Cicadas Are Coming: Rare ‘Dual Emergence’ Could Bring One Trillion of the Bugs This Year

The 13-year and 17-year broods that will emerge from underground this spring will be appearing together for the first time in 221 years

Billions of cicadas from two different broods will emerge this spring in a rare, buzzy natural phenomenon that hasn’t happened since 1803.

The insects belong to two distinct populations of periodical cicadas: one that surfaces from underground every 13 years and another that emerges every 17 years. The last time these specific groups—called Brood XIII and Brood XIX, respectively—lined up their cycles and appeared at the same time, Thomas Jefferson was president, reports NBC News’ Denise Chow.

Though some cicadas surface every year, periodical cicadas spend most of their lives underground before emerging en masse every 13 or 17 years to mate and start the cycle over again.

Any pair of broods may occasionally overlap and emerge in the same year. But these specific groups—Brood XIII (also known as the Northern Illinois Brood) and Brood XIX (or the Great Southern Brood)—only appear simultaneously once every 221 years, making 2024 an especially exciting period for entomologists and bug aficionados alike.

The next time the broods align again will be in 2245.

“Nobody alive today will see it happen again,” says Floyd W. Shockley, an entomologist and collections manager at the Smithsonian’s National Museum of Natural History, to the New York Times’ Aimee Ortiz. “That’s really rather humbling.”

The two broods will also overlap geographically: Though at least some of the cicadas will emerge across the Midwest and Southeast, members of both groups are expected to converge in parts of central Illinois and eastern Iowa.

All told, scientists estimate more than one trillion cicadas will be buzzing around a 16-state area, with the greatest numbers emerging in forested regions and urban green spaces.Lined up end-to-end, one trillion cicadas would span 15,782,828 miles—long enough to cover the distance to the moon and back 33 times, per the New York Times.

Cicadas typically appear above ground once soil temperatures reach 64 degrees Fahrenheit. In some places, that could occur as early as late April, and the insect spectacle will likely continue on a rolling basis through May and June.

Once they crawl onto the surface, the nymphs will ditch their exoskeletons—leaving crunchy cicada-shaped shells in their wake—and start flapping their wings. They’ll spend the next six weeks or so making their cacophonous mating calls so they can lay their eggs before they die. In the meantime, they’ll also provide a smorgasbord for birds—and give caterpillars a brief respite from predation in the process. Later, when the cicada eggs hatch, nymphs will emerge and tunnel underground to start the broods’ cycles anew.

The rare, synchronized event should be finished by early July, meaning residents of affected states will once again be able to enjoy some peace and quiet.Cicadas’ mating songs can reach nearly 100 decibels, which is similar to the sound intensity of a chainsaw or a motorcycle.

“It’s pretty much this big spectacular macabre Mardi Gras,” says Jonathan Larson, an entomologist at the University of Kentucky, to NPR’s Clare Marie Schneider. “It’s a lot of singing, lots of paramours pairing up and then lots of dying.”

The broods are expected to draw some bug-curious travelers to the overlapping emergence areas in the Midwest. But some residents of those regions may be less than enthusiastic about the multi-week onslaught of bugs.

“I’ve talked to half a dozen people already who want to go on vacation and come into the area to seek the cicadas,” says Gene Kritsky, a biologist at Mount St. Joseph University and the author of A Tale of Two Broods: The 2024 Emergence of Periodical Cicada Broods XIII and XIX, to NBC News. “In years past, I’ve also helped people plan vacations to leave while the cicadas are here.”

Some of those tourists will be scientists hoping to study everything from the bugs’ range to their reproductive behaviors. For instance, entomologists are curious to know whether the two groups will interbreed, which could possibly lead to the creation of an entirely new brood.

As for people living in the emergence zones, scientists recommend simply leaving the cicadas alone—and, if possible, cherishing this once-in-a-lifetime spectacle. Cicadas don’t carry diseases, bite or sting, and their presence benefits the broader ecosystem. For example, when they tunnel up from underground, they help aerate the soil. When they shed their exoskeletons and, later, die, their bodies provide nutrients to plants. They also naturally prune trees when laying eggs in their branches.

