Also raised was fact that Wikileaks was not the first or only outlet to recieve said classified documents from Manning, but the prosecution has been selective (targeting Assange) with no explanation for this behavior.

"License To Play God": Physician Group Files Brief Against Biden In COVID

The Association of American Physicians and Surgeons (AAPS) filed an amicus brief against the Biden administration in a Supreme Court case, criticizing the government’s online censorship of COVID-19 information.

The lawsuit, Murthy v. Missouri, alleges that the administration engaged in coercing social media platforms to suppress COVID-19 content.

The American Medical Association (AMA) and other groups filed an amicus brief with the Supreme Court supporting the Biden administration.

In its brief, AMA and its allies said that the federal government had a “compelling interest” in the case. They justified censorship by arguing that “combatting vaccine misinformation is, at its simplest, the government trying to prevent factually incorrect statements from costing people their lives.”

The AAPS filed its brief on Feb. 7, slamming AMA’s position.

“Our national motto is not ‘In Vaccines We Trust’, or even ‘In Government We Trust.’ The right to criticize vaccines and government mandates of vaccines should not be abridged” as sought after by the AMA and “other allies of the Biden Administration,” the brief said.

“Freedom to criticize is an essential safeguard against tyranny, and a First Amendment right … It is alarming that any professional organization would argue for censorship as the AMA Amici do in this case.”

The AMA amicus brief is supported by the American Academy of Pediatrics, the American Academy of Family Physicians, the American College of Physicians, and the American Geriatrics Society.

“The argument by the AMA Amici to declare a compelling interest in vaccination such that censorship of it would be allowed should be firmly rejected here,” AAPS said in its brief. For more than 50 years, there have not been any new categories of unprotected speech, it said.

“Criticism of vaccination is warranted in response to the exaggerations of benefits of vaccination and the denial of its proven harms, as illustrated by the AMA Amici brief here.

“A sharp decline in the prevalence of diseases cited by the AMA Amici began before the relevant vaccine became commonly used, thereby disproving the asserted cause-and-effect.”

The AMA brief also fails to reference the “immense harm” caused by several novel or contaminated vaccines, like the first polio shots, AAPS stated.

Allowing the federal government to censor vaccine criticism will open the doorway to “an unaccountable license to play God in tinkering with human biology.”

AAPS warned that by seeking to censor criticism of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccine, the AMA brief signers “implicitly seek censorship of criticism of anything that may be called a vaccine in the future under yet another redefinition of that term.”…

Ukraine’s AI Drones Seek And Attack Russian Forces Without Human Oversight

Ukrainian developers have confirmed that their drones are now carrying out autonomous strikes on Russian forces without a human operator. This is the first time such drones are known to have been used, as UN allegations about autonomous attacks in Libya in 2020 remain unproven.

The Saker Scout drones can find, identify and attack 64 different types of Russian ‘military objects’ on their own, operating in areas where radio jamming blocks communication and prevents other drones from working.

The quadcopter Saker Scout, came into service last month and can carry three kilos of bombs to a range of around 12 kilometres. Small drones operated by remote control have proved extremely effective as bombers with modified RKG-3 anti-tank grenades or RPG warheads and can destroy even heavy tanks.

AI In The Service Of Ukraine

The Saker company was founded in 2021 to develop affordable AI for small business, with applications as drone-based vision systems crop protection. When Russia invaded, the company switched to assisting the military. One of the first requirements was an AI to help a drone operator spot vehicles concealed by vegetation or camouflage.

Saker’s system is based on machine learning and the developers say it can currently recognize 64 different types of ‘military object’ including tanks, personnel carriers and other hardware. It is continuously improved and is updated on demand when there is a requirement to detect a specific new object or vehicle type. An early Saker video shows the system identifying light and heavy armor (personnel carriers and tanks) and trucks as it flies over them.

Saker AI software is also capable of visual navigation using known landmarks on the ground, so a drone can find its way even if GPS is jammed.

The Saker Scout is integrated with Ukraine’s Delta intelligence distribution system which fuses data from drones, satellites and other sources to produce a complete map of the battlefield. A Saker Scout can reconnoiter an area on its own and bring back information. Rather than just raw video, the software highlights enemy vehicles, so a the drones map out enemy positions which would otherwise take hundreds of hours of analysis by humans – not practical when you are fighting a war in real time.

The aim is to enable an extremely fast reconnaissance-decision making-strike process (also known as the ‘kill chain’) in a way that is not possible when humans are involved. Saker suggest that a kill-chain moving at machine-speed, with minimal human involvement, could be transformational in defeating Russian forces.

The Saker Scout can act as a hunter for FPV ('First Person View') attack drone teams: the AI acts as an observer pointing out targets, and automatically passes details to FPV attack drone operators who will verify a target before striking it.

