Three key drivers for the Ukraine war in 2024

Supplies, information and political will could determine whether the bruising conflict enters a fourth or ends in its third year

In retrospect, there was perhaps nothing surprising about Russia’s decision to invade Ukraine on February 24, 2022. Vladimir Putin’s intentions were, after all, hiding in plain sight and signaled in the months running up to the incursion.

What could not be foreseen, however, is where the conflict finds itself now. Heading into its third year, the war has become bogged down: Neither is it a stalemate nor does it look like either side could make dramatic advances any time soon.

Russia appears to be on the ascendancy, having secured the latest major battlefield victory, but Ukrainian fighters have exceeded military expectations with their doggedness in the past and may do so again.

But as a foreign policy expert and former journalist who spent many years covering Russia, I share the view of those who argue that the conflict is potentially at a pivotal point: If Washington does not continue to fully support President Volodymyr Zelensky and his military, then Ukraine’s very survival could be at risk. I believe it would also jeopardize America’s leadership in the world and global security.

How the conflict develops during the rest of 2024 will depend on many factors, but three may be key: supplies, information and political will.

_The supplies race_

Russia and Ukraine are locked in a race to resupply their war resources – not just in terms of soldiers but also ammunition and missiles. Both sides are desperately trying to shore up the number of soldiers it can deploy.

In December 2023, Putin ordered his generals to increase troop numbers by nearly 170,000, taking the total number of soldiers to 1.32 million. Meanwhile, Ukraine is said to be looking at plans to increase its military by 500,000 troops.

Of course, here, Russia has the advantage of being able to draw on a population more than three times that of Ukraine. Also, whereas Putin can simply order up more troops, Zelensky must get measures approved through parliament.

Aside from personnel, there is also the need for a steady supply of weapons and ammunition – and there have been reports that both sides are struggling to maintain sufficient levels.

Russia appears particularly eager to boost its number of ballistic missiles, as they are better equipped for countering Ukraine air defense systems despite being slower than cruise missiles.

Solomon Islands, Nauru and Papua New Guinea all coming under China’s sway while US fails to allocate funds for key Pacific partners

I started life as a fan of a hapless baseball team called the Washington Senators, so I recognize losing when I see it. There’s plenty of losing going on in the Pacific as the Chinese seek to undercut the American and Australian positions.

Lose the Pacific and it almost doesn’t matter what weapons you give to Taiwan or how you reinforce the so-called First Island Chain running from Japan via Taiwan and the Philippines to Borneo. The Chinese are running rings around the US, Australia, and everyone else in the Pacific.

In the latest setback, Papua New Guinea reportedly is talking to China about an agreement that will allow for People’s Republic of China (PRC) police to provide training and surveillance equipment to the PNG police force.

The Americans and the Australians might have thought we were best friends forever with PNG. But this shouldn’t be a surprise – even after the Americans signed a comprehensive security deal with PNG last summer and the Australians signed a more recent agreement with PNG regarding policing and security. Supposedly Australia would be PNG’s ‘partner of choice’ when it needed help.

When the Americans signed the deal it was a good thing by and large and offered benefits to both countries – especially on the security front between each nation’s military. But one wondered whether the Americans anticipated the Chinese political warfare counter-attack that one knew was coming.

As news of the deal came out, citizen groups started to challenge it. No surprise. The Chinese are always on the ground in PNG and in the Pacific – always influencing and pushing – and at all levels and parts of society.

It’s all greased with money – much if not most of it under the table, of course – but a lot of the financial influence derives from the Chinese commercial presence in all these Pacific nations, right down to the corner shop level. The American and Australian commercial presences? There is some, but it doesn’t match up so well against the Chinese.

In fact, the president or head of a Chinese logging or fishing outfit in Papua New Guinea (or any other Pacific nation) probably has more real influence on the ground than the four-star Admiral commanding the US Indo-Pacific Command.

For now, China won’t mind if the Australians and the Americans are still around in PNG or elsewhere in the region. It gives them a chance to watch and learn their behaviors. And they don’t mind if they have signed agreements.

An agreement is just a piece of paper (as PRC officials will tell you) and can be renounced or ignored anytime. The PRC just needs its foot in the door and it will go from there for as long as it takes.

Unfortunately, the Americans (and the Australians) really don’t understand (or even care about) political warfare, which is a mystery – if not an expletive – in Washington and Canberra. China is glad to have it that way.

Political warfare refers to a nation using every element of national power short of outright armed conflict to get its way. This includes economic, financial, commercial, proxy (getting locals to push for your interests), propaganda, psychological, legal and cyber warfare, among others…

Investment guru Kevin O'Leary was sharply critical Monday on "Mornings with Maria" over the potential seizure of former President Trump's assets should he fail to pay the nine-figure fine in his civil fraud case, calling it akin to a situation in places like Venezuela.