During the sentencing hearing Thursday, U.S. District Judge Ketanji Brown Jackson stressed that Welch's actions "literally left psychological wreckage," The Associated Press reported.

The unfounded "Pizzagate" Internet rumor at the center of this case accused the Comet Ping Pong pizzeria of being the home of a Satanic child sex abuse ring involving top Democrats such as Hillary Clinton. "Speculation and fabrications tied to the bizarre conspiracy theory have been relentlessly circulated by politically motivated fringe sites," as The Two-Way has reported.

Welch heard about the conspiracy theory last December and spent three days reading about it and watching videos, according to a statement that was part of his plea agreement. He then decided to go investigate the matter himself.

"The defendant then took it upon himself to act in what he believed would be a violent confrontation at the restaurant," the statement reads. Welch unsuccessfully attempted to try to persuade friends to join him. He said he believed it would involve "sacraficing [sic] the lives of a few for the lives of many," according to court documents.

Welch then drove to Washington and entered Comet Ping Pong, where numerous children were present. He was brandishing the 3-foot-long rifle and had a loaded revolver in a holster on his hip. Employees and clients fled the pizzeria while Welch looked around the restaurant and moved furniture.

He terrified an employee who inadvertently returned to the restaurant during his "investigation," briefly pointing a gun at him before the employee ran for his life. Welch also shot through the lock of a closet, damaging a computer. Nobody was injured, and he ultimately surrendered to the police.

In court documents, prosecutors said they were seeking a sentence of four and a half years, while Welch's defense had requested a sentence of one and a half years.

In a letter to the court, Welch stated that he was "truly sorry for endangering the safety of any and all bystanders who were present that day." He claimed that he "came to D.C. with the intent of helping people."

Comet Ping Pong advertises itself as a "hipster-heavy pizza parlor" that features "table tennis galore." Its owner, James Alefantis, told NPR in December that the conspiracy theory has been difficult for the restaurant, calling it "an insanely complicated, made-up, fictional lie-based story" and a "coordinated political attack.

Big Pharma Ignores Biden, Raises Prices On 775 Brand-Name Drugs

Top pharmaceutical companies have raised the list price on around 775 brand-name drugs, in spite of President Joe Biden’s publicized efforts to keep prices low.

The Wall Street Journal reports that theseprice hikes have taken place in just the first half of January 2021. According to data collected by 46brooklyn Research and acquired by the WSJ, the median price increase for these drugs is around 4.5%, with some drugs seeing hikes of 10% or more. Notably, the increase is in contrast to the 3.4% year-on-year inflation rate observed in December 2020.

President Biden has adopted policies to control the soaring drug prices, which have been an ongoing problem in the United States. However, pharmaceutical companies seem undeterred by these policies. (Bidan told them to do it this article is to cover his ass)

The president has implemented automatic rebates to Medicare for drugmakers who raise their prices more rapidly than the price of inflation. The rebate mechanism was implemented in December and has affected 48 drugs that come under Medicare Part B. This step towards controlling drug prices has not, however, prevented the top pharmaceutical companies from raising them.

The drugs that have seen the price hikes include several that are typically used by people globally, such as Ozempic and Mounjaro, according to the Wall Street Journal report. Novo Nordisk, a leading pharmaceutical company, has stated that the changes to the list prices are in response to factors like market conditions and rising costs from inflation.

The increase in drug prices is happening despite the COVID-19 pandemic, which has put a tremendous economic burden on individuals around the world. The pandemic-induced financial crisis has increased the burden on people who need to purchase drugs and has made healthcare unaffordable for many. The vaccine rollout has given hope to the people of a better future, but rising drug prices can have a negative impact on the optimism around the same.

The pharmaceutical companies’ disregard for the policy changes implemented by the Biden administrationbegs the question of who is going to enforce the regulations in place to control drug prices. Pharmaceutical companies have a monopolistic hold on the drug industry, and the solution to this problem may lie outside the government’s hands. It requires a global effort to ensure that essential drugs remain affordable to everyone.

