California’s New Soft-on-Crime ‘Racial Justice Act’ Set to Release Dangerous Criminals

Heather MacDonald outlined California’s latest descent into racialist madness in the Wall Street Journal. California’s leftist lawmakers passed the Racial Justice Act in 2020 that allows every felon in the Golden State’s prisons and jails to retroactively challenge his conviction and sentencing on the ground of systemic bias. If it can be shown that there is a history of a criminal suspects from the past who were prosecuted or sentenced more harshly than other racial groups, he may be granted a new trial or sentence. Heather points out that Blacks are arrested, prosecuted and convicted more often than members of other races because they commit more crimes.

She wrote: “In Los Angeles, blacks are 21 times as likely as whites to commit a violent crime, 36 times as likely to commit a robbery, and 57 times as likely to commit a homicide, according to police department data. Those data come from reports filed by victims and witnesses, who are themselves disproportionately black.”

Zelensky would lose election – poll

The recently sacked General Zaluzhny is more popular than the current president of Ukraine

Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky would lose office if an election were held right now, according to a poll made public on Tuesday. Zelensky, whose current mandate expires this spring, has cancelled all elections, citing marital law.

A survey carried out by the Ukrainian pollster SOCIS shows Zelensky trailing in the first round and then losing a runoff to the recently sacked General Valery Zaluzhny. The SOCIS survey shows Zaluzhny with 41% of the vote in the first round, and 67.5% in a runoff,while the incumbent would secure only 23.7% initially and no more than 32.5% in the second round. (Zelensky will ban polls because they are under martial law, and try to find out who were surveyed, then they will ramp up propaganda on the people.)

Former President Pyotr Poroshenko would get just 6.4% of the vote in the first round, while the ex-speaker of Ukraine’s parliament, Dmitry Razumov, just 5.6%, the pollster said.

If the parliamentary elections were held today, ahypothetical “Zaluzhny bloc” would gain 46.4% of the seats, and Zelensky’s party just 21.1%, while Poroshenko would max out at 7.5%.

Polls in late 2023 showed Zaluzhny giving Zelensky a challenge. However, the incumbent president was predicted to receive over 47% of the vote in the first round and defeat the general in a runoff.

However, over 65% of the respondents to the latest survey agreed that elections should not be held while the conflict is ongoing. The poll was carried out from February 22 to March 1, on a representative sample of 3,000 adult Ukrainians,with a margin of error of 2.1%.

Before entering politics, Zelensky was a comedian who played Ukraine’s president on a TV show. In 2019, he campaigned on a peace platform and challenged Poroshenko, winning the runoff in a landslide with 73% of the vote. His newly formed party, named after the TV show (Servant of the People) swept the June 2019 parliamentary elections as well.

Last December, Zelensky announced that there would be no elections for either president or parliament as long as martial law remains in force, essentially extending his mandate and that of the parliament indefinitely.

Zaluzhny was the supreme commander of the Armed Forces of Ukraine until February 8, when he was replaced by Russian-born General Aleksandr Syrsky. According to multiple reports in the media, the former had been clashing with Zelensky and showing political ambitions, but Zaluzhny has never made any overt moves to become involved in Ukrainian politics.

German MP calls for attack on government buildings in Moscow

It’s necessary to strike the Russian Ministry of Defense and intelligence service, Roderich Kiesewetter has said

“Ukraine should be given the opportunity to take the war to the Russian territory,” Kiesewetter said on Tuesday, live on the Lanz show on German TV, noting that Defense Minister Boris Pistorius had already called for that in April 2023.

“The only thing I will add from my side is that it is also necessary to attack the Russian Ministry of Defense or the intelligence service,” the MP said. “It is absolutely clear that this is not about civilian targets and not about the people, but about explaining to the Russian population that they are the aggressors,” he added.

When asked by the host of the show whether Kiesewetter thought that the attack on Moscow would be rational, the politician responded that those were Pistorius’ words.

“To attack Moscow with Taurus missiles?” the host asked. “No, Mr Lanz, now you are putting words into my mouth.No, if, within the framework of the agreement, we oblige Ukraine to use missiles only in the occupied territories, then they will act according to this principle,” Kiesewetter argued.