The 2024 Republican frontrunner is currently on the hook for just over $354 million, with post-judgment interest accruing at nearly $112,000 per day. New York Attorney General Letitia James has vowed that if Trump fails to pay, the state will start seizing his assets.

As a businessman, investor and O'Leary Ventures Chairman, O'Leary said the move by the New York court has developers asking whether the fine penalty interest is commensurate with the act.

New York Judge Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump and the defendants were liable for "persistent and repeated fraud," "falsifying business records," "issuing false financial statements," "conspiracy to falsify false financial statements," "insurance fraud," and "conspiracy to commit insurance fraud." Trump's legal team has appealed the ruling.

In the meantime, while the case is being litigated, O'Leary said investors are not putting any new money into projects in New York, adding he is "very concerned" about the next step of seizing assets.

"Capital comes to America because of the stability of the justice system," he said. "This is not stable, in terms of many people’s eyes, domestically and internationally, seizing assets happens in Venezuela, it doesn’t happen in New York. So this is a little scary."

While this is going on, he said it is going to affect New York's success as the top state for industries like hydropower, commercial real estate and AI data and will instead lead to a "quiet exodus of capital leaving New York."

US Army calls Russia ‘the enemy’.

A manual meant to prepare the American military for fighting Russia has been released

The US Army has branded Moscow the “enemy” while promoting a newly-published manual on the Russian military on social media.

The Combined Arms Doctrine Directorate’s (CADD) new 280-page manual gives a detailed overview of Russian military strategy and tactics, and tries to predict how the country would conduct itself in future conflicts. The CADD promoted the manual in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, asking, “Do you know your enemy?” (Yes we do, our own military provoking useless wars)

The primary focus is on Moscow’s ground forces, which would be pitted against the US Army in a hypothetical direct war.

The document, known as ATP 7-100.1 and released last week, is part of a series that the US Army Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) has been developing for years. Previous publications provided similar studies of the militaries of other potential near-peer and peer opponents: North Korea, China, and Iran. The materials are not classified and intended for professional US and allied military officers.

With Russia currently involved in the Ukraine conflict, US military researchers stressed that they are still examining data gathered there and would revise their instructions accordingly. They said it was “too early to assess the structure and equipping of any Russian unit for the next 5 to 10 years” with hostilities still ongoing.

Discussing Russia’s relations with the US and its NATO allies, the manual says they are defined “by a perpetual state of competition and self interest.” The country seeks recognition as a world power and it is “highly likely” that future Russian leaders will pursue policies similar to that of the current government “for the foreseeable future,” it said;Russia will “challenge the relative position of US influence in the global orderwhile avoiding direct confrontation with the US military.”

The Russian leadership views NATO as an instrument of American geopolitical hegemony and has called its expansion in Europe a threat to national security.The Ukraine conflict, according to Moscow, is part of a wider US-led proxy war against Russia, in which Ukrainian troops are sacrificed in the name of containment.

”The core of the problem is not in Ukraine but in those who are trying to destroy Russia with Ukrainian hands,” President Vladimir Putin said last month while visiting a military hospital. “Even though they have been pursuing this goal of tackling Russia for ages, we will sooner tackle them.”

The media has pushed to publicly identify the clients and asked a court to release the names. However, the attorneys for the elite are downplaying their clients' standing and pushing the court to keep their names secret.

The Attorney General's office said that 'granting access to the complaint applications before the show-cause hearings take place would essentially allow unfettered review, use, and potentially publication of the complainant’s allegations before the accused has had the opportunity to respond and before the Clerk-Magistrate has made a probable-cause determination.'

The group of alleged sex-buyers have claimed they have a right to privacy ahead of the sex trafficking trial, which has recently stalled. It is unclear when the alleged clients will be taken to court. The first 13 out of the 17 clients who filed an opposition to the release of names have argued they should remain anonymous, along with the hearings.

Attorneys have also argued the John Doe's are not 'powerful and elite,' and are instead private citizens who could risk detrimental consequences 'if their name and image are published before they have the opportunity to face this case at a clerk’s hearing or in a court of law.'

A footnote in the legal fillings revealed one of the John Doe's 'is an attorney who does not work for the government, one is a doctor working at a public hospital, one is a scientist without ties to the government.'

The brothels were raided in November and prosecutors said they were looking to charge 28 people in Massachusetts alone. It is not clear which country was behind the scheme as Russia, China, Korea itself, or even Israel are all seen as possibilities.Joshua Levy, the Acting U.S. Attorney for Massachusetts, has said his office will seek 'accountability for the buyers who fuel the commercial sex industry.'