Texas Democrat calls on Biden to seize control of Texas National Guard

Rep. Joaquin Castro (D-Texas) is calling on President Biden to take control of the Texas National Guard if the state defies a Supreme Court ruling that allows U.S. Border Patrol officers to take down the border barriers.

“Governor Greg Abbott is using the Texas National Guard to obstruct and create chaos at the border. If Abbott is defying yesterday’s Supreme Court ruling, @POTUS needs to establish sole federal control of the Texas National Guard now,” Castro wrote in a Tuesday post on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Texas Gov. Greg Abbott (R) has been engaged in a months-long feud with the Biden administration over the situation at the border. Abbott has maintained that Biden is not doing enough to address border security, while the Biden administration has said Texas does not have the authority to erect razor wire barriers.

Abbott said in a statement Wednesday that Biden has “ignored Texas’s demand that he perform his constitutional duties” and that Texas has declared an invasion, which will invoke “Texas’s constitutional authority to defend and protect itself.”

“That authority is the supreme law of the land and supersedes any federal statutes to the contrary. The Texas National Guard, the Texas Department of Public Safety, and other Texas personnel are acting on that authority, as well as state law, to secure the Texas border,” he said.

The Supreme Court ruled 5-4 on Monday to allow U.S. Border Patrol agents to remove the razor wire on the border wall placed by Texas law enforcement. The ruling came as tensions between Texas and the federal government continued to rise in recent weeks.

Despite the ruling, Abbott has said that the Texas National Guard will continue to install the razor wire along the border in a post on X. Rep. Chip Roy (R-Texas) also urged Texas to ignore the Supreme Court ruling earlier this week.

“Texas’ razor wire is an effective deterrent against the illegal border crossings encouraged by Biden’s open border policies. We continue to deploy this razor wire to repel illegal immigration,” Abbott said.

Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) criticized Abbott for ordering more razor wire to be installed after the ruling.

“Greg Abbott’s latest stunt after yesterday’s Supreme Court order is malicious, unconstitutional, & against Texas values. Our country needs Congress to create a safer, humane, & more orderly immigration system — not razor wire to cut innocent people or laws that attack families,” he wrote on X.

The Texas National Guard and the Texas Department of Public Safety earlier this month installed fences and razor wire in a riverside park in Eagle Pass, Texas, which state law enforcement also prevented Border Patrol officers from accessing.

Three migrants — two children and one woman — drowned in the Rio Grande just outside the park earlier this month. Border Patrol agents said the Texas National Guard prevented them from accessing the area to aid the migrants, but Texas has denied the accusation.

SICK: German Justice Minister Wants to Downgrade Possession and Distribution of Child P*rn From a Crime Into a Misdemeanor!

Germany’s failing governing coalition is led by the most unpopular Chancellor of this century, Olaf Scholz.

And just when we thought that this government couldn’t get any worse, it turns out it could – and much worse.

It was just 3 years ago when Germany decided to reform and strengthen Section 184b of the Criminal Code: then Justice Minister Christine Lambrecht oversaw the change that changed ‘the distribution, acquisition and possession of child pornographic content’ from a misdemeanor to a crime.

Now, there is a real risk of a year-long prison sentence.

Lambrecht’s successor as Justice Minister, Marco Buschmann, wants to downgrade the offense to a misdemeanor again – and they are doing it with unconvincing justifications.

BILD reported:

“A corresponding draft law is to be passed by the cabinet: The minimum sentence will then be significantly less than one year in prison (the maximum sentence remains of up to ten years). The FDP man is thus responding to practical demands.

Lawyers, public prosecutors and judges complain that the tightening is unrealistic. Because: The judiciary complains that it has to increasingly investigate parents or teachers who find relevant material on children’s cell phones and forward it to the police.”

Judges complain that they have to pursue cases that don’t belong in the criminal courts.

