for investigating and compensating claims of clerical sexual abuse. And as archbishop of Sydney, he applied strict protocols to himself, stepping aside until previous spurious abuse charges against him were thoroughly investigated — and dismissed — by a former Australian supreme court justice.

Pell has been taken down, now the internet is coming for his supporters

Despite being handed down a guilty conviction conservative pundits are still lining up to support Cardinal George Pell; is this one controversy too far?

Mere hours after Australia was rocked by the news that George Pell had been convicted of sexually abusing two boys, columnist Andrew Bolt released this:

Bolt has historically been protective of Pell and continued that tradition with the piece, questioning the victim's testimony and the validity of the convicted accusations.

Today, Pell’s application for bail was rescinded and his lawyer Robert Richter reportedly said that Pell’s offending was, “No more than a plain vanilla sexual penetration case where the child is not actively participating.”

Bolt's article still sits on The Daily Telegraph and the internet is not happy.

There is groundswell on social media from the angry public to boycott Bolt that targets his prominent advertisers.

Activist initiative Sleeping Giants Oz has a detailed thread that targets all the companies that run advertisements on Sky Channel's The Bolt Report.

They point out that no paid ads ran on the night Bolt delivered his Pell defence, this was confirmed by an official Sky channel monitor.

People have been reaching out to companies all day, asking them to rethink their advertisements.

There’s also a petition for Newscorp to sack Bolt which has gathered over 4,000 signatures since being launched under 24 hours ago.

WHEN ONE FALLS, THEY ALL FALL

Bolt isn’t the only Pell apologist being raked over coals, fellow Newscorp journalist Miranda Devine is currently trending on Twitter for her piece excusing Pell.

Again, the article is sitting on The Daily Telegraph’s home page, under opinion, right next to Bolt.

She is not trending for positive reasons.

Sitting above Devine on Twitter’s trending topics is former Prime Minister John Howard, who provided a character statement supporting Pell after his conviction was handed down.

Commenters are questioning how this decision will reflect on the Coalition in the upcoming federal election.

Why did Howard, Abbott and the rest come out to support George Pell?

No one could accuse John Howard, Tony Abbott and George Pell’s defenders in the Murdoch press of courting popularity.

They’re brave in the craziest sense. Abbott called Pell after his conviction became public on Tuesday. The cardinal remains

his “friend”.

Calling a convicted paedophile a “friend” might haunt Abbott come campaign season when he’ll be clinging to his seat.

Especially when that convicted paedophile had in Australia presided, controversially and incuriously, over a mighty

institution once so infested with paedophiles it was a quasi paedophile ring.

Howard provided a character reference for Pell, as is his right. He wrote that “none of these matters” – Pell’s conviction

and lodging of an appeal – “alter my opinion of the cardinal.” An odd line; redundant, if nothing else.

How do these former prime ministers reconcile their loyalty to Pell with the shocking crimes he’s been found guilty of? Do

they think that even if he did abuse the two boys, violating their innocence and derailing their lives, he’s still a great

man, deserving compassion?

I don’t believe Howard and Abbott are experiencing such moral dissonance.

The task of entirely rejecting the jury's guilty verdict falls to the Murdoch columnists, who’ve this week more than earned

their danger money. No tough-on-crime rhetoric this time. Now they’re decrying a lynch mob mentality that’s robbed Pell of a

fair trial.

Pell’s “been falsely convicted”, says the Herald Sun’s Andrew Bolt. “That’s my opinion based on the overwhelming evidence.”

Never mind he has no access to the “overwhelming evidence” because in sex offence cases in Victoria the alleged victim’s

evidence is routinely kept secret. Journalists couldn’t even read in the transcript what the jury heard in court.

This is a curious case, for sure. Straight after Mass, behind an open door in a busy cathedral, the archbishop molested two

choir boys he’d never met before. “Only a mad man” would be that reckless, said his lawyer, Robert Richter, QC.

We could respond that some predators get off on precisely this sort of madness. Or as the County Court’s chief judge Peter

Kidd told Richter at this week’s pre-sentence hearing: “He did have in his mind some sense of impunity.”

Or we could say generally that many convictions rest on the victim’s uncorroborated evidence, loose ends and all. Which in

this case apparently includes the question of whether Pell could produce an erect penis through a seamless alb.

Ultimately: in the system we must trust. Even if it’s sensible to make a distinction in our own minds between what the court found had happened and the truth of what happened. Not because Pell’s victim shouldn’t be believed. Because our criminal justice system rests on evidence not belief; and as the evidence here is largely one man’s word, I’d caution against exuberance.

But suggesting the truth of what happened in the cathedral in 1996 might be unknowable, is, however, very different to casting doubt on the court’s finding of what happened.

The doubters claim Pell has been scapegoated for the church’s sins.

“What the last year has shown is that the justice system can be systematically assaulted from the outside (by the media and police) in a conscious attempt to make a fair trial impossible,” says Greg Craven, vice-chancellor of the Australian Catholic University and another referee for Pell, though I’m not suggesting he’s a frontline culture warrior.

