King Charles III Diagnosed With Cancer, Postpones Public Duties

King Charles has cancer, Buckingham Palace has said in a statement, and he will postpone his public duties while undergoing a programme of treatment that began today.

Just days after being discharged from hospital for treatment of a non-cancerous enlarged prostate, it has been revealed King Charles III also has cancer. The cancer was discovered during tests the monarch underwent during his hospital stay, which identified a “separate issue of concern”.

Subsequent testing confirmed the King does have a non-specified “form of cancer”, Buckingham Palace said, and that he had already started a regime of treatment today.

The BBC reports the King has received treatment in London as an outpatient.

While the King is unable to perform public duties, the Palace made clear his constitutional role is unaffected as he would be able to continue to undertake “State business and official paperwork as usual”.

Health officers push for 'smokable fentanyl' to make drugs 'safer' in British Columbia

Toxic drugs killed 2,511 people in 2023 – a provincial record.

It’s difficult to smoke tobacco anywhere in British Columbia but Provincial Health Officer Dr. Bonnie Henry wants smokable fentanyl to be part of the province's “prescribed safer supply” of drugs policy.

Henry says the province should be offering more drug choices and she wants to work with drug manufacturers and distributors to make that a reality.

A new report from her office outlines what she calls an “ethical analysis” of an alleged safer supply of drugs means that intervention to reduce certain or severe harm to drug users is justified even if it means “uncertain harm” coming to the rest of the population.

Henry says this approach is more compassionate.

"We need to replace it with the compassion and understanding that I know we have in this province," she said at a news conference.

Henry is not happy with the province calling its drug strategy – one based entirely on the disputed principle of “harm reduction” – “prescribed safer supply,” instead stating that the term should be "retired" and replaced with “prescribed alternatives” to potentially deadly drugs. Continue…

South Korea’s electric vehicle (EV) sales fell by 0.1% last year for the first annual decline since 2017, as drivers cite fears of batteries catching fire and insufficient number of chargers as key obstacles alongside higher interest rates and high prices.

South Korean drivers are concerned that their future EVs could catch fire while charging or in a car crash, according to a November survey by the Korea Transportation Safety Authority quoted by Bloomberg on Monday.

In 2020 and 2021, several high-profile cases of EVs catching fire were reported in South Korea. Three years ago, an electric bus manufactured by Hyundai Motor caught fire while in use.

A few months earlier, Hyundai Motor recalled more than 77,000 Kona EVs sold globally after 13 of the electric crossover vehicles caught fire. Hyundai and its battery supplier LG Chem were at odds over the reasons for the recall, with the battery cell maker saying it wasn’t its battery that was the culprit.

Another key reason for lower EV sales and increased hesitancy among South Korean drivers to switch to zero-emission vehicles has been a lack of enough charging points. Continue…

Waste Of The Day: Over $1 Billion In Weapons Missing In Ukraine

Topline: The Department of Defense has failed to properly track $1 billion worth of weapons provided to Ukraine, according to an internal audit released on Jan. 10 by the DOD Inspector General.

Key facts: The DOD is supposed to use special “enhanced end-use monitoring” techniques” to “safeguard” key weapons such as smaller, high-tech weaponry provided to Ukraine, which are likely targets for theft.

The audit says these monitoring procedures are not properly being followed in Ukraine, due to staffing shortages, poor internal logistics and more.

The audit found that $1 billion of the $1.7 billion — or 59% — in enhanced end-use monitoring designated weapons provided to Ukraine as of June 2023 are “delinquent,” meaning they can’t be accounted for in inventory reports.

Maybe the weapons are being used properly; maybe they have been stolen by Russian forces. No one can be completely sure.

The 59% delinquency rate is an improvement over the 86% of weapons that were unaccounted for in December 2022.

The weapons include night-vision devices, anti-tank missiles, attack drones and small-diameter bombs.

The report also found that inventory databases were not regularly updated and that the Ukrainian Armed Forces failed to properly report missing weapons. Continue…

US authorities have arrested and charged two accused ringleaders who are both undocumented migrants.

A third alleged leader remains at large in Canada, where authorities say they have no powers to detain him.

Several hundred people gathered in three border states Saturday to call for stricter immigration security, ending the cross-country “Take Our Border Back” convoy that traveled from Virginia to Texas last week.

