The US could be allowed to step up its military presence in Greenland, the prime minister of Denmark has said. Mette Frederiksen made the comment as she reiterated that the world’s largest island was not for sale.

Denmark hopes to defuse an escalating crisis triggered by Donald Trump’s desire to buy the Danish-governed landmass on national security grounds. The US president has refused to rule out military or economic coercion to seize control of the island.

Speaking before an EU meeting in Brussels, Ms Frederiksen said: “I totally agree with the Americans that the High North, the Arctic region, is becoming more and more important when we are talking about defence and security and deterrence.

“And it is possible to find a way to ensure stronger footprints in Greenland,” she added, before repeating that the resource-rich territory was part of Denmark and “not for sale”. The territory already hosts an American military base that monitors space and detects missile threats. She told reporters the US “can have more possibilities”.

Russia and China have been working to boost their influence in the Arctic, a key region for transportation and resources. Climate change is expected to trigger a race for power in the area as new waterways and territories for settlement open up as ice melts.

Ms Frederiksen said Denmark and Nato were also willing to scale up their presence in the Arctic.

“So if this is about securing our part of the world, we can find a way forward,” she added.

Denmark ‘not a good ally’

Ms Frederiksen has sought to drum up support from her fellow EU leaders in the stand-off between Copenhagen and Washington. Before the EU meeting, JD Vance, the US vice-president, said the acquisition of Greenland was still very much on the table.

He told Fox News: “It’s really important to our national security. There are sea lanes there that the Chinese use, that the Russians use, that frankly, Denmark, which controls Greenland, it’s not doing its job and it’s not being a good ally.

“So you have to ask yourself, how are we going to solve that problem, solve our own national security? If that means that we need to take more territorial interest in Greenland, that is what President Trump is going to do, because he doesn’t care what the Europeans scream at us.“He cares about putting the interests of America’s citizens first.”(It's terrible)

Ms Frederiksen hit back at Mr Vance’s claims on Monday. “We have fought side by side with the Americans for many, many decades,” she said.

“I will not accept the notion that Denmark is a bad ally. We are not, we have not been, and we will not be in the future.”

The suggestion of potential Danish military concessions to Mr Trump comes after Panama said it would withdraw from China’s Belt and Road Initiative, a Beijing-led global infrastructure project, following US pressure. On Sunday, Mr Trump had threatened to “take back” the Panama Canal unless Panama ended Chinese influence over the strategically vital waterway.

Donald Tusk, the Polish prime minister, criticised the US overtures towards Greenland and urged the EU to stay united. “We need a clear and firm European stance. Given the threat from Russia and China’s expansion, we cannot afford to be divided,” he said.

Mr Tusk, who also holds the EU’s six-month rotating presidency, said he had spoken to Ms Frederiksen and conceded that Mr Trump’s demands were “a serious test of our solidarity”.Emmanuel Macron, the French president, also warned his US counterpart that the bloc would retaliate to any tariffs.

“If we are attacked in terms of trade, Europe – as a true power – will have to stand up for itself and therefore react,” he said. Ms Frederiksen said: “I will never support the idea of fighting allies. But of course, if the US puts tough terms on Europe, we need a collective and robust response.”

Michael Martin, the Irish prime minister, also called on EU states to “act as one” if Mr Trump followed through on his threat, while Olaf Scholz, the German chancellor, said a trade war would be bad both for Europe and the US.

Kaja Kallas, a leading EU diplomat and the former Estonian prime minister, said there were “no winners in trade wars” and warned that if one did break out “then the one laughing on the side is China”. Meanwhile, other EU leaders called for talks with Mr Trump to avoid any tit-for-tat tariffs escalating into a trade war.

Petteri Orpo, Finland’s prime minister, said: “We have to negotiate with Trump. I’m not going to start a war. I want to start negotiations.” Nauseda, the Lithuanian president, also suggested that Europe could buy more weapons and liquefied natural gas from the US.

He said: “We have to propose something that could be interesting and attractive for the United States like free trade agreements in the automotive industry or buying more energy resources.” An EU official said the European leaders in Brussels had “expressed their full support and solidarity with Denmark, and recalled the relevant principles of international law”.

Last week, Cassidy - a physician, looked like he was a 'no,' grilling RFK over his vaccine stance and demanding that Kennedy renounce his anti-vaccine activism. Kennedy declined, prompting intense discussions between the two over the weekend.

Prior to entering politics, Cassidy was a gastroenterologist who created a program to vaccinate nearly 36,000 children in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana. During his first three terms in the House, he pushed for increased funding for vaccinations in a majority-black district that spans Baton Rouge to Shreveport. He also pushed the COVID-19 vaccine, which Kennedy once described as "the deadliest vaccine ever made."

Kennedy was grilled in two days of committee hearings last week, while it's unclear whether he has the votes for passage in the Senate, even with Republicans' 53-47 majority.

Bondi is also directing the DOJ to identify all funding agreements with nongovernmental organizations (NGOs) that support illegals.