“How hard it must have been,” laments the Daily Telegraph’s Miranda Devine, “to find 12 impartial souls after the campaign of vilification against Pell over the past two decades and the carefully orchestrated drip feed of lurid allegations by Victoria Police to selected media against the backdrop of shocking revelations of child sexual abuse by clergy around the world.”

Asks Bolt: “Is it remotely possible that this fevered climate of hatred for our most senior Catholic never leached into the jury room?”

Yet despite this apparently febrile context, the first jury was deadlocked.

Had the “climate of hatred” for Pell leached into that first jury room … only a bit? Are we to conclude that first trial was almost fair, as some souls had evidently remained “impartial”?

Pell’s supporters slag the umpires selectively, assaulting the justice system from outside only when it delivers an outcome they don’t like. They’re determined to see the conviction of one man, albeit one symbolically powerful social conservative, as emblematic of a wider battle, chalking it up as yet another loss to the Left, the haters, the pro-choice, equal-marriage, militant-secularist, non-binary brigade.

It will be fascinating to see the response when the Court of Appeal rules. If the conviction is really as egregious and unreasonable as the pro-Pell camp claims then surely the court will find a way, no matter the legal hurdles, to overturn it? And if the conviction stands, will they accuse even the high priests of justice of succumbing to the mob?

And if the appeal goes Pell’s way, will his supporters declare the justice system healthy, after all? And by the same token, will the Pell “haters” unequivocally accept the court quashing Pell’s conviction? Or will it be their turn to savage the umpires?

Some trials are part of a bigger plot

Doubters’ outcry over Pell verdict disrespectful to jury, legal system

Was George Arthur Pell found guilty, “beyond reasonable doubt”, by a jury of his peers, of orally raping a 13-year-old boy and molesting another? Emphatically, yes.

Despite that undeniable fact, a series of commentators and conservative figures– mostly those who agitated that he never be put on trial in the first place – have sought to cast serious doubt on the verdict.

Those figures include Tony Abbott, who has remained front and centre in public support, despite Pell's conviction.

One of the doubters' key thrusts is that Pell has been found guilty because he is such a high figure in the Catholic Church, and is being made to pay for its manifest sins, rather his own.

To those commentators, let me ask one quick question: what would have been your reaction if Pell had been found innocent and, in my column, I had written, “Yeah well, I know this man, and I’ve looked at the trial transcripts, and I think he is guilty anyway.”

Can you imagine?

As to rest of the commentary, it is extraordinarily disrespectful to the jury members who, after weighing all the evidence, listening to all the testimony, came to the conclusion that he was guilty.

Over 600 Tons of Leaked Oil Expected to Ruin Heritage-Listed Solomon Islands Reef

A terrifying environmental calamity has engulfed the Solomon Islands after a bulk carrier ran aground in last month’s cyclone Oma, threatening the future of a sensitive UNESCO World Heritage site.

The government of the small island nation has demanded urgent assistance in controlling the spill, which has already leaked over 80 tons of oil into the sea and surrounding shoreline and continues to gush into the nearby coral reef, causing a devastating impact on the environmentally sensitive region.

On February 5, the Hong Kong-flagged Solomon Trader, built in 1994, was loading bauxite from a mine on Rennell Island before the cyclone sank the ship onto a coral reef.

Over 660 tons of oil remain on board the leaking vessel along with the ship’s full load of bauxite, the key ore used to make aluminum. The ship was chartered with Indonesian company Bintan Mining Solomon Islands Limited, but its ownership remains unclear.

According to @guardian, the oil is yet to reach East Rennell which is a @UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Australia’s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade has expressed that it was “profoundly disappointed” by the slow response to the unfolding catastrophe, according to the Associated Press.

The spill also threatens to eventually spread to East Rennell, a UNESCO World Heritage site and the largest raised coral atoll in the world. UNESCO officials had called the site “a true natural laboratory” for scientific study – and one which faces danger due to logging and overfishing in the area. The UNESCO World Heritage Centre is working with Solomon authorities in hopes of assisting in damage control.

A source with close knowledge of the incident told The Guardian:

“Once it hits rock the heavy fuel oil is effectively like a bitumen-like substance and has to be removed by hand.”

While Australian officials warn that it remains high’y likely that the oil will be “released” into the sea, salvage crews have scrambled to mitigate the damage and pump the remaining oil from the ship before it breaks up.

“All of the evidence indicates very little prospect of imminent action that would involve getting the oil off the vessel and preventing the ongoing spill,” the source added.

In the meantime, Bauxite mining operations by the company have continued unimpeded. Officials from the Solomon maritime administration have been interviewing mining management officials, however, and are expected to halt the company’s operations.

About 2,000 people live on Rennell Island and rely on the surrounding ocean, as well as its abundant natural resources, for their livelihoods. The island is also home to a number of unique species, including such birds as the bare-eyed white eye, the Rennell shrikebill, the Solomons white ibis and the rare venomous sea krait Laticauda crockeri.