Convoy organizers and supporters initially said as many as 700,000 vehicles would take part in three separate rallies in Arizona, California and Texas, including truckers who took part in recent protest convoys in Washington, D.C., and Canada, according to U.S. Rep. Keith Self, R-Texas.

While hundreds of thousands of vehicles never materialized as the convoy moved across the country, about 100 passenger vehicles, recreational vehicles and trucks towing campers arrived in Texas, according to NBC News.

The Texas rally occurred at the Cornerstone Children’s Ranch in the town of Quemado, about 20 miles outside of Eagle Pass. The daylong event included musical performances, vendors and speakers who voiced their concerns about illegal immigration.

“The mission here is the border, that’s what we’re here for,” said Trenis Evans, one of the speakers at the Quemado rally.

At another “Take Our Border Back” rally Saturday in San Ysidro, California, convoy organizer Scotty Saks said the border is “a national security crisis.”

“We have a human trafficking problem on the border in proportions that we’ve never imagined,” Saks told a crowd of about 200 people, according to the New York Post.

Danielle Smith opens Alberta representative office in Ottawa

Alberta Premier Danielle Smith and her new special envoy to Ottawa are encouraging other provinces to join them and set up shop in the nation’s capital.

James Carpenter has been appointed as Alberta’s senior representative to the federal government as the province reopens an Ottawa office for the first time in nine years.

In a press conference Monday morning, Smith encouraged other provinces to follow Alberta’s lead.

“You could probably talk to any premier. I don’t think any one of them has a very positive or constructive relationship with the federal government right now for the same reasons that we do,” Smith said from Ottawa. “It doesn’t matter what the political stripe is.”

Carpenter echoed the premier’s calls for more provinces to join him, saying that Quebec is the only other province with an office in the capital, even though it’s just across the river.

“If Quebec needs to have an office in Ottawa, it would make you wonder a little bit why Alberta hasn’t had one for a while,” he said in an interview with True North. Continue…

A taxpayer advocate is sounding the alarm over the Quebec government’s “risky gamble with taxpayers’ money.”

Montreal’s Olympic Stadium is set for a significant overhaul with the announcement of a new $870 million roof, a project spearheaded by the Quebec government and expected to be completed by 2027.

The announcement was made by ministers Caroline Proulx and Chantal Rouleau, alongside Parc Olympique president and CEO Michel Labrecque, at a news conference on Monday morning.

The stadium was built for the 1976 Summer Olympics. Having existed for almost 50 years now, the stadium had previously made headlines for the issues with its roof. Quebec Tourism Minister Caroline Proulx said that the first retractable roof, installed in 1988, was a disaster, as numerous tears appeared soon after installation. A second retractable roof was installed a decade later, which tore off in a snowstorm in 1999.

Officials have been looking to replace the roof again for more than 20 years.

Liberals break NDP promise with delay in dental plan expansion deadline

The federal government announced that it won’t be expanding the eligibility of its full dental plan until 2025, despite the pledge being one of the key promises that the Liberals made to the NDP under their confidence-and-supply pact.

The dental-care plan was designed to eventually cover the dental costs for all uninsured Canadians who earn less than an annual household income of $90,000.

The initial pact between the Liberals and the NDP called for the program to be fully implemented by the end of the year, to ensure that there wouldn’t be a federal election before 2025.

However, the Trudeau government announced last week that expanding the program to adults aged 18 to 65 wouldn’t begin until some time next year.

“I got a clear answer that it would begin before the end of 2024,” said NDP health critic Don Davies, referring to an email he received from Health Minister Marc Holland only a week before the latest change in deadline.

Canada pledges closer ties with EU to regulate the internet

Canada has agreed to work more closely with the European Union to further regulate the internet.

Innovation Minister François-Philippe Champagne and EU Commissioner for Internal Market Thierry Breton pledged to work together on several key priorities, including internet regulation, last Thursday.

“On online platforms, the EU and Canada intend to continue to cooperate and exchange information on measures to ensure transparency, fairness and accountability and to make the Internet a safer and more inclusive place for users,” a government press release reads.

“In the coming year, the partners aim to exchange on the implementation of their respective frameworks.”

The European Union’s Digital Services Act has raised concerns among civil liberties groups in Europe for its excessive nature.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation and numerous human rights and free speech advocacy groups urged Breton last July to clarify that the Digital Services Act does not empower authorities to use internet shutdowns as a punitive measure.

