UK's Labour Party May Be Breaking Law Campaigning for Harris

The United Kingdom’s Labour Party, which is currently in power, may be breaking election laws in the United States by sending 100 members to campaign in key battleground states on behalf of Vice President Kamala Harris, the Democrat presidential nominee.

According to a now-deleted LinkedIn post, Sofia Patel, head of operations for the Labour Party, is organizing a delegation of current and former party members to travel to North Carolina, Nevada, Pennsylvania, and Virginia to stump for Harris.

Conservative political commentator Robby Starbuck told The Michael Patrick Leahy Show that up until last year, Patel worked very closely with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on a day-to-day basis. Though Starmer is a member of the Labour Party, it does not appear that he or members of his government are involved.

Starbuck also reported that Patel worked on the Hillary for America campaign for two months in field operations in 2016, while still employed by the Labour Party.

An election lawyer told the Telegraph that the Labour volunteers risk breaking election laws in the U.S., which could lead to the Harris campaign being sanctioned.

Under federal law, a volunteer’s travel expenses are considered a donation if they exceed $1,000. Volunteers were reportedly told to pay for their own flights and car rentals, while Democrat operatives would “sort out” their housing.

The current cost of a plane ticket from London to Washington, D.C., ranges from $500-$1,000, with additional expenses incurred to travel to battleground states.

“The cost of getting here by air, if it is less than $1,000 it would be okay, but anything more than that it becomes very problematic in my opinion,” Lawrence Otter, a constitutional and electoral law expert, told the Telegraph.

According to Otter, the Harris campaign could be hit with a “substantial” fine if the travel costs exceeded $1,000.

While foreign citizens can campaign in the U.S. if travel costs are under $1,000, they cannot be paid or hold any decision-making sway on party operatives, according to U.S. election law.

Trump ally and U.K. Parliament member Nigel Farage decried the Labour Party’s move.

“This is direct election interference by the governing Labour Party, and particularly stupid if Trump wins,” Farage, a Reform U.K. party member, said on Friday. “Who is paying for all of this?”

The former president’s stateside allies also slammed the foreign interference in U.S. elections.

Tech billionaire Elon Musk called the action “illegal” and Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene, R-Ga., railed against the involvement of “foreign nationals” in American elections.

“Please go back to the UK and fix your own mass immigration problems that are ruining your country,” Greene wrote in a post on X.

PENNSYLVANIA WARNS OF MISDEMEANOR CHARGES

The biggest of the swing states, Pennsylvania, has already overruled a county official who tried to prevent the use in her district of drop boxes, where early voters can deposit their mail-in ballots.

Luzerne County Manager Romilda Crocamo, a Democrat appointed by the Republican-majority county council, in September scrapped plans to deploy drop boxes, citing concerns about safety. The decision came shortly after the Republican National Committee threatened to sue the county if it did not assure the security of the boxes.

State Attorney General Michelle Henry, in an Oct. 3 letter, warned Crocamo that only the county elections board could decide whether to deploy drop boxes under state law and that if Crocamo failed to comply she could face criminal misdemeanor charges punishable by fines and up to a year in prison.

The county relented shortly afterward.

Henry, a former Republican appointed to her role last year by the state's Democrat governor, said in an interview that her office would continue to enforce election laws.

"We certainly are ready," Henry said. "Should anyone not comply with the statutes, we will investigate that and there will be consequences … There's both criminal and civil actions that could be taken to maintain the integrity of the process."

Crocamo's attorney, Mark Cedrone, said the threat of an RNC lawsuit played no role in his client's initial decision to oppose the use of drop boxes. She was instead influenced by activist groups that have openly targeted what some refer to as the county's "cheat" boxes for action, Cedrone said, adding that Crocamo remains deeply concerned about safety.

WISCONSIN INVESTIGATES MAYOR

The criminal division of the Wisconsin Justice Department is investigating Wausau Mayor Doug Diny for removing a locked, empty drop box from outside City Hall in September. Diny, a nonpartisan conservative backed by Republicans, told reporters at the time that he did not feel the box was secure where the city clerk had placed it.

Diny, who did not respond to queries seeking comment, shrugged off a July Wisconsin Supreme Court ruling that allowed placement of drop boxes by municipal clerks.

"The Supreme Court interprets the law - this is my logic - does not make the law, does not make state statutes, does not make state ordinances," Diny explained this month at a meeting of the Wausau Common Council.

Wisconsin Attorney General Josh Kaul, a Democrat, declined to comment specifically on the Diny investigation but said his office would enforce election laws.

"It's our expectation that election officials will follow the law," Kaul said in an interview. "But if we receive concerns that that won't be the case, we're prepared to act."

MICHIGAN: FELONY CHARGES, POTENTIAL FISCAL PENALTIES

In Michigan's Macomb County, where Republicans unsuccessfully sued to overturn the 2020 election results, three assistant clerks in the city of St. Clair Shores face felony charges for allegedly allowing four residents to vote twice in the state's Aug. 6 congressional and state primary election.

Democrat Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel filed charges punishable by up to five years in prison against all seven.