“The impact of this oil spill will have a devastating effect on the surrounding environment, including potentially on a protected UNESCO World Heritage Site, as well as the livelihood of the people of Rennell,” Australian high commissioner Rod Brazier said.

Victoria bushfires: Winery owner's devastation after bushfire destroys 'life's work'

Andrew Clarke, the owner of the Jinks Winery that was destroyed by the Bunyip State Park bushfire, has told 9News of the devastation to his property in light of the blaze.

"Yesterday afternoon we were in Bunyip and saw it on the television and it was pretty distressful having my kids there and seeing their reaction to all of that – it was horrible. It was really bad news," he said.

Cardinal George Pell sued over claim of Ballarat swimming pool abuse

Cardinal George Pell is being sued by a man who claims he was sexually abused by him in a Ballarat swimming pool.

The man’s lawyers, Arnold Thomas & Becker, are lodging the civil suit with the Victorian Supreme Court today claiming Pell abused the man in the 1970s.

The alleged victim is seeking damages for psychiatric injury, loss of wages and medical expenses.

Victoria Police filed criminal charges relating to the alleged abuse that made it through the committal proceedings in 2018 but were dropped by prosecutors before trial.

“It took a lot of courage and soul-searching to be prepared to tell my story, accusing one of the most senior Catholics in the world of serious criminal offences, and eventually I was ready to have my day in court,” the plaintiff said.

“But when I was told they had withdrawn the case I felt empty, and that an injustice had occurred.”

In the statement of claim, the man claims damages including exemplary damages stating there is a need for general deterrence.

“The third defendant’s (Pell’s) abuse of the Plaintiff was a disgrace and was conducted in circumstances where he took complete advantage of his position of power vis-a-vis the Plaintiff and is deserving of punishment,” it states.

The man’s lawyer Lee Flanagan said he was seeking to call at least three other witnesses who would make similar separate allegations.

“There was a fourth witness, but he died after charges were laid against Pell,” Mr Flanagan said.

“We may seek to tender his statement into evidence in this case.”

Two other charges relating to allegations of sexual abuse in a pool were dropped following pre-trial argument.

The plaintiff, now 50, was a resident of St Joseph’s Boys Home at the time of the abuse.

The lawsuit is against Pell, the trustees of Nazareth House (formerly St Joseph’s), the State of Victoria and the Catholic Archdiocese of Melbourne.

Mr Flanagan said the damages trial was expected to begin in a year’s time and last approximately 10 days.

Pell was convicted in December of five counts of child sexual abuse relating to two choirboys at St Patrick’s Cathedral in 1996 and 1997.

He will be sentenced next Wednesday.

Christopher Pyne backs Australia joining Asia's 'Our Eyes' intelligence group

Jakarta: Australia stands ready to join the "Our Eyes" ASEAN intelligence group and provide counter-terrorism information and training to the group, Defence Minister Christopher Pyne says.

The Our Eyes initiative was founded in January and is made up of six ASEAN nations – Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Brunei.

It focuses on combating the rise of militant groups and violent extremism in the region, with a particular concentration on regional hot spots in places such as the Philippines' city of Marawi, which was last year attacked by a group aligned with Islamic State. The Our Eyes nations have vowed to cooperate and share information between both national militaries and police forces.

Its name evokes the long-established "Five Eyes" intelligence group, which is made up of Australia, the United States, Britain, New Zealand and Canada.

Mr Pyne told Fairfax Media on Thursday, ahead of his first meeting with Indonesian Defence Minister Ryamizard Ryacudu in Bali, that Australia and Indonesia already enjoyed a deep level of defence and intelligence cooperation but joining Our Eyes could take this to the next level.

"We will talk about the Our Eyes proposal Mr Ryamizard is sponsoring. We are yet to be formally invited to Our Eyes but we are open to joining and providing information and also training," he said.

"Our role would be to engage in the training of their people, their personnel, in the gathering of information and in the analysis of that information, which we have significant capabilities in, as do they."

"If we receive an invitation we will consider what it means in terms of our commitments and how it fits with our national security priorities. It might well be that it's not a significant commitment beyond what we already share with Indonesia."

My Pyne added that Australia and Indonesia already shared a significant amount of information about foreign fighters returning from the Middle East, for example, as well as radical Islamists based in Indonesia.

Although Australia and the Philippines already share intelligence information in the fight against Islamic State and extremism in the region, any move to deepen that intelligence relationship may potentially be controversial given President Rodrigo Duterte’s hardline approach to law and order, which has included extra-judicial killings.

Mr Pyne and Mr Ryamizard will discuss a range of other matters, including the response to earthquake in Palu – to which Australia sent humanitarian aid – maritime security and cooperation and the recently signed comprehensive strategic partnership agreement between Australia and Indonesia.

Australian National University south-east Asia security expert Greg Raymond said Australia could play the role of "honest broker" if it were to join the grouping, and encourage greater cooperation between nations that have traditionally been reluctant to share information with each other.