“Arbitrary blocking of online platforms and other forms of internet shutdowns are never a proportionate measure and impose disastrous consequences for people’s safety,” the foundation warned. Continue…

The City of Calgary confirmed receiving a formal petition to recall Mayor Jyoti Gondek under Alberta’s recall legislation.

Former premier Jason Kenney’s UCP government introduced recall legislation in 2020, which came into effect under the Municipal Government Act (MGA) in 2022. This notice marks a historic first under the legislation.

Initiated by local HVAC company owner Landon Johnston, the petition reflects growing dissatisfaction with Mayor Gondek’s leadership. True North reached out to Jonhston for comment but has not yet received a response.

Elections Calgary confirmed receiving the recall petition on January 30, 2024. The petition was reviewed and deemed compliant, triggering the 60-day signature collection period, which will end on April 4. To be validated, the City Clerk’s Office must receive the petition, with the required number of signatures by that date.

Achieving the recall requires signatures from 40% of eligible voters in the city’s population of 1,285,711, totalling 514,284 signatures, significantly higher than the total votes cast in the 2021 election. During the last municipal election, Gondek received 176,344 of the total 393,090 votes cast.

The petition is not online. All signatures have to be physically signed and verified.

A concerned uncle has chosen to speak out after two teen girls were startled to find themselves changing in the presence of a biological male at the Vernon Aquatic Centre last month.

As first reported by Castanet News on Friday, the teens were confronted with the grown man who may identify as a woman while participating in a lifeguarding program at the centre.

"My niece had a 50-year-old man come into the change room, strip naked in front of her and her friend, she’s 14, and put on a woman’s bathing suit and go out," the uncle, Kevin, told Castanet News.

Kevin also informed Castanet that he contacted the Aquatic Centre's manager after learning about the disturbing incident and was shocked by the response he received. "He basically said that the kids have no rights and that the transgender person’s rights take precedence. This is something I think parents should know," said Kevin.

Alberta’s new parental rights policies, announced by Premier Danielle Smith last week, come amid ongoing support for pro-family legislation and months of demands for legislation to protect children and parental rights.

“Making permanent and irreversible decisions regarding one’s biological sex while still a youth can severely limit that child’s choices in the future,” Smith told Albertans on Wednesday.

Under the newly announced policy, parental consent is required for children up to 15 years old who wish to go by a different name or be referred to by opposite-sex pronouns at school. For children aged 16 and 17, parental consent is not required, but parents must be informed of their child’s decision.

With considerably lower efficacy rates, mRNA COVID-19 vaccines cause more deaths than save lives, according to a new study whose researchers called for a “global moratorium” on the shots and “immediate removal” from childhood immunization schedule.

The peer-reviewed study, published in the Cureus journal on Jan. 24, analyzed reports from the initial phase 3 trials of Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 mRNA vaccines. These trials led to the shots being approved under Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) in the United States. The study also looked into several other research and reviews of the trials. It found that the vaccines had “dramatically lower” efficacy rates than the vaccine companies claimed.

Moreover, based on “conservative assumptions, the estimated harms of the COVID-19 mRNA vaccines greatly outweigh the rewards: for every life saved, there were nearly 14 times more deaths caused by the modified mRNA injections.”

“Given the well-documented SAEs (serious adverse events) and unacceptable harm-to-reward ratio, we urge governments to endorse and enforce a global moratorium on these modified mRNA products until all relevant questions pertaining to causality, residual DNA, and aberrant protein production are answered.”

The authors also recommended an “immediate removal” of the COVID-19 vaccines from the childhood immunization schedule. They pointed out that children were at very low risk from the infection.

“It is unethical and unconscionable to administer an experimental vaccine to a child who has a near-zero risk of dying from COVID-19 but a well-established 2.2 percent risk of permanent heart damage based on the best prospective data available.” Continue…

Moderna Scientists Warn mRNA Vaccines Carry Toxicity Risks

The technology used in Moderna’s COVID-19 vaccine carries toxicity risks, scientists with the company said in a new paper.

“A major challenge now is how to efficiently de-risk potential toxicities associated with mRNA technology,” the scientists wrote in the paper, which was published by Nature Reviews Drug Discovery on Jan. 23.

The Moderna and Pfizer COVID-19 shots use modified messenger ribonucleic acid (mRNA) technology. The mRNA is delivered by lipid nanoparticles (LNP).