Autonomous Attack Drone

The most radical use of the Saker Scout is to carry out attacks without a human in the loop, finding and hitting targets autonomously. A company spokesman confirmed to me that the Saker Scout had already been used in this mode, but only on a small scale. Most likely it is only used autonomously when radio interference or jamming prevents direct operator control. A video from Saker shows one of their drones carrying out a bombing mission. It is not known if this was autonomous.

The spokesman noted that the AI is not perfect, but their priority was getting a useful system that saves lives into the field. As mentioned, Saker are in constant contact with users and the system is updated continuously.

Going forward, if the system is deemed to be sufficiently reliable, large numbers of autonomous attack drones could be deployed simultaneously without the need for trained operators, or limited radio bandwidth. Dozens of bomber drones could attack simultaneously, immune to jamming and anti-drone guns, possibly targeting jammers or other defenses to make way for operator-controlled drones.

Many campaigners have sought to ban this type of ‘killer robot’, but Paul Scharre, Director of Studies at the think tank Centre for a New American Security, told me that despite UN discussions going back as far as 2014, there is still no international agreement.

If adopted, AMA’s proposal would allow the government to censor presidential candidate Robert F. Kennedy Jr., whose book “The Real Anthony Fauci” could also be banned by the administration, AAPS added.

“The same arguments made by the AMA Amici could be extended to other types of speech disfavored by the Biden Administration, such as criticism of transgender procedures and late-term abortion,” the group said.

“The requested censorship by or with government should be fully rejected here.”

TheU.S. Supreme Court will hear oral arguments on March 18.The lawsuit was filed by the state of Missouri, Louisiana, several social media users, and the founder of the blog Gateway Pundit.

The Epoch Times reached out to the White House and AMA for comment.

Under President Joe Biden, the federal government is alleged to have engaged in censorship of COVID-19 vaccine-related discussions online.

In February 2022, then-White House press secretary Jen Psaki said that the administration wanted “every platform to continue doing more” in calling out what the government deemed to be “COVID-19 misinformation.”

Facebook Faces Pressure

Last year, it was revealed that Facebook complied with requests from White House staff to throttle the reach of a 2021 video by Tucker Carlson that discussed COVID-19 vaccines.

Facebook was also pressured to censor content suggesting that COVID-19 could have been man-made, according to certain emails released last year.

In a message from July 2021, Nick Clegg, Facebook’s head of global affairs, asked colleagues why Facebook was “removing—rather than demoting/labeling—claims that Covid is man-made?”

An employee responded:“Because we were under pressure from the administration and others to do more.”

Earlier this month, newly disclosed emails showed that Biden administration officials pressured Amazon to censor some COVID-19 books.

In another amicus brief filed in the Murthy v. Missouri lawsuit, the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education (FIRE) told the U.S. Supreme Court that “getting the correct answer in this case is extraordinarily important given the interconnected mosaic of First Amendment issues the Court is considering this Term.”

“A common thread running through these cases is whether the government actors may evade constitutional review by strategically claiming they are doing something other than speech regulation. The Court should not let them get away with it.”

The Biden administration is also facing another free speech lawsuit filed in December by the state of Texas and conservative media outlets The Federalist and The Daily Wire.

The lawsuit accuses the State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and several officials from the department’s Global Engagement Center of intervening in the news media market by creating blacklists of outlets deemed to be spreading “disinformation.”

“These entities generate blacklists of ostensibly risky or unreliable American news outlets for the purpose of discrediting the disfavored press and redirecting money and audiences to news organizations that publish favored viewpoints,” the complaint said.

“The pace of technology far outstrips the pace of diplomacy,” says Scharre. “After years of little to no progress in the consensus-based Convention on Certain Conventional Weapons (CCW), humanitarian disarmament activists pushing for a ban on autonomous weapons are taking their case to the UN General Assembly in late October. Whether this process spurs states to take action on autonomous weapons remains to be seen.”

Scharre notes the underlying technology has been around some time, so many others may have comparable systems. Other companies produce drone AI software claimed to be better at spotting targets than a human operator. AeroVironmentAVAV say they are ready with an autonomous version of their SwitchBlade kamikaze drone if there is a demand for it.

In January Mykhailo Fedorov, Ukraine’s Minister for Digital Transformation and lead on the Army of Drones initiative, stated in an interview with AP that autonomous weapons were a “logical and inevitable” next step in drone development, suggesting a quiet but deliberate policy. On October 6th Fedorov announced in an official statement that some 2,000 AI-enabled drones had just been supplied via Army of Drones.

"They will assist in safely carrying out reconnaissance, adjusting artillery fire, and uncovering even well-concealed Russian objectives thanks to AI," Fedorov stated. He did not say whether these drones were also capable of autonomous attack. If not, this capability is only a software update away.

The concern in the past has always been that bad actors would develop this type of technology. However, the moral argument becomes more complex when it is being deployed in an existential fight for Ukraine’s survival against a brutal invasion. As with cluster bombs, Ukraine may be less concerned with possible long-term effects and more concerned about winning the war. But such weapons will not be confined to Ukraine for long.