"There are issues of sovereignty and turf protection. But the problems in Marawi for example are far from solved, it's very much a live issue," he said.

"Australia needs to continue to keep pushing for higher degrees of cooperation between the ASEAN countries than they have been used to."

""Dr Raymond said that if Australia joined the grouping, it was possible that high level intelligence from the western Five Eyes grouping could be shared"" – but it would have to be carefully screened first.

"That wouldn’t be unprecedented. There are formal, deliberate processes on how you provide information that can be helpful, but which protects Australia’s sources."

But the bulk of the intelligence information Australia could share would likely not come from Five Eyes group.

"Australia has the Australian Federal Police working closely with its Indonesian counterparts already. There has long been sharing of sensitive information on criminal and potential terror suspects."

John Pilger: From Room 101 the Prisoner Says No to Big Brother

Julian Assange will never obey Big Brother.

His resilience and courage are astonishing, even though his physical health struggles to keep up.

Whenever I visit Julian Assange, we meet in a room he knows too well. There is a bare table and pictures of Ecuador on the walls. There is a bookcase where the books never change. The curtains are always drawn and there is no natural light. The air is still and fetid.

This is Room 101.

Before I enter Room 101, I must surrender my passport and phone. My pockets and possessions are examined. The food I bring is inspected.

The man who guards Room 101 sits in what looks like an old-fashioned telephone box. He watches a screen, watching Julian. There are others unseen, agents of the state, watching and listening.

Cameras are everywhere in Room 101. To avoid them, Julian maneuvers us both into a corner, side by side, flat up against the wall. This is how we catch up: whispering and writing to each other on a notepad, which he shields from the cameras. Sometimes we laugh.

I have my designated time slot. When that expires, the door in Room 101 bursts open and the guard says, “Time is up!” On New Year’s Eve, I was allowed an extra 30 minutes and the man in the phone box wished me a happy new year, but not Julian.

Of course, Room 101 is the room in George Orwell’s prophetic novel, 1984, where the thought police watched and tormented their prisoners, and worse until people surrendered their humanity and principles and obeyed Big Brother.

Julian Assange will never obey Big Brother. His resilience and courage are astonishing, even though his physical health struggles to keep up.

Julian is a distinguished Australian, who has changed the way many people think about duplicitous governments. For this, he is a political refugee subjected to what the United Nations calls “arbitrary detention”.

The UN says he has the right of free passage to freedom, but this is denied. He has the right to medical treatment without fear of arrest, but this is denied. He has the right to compensation, but this is denied.

As founder and editor of WikiLeaks, his crime has been to make sense of dark times. WikiLeaks has an impeccable record of accuracy and authenticity which no newspaper, no TV channel, no radio station, no BBC, no New York Times, no Washington Post, no Guardian can equal. Indeed, it shames them.

That explains why he is being punished.

For example:

Last week, the International Court of Justice ruled that the British Government had no legal powers over the Chagos Islanders, who in the 1960s and 70s, were expelled in secret from their homeland on Diego Garcia in the Indian Ocean and sent into exile and poverty. Countless children died, many of them, from sadness. It was an epic crime few knew about.

For almost 50 years, the British have denied the islanders’ the right to return to their homeland, which they had given to the Americans for a major military base.

Perhaps she was merely “acting on instructions” when she flew to London and Washington last year with her ministerial chief of staff, who had indicated that the Australian Foreign Minister would raise Julian’s case and hopefully begin the diplomatic process of bringing him home.

Julian’s father had written a moving letter to the then Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull, asking the government to intervene diplomatically to free his son. He told Turnbull that he was worried Julian might not leave the embassy alive.

Julie Bishop had every opportunity in the UK and the US to present a diplomatic solution that would bring Julian home. But this required the courage of one proud to represent a sovereign, independent state, not a vassal.

Instead, she made no attempt to contradict the British Foreign Secretary, Jeremy Hunt, when he said outrageously that Julian “faced serious charges”. What charges? There were no charges.

Australia’s Foreign Minister abandoned her duty to speak up for an Australian citizen, prosecuted with nothing, charged with nothing, guilty of nothing.

Will those feminists who fawn over this false icon at the Opera House next Sunday be reminded of her role in colluding with foreign forces to punish an Australian journalist, one whose work has revealed that rapacious militarism has smashed the lives of millions of ordinary women in many countries: in Iraq alone, the US-led invasion of that country, in which Australia participated, left 700,000 widows.

So what can be done? An Australian government that was prepared to act in response to a public campaign to rescue the refugee football player, Hakeem al-Araibi, from torture and persecution in Bahrain, is capable of bringing Julian Assange home.

The refusal by the Department of Foreign Affairs in Canberra to honor the United Nations’ declaration that Julian is the victim of “arbitrary detention” and has a fundamental right to his freedom, is a shameful breach of the letter and spirit of international law.

Why has the Australian government made no serious attempt to free Assange? Why did Julie Bishop bow to the wishes of two foreign powers? Why is this democracy traduced by its servile relationships, and integrated with lawless foreign power?