The calls for attack on Russian government buildings come amid the latest diplomatic row between Moscow and Berlin, following the leak of an audio recording in which German military officers discussed a potential attack on the Crimean Bridge.

Stunning images captured by the Very Large Telescope (VLT) in Chile reveal unique insights into planet formation around young stars.

In these portraits, emerging planet systems look more like miniature galaxies rather than disks of debris. The figures showcase clearly defined spiral arms arising from thick dust. Others exhibit less-defined clouds of luminescent matter. For astronomers, these observations present a unique opportunity to study how planets are born. The collection of images, captured by one of the world's most powerful telescopes, is one of the largest of its kind, framing more than 80 young stars and their planet-forming disks.

"This is really a shift in our field of study," Christian Ginski, a lecturer at the University of Galway in Ireland and lead author of three papers detailing the observations, said in a statement. "We've gone from the intense study of individual star systems to this huge overview of entire star-forming regions."

The young stars and their fledgling planets come from three major star-forming regions in the Milky Way galaxy. Some live in either the Taurus or Chameleon I gas clouds, both of which are located some 600 light-years from Earth, and others hail from the somewhat more distant Orion gas cloud about 1,600 light-years away.

The researchers found a wide variety of planet-forming disks that displayed significant differences based on which site they came from. In the Orion cloud, for instance, the astronomers observed groups of two or more stars surrounded only by faint planet-forming disks. Some of the most massive stars in the region had oddly shaped disks, suggesting a presence of very large planets that distort their respective disks with their enormous gravitational pulls.

"Some of these disks show huge spiral arms, presumably driven by the intricate ballet of orbiting planets," Ginski said.

Others in the dataset feature rings and large cavities, most likely carved out by forming planets. Still others are smooth and seemingly inactive.

More than 5,000 exoplanets, planets orbiting other stars than the sun, have been discovered by telescopes in space and on Earth since the 1990s. Some of the uncovered planetary systems look completely different from our solar system, and astronomers are therefore still trying to figure out what factors influence the outcomes of planet-forming alchemy. To observe these processes, however, is a difficult task. Regions where stars form are not only far away, but also usually obscured with dust.

To produce the latest collection of images, the astronomers used the VLT's Spectro-Polarimetric High-contrast Exoplanet Research instrument (SPHERE), which holds a powerful adaptive optics system that can correct for blurring caused by Earth's atmosphere and produce sharper images. The researchers were thus able to image stars only half as massive as the sun, which most other instruments cannot do, according to the statement. Additional observations taken with the VLT's spectrograph X-shooter and the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array provided information about the mass of the stars hosting the imaged planets as well as the amount of surrounding dust.

The researchers hope that, in the future, when the new Extremely Large Telescope comes online in Chile, they will be able to obtain more detailed images, perhaps detecting even small, rocky planets in inner regions of the emerging planetary systems.

Boeing Gets $439M Contract from U.S. Space Force to Build Another Constellation Satellite

Boeing yesterday announced a $439.6 million contract to build the twelfth Wideband Global SATCOM (WGS) communications satellite for U.S. Space Force's Space Systems Command. The WGS constellation delivers high-capacity, secure and resilient communications capabilities to the U.S. military and its allies.

The constellation's responsive and steerable beams provide connectivity via the Protected Tactical Enterprise Service (PTES) ground system and enhanced anti-jam communications by combining the U.S. military's jam-resistant Protected Tactical Waveform with antenna nulling in the Ka band.

Boeing's WGS-12 will offer significant performance improvements due to the use of advanced manufacturing techniques, like additive manufacturing, rapid prototyping and agile development.

The anti-jam capability of Boeing's new Protected Tactical Satcom Prototype payload will also be integrated on WGS-12, providing a second Protected Wideband Satellite to the U.S. military, and expanding anti-jam tactical communications capacity for U.S. warfighters and allies to operate in multiple contested theaters.

According to Michelle Parker, Boeing's VP of Space Mission Systems, WGS-12 will provide the military with more than 1,500 individually steerable, shapeable beams in the Ka band.

Boeing is currently building WGS-11 at its El Segundo, Calif., site.