“Bavaria’s Justice Minister Georg Eisenreich (53, CSU) explains to BILD: ‘We want to prosecute child molesters, not parents who warn other parents about child pornography’.”

Reporters from the German paper BILD decided to ask the Federal Ministry of Justice: ‘In how many cases were parents or teachers actually investigated?’

The numbers are not available.

“There is criticism of the defusing. Rainer Becker, honorary chairman of German Children’s Aid, says: ‘What the Federal Minister of Justice has planned is a real hammer. His view is extremely friendly to perpetrators – that makes me very concerned’.”

Buschmann is not even alone in his regrettable stance. German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser has also spoken out ‘in favour of toning down legislation governing sexual offences in Germany’.

“’Tightened penalties have led to youths facing harsh charges if they share nude images with each other’, Faeser told the newspapers of the Funke media group on Friday.

‘It is more important to create awareness about the risks of sharing such private matters than to proceed with harsh criminal charges’, Faeser asserted.

Bridgeport Democrat Mayor Wins Race After His Associate Is Caught Stuffing the Local Ballot Drop Boxes with Bags of Ballots

Mayor Joe Ganim won another victory on Tuesday in the Bridgeport, Connecticut special election for the Democratic primary for mayor. Ganim quickly claimed victory after winning the in-person tally by 274 votes.

In November a local judge overturned the initial primary election after Wanda Geter-Pataky, the Vice Chairwoman of the Democratic Town Clerk and a vocal supporter of incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim, was caught on video stuffing the ballot drop boxes with dozens if not hundreds of absentee ballots.

So Mayor Ganim won again on Tuesday against John Gomes in the Democrat primary.

A Democrat Judge in Connecticut overturned the results of the Bridgeport Democratic mayoral primary.

Superior Court Judge William Clark ordered a new election to be held, citing bombshell video evidence of election fraud as the basis for his decision. The ruling has far-reaching implications, not just for Bridgeport but for the entire country, as it sets a precedent for ongoing and future cases involving mail-in ballot fraud.

The Gateway Pundit reported in September that mayoral candidate John Gomes’ campaign released a damning video showing evidence of election fraud in the Bridgeport Democratic primary. The video has prompted an investigation by the Bridgeport Police Department for “possible misconduct.”

The video on the Gomes campaign’s Facebook page shows a woman dropping stacks of ‘illegal’ ballots into an absentee ballot box outside the Bridgeport government center, where the city’s Registrar of Voters office is located.

The Gomes campaign was able to identify the woman in the footage as Wanda Geter-Pataky, the Vice Chairwoman of the Democratic Town Clerk and a vocal supporter of incumbent Mayor Joe Ganim, who is seeking reelection. Gomes’ campaign claims that the video shows Geter-Pataky dropping off stacks of absentee ballots ahead of the September 12th primary.

“Video surveillance proving that the mayoral election was unequivocally stolen through corruption within City Hall by tampering with absentee ballots,” John Gomes said on his Facebook page.

“This is an undeniable act of voter suppression and a huge civil rights violation. It’s time to restore lasting credibility to our city’s democracy. Once and for ALL. Enough is enough!” he added.

Gravitational wave, Venus missions get European green light

The European Space Agency gave the green light to two missions on Thursday, one to detect ripples in spacetime called gravitational waves and another to probe the secrets of Earth’s closest neighbouring planet Venus.

The Laser Interferometer Space Antenna (LISA) will become the first mission to study gravitational waves from space, with a planned 2035 launch on an Ariane 6 rocket, the ESA said in a statement.

The mission will comprise three spacecrafts that will trail Earth as it orbits the Sun, forming an equilateral triangle in space.

Each side of the triangle will be 2.5 million kilometres, over which the three spacecrafts will exchange laser beams.

By measuring the slight distortions that gravitational waves make to the beams, the mission hopes to reveal their true nature and origin.

Predicted by Albert Einstein in 1916 but only observed for the first time a century later, gravitational waves are tiny distortions in the fabric of space-time which have been compared to ripples on the surface on a lake.