The persecution of Julian Assange is the conquest of us all: of our independence, our self-respect, our intellect, our compassion, our politics, our culture.

So stop scrolling. Organize. Occupy. Insist. Persist. Make a noise. Take direct action. Be brave and stay brave. Defy the thought police.

War is not peace, freedom is not slavery, ignorance is not strength. If Julian can stand up, so can you: so can all of us.

Before she entered politics, Julie Bishop was a lawyer who served the notorious asbestos miner James Hardie which fought claims by men and their families dying horribly with asbestos.

Lawyer Peter Gordon recalls Bishop “rhetorically asking the court why workers should be entitled to jump court queues just because they were dying.”

Bishop says she “acted on instructions … professionally and ethically”.

Barclays : Trader's Case Is Dismissed

WASHINGTON – A federal judge dismissed without sending to the jury a case against a former senior Barclays PLC trader accused of illegally trading in anticipation of a major client deal, highlighting the problems prosecutors have faced in efforts to hold individuals liable for allegations of corporate misconduct.

In a 13-page order issued Monday, Senior U.S. District Judge Charles Breyer said the government pursued a case that "violated no clear rule or regulation, was not prohibited by the agreements between the parties, and indeed was consistent with the parties' understanding of the arms-length relationship in which they operated."

The case against Robert Bogucki, the former head of foreign exchange trading in the Americas for Barclays, grew out of a broader investigation into multiple banks' roles in allegedly trying to manipulate financial benchmarks and foreign exchange rates, which led multiple banks to pay billions of dollars in penalties but has left prosecutors with a mixed record of success in pursuing individuals allegedly involved in the conduct.

Mr. Bogucki was indicted last January and accused of misusing information HP Inc. had provided the bank in 2011 to execute a deal that involved selling GBP6 billion ($8 billion) worth of U.S. dollar and British pound exchange-rate options.

The indictment included colorful language between Mr. Bogucki and his colleagues, including saying they would "bash the shit out of" selling those options before executing the HP transaction to push down the price, and issuing warnings to stay quiet or "your ass will be in a f – frying pan."

After a five-day trial, defense lawyers filed what is called a Rule 29 motion which asked Judge Breyer – who had said at trial he was concerned about a potential "massive due-process problem" with the case – to dismiss the charges before they went to a jury.

Milo Yiannopoulos banned from entering Australia

A decision to block right-wing star Milo Yiannopoulos from Australia has enraged Pauline Hanson, who called the government “gutless and weak”.

The government has reportedly rejected alt-right star Milo Yiannopoulos’s application for a visa to enter Australia.

Mr Yiannopoulos, who has shot to fame by saying provocative and often offensive things, was rejected on character grounds, The Age and Sydney Morning Herald report.

He has a month to appeal the decision.

It comes on the heels of “men’s rights” group founder Gavin McInnes being blocked from entering the country in December.

And it isn’t entirely unexpected.

Last week, Herald Sun columnist Andrew Bolt published an excerpt from a letter the Immigration Department had sent to Mr Yiannopoulos describing its reasoning.

It said there was a risk Mr Yiannopoulos would “incite discord in the Australian community or in a segment of that community”, pointing to the large protests that happened during his last visit to Australia in 2017.

“Despite the locations of your previous appearances being withheld by the organisers until 24 hours prior to the events, there were significant protests at both the Sydney and Melbourne events,” the department wrote.

“The protest at the Melbourne event involved violence between those protesting and your supporters. You were issued with a bill of $50,000 by Victoria Police for the cost of policing your event.”

Mr Yiannopoulos was hit with the massive bill after a riot broke out at the entrance to his show. Two people were arrested and five police officers were injured.

Mr Yiannopoulos responded to his rejection by posting on his official Facebook page this afternoon.

“I can’t improve on Pauline Hanson’s assessment,” he said, going on to quote the One Nation leader.

“I’m sad to say the government is now acting as an arm of Antifa. Milo and Tommy have not called for violence. They have been the victims of violence. By refusing them entry into Australia this gutless government is validating the left’s use of violence to silence people,” Ms Hanson said.

The Tommy to whom she refers is the right-wing British activist Tommy Robinson.

Ms Hanson lobbied Immigration Minister David Coleman on Mr Yiannopoulos’s behalf in the lead-up to the decision. On Monday she accused Mr Coleman of delaying and “glossing over” the issue to “keep me at bay”.

“I think that is weak, I think it’s gutless. He has no reason to stop Milo from coming into the country,” she said.

“You may not agree with everything he says, as long as he doesn’t go out there to advocate violence. If you want to actually stop someone, stop the protesters with their violence. They’re the ones that should be stopped.”

Today she reacted furiously to the Immigration Department’s decision.

“I am angry. I can’t see what Milo has done to be banned from Australia,” Ms Hanson told The Australian.

“The left are pushing this. It’s all about the election, it’s all about votes.”

I volunteered as an abortion counsellor in Queensland decades ago and every day I’d cry: sometimes with the women who were seeking help and sometimes by myself, late at night.

