In Bump Stock Arguments, Constitution-Hating Justices Prove They Have No Idea How Guns Work

Ketanji Brown Jackson and Elena Kagan repeatedly insisted bump stock-equipped guns can fire up to 800 rounds a second. That’s false.

The U.S. Supreme Court convened on Wednesday for oral arguments about whether the federal government was right to ban bump stocks on claims the assistive casing transforms semiautomatic rifles into machine guns.

The justices normally would use their questioning time to evaluate whether bump stocks qualify as “any weapon which shoots, is designed to shoot, or can be readily restored to shoot, automatically more than one shot, without manual reloading, by a single function of the trigger,” as defined in the 1934 National Firearms Act and Gun Control Act, which prohibits any device that results “in converting a weapon into a machinegun.”

Instead, oral arguments for Garland v. Cargill quickly devolved into confusing hypotheticals and debates that stemmed from justices’ incredibly limited understanding of how guns work.

Bump Stock Basics

Automatic weapons like machine guns are prohibited under U.S. law as dangerous and unusual because, with one trigger function, they can discharge hundreds of rounds per minute. Bump stocks, a simple casing added to the stock of a gun, merely aid shooters — especially those with disabilities — with trigger dexterity. The modifiers often do help shooters attain a faster rate of fire, but still require multiple trigger functions to achieve multiple shots.

The key differences between automatic and semiautomatic weapons with bump stocks were largely lost on the justices, especially Ketanji Brown Jackson and Elena Kagan, who repeatedly insisted bump stock-equipped guns can fire up to 800 rounds a second. They, along with the government’s legal team, repeated the lie that semiautomatic rifles with modifiers could fire hundreds of shots (in Kagan’s words, “a torrent of bullets”) each moment.Cargill lawyer Johnathan Mitchell corrected them multiple times.

“Why would even a person with arthritis think theyneeded to shoot 400 to seven or 800 rounds of ammunitionunder any circumstance if you don’t let a person without arthritis do that?” Kagan asked.

“They don’t shoot 400 to 700 rounds because the magazine only goes up to 50,” Mitchell explained, noting “rapid fire is not the test under the statute.” “So you’re still going to have to change the magazine after every round.”

Mitchell also repeatedly called out Jackson’s false assertion that firing a gun with a bump stock only requires one trigger movement.

“It’s factually incorrect to say that a function to the trigger automatically starts some chain reaction that propels multiple bullets from the gun. A function of the trigger fires one shot, then the shooter must take additional manual action,” Mitchell said….

Okay, so it was more of a maybe, but former President Donald Trump did say he is "likely" to launch sweeping reforms of America's intelligence apparatus if reelected as president this November.

U.S. intelligence agencies like the Central Intelligence Agency(CIA) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) could be on the chopping block if Americans reelect Trump to the White House this fall, which is prompting many of them to express fresh fears about what this might mean for their continuity.

According to Politico, which recently interviewed 18 intelligence officials about the matter, Trump's sort-of-promise to gut the intelligence establishment of all traitors could "undermine the credibility of American intelligence."

"Trump intends to go after the intelligence community," one former senior intelligence official complained. "He started that process before and he's going to do it again. Part of that process is to root out people and to punish people."

All intelligence workers who are "perceived as hostile to [Trump's] political agenda" are to be replaced with "inexperienced loyalists," is how Politico summarized the sentiments of the spooks it interviewed about the matter.

Two people specifically named as likely Trump targets are former acting Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Richard Grenell and aide Kash Patel, both of whom played a key role in declassifying information about the true origins of "Russiagate."

Lloyd Austin Says Israel Has Killed Over 25,000 Women and Children in Gaza

He also said the US has provided 21,000 munitions to support the slaughter since October 7

Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin said on Thursday that Israel has killed over 25,000 Palestinian women and children in Gaza since October 7.

When asked how many women and children have been killed during a House Armed Services Committee, Austin replied, “It’s over 25,000.”

The number is higher than the estimate that’s been put out by Gaza’s Health Ministry. The ministry said on Thursday that over 30,000 have been killed so far and has consistently said about 70% of the casualties are women and children, which puts the women and child death toll around 21,000.

Gaza’s Health Ministry does not account for the thousands of civilians who are missing and presumed to be dead under the rubble or for Palestinians who may have been buried instead of being sent to a hospital or morgue. The breakdown of communications in the Gaza Strip has also impeded the Health Ministry’s ability to keep a count.

In October, President Biden accused the Palestinians of lying about the death toll when confronted about civilian casualties. “I have no notion that the Palestinians are telling the truth about how many people are killed,” Biden said.

But a few weeks later, Barbara Leaf, assistant secretary of State for Near Eastern Affairs, acknowledged Gaza’s Health Ministry has always been reliable and said the true death toll is likely higher than what they’re reporting. Israeli media reports have also said that Israeli military officials believe the Health Ministry’s numbers are close to accurate.