The toxicity risks include “lipid nanoparticle structural components, production methods, route of administration and proteins produced from complexed mRNAs,” the authors of the paper said.

Authors of the paper include Eric Jacquinet and Dimitrios Bitounis, Moderna employees, and Maximillian Rogers, who was working at Moderna when the paper was being done.

Moderna didn’t respond to a request for comment.

The mRNA vaccines have multiple known side effects, including heart inflammation and severe allergic shock. Those may stem from hypersensitivity reactions, which can be elicited by “any LNP-mRNA component” but are most likely triggered by PEGlyated lipid nanoparticles, which is “the most potentially reactogenic component,” the scientists said.

Polyethylene glycol, or PEG, an ingredient in the Pfizer and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, is known to cause allergic reactions. Outside scientists are divided over the mechanism behind the heart inflammation, while Pfizer has posited that the LNPs are behind the issue.

That was the stark warning the Business Council of Canada issued in a letter to key deputy ministers in charge of implementing the Liberal government’s policy.

Michael Gullo, the council’s vice-president of policy, emphasized that such a measure doesn’t consider the current status of the economy and would exacerbate existing challenges like inflation.

“Imposing an emissions cap will likely force operators to involuntarily curtail their production. This would effectively reduce the overall capacity of the most productive segment of Canada’s economy at a time when investment and growth is desperately needed,” warned Gullo.

“Some of Canada’s most reputable economists believe that an emissions cap would exacerbate the country’s inflation and affordability problems by applying a broad-based economic shock that will reduce tax revenues and add pressure to the federal deficit.”

Two members of Coutts Four released after plea deal, major charges dropped

After serving nearly two years behind bars following charges for conspiracy to commit murder, Coutts Four members Chris Lysak and Jerry Morin have accepted a plea deal on lesser charges.

The conspiracy to commit murder charges have been dropped, and the two men were released Tuesday afternoon.

Bridge City News confirmed on X that Lysak pleaded guilty to a restricted weapons charge, and Morin pleaded guilty to conspiracy to traffic a firearm.

Justice Vaughan Hartigan accepted a joint recommendation by Crown prosecutors and defence counsel Daniel Song and Greg Dunn, resulting in both men being handed the equivalent sentences of time already served in custody.

The recommendation amounted to a sentence of three years for Lysak and about three and a half years for Morin.

Typically, detainees awaiting trial receive a credit of 1.5 days for each day served. Morin received additional credits for spending 74 days in solitary confinement, which received a multiplier of three days. Continue…

Canadian taxpayers had to pay nearly half a million dollars so the Liberal cabinet could gather for an “affordability” retreat last summer which produced no new plans for the economy.

The Canadian Taxpayers Federation (CTF) received government records showing that the retreat cost taxpayers at least $412,000. Following that, data from online proactive disclosures and answers to order paper questions by the National Post revealed on Monday that the bill for the retreat had risen to $485,196.

The costs could be higher as some receipts are still outstanding, and various departments did not disclose their expenses related to the retreat.

From August 21 to 23, 2023, Trudeau and his cabinet convened at a waterfront hotel in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The retreat focused on addressing the affordability and housing challenges confronting Canadians.

“Spending more than four hundred grand on a three-day retreat to tackle affordability is tone-deaf and unacceptable,” said Franco Terrazzano, the CTF’s federal director, in a press release. Continue…

Speaking exclusively to True North as Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre makes a series of announcements to clamp down on the car theft crisis, the police officer says one big problem is that our lawmakers are looking at it as a “property crime” and not “organized crime.”

Toronto police brass will be speaking at a Liberal summit on car theft and organized crime called for Thursday in Ottawa.

Polievre has vowed, if elected prime minister, to strengthen enforcement around car thefts and oversight of what gets shipped from the port of Montreal.

As the Conservative leader pointed out, quite rightly, insurance claims have skyrocketed as a result of the burgeoning car thefts, forcing up rates in Canada.

The Toronto Police Service insider says 50% of car thefts are carried out by young offenders. Some 40% of those young offenders are out on releases.

There have to be harsher consequences, beyond catch and release, because there’s “huge money to be made” by these kids, who can steal up to four cars a night and make from $500 to $1,500 per car. Continue…

Promoting Canada’s oil and gas sector could get you thrown in the slammer if a New Democrat MP gets his way.