Anyone who has ever worked or volunteered in reproductive health knows that feeling. Here we are trying to support women making a choice for their own lives in a country where that choice is so badly restricted.

These restrictions make life hard for women and hard for their families. They make so many of us cry, and not just those of us seeking an abortion.

This is not a story about my abortion or the abortions of other individuals. It’s a story about how the system might finally be changing, and how so many women struggled over the years to make abortion safe, free and legal.

There will be names I haven't mentioned and names I don't know. But to all of you, whoever you are, thank you. The tears can stop soon.

Today the Australian Labor Party made me cry all over again when Tanya Plibersek announced public hospital systems would need to provide abortion services to qualify for federal funding.

This news is the response to decades of campaigning in Australia.

Plibersek tells me she was still in primary school when she fought for the right to play on the boys’ playground. In high school, she stood with her friends to rally for abortion rights. Now she’s the politician announcing this huge shift, which will impact every single area of every single state and territory but NSW most of all, because abortion is still in the criminal code.

“Making the decision to end a pregnancy is difficult enough for a woman without being forced to travel hundreds of kilometres or go interstate to access services, I can’t imagine how traumatic that would be,” she said.

Politicians get to campaign at the heart of policy change but so many women struggled for this in the background.

It’s a change that Anne Summers, in Australia to speak at the National Press Club in Canberra on Wednesday, has been waiting for since she published her legendary history of Australian women Damned Whores and God’s Police in 1975, which described the impact the criminalisation of abortion had on maternal deaths.

“The vital thing is to ensure women in rural and regional areas will now have access to services they don’t have now," she said. "I hope it encourages more doctors to perform these procedures because the barriers are on the supply side as well as the demand side.”

And maybe the youngest of all our campaigners, Meg Clement-Couzner, now the spokesperson for Pro-Choice NSW, got into terrible arguments with friends and family in her early teens. Then she went to university to discover there were a bunch of other people who felt just the same way she did about reproductive rights and wanted to be part of a collective movement for change.

“These proposals are fantastic," she says. “I feel so strongly about how women don’t have full control of their bodies and that won’t change until abortion is publicly funded and normalised."

Clement-Couzner says that move towards bodily autonomy should also include banning the forcible sterilisation of women with disability, as well as access to all chosen medical treatments for trans people.

So to all of you who campaigned, rallied, marched, wrote letters, shared your abortions: thank you.

Politicians get to campaign at the heart of policy change but so many women struggled for this in the background.

There will be some way to go, some terrible things said about this campaign and about the women who fought for it, and worse things about the women who have finally developed the policies we all need.

But together we can ignore the haters and embrace the rights we should all have, no matter who we are.

Redback spider eats venomous snake in Australia

Nature lover Robyn McLennan stumbled upon a frightening sight while taking pictures at a winery in Victoria, Australia, last week: a highly venomous redback spider taking on a deadly eastern brown snake — an extremely venomous creature known for its aggression.

McLennan, of Bright, Victoria, snapped high-resolution photos of the fierce wildlife battle and posted them to a Facebook group for the Australia-based conservation organization Field Naturalists Club of Victoria.

A series of three photos reveals the redback spider striking and trapping the huge snake in its web, though McLennan says that's not all the arachnid did.

"The spider has now brought the entire snake off the ground and it is [suspended] mid-air, just under the lower lip of the tank," McLennan described in the post.

Wildlife enthusiasts said McLennan had a "once in a lifetime" view and urged the photographer to share more details.

"Amazing, I would love to see some sequences photos of what happened next," one Facebook user replied.

"That totally needs a time-lapse sequence of what happens next," another agreed.

"Her eyes are definitely bigger than her belly!" a third commented on the spider's size.

"Amazing! That's a pretty big snack for a small spider," a user echoed.

The eastern brown snake is considered one of the most dangerous serpents in the world.

"Eastern brown snakes, together with other browns are responsible for more deaths every year in Australia than any other group of snakes. Not only is their venom ranked as the second most toxic of any land snake in the world (based on tests on mice), they thrive in populated areas, particularly on farms in rural areas with mice," Australian Geographic once described in a blog post.

While it may be horrifying sight, snake experts say it's not a terribly unusual occurrence.

"All animals are opportunistic feeders, as in they’ll eat what they can, to survive," Brisbane Snake Catchers, a snake removal service in Queensland, explained on Facebook in reference to the recent incident.

Redback spiders typically feed on insects, other arachnids and small lizards but they can also prey on larger creatures thanks to their powerful venom.

"Redbacks will kill its prey by injecting a complex venom called alpha-latrotoxin from its two fangs, the spider then trusses its victim with silk, immobilizing the victim's limbs and appendages sticking itself to its own body. Once the prey is restrained, it is then bitten repeatedly on the head, body and legs, then hauled back to the spiders retreat to consume," the group explained.

According to the Australian Museum, "only the female bite is dangerous" and they become more aggressive during the summer.

Church knew Pell was at centre of decades-old lurid sex claims

The claims were lurid and unverified so Helen Last, the counsellor hired by the Catholic Church in Melbourne to assist victims of clerical abuse, agonised before reporting them to her superiors.