Austin also said the US had provided Israel with 21,000 munitions since October 7 to support the massacre, which does not include the American-provided bombs Israel was already armed with, as it receives $3.8 billion in military aid from the US each year.

Despite the massive civilian casualty rate and the International Court of Justice ruling that it’s “plausible” Israel is committing genocide in Gaza, the US continues to provide unconditional military support and political cover.

A sad consequence of polarization over issues like abortion, same-sex marriage and transgenderism is that religious freedom—our first and most cherished liberty—has wrongly come to be seen by many in the United States as a partisan cause.

To be sure, threats from the left to people who hold traditional beliefs on those issues are many, real and severe.

But the Catholic Church is not a faction of the Republican Party, and Democrats are not the only ones who sometimes view the defense of religious freedom as a pothole instead of a stop sign.

Here in the Archdiocese of New York, the church can claim a special history of service to immigrants.

It was here at the turn of the 20th century that St. Frances Cabrini, the patron saint of immigrants, helped our city’s rapidly growing Italian community navigate their new lives.

Carrying on her legacy, our Catholic Charities ministries today still care for unaccompanied children and other newcomers who have come here, many fleeing violence, persecution and abject poverty.

The Catholic belief that immigrants must be met with compassion and care has deep roots in the Bible. It is part of the same life ethic that requires us to protect unborn children.

We cannot offer a full witness to the sanctity of life if we fail to respect life in the womb, and the same is true of the human dignity of immigrants and other people in need.

These commitments are inseparable.

And yet, now a few elected officials on Capitol Hill and in state legislatures are pushing legislation to stop any aid to, or government partnership with, churches and agencies like our own Catholic Charities,

and are waging slanderous attacks against us for assisting newcomers, including refugees and asylum seekers.

Take the Secure the Border Act, which the U.S. House of Representatives recently passed. It would cut off funds that charities use to shelter immigrants and help them through our legal system.

This may seem merely cruel rather than a religious freedom issue, until you see the special vitriol that some of the bill’s backers have directed at Catholic agencies engaged in this work.

When we say that the government must respect religious freedom, both parties need to listen. It is not a right to be observed only when it is convenient.

At least one member of the House seems to think the law already makes it a crime to give an undocumented immigrant a hot meal or a place to sleep, and he wrote a bill to deny all federal funds to any charity that does not comply.

Criminalizing the exercise of religion, or denying public resources to someone because they exercised their faith—now that would be a square violation of religious freedom.

Thoughtful people can and do criticize our flawed border policies.

I sure do. But we people of faith—Jews, Christians, Muslims and others—also realize that we have a moral duty to welcome, clothe, feed and respect newcomers, no matter how they got here.

And here in the United States, the government can’t punish us for that belief.

The faithful in other nations who suffer religious persecution far more than we do here—those in Nicaragua, China, Cuba and Nigeria, just to name a few—urge us to show fortitude

in our defense of religious freedom, as they depend upon the example of America’s birthright of this liberty to stay strong in their plight.

So when we say that the government must respect religious freedom, both parties need to listen. It is not a right to be observed only when it is convenient and to be run over when it gets in the way.

It is foundational and indispensable to our society.

European officials are no more hiding the presence of their special forces in Ukraine.

A senior European defense official told the Financial Times that there are “Western special forces” in Ukraine, which are not officially reported. “Everyone knows that there are Western special forces in Ukraine — they just didn’t officially recognize it,” the source told the FT.

The stakes are rising and the hypocrisy of Kiev and its Western patrons is being exposed. ICE Arrests 275 Illegal Alien Sex Convicts

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials arrested nearly 300 illegal alien convicted sex predators off of America’s streets this month in a widespread operation.

ICE’s Enforcement and Removal Operations (ERO) said that it was making use of the limited resources that Congress has given it by going after the most dangerous illegal aliens in the U.S.

The agency highlighted some of the arrests that it made during the operation, which ran from February 5-16:

A 26-year-old citizen of El Salvador in Houston, Texas, convicted of felony aggravated sexual assault with a firearm.

A 44-year-old citizen of Cuba in Tampa, Florida, convicted of felony traveling to meet a minor after using computer services or devices to solicit certain illegal acts and unlawful use of two-way communications device.

A 71-year-old citizen of Mexico in Pittsburg, California, convicted of felony continuous sexual abuse of a child.

A 58-year-old citizen of El Salvador in Gaithersburg, Maryland, convicted of felony sodomy first degree and felony sex abuse first degree.

A 25-year-old citizen of Mexico in Denver, Colorado, convicted of felony child prostitution – soliciting.

A 34-year-old citizen of El Salvador in Memphis, Tennessee, convicted of felony sexual exploitation of minor – exhibition of minor.

A 45-year-old citizen of Nigeria in Providence, Rhode Island, convicted of felony indecent solicitation of a child.

The alleged crimes are just the latest examples of high-profile offenses involving illegal aliens since President Joe Biden took office. French President Emmanuel Macron's words at the start of the week which opened the door to European 'boots on the ground in Ukraine' elicited shock, dismay and caution even from within the Western allies. NATO itself scrambled to assure the world that it has no plans to deploy troops inside Ukraine, with Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg rejecting the idea in remarks, given it would certainly mean automatic WW3.

