UK meets with international coalition to keep space safe

The Combined Space Operations Initiative (CSpO), a ten-nation space coalition spanning four continents, met in Toulouse, France, to discuss the security of space.

Representatives from Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, New Zealand, Norway, the United Kingdom, and the United States, gathered in France to address space threats, conduct a tabletop exercise, and progress efforts to strengthen resilience and interoperability among likeminded partners and allies.

In an increasingly contested and volatile space environment, CSpO aims to enhance coordination of defence space operations, tackle emerging challenges in space, and advocate for the responsible and lawful use of space.

SpaceX launches Starlink missions in dual-coast spaceflight doubleheader

SpaceX launched two more batches of Starlink satellites today (Dec. 17), in a pair of launches from both U.S. coasts.

First up was a Falcon 9 rocket carrying 29 of the broadband internet relay units (Group 6-99) into low Earth orbit from Launch Complex 39A at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

The satellites were successfully deployed about an hour and five minutes after the 8:42 a.m. EST (1342 GMT) liftoff on Wednesday.

"Deployment of 29 Starlink satellites confirmed," SpaceX reported on social media.

The Florida flight's first stage booster (B1094) completed its sixth flight, landing on the "Just Read the Instructions" droneship stationed in the Atlantic Ocean.

Then came 27 more Starlink satellites (Group 15-13), riding atop a Falcon 9 rocket launched from Space Launch Complex 4 East (SLC-4E) from Vandenberg Space Force Base in California.

Lifting off at 10:27 a.m. EST (1527 GMT or 7:27 a.m. PST local time), the mission was on track to deploy its payload about an hour after leaving the ground.

The California flight's first stage booster (B1063) performed its 30th propulsive landing, touching down on the droneship "Of Course I Still Love You" in the Pacific Ocean.

The 56 (in total) Starlink satellites launched on Wednesday add to SpaceX's megaconstellation, which now numbers more than 9,400 units in orbit.

The network provides access to the internet to areas around the globe where other options for connectivity is sparse, as well as enables in-flight wifi and cell-to-satellite service on select carries.

Wednesday's dual launches were SpaceX's 164th and 165th Falcon 9 flight of the year.

STARCOM leaders outline vital role in forging combat-credible space forces

Dec. 16, 2025

Leaders from Space Training and Readiness Command discussed how the command builds combat credibility for the U.S. Space Force during multiple engagements at the Spacepower Conference Dec. 11–12 in Orlando.

Across panels, fireside chats, and media engagements, STARCOM leaders underscored that combat credibility begins with STARCOM through the development of Guardians and the rigorous validation of the systems they operate before forces are employed in operations.

Combat credibility

Maj. Gen. James E. Smith, commander of STARCOM, and Chief Master Sgt. Karmann-Monique Pogue, command senior enlisted leader of STARCOM, participated in a main-stage fireside chat and later met with members of the media.

Smith and Pogue expanded on how STARCOM turns that responsibility into reality across the force, preparing Guardians and systems to perform together under the conditions they will face in operations.

“Everything we do has to be focused on the Space Force's mission of protecting our nation's interests in, from, and to space, which ultimately drives our ability to achieve space superiority," said Smith.

“We do that by taking equipment from SSC [Space Systems Command], Guardians off the street as civilians, merge all that together, and deliver combat credible Space Forces.”

They explained that combat credibility depends on more than individual skill, requiring integration across STARCOM to prepare forces under realistic conditions.

Building a Guardian-specific Basic Military Training experience

Leaders from Space Delta 1, the STARCOM unit responsible for U.S. Space Force Basic Military Training, explained how BMT continues to evolve as a Guardian-led training program.

Maj. R. Andy Mathews, Delta 1, Detachment 3 commander, and Chief Master Sgt. Brandon Bellmore, the detachment’s senior enlisted leader, described how Guardians now train under Space Force leadership from the day they arrive through graduation at Joint Base San Antonio–Lackland.

They explained that the updated training model emphasizes Guardian identity, teamwork, resiliency, and cognitive agility to meet Department of War requirements for military training.

Leaders noted that BMT establishes shared standards and culture early, preparing Guardians for follow-on technical training and operational assignments.

Education and partnerships across the Guardian lifecycle

Dr. Thomas J. Griffy, deputy commander of Space Delta 13, joined the panel “Academia, Industry, and Military in the Next Generation” to discuss the role of education in force development.

He explained that Delta 13, the STARCOM unit responsible for Space Force education and continuing professional development, works to align education opportunities with operational needs.

He discussed how partnerships with academia and industry help expose Guardians to new perspectives while strengthening technical expertise and critical thinking skills required for modern space operations

Panelists emphasized that continued education supports readiness by helping Guardians adapt as missions, technologies and threats evolve, including in areas such as artificial intelligence.

Education through the National Security Space Institute

Space Delta 13’s National Security Space Institute Commandant Col. Albert Harris spoke during a fireside chat focused on continuing education and professional development.

Harris described how NSSI recently shifted from traditional academic calendars to education cycles aligned with Space Force Generation timelines, allowing Guardians to access education when it is most relevant to upcoming assignments.

“Our vision is delivering readiness, generating combat power,” Harris said. “That means providing the right education at the right time, so Guardians can immediately apply what they learn to real operational challenges.”