“Operational pressures are likely to push both sides in the direction of autonomous weapons,” says Scharre.

Scharre notes that while they may initially be limited to military targets like tanks and radar, autonomous weapons could soon be used for less discriminate approaches such as targeting personnel.

I want to break from Assange case coverage to explain some things about Julian's situation:

The legal arguments matter a great deal here. But more importantly, the eyes of the world are trained upon the small coutroom in the UK.

It is much more difficult for nefarious entities to flout the protocols of justice, when the world is watching.

This move is also not our last card.

The ECHR will be the next step, should the ruling be disfavourable toward Julian.

This means petitioning the European Court of Human Rights to step in.

It remains to be seen however, if Julian would not just be whisked away immediately by the U.S. Or if the UK courts will recognize the authority of the ECHR (British law was adapted recently in their bid for "autonomy" and the sovereignty of the ECHR is murky at best).

If* it comes to extradition. By virtue of a rather clever plan I had the honor of helping devise; we were able to secure some of the best legal representation in the U.S. for him, Barry J. Pollack, one of the greatest trial lawyers in the U.S. (he infamously obtained the aquittal of one of only 2 people acquitted in the Enron case. He also managed to overturn a double murder trial against a man convicted and wrongly imprisoned for 17 years).

In short, we are prepared, as much as can be. Assange has a rock solid legal defense, and a system of global support around him.

But* There are dangers to this still. Assange is not well, he has not been for some time. He suffered a mini-stroke last October, and recovery has been slow. Also, decades of isolation have had an effect on his well being in general. By incriment and measure, he has suffered from depression and had issues with auditory hallucinations and other things. He has more than once threatened suicide rather than be extradited to the U.S. to face the bulwark of a visciously unfair and brutal prison and justice system.

Both his wife, and friends fear for his life should this case go awry.

Assange needs to be free.

Even the best defense and the greatest system of support here is not without very real risks.

Keep your eyes on this case, and be loud across the internet. Push your representatives to be loud as well.

I helped stir this storm up to protect his life, and we must not let that fail.

At risk here is much more than just Julian's life. Your press freedom, your right to speak freely, and most importantly your right to know the crimes of your own government are all on trial here.

Lockbit cybercrime gang faces global takedown with indictments and arrests

LONDON/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An international law enforcement operation led by Britain's National Crime Agency and the FBI has arrested and indicted members of the Lockbit ransomware gang, in an unprecedented police operation that has struck one of the world's most notorious cybercrime gangs.

The United States unsealed an indictment on Tuesday charging two Russian nationals with deploying Lockbit ransomware against companies and groups around the world, the Department of Justice announced.

The indictment was made public as the NCA, U.S. Department of Justice, FBI and Europol gathered in London to announce the disruption of the gang, which has targeted over 2,000 victims worldwide, received more than $120 million in ransom payments and demanded hundreds of millions of dollars, the DOJ said.

Defense is raising an Article 7 ECHR/ 5th Ammendment argument, stating that multiple forms of classified material have been published and gone unprosecuted, stating there is no precedent in U.S. law for the prosection of journalists.

They are arguing that the previous judge refused to engage that line of legal argument stating it should be resolved in U.S. courts because it is a 5th ammendment issue (due process).

Defense argues that because Article 7 of the ECHR applies, the judge should have had to engage it and acknowledge its legal standing.

Hamas leaders hiding in basement of Israel-built hospital in Gaza

Senior Hamas officials in Gaza are hiding out in a "bunker" built by Israel, intelligence officials suspect: Many are believed to be in the basements of the Shifa Hospital complex in Gaza City, which was refurbished during Israel's occupation of the Gaza Strip.

Shifa, the coastal strip's largest hospital, was built while Gaza was under Egyptian rule, before 1967.

During the mid-1980s the building underwent massive refurbishment as part of a showcase project to improve the living conditions of residents.

Millions were invested in the project, which was overseen by Shmuel Goren, the coordinator for activities in the territories at the time.

The Israeli civil administration in the territories constructed the hospital complex's Building Number 2, which has a large cement basement that housed the hospital's laundry and various administrative services.

During a cabinet meeting a week ago, Shin Bet chief Yuval Diskin said senior Hamas officials found refuge in the hospital basement because they know Israel would not target it, due to the patients in the upper floors. Palestinian sources told Haaretz that not all the senior Hamas leaders are hiding in one place.

Rather, they have spread out, and some are constantly changing locations. Some of the bunkers they are using were linked by tunnels Hamas built in recent years.

Article 10 of the ECHR protects whistleblowers if documents are authentic and it is well within the public interest to know.

It protects both their right to recieve and send such information; including in cases of classified documents if, like in Manning's case; said documents were improperly classified to cover up war crimes.

This pertains to the charge against Julian for allegedly (again, unprovably) offering to help Manning procure the documents if needed.

If in fact the documents were improperly classified and covering up war crimes (they were); then Manning as a whistleblower falls under that protection of the ECHR and by extension, the journalist helping break that story in public interest.