Formed by cataclysmic cosmic events such as the collision of two black holes, they travel through everything at the speed of light almost entirely unimpeded.

Their existence was not confirmed until 2015. Last year, scientists said they had found the first evidence of low-frequency gravitational waves, which are believed to be constantly rolling through space like background noise.

The ESA also officially approved the EnVision mission, which is planned to blast off towards Venus in 2031.

The mission hopes to gain new “important new insight into the planet’s history, geological activity and climate,” the ESA said.

It will be the first mission to directly probe beneath the surface of the inhospitably hot planet using radar technology, the ESA added.

EnVision also plans to launch on Europe’s next-generation Ariane 6 rocket. After years of delays, the rocket is scheduled to have its maiden flight between June 15 and July 31 this year.

Microsoft, which is hitting a daily all time high every day now because supposedly everyone will be using some AI version of MS Office (right before they are laid off thanks to, well, AI) and just surpassed a $3 trillion market cap, announced it would lay off 1,900 people across its video-game divisions including at Activision Blizzard (maker of such iconic games as Call of Duty, World of Warcraft and Diablo), which it purchased for $69 billion in an acquisition that closed late last year, and which was supposed to be the source of growth before MSFT realized that OpenAI (which is neither open, nor is its woke chatbot actually AI) is a far more golden goose. Some are wondering if MSFT bought the game maker just to lay off most of its staff (spoiler alert: yes).

According to Bloomberg, in an email to staff, Microsoft gaming chief Phil Spencer wrote that the cuts represented about 8% of Microsoft’s 22,000 gaming workers. Other video-game companies, including Riot Games, have also enacted mass layoffs.

“Together, we’ve set priorities, identified areas of overlap, and ensured that we’re all aligned on the best opportunities for growth,” Spencer wrote.

State Department Refuses to Condemn Israel Shooting Group of Palestinians Waving White Flag

One Palestinian was killed, and the US says it's up to the IDF to determine if the incident should be investigated

The State Department on Wednesday refused to condemn the shooting of unarmed Palestinian men waving a white flag in the southern Gaza city of Khan Younis, a scene that was captured on video by the UK’s ITV News.

The footage shows an interview with a group of Palestinian men who had their hands raised and said they were trying to locate and rescue their family members. The cameraman then went across the street, and the video shows the men walking down the street with their hands still raised and one holding a white flag.

The man came under fire, and one was killed. A Palestinian videographer who was at the scene told NBC News that the fire came from nearby Israeli tanks. NBC reported that it viewed and verified nine videos of the incident and said the killing took place in an area Israel designated as a “safe zone.”

A reporter for ITV confronted State Department spokesman Vedant Patel about the killing and asked if he would consider it a potential war crime. Patel said he needed more context.

“I have seen that footage, but I am not going to comment on the specifics around that given I’m not aware of the full circumstances on the ground,” Patel said. He continued, saying Israel’s onslaught in Gaza is not an “American operation,” but the US has provided unconditional military aid, intelligence support, and political cover for the slaughter, which has killed over 25,000 Palestinians.

Asked if he would support an investigation into the killing, Patel said it was up to the Israeli military. “That is for the IDF to undertake and to determine based on the circumstances of that situation,” he said.

Patel was also asked about the Israeli tank shelling of a UN shelter in Khan Younis, which occurred on Wednesday. He claimed the US “deplores” the attack but refused to say if the US would discuss it with Israel. “I’m not going to read out every single conversation that we have with the Israelis, ” he said.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) disclosed today that suspected Russian hackers known as Midnight Blizzard gained access to the company's Microsoft Office 365 email environment to steal data from its cybersecurity team and other departments.

Midnight Blizzard, aka Cozy Bear, APT29, and Nobelium, is a Russian state-sponsored hacking group believed to be part of Russia's Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR). The threat actors have been linked to multiple attacks throughout the year, including the infamous 2020 SolarWinds supply chain attack.

In a new Form 8-K SEC filing, HPE says they were notified on December 12th that the suspected Russian hackers breached their cloud-based email environment in May 2023.