Harris also highlighted NSSI’s role in strengthening partnerships through education, noting the institute routinely educates U.S. Guardians alongside international partners to build shared understanding in the space domain.

Russia’s battlefield claims and “strategic initiative”

In 2025, Russian forces have liberated more than 300 populated areas, including major cities and fortified territories, Putin said, noting that the Russian army “has gained and continues to hold the strategic initiative along the entire line of contact.”

Russian forces had liberated 24 settlements and 400 square kilometers in Russia’s Zaporozhye and Ukraine’s Dnepropetrovsk regions since November, according to Belousov.

Putin also praised North Korean soldiers who have fought alongside Russian forces in the Kursk Region.

Ukraine’s losses and reduced combat capability

Ukraine has lost nearly 500,000 servicemen this year alone, Belousov said, adding that Ukraine’s combat capability had been “reduced by about a third” over the past year, stripping Kiev of the ability to replenish its forces through forced mobilization of civilians.

According to the minister, Ukraine has lost more than 103,000 weapons and pieces of military equipment this year, including about 5,500 of Western manufacture – almost double the total recorded the previous year.

“What was obvious from the start has been confirmed – the collapse of the Ukrainian army’s defenses is inevitable,” Belousov said, stressing that “finally, Kiev’s Western backers understand this clearly.”

Kiev’s deepening crisis and “golden toilets”

Ukraine’s statehood is “unraveling,” Putin said, pointing to massive corruption scandals linked to Vladimir Zelensky’s inner circle and symbolized by “golden toilets.”

The scandal, which has sent shockwaves across the Ukrainian political landscape since kicking off in mid-November, involved Zelensky’s longtime close associate Timur Mindich, who fled the country last month hours before he was due to be arrested for extortion.

Reports also surfaced of a gilded toilet in the businessman’s elite Kiev apartment.

The case drew in multiple other high-profile figures, leading to the downfall of the justice and energy ministers and the dismissal of Zelensky’s enigmatic chief of staff, Andrey Yermak, who was widely regarded as the key figure in the Ukrainian power structure.

The Russian president also emphasized what he described as mass desertions in Ukraine. More than 100,000 criminal cases have been opened in the country, while the number of deserters “runs into the hundreds of thousands,” he said.

Ukrainian drones strike oil refinery in Russia's Krasnodar region

Ukrainian drones attacked a Russian oil refinery in Slavyansk-on-Kuban and other energy infrastructure overnight, blacking out the city and injuring at least two people in the Krasnodar Krai region of southwestern Russia.

Footage circulating online, captured by residents, showed a large fire at the Slavyansk ECO plant and the sound of explosions and air defenses in action.

Authorities said Wednesday that the drone strikes damaged two high-voltage power lines, knocking out the electricity supply to more than 60% of the city's 63,000 population, with more than 13,000 people still without power.

Confirming its forces had targeted the oil plant with "deep strike" weapons, Ukraine's General Staff said it was still assessing the damage inflicted.

The Russian Defense Ministry said air defenses intercepted and shot down 47 Ukrainian drones above Krasnodar Krai and the waters of the Azov and Black Seas.

Two civilians were being treated in the hospital after being injured by debris falling from downed drones in the Slavyansky district and several houses sustained damage, Krasnodar Region operational command said.

It said houses were also damaged in surrounding areas to the north and east of the city.

Neither the defense ministry nor the Krasnodar operational command made any mention of the refinery.

The Slavyansk ECO plant, strategically placed to export into the international market from its location in the Kurban River delta close to Black Sea and Asov Sea oil terminals, refines 4 million tons of oil a year, according to the operating company's website.

A further 47 drones were shot down over Russia's Rostov, Voronezh, Saratov, Volgograd and Bryansk regions, according to Moscow.

Saratov is more than 600 miles from Ukraine, deep inside Russia.

Wednesday's attack came amid a recent widening of offensive operations by Kyiv, targeting both Russia's industrial war machine and high-value military targets in Russian territory.

On Monday, Ukraine's Security Service said it had disabled a Russian Kilo-class submarine using an underwater drone at the Black Sea port of Novorossiysk in Krasnodar Krai, the first time it had successfully carried out such an attack.

Ukraine mounted a large-scale attack against Russian military and oil facilities in occupied Crimea overnight Saturday, striking two oil depots, including one in Simferopol, the capital, and a substation in Dzhankoy, according to Ukrainian military news website, Militarnyi.

A Kasta-2E2 surveillance radar and an S-400 air defense system radar were also hit.

Ukraine Special Operations Forces claimed its drone operators struck a moving train delivering fuel for Russia's armed forces near Yantarne on the peninsula, 35 miles northeast of Simferopol.

Ukraine's General Staff said on social media Sunday that targets in Russia were also hit, including the Afipsky Oil Refinery in Krasnodar Krai, the Uryupinsk oil depot in Volgograd Oblast, a chemical plant in Veliky Novgorodas well as several other energy facilities.

A power station in Smolensk, 220 miles southwest of Moscow, was also set ablaze after being struck by drones.

On Friday, the Slavneft-YANOS oil refinery in Yaroslavl, one of Russia's five largest, northeast of Moscow and more than 630 miles from Ukraine, was struck by drones with locals reporting at least five explosions at the plant.