According to CNN, "Macron had told reporters at a news conference that while he and the other 21 European leaders present did not agree on deploying military personnel, the prospect was discussed openly." Even typically hawkish countries Poland and the UK distanced themselves from such a possibility.

However one tiny NATO country did step up to back Macron's words. The Netherlands has said it won't rule out sending Western troops to Ukraine. Dutch Chief of Defense, General Onno Eichelsheim, told an Amsterdam-based news outlet that while it's a possibility it is "not yet opportune" to do so."I think you should keep all options open to see how you can best support Ukraine," Eichelsheim said.

According to more from the Dutch interview:

Ukraine has not asked the Netherlands to send troops and there is no point in discussing it at the moment, Eichelsheim added. If Western militaries were to go to Ukraine, it would have to be in a coalition, the Dutch military chef said. "This could either happen via NATO or via an alliance of 10-15 countries." "It would be very odd if one or two countries did it," he added.

Indeed, President Putin's ominous response to Macron's words seized precisely on the question of NATO Article 5…

"If Ukraine joins NATO, you won’t even have time to blink your eye when you execute Article 5," Putin said, which suggests that possibly a nuclear response could be on the table.

Moscow has since warned of major direct conflict with the West. According to more from the Kremlin response: "The very fact of discussing the possibility of sending certain contingents to Ukraine from Nato countries is a very important new element…in that case, we would need to talk not about the probability, but about the inevitability (of a direct conflict)."

Already there's clear evidence of a significant amount of Western mercenaries and foreign fighters among Ukraine's ranks:

Some countries, including France, the US, and UK have also in the past made statements which seem to confirm that they already have military 'advisers' on the ground in Ukraine. Certainly Western intelligence services have been there for years, even for the past decade at least.

"Who Could Be Next": Top Canadian Pension Fund Sells Manhattan Office Tower For $1, Sparking Firesale Panic

New York during the inflationary surge of the late 70s and early 80s was a mythical place where one could purchase a Park avenue penthouse for $1 (while assuming the copious debt, of course). Now, thanks to the brutal bear hug of the highest interest rates in 40 years and the ongoing CRE crisis, those legendary days have made a comeback to the Big Apple, if only in the realm of commercial real estate for now.

According to Bloomberg, Canadian pension funds - which until recently had been among the world’s most prolific buyers of real estate, starting a revolution that inspired retirement plans around the globe to emulate them because, in the immortal words of Ben Bernanke, Canadian real estate prices never go down are finally realizing that gravity does exist . And so, the largest one among them is taking steps to limit its exposure to the most-beleaguered commercial property type — office buildings.

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board has recently done three deals at deeply discounted prices, selling its interests in a pair of Vancouver towers, and a business park in Southern California, but it was its Manhattan office tower redevelopment project that shocked the industry: the Canadian asset manager sold its stake for just $1. The worry now is that such firesales will set an example for other major investors seeking a way out of the turmoil too, forcing a wholesale crash in the Manhattan real estate market which until now had managed to avoid real price discovery.

Indeed, as Goldman wrote earlier this week, while office vacancy rates are expected to keep rising well into the next decade the average price of many nonviable offices has fallen only 11% to $307/sqft since 2019 (left side of Exhibit 6). The bank goes on to note that in the hardest-hit cities, as many as 14-16% of offices may no longer be viable, and their average transaction prices have already declined by 15-35%. However, because of lack of liquidity in this market, these recent transaction prices have not yet started to reflect the current values of many existing offices. Goldman ominously concludes that "alternative valuation methods, like those that are based on repeat-sales and appraisal values, suggest that actual office values may be far lower than the average transaction price." Well, a $1 dollar price would certainly confirm that actual office values are far, far lower. And going back to the historic firesale, at the end of last year the Canadian fund sold its 29% stake in Manhattan’s 360 Park Avenue South for $1 to one of its partners, Boston Properties, which also agreed to assume CPPIB’s share of the project’s debt. The investors, along with Singapore sovereign wealth fund GIC Pte., bought the 20-story building in 2021 with plans to redevelop it into a modern workspace.

“It’s the opposite of a vote of confidence for office,” said John Kim, an analyst tracking real estate companies for BMO Capital Markets. “My question is, who could be next?”

As office building anxiety has swept the financial world, as the persistence of both remote work and higher borrowing costs undercuts the economic fundamentals that made the properties good investments in the first place, a wave of banks from New York to Tokyo recently conceded that loans they made against offices may never be fully repaid, sending their share prices plunging and prompting fears of a broader credit crunch.

But the real test will be what price office buildings actually trade for - especially once the hundreds of billions of loan backing the properties mature and until now there have been precious few examples since interest rates started rising. That’s why industry-watchers see such shocking liquidations like CPPIB’s as a very ominous sign for the market.
