Supercharged auroras possible this weekend as colossal 'hole' in the sun spews solar wind toward Earth

A massive coronal hole has formed in the sun's atmosphere, unleashing a powerful stream of solar wind toward Earth. Nearby, a second, slightly smaller coronal hole is also directing solar wind our way.

There is a great chance of strong northern lights, especially at high latitudes this weekend.

Recent solar activity has prompted the U.S. National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Space Weather Prediction Center to issue a minor G1 geomagnetic storm warning for Jan. 4 and Jan. 5.

While geomagnetic storm watches of this level are not uncommon, it's not something to ignore.

A recent uptick in geomagnetic activity produced stunning northern lights displays that reached deep into mid-latitudes over New Year's.

Aurora chasers at high latitudes may be in for another spectacular treat. Make sure those camera batteries are charged!

NOAA classifies geomagnetic storms using a G-scale, which ranks their intensity from G1 (minor) to G5 (extreme). The recent geomagnetic storm watch NOAA issued is rated as a G1.

Coronal holes appear as dark areas in the sun's corona — the outer atmosphere — when viewed in extreme ultraviolet (EUV) and soft X-ray imagery, according to NOAA.

These 'holes' appear dark because they are cooler than the surrounding material. Coronal holes allow solar wind to escape from the sun more readily, resulting in streams of relatively fast solar wind.

When directed at Earth, these solar wind streams can interact with our planet's magnetic field and trigger geomagnetic storm conditions.

Though G1 conditions are predicted for the weekend, remember that space weather, much like Earth's weather, is unpredictable and difficult to forecast.

Even though geomagnetic storm warnings at this level are not uncommon, they can occasionally amount to nothing.

To stay updated on space weather and know the best times and places to catch auroras, consider using a space weather app tailored to your location.

President Jimmy Carter, who died Sunday, is remembered as a humanitarian and a champion of human rights around the globe.His legacy, though, includes supporting amilitary regime in El Salvadorduring the beginning of the Salvadoran Civil War, includingthe assassination of Saint Óscar Romero.

The United States sent military and economic aid to the government of El Salvadorduring its bloody 12-year civil war, and trained military leaders. A reminder that the Cold War was not always “cold,”75,000 people were killed in the war, most at the hands of the military and death squads.

Some consider it less of a civil war andmore of a proxy war(Ukraine); America’s justification for its involvement wasthat communism was spreadingfrom the Soviet Union, Nicaragua, and Cuba. But in reality, the leftist guerrillas were motivated more by the material conditions within their own country — extreme economic inequality — than by any kind of international movement. Some experts speculate that the guerrillas would have won were it not for U.S. involvement.

The country never fully recovered from the war, as evidenced by the hundreds of thousands of people who have fled El Salvador for the U.S. in recent years. The country has been plagued with gang violence andpreviously had the highest murder rate in the world; now it has the world’s highest incarceration rate, as its current government has jailed tens of thousands, including many thousands of innocents, under a “state of exception” suspending basic civil liberties.

At the beginning of the civil war, Archbishop Óscar Romero took an active role in arguing for human rights and an end to the violence in the country in his weekly homilies that were broadcast on the radio. While he viewed himself as apolitical,Romero’s pro-human rights stance naturally placed him in opposition to the Salvadoran military.

Originally something of a centrist, hebecame radicalized when his friend, Father Rutilio Grande Garcia, a Jesuit priest, was killed. The junta, Romero said repeatedly, was killing innocent people. He endorsed agrarian reform, a program to redistribute large areas of land to the campesinos, or peasants.

The Carter administration was paying attention. In January 1980, theU.S. reached out to Pope John Paul II about Romero. In the letter, Zbigniew Brzezinski, Carter’s national security advisor, noted a “shift” in Romero’s rhetoric. The Archbishop, he wrote, “has strongly criticized the Junta and leaned toward support for the extreme left.”The “extreme left,” he wrote, was responsible for the violence in the country — not the junta, or the death squads.

Brzezinski wrote: “We have cautioned the Archbishop and his advisors strongly against support for an extreme left which clearly does not share the humanitarian and progressive goals of the church.” He asked that the Pope intervene. Romero met with the Pope in Rome shortly thereafter.