NDP MP Charlie Angus has tabled a private member’s bill in the House of Commons that would ban fossil fuel ads. Anyone who violates the ban could be fined up to $1.5 million or sent to jail for up to two years.

The Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment began pushing for a fossil fuel ad ban two years ago. The organization helped Angus draft the bill.

Bill C-372’s preamble states that “climate change represents an unprecedented and existential threat to people in Canada and around the world.”

The bill prohibits any person from promoting a fossil fuel, a fossil fuel-related brand element or the production of a fossil fuel. Exceptions are made for media reporting and artistic representations where there is no commercial interest.

It also forbids any advertising that is likely to create an erroneous impression about the characteristics, health or environmental effects or health or environmental hazards of the fossil fuel, its production or the emissions that result from its production or use.

Any producer that contravenes this aspect of the bill is subject to a fine of up to $1.5 million and up to two years in jail, or both.

Individuals are subject to a fine of $750,000 for “falsely” promoting fossil fuels.

The bill specifically prohibits advertising claiming that “the practices of a producer or of the fossil fuel industry would lead to positive outcomes in relation to the environment, the health of Canadians, reconciliation with Indigenous peoples or the Canadian or global economy.” This could conceivably prevent Indigenous communities from promoting resource development projects. On Sunday, the Canadian federal government announced that it had decided to extend the ban on foreign ownership of housing until 2027.

The ban, which was introduced in 2023 and set to expire in 2025, prevents foreign commercial enterprises and people who are not Canadian citizens or permanent residents from purchasing residential property in the country.

"For years," Deputy Prime Minister Chrystia Freeland wrote in a press release, "foreign money has been coming into Canada to buy up residential real estate, increasing housing affordability concerns in cities across the country, and particularly in major urban centres."

She lamented the fact that foreign ownership has "fueled worries about Canadians being priced out of housing markets in cities and towns across the country."

The ban, Freeland explained, will be extended to January 1, 2027 as the federal government moves to "build more homes, faster, and put homeownership back within reach for more Canadians."

She added that, "By extending the foreign buyer ban, we will ensure houses are used as homes for Canadian families to live in and do not become a speculative financial asset class."

Under the act, which only applies in metropolitan areas of at least 100,000 people, a residential property is defined as a building with up to three livable units.

As Forbes reports, there are a number of exceptions to the ban. If, for example, a non-Canadian receives property as the result of separation, divorce, or death, they will still be allowed to own it.

Also excepted are non-residents married to citizens, diplomats living in Canada, refugees and those with temporary resident status, and workers who have filed taxes in three of the past four years.

International students are also allowed to own property up to $500,000, but only if they have spent most of the past five years in Canada.

The whistleblower, a Canadian business school graduate, was staggered by the suspicious home loans he discovered in 2022 when he joined a mortgage approval team in a small HSBC branch on the outskirts of Toronto.

He knew of suspicions surrounding Chinese capital in British Columbia real estate, but had never witnessed shady lending while working at an HSBC branch in Campbell River, a bucolic town on the coast of Vancouver Island.

When he arrived at HSBC’s bank in Aurora, an affluent suburb north of Toronto, he discovered explosive growth in home loans to Chinese diaspora buyers during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Chinese migrants living across Toronto were obtaining mortgages from HSBC while supposedly earning extravagant salaries from remote-work jobs in China. In one example, an Ontario casino worker that owned three homes also claimed to earn $345,000 in 2020 analyzing data remotely for a Beijing company.

Before joining HSBC Canada, the whistleblower had studied fake-income mortgage frauds for his Business Masters degree at Vancouver Island University. After arriving at Aurora in February 2022, while digging into the branch’s loan books and interrogating his colleagues, he made mind-blowing assessments.

Since 2015, the whistleblower concluded, more than 10 Toronto-area HSBC branches had issued at least $500-million in home loans to diaspora buyers claiming exaggerated incomes or non-existent jobs in China.

It's official: as we predicted even starting last month Ukraine's top general and commander of the armed forces is now out.

President Zelensky has confirmed that Gen. Valery Zaluzhny has been dismissed, in what appears part of a broader shake-up of top military and government leadership. Zelensky said it is "time for renewal".

Zelensky said Thursday he met with his army chief and that while it's time for significant "changes" - Zaluzhny should remain "on his team". Though the decision had been rumored and reported for over a week, presumably the stall was to negotiate and ensure peaceful transition of the top defense post. There were also widespread reports that Zaluzhny had refused to step down.