It was 1996 and the newly appointed archbishop, George Pell, had just set up the Melbourne Response to handle the rising numbers of sex abuse claims received by the archdiocese.

An ex-seminarian known as ‘‘Joe’’ came forward alleging that Pell and several other priests had, 10 to 15 years earlier, been having sex with Mannix College trainee clerics at ‘‘parties … involving young men’’.

Joe was not a strong witness. He wanted $20,000 for compromising photographs that appeared to be of Pell and others engaged in sexual acts, but could not produce the negatives. Despite this, Ms Last felt she could not dismiss Joe's allegations.

She reported the claims to her superior and also to the vicar-general, Monsignor Gerald Cudmore (who died in 2007).

‘‘He was shocked, and said, ‘We have to do something,’ ’’ she said.

Ms Last says she developed suspicions about Pell very early during her work with the Archdiocese of Melbourne.

She heard many stories from victims of clergy sexual abuse in different parishes, especially that Pell knew what was happening and was protecting priests who were abusing children.

‘‘It was alleged to me early that Pell was among a group of offenders from Ballarat to Melbourne. They were part of the Ballarat organised clerical offending, which extended down to Laverton and around Melbourne.’’

While the credibility of the claims made by ‘‘Joe’’ were never substantiated, a detailed memo of the ex-seminarian’s allegations, seen by The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald, demonstrates that the church was aware of complaints about Pell’s character dating back more than 20 years.

In light of Pell’s conviction for sexual abuse of two choirboys in 1996, The Age and The Sydney Morning Herald believe there is public interest in revealing the trail of complaints that have dogged the cardinal’s career.

If the ex-seminarian’s claims are included, there are nine known allegations about sexual misconduct against Pell, ranging from exposure to assault, although only two – his sexual abuse of the choirboys – have been upheld by a court.

Rumours have surrounded the cardinal, especially among survivors of abuse and their advocates, for many years. Some of the allegations might seem preposterous at first, but the same argument was made by some about the choirboy's claim that he and another boy were assaulted more than 20 years ago. This makes the other allegations more relevant.

Ms Last’s contract was terminated in May 1997 as a result, she claims, of her defying explicit instructions from archbishop Pell and then vicar-general Denis Hart to stay away from the Doveton parish, which suffered six paedophiles in succession as parish priest or assistant priest.

One Doveton priest was the deranged Peter Searson, who wandered the Catholic school in military clothing, sometimes carried a gun, stabbed a bird with a screwdriver and tortured a cat. He was also molesting many children.

A teacher at the time, Carmel Rafferty – whose attempts at whistleblowing ended her career in Catholic education – said a delegation went to Pell, Searson’s bishop, to share their concerns, but these were dismissed. Pell told the royal commission that this was because he was deceived by archbishop Frank Little and the education office.

After she was sacked and the pastoral response office closed, Ms Last set up In Good Faith and Associates to support survivors. She also set up the Melbourne Victims’ Collective, which has 120 members who complain they were traumatised by the Melbourne Response.

‘‘I believe Pell set up the Melbourne Response partly to protect himself. I believed that from the beginning … He had no understanding of victim care,’’ she says.

A former articles editor of the Law Review at Georgetown University, Podesta served as an assistant U.S. Attorney in the District of Columbia. Earlier, he was director of admissions and a political science instructor at Barat College of the Sacred Heart in Lake Forest, Illinois.

During the 1980’s Podesta served as founding president of People for the American Way, the constitutional liberties organization founded by television producer Norman Lear and prominent clergy, educators, business executives and civic leaders.

He has appeared on major broadcast and cable networks and his writings on governmental, legal, educational, economic, and cultural issues have been published in The New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, Newsday, Baltimore Sun and other leading newspapers.

A former counsel to the late Senator Edward M. Kennedy and a frequent advisor to former President Bill Clinton, Podesta has provided leadership and strategic guidance to a host of politicians.

Podesta takes an active role with many civic and arts groups nationwide having served as co-chair of the Community and Friends Board of the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, as chairman of the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum Photography Committee, former board member of the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden as well as the National Museum of Women in the Arts, as a member of the Presidential Committee on the Arts and Humanities under President Clinton, a board member for the MIT List Visual Arts Center and as a member of the National Board of the Contemporary Art Museum of St. Louis.

He received his B.A. from the University of Illinois at Chicago, was a Ph.D. candidate at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and received a J.D. from the Georgetown University Law Center. He served as student body president at the University of Illinois’ Chicago campus and in 2006 was inducted into the university’s Navy Pier Hall of Fame for distinguished alumni.

Podesta grew up in Chicago’s Third-Ninth Ward as the eldest child in a family with roots in Italy and Greece.

Warner Brother CEO ensnared in alleged Sex for Roles Scandal

Married Warner Bros. chairman and CEO Kevin Tsujihara allegedly had sex with a 21-year-old actress in a “motel,” promising her big movie roles and dispatching disgraced director Brett Ratner to get her auditions, a new report reveals.