But Romero kept pushing. In February, he reached out to the U.S. with great concern. He wrote to President Carter expressing his misgivings about the possibility of the U.S. sending aid to his country. TheU.S. was thinking about giving military aid — a $49 million aid packagewith up to $7 million in military equipment — to El Salvador. Romero wrote:“the contribution of your government, instead of promoting greater justice and peacein EI Salvador, will without doubt sharpen the injustice and repression against the organizations of the people who repeatedly have been struggling to gain respect for their most fundamental human rights.”

He continued: “For this reason, given that as a Salvadoran and as archbishop of the Archdiocese of San Salvador I have an obligation to see that faith and justice reign in my country, I ask you,if you truly want to defend human rights, to prohibit the giving of this military aid to the Salvadoran government.Guaranteethat your government will not intervene directly or indirectly with military, economic, diplomatic, or other pressures to determine the destiny of the Salvadoran people.”

SpaceX Thuraya 4 Mission

SpaceX is targeting Friday, January 3 for Falcon 9’s launch of the Space42 Thuraya 4 mission to a geosynchronous transfer orbit from Space Launch Complex 40 (SLC-40) at Cape Canaveral Space Force Station in Florida.

The four-hour window opens at 8:27 p.m. ET. If needed, a backup opportunity is available on Saturday, January 4 at the same time.

The U.S. decided to send the aid, andCarter did not respond personally. Instead, Secretary of State Cyrus Vance responded to Romero, writing:“We appreciate your warningsabout the dangers of providing military assistance given the traditional role of the security forces in El Salvador.”

“We are as concerned as you that any assistance we provide not be used in a repressive manner,” Vance continued, adding that any assistance would thus go toward enhancing the armed forces’ “professionalism” so they would be able to maintain order while using “a minimum level of lethal force.”

Romero knew he was putting himself at risk. Two days after he sent the letter to Carter, the Catholic radio station that broadcast his weekly sermons was bombed. But he had to keep going. “I would be lying if I said I don’t have an instinct for my own preservation,” he said, “but persecution is a sign we are on the right road.” He added: “We are now in the middle of a current that cannot be stopped, even if one dies.”

In March 1980, the day before his assassination, Romero addressed the Salvadoran National Guard, police, and the military in his sermon: “I would like to make an appeal, especially to the men of the army, and concretely to the National Guard, the police, and the troops. Brothers, you are part of our own people.You are killing your own brother and sister campesinos,” he said. “The Church defends the rights of God, the law of God, and the dignity of the human person, and there cannot remain silent before such abominations… In the name of God, then, and in the name of this suffering people, whose laments rise more each day more tumultuously to heaven,I beg you, I beseech you, I order you in the name of God: stop the repression!”

The next day , while he was giving communion at the chapel of the cancer hospital where he lived, a gunman pulled up in a Volkswagen. The man entered the room, shot Romero, and fled.

According to a nun, on the way to the hospital,Romero said: “May God have mercy on the assassins.”He was 62.

Carter called Romero’s assassination “a shocking and unconscionable act.” He said the archbishop “spoke for change and for social justice, which his nation so desperately needs,” and demanded that the Salvadoran government “bring the archbishop’s assassins to justice.” (FU Carter!)

We still don’t have all the answers about Romero’s killing, but theCarter administration got an inklingin November 1980, when a Salvadoran National Guard officertold a U.S. embassy political officer that Major Roberto D’Aubuisson organized a meeting a day or two before the assassination where participants drew lots to see who would carry out the killing. D’Aubuisson had been trained by the U.S. at the Defense Department’s notorious School of the Americas. In other words, the Carter administration had reason to believe that a U.S.-trained military officer orchestrated the killing of a future saint, and — with this knowledge — continued working with that military.

That’s not to say the Carter administration didn’t care about human rights. When D’Aubuisson visited the U.S. in mid-1980, the Carter administration was embarrassed by “his open presence in the country,” writes human rights attorney Matt Eisenbrandt in Assassination of a Saint: The Plot to Murder Óscar Romero and the Quest to Bring His Killers to Justice. One example of the Carter administration’s commitment to human rights is that it cut direct aid to Guatemala in 1977 during the Guatemalan genocide.