Zelensky’s wife snubs Biden – WaPo

The Ukrainian first lady has turned down an invitation to Thursday’s State of the Union address, citing a tight schedule

Ukrainian first lady Elena Zelenskaya has declined an invitation to attend US President Joe Biden’s State of the Union address on Thursday, citing a busy schedule. According to the Washington Post, the real reason for her refusal may bebecause a similar offer was extended to Yulia Navalnaya, widow of the late Russian opposition figure Alexey Navalny.

Zelenskaya’s office confirmed on Wednesday that the Ukrainian Embassy had received an offer for her to attend the event in Washington DC.

“However, due to scheduled events… the First Lady, unfortunately, won’t be able to participate,” representatives added. The Washington Post also quoted an unnamed White House official as referring to “schedule conflicts” as the reason behind the decision.

The newspaper, however, cited anonymous sources “familiar with [Kiev’s] deliberations”indicating that Zelenskaya’s non-attendance is due to the invitation to Navalnaya. Ukrainian authorities were reportedly angered by comments her late husband made shortly after Crimea became a Russian region in 2014,when Navalny stated the peninsula was historically Russian. The opposition figure, who died at an Arctic penal colony last month, did denounce Moscow’s military operation against Ukraine in February 2022.

According to the Post, “the intent had been to seat first lady Jill Biden near [Zelenskaya] and Yulia Navalnaya,” with the two women representing a “symbol of resistance to Russian President Vladimir Putin.” The White House had reportedly hoped their presence would serve as a “powerful backdrop to President Biden’s address.”

A representative for Navalnaya, however, said she will not be attending the event either.

“Yulia’s husband died two weeks ago. She’s been traveling all this time. Today is the first day she’s been home at all. Like any human being, she needs time to recover,” Kira Yarmysh told the Post.

The newspaper quoted other anonymous officials as suggesting that Zelenskaya’s refusal to appear may also have been motivated by a desire not to antagonize US Republicans, with her presencepotentially being interpreted as a sign that Kiev is closely allied with Biden and the Democrats.

The Post suggested that the Ukrainian leadership is anxious to curry favor with the GOP in the hope that Republicans in Congress will eventually unblock Biden’s latest foreign aid package, which has earmarked $60 billion for Kiev. (Never gonna happen)

Satellite connectivity backups put to use over Red Sea

Satellite operators are being called in to help keep Europe and Asia connected after subsea internet cables in the Red Sea were severed last week.

Four of around 15 submarine cables in the Red Sea have been affected, according to Hong Kong-based cable operator HGC Global Communications, which is helping reroute affected traffic.

Two of these come together at the area of the cut, the Washington Post reported citing a subsea cable expert at research company TeleGeography, meaning just three cables have been severed.

Still, HGC said in a March 4 update that about a quarter of the traffic passing between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East has been disrupted.

The Yemen-based and Iranian-backed Houthi movement that has been attacking ships in the Red Sea has denied responsibility for the incident, CNN reported, and has blamed British and US military units operating in the area.

A Seacom executive told CNN it could take up to eight weeks to repair the cables, pending permits from Yemen’s maritime authority.

In the meantime, subsea cable operators are rerouting internet traffic between the continents, sometimes via less direct routes.

“There are reports for example in East Africa of the internet slowing down fairly significantly,” said Rhys Morgan, a regional vice president for media and networks sales at satellite fleet operator Intelsat.

Slower internet connections have a financial impact on companies with mission-critical data, Morgan said, while governments and other internet users with sensitive data face having it rerouted via less secure countries.

Intelsat and other operators with satellites overhead can offer customers a space-based route for sending internet traffic from point A to point B.

Morgan told SpaceNews March 5 that Intelsat satellites are providing backup connectivity for a couple of customers that were sending data via subsea cable before the Red Sea incident.

While it remains unclear how the cables were severed, he said the connectivity issues highlight a growing need for hybrid subsea cable and satellite networks.

The increasing geopolitical importance of the Svalbard archipelago in the Arctic Ocean, and growing tensions in the region, prompted media speculation that Russia might have been behind a subsea cable failure in early 2022, although no evidence has emerged to suggest this.

Morgan said connectivity-related incidents are generally getting “more malicious than they’ve been and there’s definitely an uptick in those.” There are also “discussions around submarines sitting near cables, intercepting traffic.”