"Despite common talking points by those who seek to instill doubt in our election process, double voting in Michigan is extremely rare," Nessel said in a statement. "Nevertheless, the fact that four incidents occurred in a municipality of this size raised significant concerns."

The charges have raised objections in St. Clair Shores.

"In my opinion, this is not voter fraud. This is, to me, political theater," Kip Walby, the city's nonpartisan mayor, told a city council meeting at which he called on Nessel to drop the charges.

Walby told Reuters that three of the accused are not assistant clerks but "part-time seasonal election workers," two of whom worked only on the day of the election.

Nessel spokesperson Kimberly Bush said the mayor was "grandstanding in defense of illegal activity" and that the attorney general would continue to take election violations seriously.

Michigan authorities have taken a different tack against officials who refuse to certify elections by leveraging state election laws that were tightened in the aftermath of 2020.

Delta County canvass board members Bonnie Hakkola and LeeAnne Oman, both Republicans, voted against certification of a local recall election on May 14, after seeing nearly identical voting margins in three different races.

"Because of that, they felt something was 'off' and couldn't in good conscience certify the election," Delta County Clerk Nancy Przewrocki said in an email.

State authorities responded two days later.

"County canvassers have a clear and nondiscretionary duty to certify election results," state elections director Jonathan Brater told them in a May 16 letter. "All costs associated with the state canvass … will be the responsibility of the county."

The next day, the board met again and certified the results. This time, Oman, an alternate, was replaced by a full-time board member who had been absent on May 14. Hakkola abstained but read from a prepared statement expressing her concerns. Both later resigned.

"I am being coerced into signing a document," Hakkola said. "I am doing my best to protect the votes of the citizens of Delta County and to ensure free and fair elections by bringing transparency and reassurance to all Delta County citizens."

Przewrocki said a hand-count of ballots matched the tabulator exactly in an audit performed after certification.

Oman said in an interview that she and Hakkola wanted a hand recount to verify the results before certification but the request was denied. According to the state recount manual, county election results must be certified before a recount can occur.

"After it's certified, it's out of our hands. We don't have any authority other than our signature," Oman said. "The request should have been granted. It shouldn't have made national news."

ARIZONA: FELONY CHARGES

Two Republican officials from Arizona's Cochise County face felony election interference charges, alleging they delayed the canvass of votes in the 2022 elections.

Cochise County supervisors Tom Crosby and Peggy Judd voted to delay canvassing, despite multiple warnings that missing the Nov. 28 state deadline would amount breaking the law, court documents show. They expressed doubts about the accuracy of voting machines. Prosecutors say the delay interfered with a statewide canvass.

Judd and Crosby are due to stand trial in January on felony charges punishable by up to 2-1/2 years in prison. They have pleaded not guilty.

But Judd is scheduled for a court status conference involving a possible change of plea on Monday.

Judd said in an August interview that she has no concerns about the 2024 election in Cochise County: "I'm positive about this election, feeling like things are going to be just fine."

Secretary of State Adrian Fontes and Attorney General Kris Mayes, both Democrats, have made it clear publicly that state election laws will be enforced going forward.

"We have spoken very clearly with clerks and chief judges in these jurisdictions about what the process should be and the speed with which they should act," Fontes told reporters. "I don't anticipate any of these shenanigans."

Nearly a year ago, Mayes also warned supervisors in Mohave County not to violate state law by directing the local election board to count 2024 results by hand instead by voting machine. In a letter, she said the supervisors could be held liable for the cost of the illegal hand count and face felony and misdemeanor charges.

NEVADA: POSSIBLE PROSECUTION, FORFEITURE OF OFFICE

In Nevada, the secretary of state, attorney general and a district attorney intervened to swiftly resolve an impasse over a county’s certification of a primary election results.

The Washoe County Board of Commissioners in July voted 3-2 to not certify the results of a June primary election recount, with several commissioners saying there were anomalies that merited further investigation.

Nevada Secretary of State Francisco Aguilar asked the state’s supreme court to force the commissioners to certify, saying their role in the election was purely ministerial and gave them no discretion to hold up results.

The commission reversed course before the case could be decided, with two holdout commissioners changing their votes after being told they could face criminal penalties or be stripped of office if they refused to certify.

Commissioner Mike Clark, a Republican, said during a July 16 hearing that he was changing his vote with “heavy heart” because he was told by the Washoe County prosecutors and Nevada Attorney General’s Office that he was required to certify.

“I have been told that a failure to vote to certify this election could subject me to criminal prosecution and forfeiture of office,” Clark said.

COLORADO: NINE YEARS IN PRISON

In one of the starkest examples, Republican former Mesa County, Colorado, Clerk Tina Peters was sentenced to nine years in prison this month, after being convicted of illegally tampering with voting machines in 2020.

Peters has denied wrongdoing and insisted her actions were intended to help the people of her county.

Judge Matthew Barrett said Peters had abused her position and violated her oath of office.

"You are no hero," Barrett said as he sentenced her. "You're a charlatan who used, and is still using, your prior position in office to peddle a snake oil that's been proven to be junk time and time again."