Debbie Sharnak, assistant professor of history and international studies at Rowan University, describes the line that Carter walked in his foreign policy: “By according the broad notion of ‘human rights’ such a prominent place in his administration,Carter raised expectations without clearly defining the limitations of human rights and the reach of its policy. This vagueness, combined withhis inability to articulate the limited capacity of U.S. influence, hamperedhis policy and the public’s perception of his effectiveness.”

Iranian suspect detained in Italy in US drone case praying for Italian reporter detained in Tehran

The fate of an Italian journalist detained in Tehran and an Iranian engineer imprisoned in Italy on a U.S. warrant grew even more intertwined Friday as the Iranian awaits possible extradition to the United States to face charges he provided drone technology to Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard corps.

A Milan court scheduled a hearing for Jan. 15 to decide whether to keep Mohammad Abedini at Milan’s Opera prison or grant him house arrest pending the start of the lengthy extradition process.

The U.S. government hasn’t commented publicly on Abedini’s petition, but in the past it has complained to Italy’s justice ministry about a half-dozen cases of suspects wanted by the U.S. who escaped from the Italian justice system before they could be extradited.

On Friday, lawyer Alfredo De Francesco visited Abedini in prison and said his client had asked him about Cecilia Sala, an Italian reporter detained in Tehran just days after Abedini was arrested at Milan’s Malpensa airport on a U.S. warrant.

Italian commentators have speculated that Iran is holding Sala as a bargaining chip to ensure Abedini’s release, and both governments have linked their fates to one another in public statements.

“He asked me to write the name of Cecilia Sala on a piece of paper we had with pen, so that he could correctly pronounce her name,” De Francesco told reporters outside the prison.

“And he told me that he would pray a lot for her and himself in these days.”

He said Abedini had heard about Sala’s case inside the prison and didn’t understand any connection to him. The lawyer stressed that on the surface the two cases are separate.

“He asked me if she had been arrested and how she had been arrested, and why in some way they wanted to connect her to him,” the lawyer said.

“I explained the situation to him, even what is said on television, because it is useless to deny it, but I explained to him.”

“He was very moved by this thing, to know that she is a woman in prison right now, and so he prays for her, for him,” he said.

Sala, a reporter for the Il Foglio daily, was detained in Iran on Dec. 19. She had arrived in the country on Dec. 13 on a journalist visa and was arrested on charges of violating the laws of the Islamic Republic, the state-run IRNA news agency said.

On Dec. 16, the U.S. Justice Department announced charges against Abedini and another Iranian citizen accused of supplying the drone technology to Iran that was used in a January 2024 attack on a U.S. outpost in Jordan that killed three American troops.

Abedini was detained that day at Milan’s Malpensa airport on a U.S. warrant seeking his extradition.

U.S. federal prosecutors charged Abedini and his co-defendant with export control violations after FBI specialists analyzed the drone navigation system used in the Jordan attack and traced it to them.

U.S. prosecutors said Abedini’s Tehran-based company manufactures navigation systems for the military drone program of Iran’s paramilitary Revolutionary Guard.

Iran’s embassy to Italy has connected Sala’s fate to that of Abedini, saying in a statement posted to X that it will respect Sala’s rights and expects Italy to do the same for Abedini.

“It is reciprocally expected from the Italian government that, in addition to expediting the release of the detained Iranian citizen, he will be provided with the things he needs,” said the statement, which was issued after Ambassador Mohammadreza Sabouri was summoned to the Italian Foreign Ministry for consultations Thursday.

Iran added that it considered Abedini was being held on “false charges.”

The delicate diplomatic triangle poses something of a headache for the government of Premier Giorgia Meloni, which is still stinging from the embarrassment of having lost track of another high-profile target wanted by the U.S.

Russian businessman Artyom Uss, wanted by the U.S. on alleged sanctions violations, escaped from Italy in 2022 after he was granted house arrest, despite warnings from the U.S. that he was a flight risk.