According to Morgan, subsea cable users with antennas and other equipment already in place to tap into a satellite network backup can get communications restored within 15 minutes.

“If it’s a very large and sophisticated service and there’s a lot of terrestrial work needed then it could take a fair bit longer,” he added, “hours or possibly days.”

Satellite networks can also help restore communications relatively quickly after a natural disaster knocks out terrestrial infrastructure.

Intelsat and SES said their satellites restored connectivity within days after a January 2022 volcanic eruption damaged international and domestic telecoms cables connecting Tonga in the South Pacific.

Actor Drake Bell Says He Was Sexually Abused at Age 15 By Nickelodeon Dialogue Coach

In a new documentary series, Drake Bell, a former child star actor, disclosed that he was a victim of sexual abuse by his ex-Nickelodeon dialogue coach, Brian Peck.

Bell made his claims during a new documentary series by Investigation Discovery titled “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV,” which is set to be released on March 17th.

Investigation Discovery, in a press release, wrote, “Former Nickelodeon star Drake Bell will be sharing publicly, for the first time, the story of the abuse he suffered at the hands of Brian Peck, his former dialogue coach who was convicted in 2004 for his crimes against Drake and ordered to register as a sex offender.”

Business Insider reported Peck was arrested in 2003 on 11 allegations that he sexually abused an unnamed child.

Peck, in 2004, pleaded no contest “to performing a lewd act with a 14- or 15-year-old and to oral copulation with a minor under 16” and was sentenced to 16 months in prison and ordered to register as a sex offender.

Drake Bell is coming forward about the abuse he allegedly endured that led to the conviction of his dialogue coach, Brian Peck, who is a registered sex offender.

On Tuesday, Investigation Discovery shared a teaser of its upcoming docuseries “Quiet on Set: The Dark Side of Kids TV.” The series aims to uncover “the toxic and dangerous culture behind some of the most iconic children’s shows of the late 1990s and early 2000s” on Nickelodeon under former producer Dan Schneider, according to a release.

Bell takes a seat in the interview chair at the end of the brief clip. According to the release, this is the “Drake and Josh” star’s first time identifying himself as the victim of Peck’s alleged abuse that led to his conviction in 2004.

Peck was arrested in August 2003 on a charge of lewd acts with a child, according to a press release from the Los Angeles Police Department. The arrest stemmed from a 2001 incident in which the actor allegedly molested a child he was coaching over a six-month period.

As Egypt Implements Massive Devaluation Of Currency, Sending Pound Tumbling, Unrest & Instability On Horizon

The Egyptian pound crashed Wednesday as the government initiated a devaluation of more than 38%, while also hiking interest rates, in order to attract billions more in loans from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).

Already with one of the world's highest levels of foreign debt, Egypt is trying to avoid potential default in the coming years, and has been propped up by loans and central bank deposits from Persian Gulf states and the IMF. Like other governments in the region, particularly Lebanon, Egypt has long had a severe shortage of foreign-currency reserves, resulting in the Central Bank of Egypt artificially propping up the pound's value, leading to a robust black market exchange.

The central bank announced Wednesday, "The unification of the exchange rate is crucial, as it facilitates the elimination of foreign-exchange backlogs following the closure of the spread between the official and the parallel exchange-rate markets." It will allow "the exchange rate to be determined by market forces."

China outlines position on use of space resources

China holds a seemingly positive stance towards the use of space resources, according to a recent submission made by a Chinese delegation to the United Nations.

The delegation appears to state that China considers space resource utilization as permissible, but must be conducted in accordance with the Outer Space Treaty (OST) of 1967.

China’s submission treats the use of space resources as legal, but also calls for adherence to the existing frameworks of international space law, with the OST as the cornerstone.

The document was submitted to the Working Group on Legal Aspects of Space Resource Activities of the Legal Subcommittee of the Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS).

COPUOS is a body of the United Nations tasked with governing the exploration and use of space for the benefit of all humanity, overseeing matters related to space science and technology and their applications. The Working Group plays a critical role in addressing the legal challenges posed by the utilization of space resources, helping to shape the international legal framework that will govern these activities.

The submission could be seen as a beneficial development, helping to set the stage for a dialogue on the legal frameworks for governing the use of space resources.