"We discussed what renewal the Armed Forces of Ukraine need. We also discussed who could be in the renewed leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. The time for this renewal is now," Zelensky announced in an English statement on X and Telegram.

Zaluzhny had just before the announcement confirmed he had an "important and serious conversation" with Zelensky which focused on changing battlefield tactics and strategy.

The now former top commander has huge popularity among military ranks and especially far-right, ultranationalist and neo-Nazi elements. Will his firing result in mutiny or rebellion among some units?

Very quickly on the heels of news of Zaluzhny's dismissal, Ukraine announced the appointment of Oleksandr Syrskyi as the new commander-in-chief the armed forces. Until now, Gen. Syrskyi was Ukraine's ground forces commander.

According to Ukraine's FT correspondent:

Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umerov thanked Zaluzhny for his “achievements and victories,” saying that the general “had one of the most difficult tasks - to lead the Armed Forces of Ukraine during the Great War with Russia.”

Japan’s damaged Fukushima nuclear plant has been discharging batches of treated radioactive wastewater into the Pacific Ocean for six months. A new report, however, has brought to light a newly discovered leak that caused tons of contaminated water to seep into the ground.

Local media Kyodo News reports that on Wednesday morning - at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear power plant - workers found water leaking from an exhaust port on the outer wall of a high-temperature incinerator building.

According to the plant operator, TEPCO, the contaminated water treatment equipment connected to the exhaust vent inside the building was being cleaned, and water containing radioactive materials leaked out.

TEPCO estimates that 5.5 tons of water, with over 22 billion becquerels of radioactive material, leaked into the soil outside the building.

The leak brings to mind the large amounts of radioactive wastewater accumulated at the facility since the plant was damaged in 2011 by a massive earthquake and tsunami. Since August, TEPCO has been releasing treated radioactive water into the ocean, which is expected to take decades.

Local fishing groups and neighboring countries, including China, have been concerned about the dischargers. Beijing has banned all imports of Japanese seafood.

CAF members charged for trafficking cocaine on military base

Two members of the Canadian Armed Forces face drug trafficking and weapons charges, according to a statement released by the Department of National Defence.

A complaint was filed with military police against the two individuals on Dec. 14, 2023, which alleged that the two men were dealing cocaine to other CAF members as well as local residents in Petawawa, Ontario where the base they were stationed at is located.

The Canadian Forces National Investigation Service was charged with investigating the complaint and the following day the file was assigned to the Hateful Conduct, Extremism, Drugs & Gangs Enforcement team.

The investigation led to the arrest of Bombardier Nathan Saunders and Cpl. Rickardo Bryce, both now facing drug possession and trafficking charges.

Saunders faces additional charges of possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose and careless storage of a firearm.

At the time of the arrest, the two were in possession of cocaine, crack cocaine and methamphetamine, worth a combined “street value of $35,000.”

The DND also reported finding $5,000 in cash and a handgun.

Both men were charged on Wednesday in civilian court.

An updated free trade agreement with Ukraine was passed in the House of Commons on Tuesday, despite objections from the Conservatives, who took issue with the bill’s reference to carbon pricing.

The bill includes a provision stating that Canada and Ukraine will cooperate to “promote carbon pricing and measures to mitigate carbon leakage risks.”

The Liberals passed the bill with the support of the NDP and Bloc Québécois, which will now be reviewed by the Senate.

The Trudeau government has accused the Conservatives of abandoning their support for Ukraine, while a recent survey found Canadians’ support on the issue has started to wane.

“He is choosing to not stand with Ukraine, not stand with Ukrainians, and not stand with Ukrainian Canadians,” said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau during Question Period, referring to Conservative Party Leader Pierre Poilievre.

Poilievre responded by saying that his party does support Ukraine, just not the carbon pricing provision of the bill.

Five people have been arrested and are facing mischief charges for splashing pink paint on the Prime Minister’s Office and blocking a road on Wednesday.

Last Generation Canada demands that the government establish a national firefighting agency that employs and trains 50,000 firefighters to combat wildfires it contends are being caused by the “climate crisis.”

“In addition, the group demands the government implement legally-binding citizens’ assemblies to tackle the climate and ecological crisis within two years,” said the organization in a press release.

Firefighting is a provincial responsibility in Canada; however, Ottawa can send support when requested.