There was no evident motive to establish two cathouses in the greater Washington area, sources noted emphatically. None of the three defendants live anywhere near the capital and sex workers were flown in from Los Angeles or Las Vegas. The scheduled hearing in January was halted after JSC Justice Frank M. None of the three suspects have known prior criminal records. The biggest mark against any of them is that James Lee received more than $500,000 in potentially fraudulent Covid relief funds. Their clean records are especially surprising because prosecutors allege at least some of the sex workers were trafficked, which would mean an organized crime group almost certainly played a role.

Ukrainian imports costing EU farmers billions – official

The influx of cheap produce has destabilized markets in the bloc

The EU’s agricultural sector lost €19 billion ($20.6 billion) in 2022 and 2023 as a result of a liberalization of trade with Ukraine, European Agriculture Commissioner Janusz Wojciechowski announced on Monday.

Members of the bloc lifted tariffs and quotas in 2022 for Ukrainian agricultural produce in order to enable foodstuffs, mainly grain, to be shipped onward to global markets. However, much of the supply has ended up getting stuck in Eastern European countries, which has endangered the livelihoods of local farmers.

Speaking at an EU agriculture ministers meeting in Brussels, Wojciechowski cited statistics showing the overall trade balance between Ukraine and the bloc having been positive over the past two years, bringing the EU economy €19 billion in revenues. Overall exports from the EU to Ukraine totaled €69 billion, while imports to the bloc amounted to €50 billion.

However, in the agricultural sector the glut of cheap Ukrainian produce has left EU farmers struggling against what they view as unfair competition. According to the minister, in 2022-2023, the bloc lost billions due to the influx of imports from Ukraine.

“Export is about €6 billion during two years, import [was worth] €25 billion, which means €19 billion minus,” Wojciechowski told reporters after the meeting, which took place amid angry protests by farmers across the EU.

He noted that Ukrainian exports were initially intended to be shipped onward to Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, and urged for steps to be taken to divert the flows to these markets.

Tensions among EU agriculture producers reignited last September when Brussels declined to extend the restrictions. Poland defied the decision and kept its ban on Ukrainian grain imports, but allowed transits of goods through the country.The protesting farmers say that shipments are still being diverted to local markets. Because Ukrainian producers don’t have to abide by EU rules, their products are cheaper, the protesters have argued.

The inflow destabilized markets in Eastern Europe, prompting several EU members, including Poland, to ban imports from the neighboring country.

Ukraine is getting desperate.

The long-touted and long-delayed counteroffensive has made meager gains and failed to break through Russia’s reinforced defensive line at large scale. Meanwhile, Ukraine is increasingly reliant on the West not only to keep the war effort going, but to keep the entire government afloat. As more American policy makers consider further aid to Ukraine,the Ukrainian government is outright threatening American citizens who dare suggest the United States shouldn’t be involved in a proxy war with Russia. While Congress is squabbling over whether to include more funding for Ukraine in a continuing resolution to fund the American government, a non-governmental organization connected to the Ukrainian government is adding American citizens to a public hit list.

The list, officially named the “Myrotvorets” list, which translates to “Peacemaker” in English, is managed bythe Myrotvorets Centre, a non-governmental organization based in Kiev with known ties to the Ukrainian government.Its founder, for example, is the Ukrainian politician and political activistGeorge Tuka.The website explicitly says the list is meant to provide “Information for volunteers of the Peacemaker Center and employees of law enforcement agencies and intelligence services of Ukraine and other countries (except the Russian Federation).” Its pages are littered with calls for violent retribution not only against Russia or Russians, but anyone perceived to be against the Ukrainian war effort.

Jack Posobiec, Human Events senior editor, is the latest American citizen to be added to the Myrotvorets list. In the database, Posobiec is identified as an “anti-Ukrainian propagandist” and a “provocateur” that is a “participant and initiator of information special operations in favor of the Kremlin.” The Myrotvorets Centre implores “law enforcement agencies to consider this publication on the website as a statement about the commission by this citizen of deliberate acts against the national security of Ukraine, peace, the security of humanity and international law and order, as well as other offenses.”

In the past, the list has included the names of other American citizens,such as Tucker Carlson, Elon Musk, and Glenn Greenwald.World leaders have also found themselves on the Myrotvorets list from time to time, including Pope Francis.