Uss, the son of a Russian regional governor, later resurfaced in Russia. Meloni acknowledged at the time that there were grave “anomalies” in the handling of his case and ordered an investigation.

Milan’s general prosecutor, Francesca Nanni, has opposed Abedini’s motion for house arrest, saying he’s a flight risk and that not even guarantees from Iran’s consulate in Milan were sufficient to ensure he wouldn’t disappear.

The issue could come up next week when Meloni hosts President Joe Biden on his final foreign trip before leaving office.

Drone attack on administrative building near Tabqa

In the canton of Tabqa, an administrative building of the Democratic Administration of North and East Syria (DAANES) was bombed by a Turkish combat drone on Friday.

According to the Hawarnews news agency (ANHA), the strike targeted an office building in the town of al-Hurriya.

Information about the extent of the attack or about any injuries was not immediately available.

Al-Hurriya is located about 50 kilometres northwest of Tabqa city and is situated east of the Euphrates.

Since the beginning of the offensive by the Turkish-controlled jihadist group ‘Syrian National Army’ (SNA) on Manbij and the Tishrin Dam, attacks in the region have become more frequent.

China condemns U.S. plans to restrict drone imports over security concerns

The Chinese Foreign Ministry has voiced strong opposition to the U.S. Commerce Department’s recent announcement regarding potential new regulations that could restrict or ban Chinese drones in the United States, citing national security issues.

On Thursday, the U.S. Department of Commerce’s Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS) issued a statement seeking public feedback on a proposed rule aimed at “safeguarding the information and communication technology and services supply chain for unmanned aircraft systems,” or drones.

The announcement raised concerns that commercial drones could be remotely accessed and manipulated by entities in China and Russia, thus “exposing sensitive US data.”

During a routine press conference on Friday, spokesperson Mao Ning stated that China firmly opposes the U.S.’s broad interpretation of national security, which she argued disrupts normal international trade and economic exchanges.

She further asserted that such actions undermine the stability of global industrial and supply chains.

Mao reaffirmed that China would take all necessary measures to protect its legitimate rights and interests in response to these developments.

Iran ready for nuclear talks if treated with ‘respect’ – FM

The outcome of any nuclear talks with Iran would ultimately depend on the willingness of the US and its allies to treat the Islamic Republic with respect, Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi told the Tasnim news agency in an interview published on Thursday.

The minister insisted that his nation’s nuclear program is entirely peaceful and that Tehran is ready to address any concerns other nations have. However, Iran will not place any limitations upon itself as long as its actions remain geared towards peaceful development.

“We operate within that scope. Those who have concerns are welcome to come forward so we can discuss and negotiate to address their worries,” Araghchi said.

Iran’s top diplomat also warned that the tactics of sanctions would not work with the Islamic Republic, particularly referring to the “maximum pressure” policy employed by the US during the first term of incoming President Donald Trump.

“The more they impose sanctions and pressure on Iran, the more Iran will show resistance,”Araghchi said. He called on the Western nations to treat his country with dignity instead. “If they opt for the course of fair, just and dignified negotiations and speak with the language of respect, we will speak that language as well.”

According to the minister, the US and its allies only understand the language of strength. The Islamic Republic’s missile capabilities are what make the West want to talk instead of using force, he believes.

“I have said many times and firmly believe that if it weren’t for our missile capabilities, no one would be negotiating with us,” Araghchi told Tasnim. “If they could destroy our nuclear facilities with a military strike, why would they bother sitting down with us for over two years to negotiate? … The reason is that they did not have the capability to militarily eliminate our facilities.”

Iran’s uranium enrichment activities have long been perceived by the West as a clandestine attempt to develop atomic weapons – something that Tehran has repeatedly denied. In 2015, the Islamic Republic reached a nuclear deal with world powers, known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, that limited Iran’s nuclear program in exchange for partial sanctions relief.

However, in 2018 the US unilaterally withdrew from it under Trump. Iran has since stepped up its enrichment capabilities while efforts to revive the deal have thus far failed. Last month, the head of the International Atomic Energy Agency, Rafael Grossi, said that Iran was “dramatically”accelerating its uranium enrichment to up to 60% purity, calling this development “very concerning.”