COMMENTARY:Are Minorities Voting Increasingly Like Normies?

Not everything significant politically is happening just in the target states.

"Never seen anything like this in thirty years,"said California Republican consultant Mike Madrid in an X post, referencingthe sharp increase in Republican registration among California's minority voters, including the state's numerous Latinos, growing numbers of Asians, and decreasing number of Blacks.

This is especially evident among Latinos, as shown by mock elections in the state's majority-Hispanic public schools, in which former PresidentDonald Trump got 18% of voters in 2020 and 35% so far this year.

These changes are not going to make California go Republican on Nov. 5, but they're part of a nationwide Republican trend among so-called minorities that may help Trump carry several target states with large percentages of Hispanics (Arizona and Nevada) and Blacks (Georgia, North Carolina, Michigan and Pennsylvania).

Definitive confirmation of what has been scattered evidence comes from the latest, very highly rated New York Times/Siena poll, which oversampled Hispanics and Blacks. The outlet's chief political analyst, Nate Cohn, reported last weekend that Trump is trailing Vice President Kamala Harris by 78%-15% among Blacks and by only 56%-37% among Hispanics.Trump, Cohn said, "might well return to the White House by faring better among Black and Hispanic voters combined than any Republican presidential nominee since the enactment of the Civil Rights Act in 1964."

This not only alarms but also puzzles many Democrats. Commenters responded in disbelief to Madrid's post.

"I cannot think of 1 single thing that Trump has or will do for Latinos," said Lisa Grande.

"Specifically, why?" asked DebJM. "GOP has no policy that benefits either group. In fact, they stigmatized all those groups mentioned."

Something similar came from as exalted and successful a political analyst as former President Barack Obama.

Speaking in Pittsburgh last Thursday, the former president, who won 365 and 332 electoral votes (of 538) in 2008 and 2012, respectively, upbraided Black voters, especially men.

"Part of it makes me think – and I'm speaking to men directly," he said, "that, well, you just aren't feeling the idea of having a woman as president."

Similar to a jazz artist improvising on a theme, Obama continued, "Women in our lives have been getting our backs this entire time. … And now, you're thinking about sitting out or supporting somebody who has a history of denigrating you because you think that's a sign of strength because that's what being a man is? Putting women down? That's not acceptable."

It's not generally considered good persuasion tactics to accuse voters of bigotry and insist they confess error, but Obama seemed to be appealing to a longtime theme in Black politics. Any reporter who's watched a Democratic candidate speak in Black churches has heard preachers call for unity. The virtual unanimity of Black voters over many years, for Republicans from 1865 to the 1930s, and for Democrats since 1964, is a rational response by voters who are conscious of being part of a discriminated-against minority and who want to maximize their political clout.

Thus, the commenters on Madrid's post are puzzled that Hispanics and Blacks might vote for a Republican Party that, in their view, offers them no policies addressing their specific plight.

They might be less puzzledif they hit their New York Times app andread Cohn's analysis. He points out that nearlyhalf of Hispanic and Black voters support a southern border wall and deportationof illegal immigrants. About half of minorities, like half of whites, say big-city crime is out of control. Majorities of blacks and Hispanics =favor an "America first" foreign policy.

Moreover, under 30% of Blacks and Hispanics rate the economy positively, and61% of Hispanics and 25% of Blacks, for whom the economy is the most important concern, favor Trump. As the Democratic Party becomes dominated by left-wing woke progressives and more liberal white college graduates, attitudes rooted in history that had prompted Blacks and Hispanics to vote near-unanimously or heavily Democratic have been thrust aside.

Near-majoritiesof Hispanics and substantial numbers of Blacks have become, in Ruy Teixeira's, a liberal patriot writer, phrase,"normie voters."Just as in their daily lives,I suspect, they live similarly to normie Americans.

The rigid and often violently imposed regime of segregation and subordination described in anthropologist John Dollard's 1937 "Caste and Class in a Southern Town" has been long gone, and increasingly,though not completely, Black Americans go about working, shopping and enjoying leisure activities without stigma or disrespect.

As for Hispanics, to whom civil rights protections were applied in the 1970s on the assumption that they would be treated similarly to segregation-era Southern Blacks, that assumption was never accurate, and the cessation of Mexican immigration for a decade after the housing and financial crisis of 2007-08 provided time for assimilation.

Let us go back to where this column started: California. I see a historical analogy. Just as the largely midwestern migration there in 1940-65 led to Democratic victories and then, in response to the Watts riot and Berkeley rebellions, the 1966 turn to the conservatism of Ronald Reagan, the largely Mexican migration in 1982-2007 led to Democratic victories, andnow, in response to the Biden inflation, illegal immigration and COVID-19 lockdowns, we're seeing a 2024 movement toward the populism of Trump.

If the Democratic Party has always been a coalition of outgroups,when members of an outgroup start feeling like normies, they may turn to the Republicans, who have always been centered on a core group of people regarded as typical Americans. While this process goes on, we may see the two parties in very close balance.