While the database page does not call directly for Posobiec’s assassination, other database entries, atop the other aforementioned violent messages on the site, are awfully telling. Darya Dugina, a Russian journalist killed by a car bomb, still has an entry on the Myrotvorets list. Instead of a blue header with her name, akin to Posobiec’s, her header is black with text that has a fiery effect. Dugina, according to the Myrotvorets Centre, was engaged in “propaganda of Russian fascism and Nazism,” “dissemination of Kremlin propaganda in the form of so-called ‘Russian world,’” and provided “information support for the military attack of fascist Russia on Ukraine.” Dugina’s picture has red text plastered across her face that reads “liquidated,”in English, which is the same term the Ukrainian military uses when reporting the number of Russian soldiers they’ve allegedly killed.

When Dugina’s car exploded in August of 2022, the National Republican Army, a Russian partisan group that seeks to remove President Vladimir Putin from power, claimed responsibility for Dugina’s death. An investigation conducted by Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), however, concluded that Ukrainian special services were responsible for Dugina’s assassination. Nevertheless, the Myrotvorets Centre apparently rejects both of these theories and claims Dugina was “liquidated by the special services of fascist Russia due to interspecies disagreements.”

It is both surprising and unsurprising just how quickly a list of disinformers and provocateurs has turned into a kind of hit list. Did Ukraine get this impulse from its historic ties from Russia, or from its benefactor the United States?

Washington’s ‘credibility at stake’ – Polish FM (Angry Little Pollack says)

The US will lose credibility if Congress fails to approve US President Joe Biden’s request for additional military funding for Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski has warned. (Fuck Off idiot, find some friends to screw in that lightbulb)

Though the Senate passed a $95 billion bill with aid for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan earlier this month, opposition from House Republicans stalled the legislation, as they seek to tie their demand for tighter border controls to stem the flow of illegal immigration to renewed aid for Ukraine.

House Speaker Mike Johnson refused to put the bill to a floor vote, saying it could be weeks or even months before Congress sends it to Biden’s desk.

“They are outgunned. Around Avdeevka, outgunned in artillery eight to one,” he added, blaming the situation on the front line on House Republicans, who would not pass the supplemental funding bill that includes more than $60 billion in aid for Ukraine.

Asked what his message to House Speaker Mike Johnson would be, Sikorski responded, “I would say… it is the fate of Ukraine, it is the tortured people of Ukraine that beg you, but it is also the credibility of your country that is at stake.” (NOwe will not support this loser country. He went on to recall Biden’s visit to Kiev last year, saying the president “planted the standard of the United States” by pledging “to do whatever it takes for however long it takes”to help Ukraine prevail, adding that the words need to be backed up by action.

For months, Biden has struggled to have additional military funding for Kiev passed in Congress, arguing that Ukraine will lose the conflict without US assistance.

Earlier this month he blamed the fall of Avdeevka, a key Donbass stronghold for Kiev, on “congressional inaction,” claiming that Ukrainian forces were forced to withdraw due to dwindling supplies of ammunition.

Moscow has condemned the Western arms shipments to Ukraine, arguing that they will only prolong the conflict.

EU nation’s PM decries ‘martial’ mood at Ukraine meeting

Slovakia will under no circumstances send troops to help Kiev fight Russia, Robert Fico has insisted

Pro-Ukrainian leaders of EU states seem intent on continuing hostilities with Russia “at all costs,” Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico claimed after a key security meeting in Paris on Monday. Bratislava’s fears have been confirmed in this respect, he added.

The gathering was convened by French President Emmanuel Macron to discuss EU members’ Ukraine policy, in light of battlefield setbacks for Kiev and other challenges. Following the meeting, Macron said the official deployment of Western troops to Ukraine cannot be ruled out, even though there is no consensus on the issue.

The event was remarkable due to a “purely martial atmosphere,” Fico saidin a video statement. He declined to reveal who had said what behind closed doors, but stated that pro-Ukrainian participants had appeared determined “to support the war at all costs.”

“I was very surprised that not a single word was said about any peace plan,” the Slovak prime minister stressed.

The Fico-led government remains “peace-oriented” and will not provide weapons to Kiev, let alone send Slovak troops to its aid, he insisted. Bratislava’s help will instead be focused on civilian projects, a position that Fico said he had conveyed to other national leaders.

Macron arguedin his post-meeting remarks thatKiev’s backers must “ratchet up” their support because “Russia must not win,”arguing that EU security was at stake.

The French leader cited the escalation of Western military aid to Ukraine – from “helmets and sleeping bags” to long-range missiles and fighter jets – to explain why the reluctance over a direct military confrontation with Russia may change in the future.

”We are determined to do everything necessary for as long as necessary. That is the key takeaway from this evening,” Macron declared.

Moscow perceives the Ukraine conflict as a US-initiated proxy war on Russia, in which Ukraine and EU nations are forced to pay the price. Fico is among the European politicians to have openly questioned the Western approach and its rationale.