“This engagement by China on the international discussion on space resources is a positive development,” Christopher Johnson, director of legal affairs and space law for the Secure World Foundation, told SpaceNews. “It tells us that China is taking international fora like COPUOS seriously, and seems to be engaging in good faith with the fora and with the process.

“Additionally, it’s welcome to have a clear statement of Chinese positions on these issues, and this informs other States in their approach and preparations to the international discussions going on at the UN.”

Johnson interprets the Chinese stance as seemingly largely aligned with the broader international consensus on the use of space resources. That is, the right to possess and use space resources is not only desirable by space agencies and national governments, but is also permissible under the current international law.

Discussion and consideration of the use and legality utilizing space resources has grown in recent years due to advancements in the space sector, the rise of commercial companies and renewed interest in the moon.

Assassination Attempt On Zelensky? Russian Missile Strikes Near President's Motorcade While In Odesa

Ukraine's key southern port city of Odesa has been coming under increased Russian drone and rocket attack of late, resulting in fears that Moscow could possibly be eyeing its takeover next.

It is perhaps for this reason that President Volodymyr Zelensky made a visit Wednesday to the Black Sea hub. In a bit of risky move, the Ukrainian leader also brought along Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis for the official visit. Russia reportedly sent missiles or drones against the city at the very moment of their visit.

Zelensky and Mitsotakis said explosions rang out while they toured Odesa. "We heard the sound of sirens and explosions that took place near us. We did not have time to get to a shelter," Mitsotakis told reporters. There are emerging reports and allegations that this was a targeted assassination attempt.

"It is a very intense experience… It’s really different to read about the war in newspapers, and to hear it with your own ears, see it with your own eyes," Mitsotakis said of the strikes that reportedly hit close.

Zelensky in turn said before a press conference that he's heard initial reports of "dead and wounded" from Wednesday's fresh Russian strike on Odesa. "You can see who we are facing. They don’t care where they strike," he told reporters.

Some online pundits are going so far as to call it an 'assassination attempt' targeting Zelensky, given some reports say at least one of the strikes hit very near where the pair were visiting. According to Politico:

And The Washington Post has bluntly stated, "A Russian missile strike appeared to target Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday, landing near his motorcade in the Black Sea port city of Odessa, where the president was meeting with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.

While it could be that they are playing it up for drama and sympathy, PM Mitsotakis appaered to confirm that the explosion was close. "Shortly afterwards, as we were getting into our cars, we heard a big explosion," he said. Greek officials told the Protothema news out that a missile landed and exploded merely about 500 feet away.

"This is one more reason why all European leaders should come to Ukraine. Because it is one thing to hear the description from the media or from President Zelenskyy and it is quite another to experience the war first-hand," he continued.

Drastic welfare cut expected for Ukrainians living in EU state – media

Ireland’s current level of support is “not sustainable,” Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has reportedly warned

Ukrainian refugees living in subsidized housing in Ireland may soon see their welfare benefits slashed, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys has warned, according to local media. The current arrangement is “not sustainable in the long run,” according to the minister.

The government already has a plan in motion to cut welfare fornew arrivals, under which weekly allowances will be reduced from the current €220 ($239) to €38.80 ($42), while housing will now be provided for 90 days rather than indefinitely.

Some 100,000 Ukrainians already in receipt of welfare benefits in Ireland will not be affected – at least for now. When Humphreys explained the policy change to TDs (members of the Irish parliament) in January, she said similar changes “down the road” could affect “anybody in state-provided accommodation, regardless of what date they arrived.” The new rules were expected to come into force by the end of January, but have yet to be signed into law.

Humphreys’ new remarks, which were reported by the Irish Independent on Wednesday, are the strongest yet made by the minister on the matter, the newspaper noted.

Ukrainians who arrived in Ireland in the first waves of 2022 “genuinely had nothing” and needed higher protection, she explained, but “things have changed slightly since then.”

A poll by the charity Ukrainian Action in Ireland showed this week that53% of Ukrainians living in the republic under temporary protection want to stay long-term, up from around 40% last year.

According to the survey,over 40% of such people are employed, but just 9% of them are working within their profession, despite having a generally high level of education and work experience. The group has blamed the language barrier and the fact that many of them are city dwellers who were settled in rural areas.