Last year, some Canadian Armed Forces members were sent to the Northwest Territories to support firefighting efforts.

Canada had 126,000 firefighters in 2022, according to the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs’ report. 90,000 of these firefighters were volunteers, and only 36,000 were considered career firefighters.

Chinese “influence scheme” possibly linked to Trudeau Foundation donors: report

A law firm hired to investigate donations received by the Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation from two Chinese businessmen said it “could not exclude the possibility that the donations in question may have been part of a wider influence scheme.”

Additionally, the probe concluded that the foundation violated the Income Tax Act regarding receipts related to the Chinese donations.

The law firm Norton Rose Fullbright was hired by the foundation to investigate the intentions behind several donations received in 2016 and concluded that they were not intended to influence the foundation themselves but instead Prime Minister Justin Truduea’s government.

“We could not exclude the possibility that the donations in question may have been part of a wider influence scheme,” reads the report. “It is important to emphasize the fact that this potential scheme, if any, would have intended to target the Canadian government rather than the foundation itself.”

Findings from the investigation also revealed that Trudeau’s brother, Alexandre, broke internal policy rules by accepting the $200,000 donation without authorization.

“Alexandre Trudeau was not specifically allowed to sign the donation pledge unless authorized to do so,” reads the report. “We did not identify any records or evidence that the Foundation’s board of directors authorized Mr. Alexandre Trudeau to do so. Dr. Gregory Poland, the director of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group, has called for more rigorous detection of vaccine adverse events after suffering a COVID-19 vaccine adverse event.

“While vaccines have an overwhelmingly positive safety profile, it’s essential to address concerns about potential adverse events comprehensively and compassionately,” Dr. Poland and his co-author Dr. Steve Black of the Global Vaccine Data Network wrote in their commentary published in the journal Vaccine.

“Some of these reactions are immediate and easily observable or measurable … Others however are not immediately obvious, or are even clinically ‘silent’ or cryptic, making them challenging to identify and link directly to a vaccine.”

Dr. Poland, the lead author, suffered from what he deemed a “cryptic” adverse event.

In 2021, soon after his second Moderna shot, Dr. Poland was driving back from the clinic when he suddenly heard a whistling sound in his ears.

“It was like someone suddenly blew a dog whistle in my ear,” he told MedPage Today. “It has been pretty much unrelenting.”

He has since attributed his tinnitus to the COVID-19 vaccine and become vocal in advocating for better vaccine adverse event surveillance programs.

Bell to lay off 9% of its workforce, citing CRTC regulations

Bell Media’s parent company is slashing 9% of its workforce, placing much of the blame on a recent decision by the tribunal that regulates and supervises broadcasting and telecommunications in Canada.

The cuts have resulted in Bell Media terminating multiple television newscasts, other programming cuts, and the sale of 45 of its 103 regional radio stations. A total of 4,800 employees will be affected.

The company also announced plans to close 107 The Source stores while starting a partnership with Best Buy Canada to operate the remaining stores, rebranded as Best Buy Express.

Mirko Bibic, President and CEO of Bell Canada Enterprises, wrote an open letter to Bell employees.

“We continue to face a difficult economy and government and regulatory decisions that undermine investment in our networks, fail to support our business in a time of crisis, and fail to level the playing field with global tech giants,” he said. “Of particular concern is a recent decision by the CRTC forcing Bell to provide third party resellers access to our high-speed fibre network before we have even had an opportunity to recoup our multi-billion dollar investment.”

Bibic added that Bell continues to incur $40 million in annual operating losses despite having the most-watched network of local TV stations. He added that Bell’s transformation requires it to move away from highly regulated areas where demand and revenue are declining.

“The City of Quebec will prohibit the use of all solid-fuel-burning appliances throughout its territory from 12:00 p.m. on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, until the lifting of this notice,” the municipality said in a post on X.

The city lifted the ban on Friday at6 a.m.

Responding to the city’s post to X, one resident raised his concerns.

“A notice is not a law. The end. Do not comply! Don’t be an accomplice to abuse through ignorance,” wrote the user, in a mix of both official languages.

The city responded to the citizen on its X post.

“The notice stems from a bylaw adopted by Quebec City. Since September 2021, when a smog issue is issued for Quebec City, it is forbidden to use any solid-fuel heating appliance… including all types of fireplaces, even if certified. First-time offenders are liable to a fine of $300 to $1,000.”