British actress Charlotte Kirk was introduced to Tsujihara, 54, in an early-hours meeting at the Hotel Bel Air in 2013 (the year he took over as CEO), the Hollywood Reporter reveals. It was just announced that Tsujihara, who has two children with wife Sandy, would become one of Hollywood’s most powerful execs, taking a larger role at the studio overseeing assets such as The Cartoon Network.

But after the 2013 meeting with Tsujihara, Kirk wrote of the studio head in a text to her alleged ex-lover, Australian billionaire James Packer, “He just wants to f**k nothing else does not even want to say anything!” At the time, Ratner and Packer’s RatPac-Dune Entertainment (a joint venture between RatPac and now-Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin) was sealing a $450 million deal with Warner Bros.

Despite Tsujihara allegedly having offered to “back” Kirk for the movie role that instead went to Anne Hathaway in “The Intern,” she texted Tsujihara in 2015, “You’re very busy I know but when we were in that motel having sex u said u would help me and when u just ignore me like you’re doing now it makes me feel used.”

Ratner — then producing a slate of movies for Warner Bros. including “Wonder Woman 2” before he was scrubbed in 2017 following multiple sexual harassment allegations — had introduced Kirk to Packer when she was 20, the story states.

In 2016, Ratner desperately tried to broker her silence via his attorney Marty Singer, who penned a contract promising the young actress a specific number of auditions in Warner Bros. and Ratner-directed movies — which she refused to sign.

According to texts seen by THR, Kirk complained she was passed between the male execs, writing in a text, “You came to me Brett after Kevin told you to because you’re the one who set me up with James [Packer].”

In 2015, Ratner got frustrated and responded to the actress, according to THR, “If you are going to be fucking someone for a part it should be a director or a producer.”

Meanwhile, Ratner and Tsujihara’s lawyers, Singer and Bert Deixler, have carried out a concerted effort to keep a lid on their clients’ alleged dealings with the blond actress.

Both have threatened Page Six with lawsuits in response to our attempts to report on elements of this story.

Cardinal Pell's appeal process to begin in June

Melbourne, Australia, Mar 6, 2019 / 11:25 am (CNA).- An Australian court announced Wednesday that Cardinal George Pell's application for leave to appeal his conviction of sexual abuse will be heard June 5-6.

Pell, 77, was convicted in December on five counts of sexual abuse stemming from charges that he sexually assaulted two choirboys while serving as Archbishop of Melbourne in 1996. He has maintained his innocence.

It was the cardinal's second trial, as a jury in an earlier trial had failed to reach a unanimous verdict. The first jury were deadlocked 10-2 in Pell's favor.

Pell's appeal will by led by barrister Bret Walker, SC, who will be assisted by Robert Richter, QC, the cardinal's defense lawyer; Paul Galbally, his solicitor; and Ruth Shann, Richter's junior barrister.

The cardinal's appeal will be made on three points: the jury's reliance on the evidence of a single victim, an irregularity that kept Pell from entering his not guilty plea in front of the jury, and the defense not being allowed to show a visual representation supporting his claim of innocence.

The appeal document, The Age reported, says that “the verdicts are unreasonable and cannot be supported, having regard to the evidence, because on the whole of the evidence, including unchallenged exculpatory evidence from more than 20 Crown witnesses, it was not open to the jury to be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt on the word of the complainant alone.”

Pell is incarcerated at the Melbourne Assessment Prison while he awaits the results of a sentencing hearing, which will be announced March 13.

In December, a district judge overturned the May 22 conviction of Archbishop Philip Wilson for failing to report allegations of child sexual abuse disclosed to him in the 1970s, saying there was reasonable doubt a crime had been committed.

The judge, Roy Ellis, said acceptance of the accuser “as an honest witness does not automatically mean I would be satisfied beyond reasonable doubt that he complained to Philip Wilson in 1976 that James Fletcher had indecently assaulted him.”

The news of Pell's conviction has met with varied reactions. While many figures in Australian media have applauded Pell’s conviction, some Australians have called it into question, prompting considerable debate across the country.

Greg Craven, vice-chancellor of the Australian Catholic University, suggested that the justice process was tainted by media and police forces that had worked “to blacken the name” of Pell “before he went to trial.”

“This is not a story about whether a jury got it right or wrong, or about whether justice is seen to prevail,” Craven said in a Feb. 27 opinion piece in The Australian. “It’s a story about whether a jury was ever given a fair chance to make a decision, and whether our justice system can be heard above a media mob.”

Pell was ordained a priest of the Diocese of Ballarat in 1966. He was consecrated a bishop in 1987, and appointed auxiliary bishop of Melbourne, becoming ordinary of the see in 1996. Pell was then Archbishop of Sydney from 2001 to 2014, when he was made prefect of the newly-created Secretariat for the Economy. He served on Pope Francis' Council of Cardinals from 2013 to 2018. Pell ceased to be prefect of the economy secretariat Feb. 24.
