Ukraine threatens Russia with new drone 'bombardment'

General Sergey Baranov has said Kiev wants “to inflict a devastating effect” against Moscow

Kiev is gearing up for a massive drone bombing campaign against Russia this winter, as the fighting on the ground is expected to enter a lull due to harsh weather conditions, a Ukrainian general in charge of UAV operations has said. Kiev has repeatedly used drone strikes in what Russian officials described as “terrorist attacks” on civilian infrastructure, reaching as far as Moscow.

In an interview with The Independent on Sunday, Sergey Baranov, who heads the General Staff’s Main Directorate of Combat Strike Systems, teased a “new aerial bombardment” of Russia’s Crimea Peninsula – which hosts the key base of the Black Sea Fleet – and the country’s border areas.

“We intend to capitalize on the experience we have gained over the previous years and use drones to inflict a devastating effect on the Russians when the fighting will be much more static,” he said.

The general also explained that Kiev places special focus on targeting Crimea – which he described as a key logistical hub – to prevent Moscow from portraying it as its own territory. “We are aggressively fighting against this,” Baranov stressed.

The peninsula overwhelmingly voted to join Russia in a public referendum in 2014following a Western-backed coup in Kiev. Neither Ukraine nor its Western backers have recognized the results.

Baranov noted, however, that Kiev should expect “numerous counterattacks” from Russia, which he said has amassed considerable military resources.

In recent months, Ukrainian forces have ramped up drone attacks on Russian territory, particularly on the bordering Belgorod and Kursk Regions, as well as Crimea, which became the target of particularly massive raids involving dozens of UAVs. The Russian Defense Ministry said that in one such attack which took place last month, Moscow’s forces destroyed a total of 36 drones off the peninsula’s coast.

Around the same time, Ukraine launched a UAV attack on the Kursk Nuclear Power Plant. Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that one of the drones crashed into a nuclear waste storage building, while accusing Kiev of trying to orchestrate “a full-fledged nuclear disaster.”

According to Russian officials, Ukraine has also launched several long-range drone raids on Moscow, with most UAVs being downed by air defenses or veering off course due to signal jamming. On several occasions, nevertheless, some of the aircraft damaged buildings in the Russian capital, most notably in the Moscow City business district.

What’s happening?

A “facekini” is a head covering similar to a lightweight ski mask, The Byte explains. But instead of keeping in warmth, this UV-resistant garment keeps sunlight out. The only openings are for the eyes, mouth, and nostrils.

The facekini has become more popular in the past few years as China’s temperature has increased, The Byte reports. The air temperature has reportedly reached as high as 95 degrees Fahrenheit this summer — and the ground was a scorching 176 degrees.

The Bytealso reports residents and visitors of Beijing wearing protective arm sleeves made of similar materials to the facekini, as well as broad-brimmed hats with built-in fans.

As The Byte explains, the facekini arose where practical concerns met cultural ones. Wearers worry about skin cancer due to too much UV exposure on hot, sunny days. “The main concern I have is potential skin diseases,” Li Xuyan, a 17-year-old student, told the Guardian.

They’re also concerned about tanning and “sun spots,” The Byte says. “We’re concerned about getting sunburned and tanned, so we’re fully prepared,” Hong, a 34-year-old shopowner, told Reuters.

“Are facekinis dystopian? Undoubtably,” The Byte said. “But with temperatures rising all around the scorching — as in, literally-on-fire — planet we call home, we might expect to see any number of similarly Mad Max–ish heat wear fly off shelves in the coming years.”

If you’d rather not put on a scarecrow mask to go outside, the CDC recommends wearing sunscreen. A wide-brimmed hat also shades your face from UV rays, or you can just stay in the shade.

The CDC also reminds readers that clouds don’t block UV radiation, so sun protection is just as important on cloudy days.

ROME — Secretary of State Mike Pompeo recently published a sharp letter excoriating the Vatican’s plans to renew an agreement with the Chinese government on Church operations in China. He promoted the article in a tweet, concluding, “The Vatican endangers its moral authority, should it renew the deal.”

An indignant Vatican took the article more as a calculated affront than a diplomatic gesture. The friction broke into the open on Wednesday as Mr. Pompeo arrived in Rome and met with prelates and others who are hostile to Pope Francis, while the Vatican denied him a meeting with the pontiff and rebuffed his efforts to derail the deal with China.

“Pompeo asked to meet” the pope, who turned him down because Francis had “clearly said that he does not receive political figures ahead of the elections,” Cardinal Pietro Parolin, who, as secretary of state, is the Vatican’s second-ranking official, told reporters.

But to some observers on both sides of the tensions between the Roman Catholic Church and the Trump administration, Mr. Pompeo’s visit is as much about the coming presidential election as about China policy. Mr. Pompeo dismissed that suggestion as absurd, but intended or not, his trip signals that President Trump is on the side of those conservative American Catholics who worry about the church’s direction under Francis and think he is soft on China.

Francis and Mr. Trump, who have exchanged sharp words in the past, present starkly different visions on issues ranging from the environment to immigration to the threat of populism. In appealing to the Vatican’s support for religious freedom as a reason to drop its China agreement, Mr. Pompeo seemed to seek common ground, but in a way that upset the pope’s chief allies and delighted his chief critics.

Cardinal Parolin said Mr. Pompeo’s article had caused “surprise” at the Vatican, because this visit to Rome by the secretary and the meetings with high officials at the Holy See had already been in the works and would have been a “more opportune” forum for airing grievances. He added that Mr. Pompeo’s choice to publish in First Things, a conservative Christian magazine that has called Francis a failure as Pope, also mattered.

Interestingly, DeSantis himself may have spilled the beans during that oddball MSNBC interview.It’s clear this battle isn’t about beating Trump in a fair election—Team DeSantis is aware they don’t stand a chance at the polls.

Their goal is to eliminate President Trump through a politicized justice system, paving the way for DeSantis to step in as the savior. However, there’s a problem. DeSantis’s charisma is sorely lacking. He’s got the allure of a raging flu virus. Unfortunately, the Florida governor, once a rising star, has alienated a significant portion of the Republican base. His deep financial entanglements with NeverTrump and Bush-era donors have led much of the MAGA community to see Ron as just another swamp creature.

Jack Posobiec, editor of Human Events, lays it out plainly: the reason DeSantis hasn’t withdrawn from the race is due to a strategy to deny President Trump the nomination at the convention.

Going into this contest, Ron and his team were cognizant of the fact that Trump commands an insurmountable hold over the party’s rank and file.

To the DeSantis campaign, Trump is not a candidate to defeat at the ballot box or caucus meeting, but an obstacle to be removed, even if it means employing underhanded tactics that disenfranchise voters.

For months, the DeSantis campaign has spoken from both sides of its mouth. On one hand, espousing the idea that a robust and competitive primary process serves to yield a stronger, battle-tested nominee. On the other hand, pleading with other candidates to drop out at various stages and coalesce behind Ron.

Forcing a brokered convention with an outcome that circumvents the will of voters was always the end goal, and those who didn’t see it are either blind or idealistic about their party to a fault.

When the Bragg indictment came down, it was no coincidence that Ron’s response was a disparaging remark about “paying off pornstars.”

When the second indictment came down, Ron’s snide remark about “documents by the toilet at Mar-a-Lago” was an intentional move to validate the Democrats’ weaponization of our justice system, because he views it as politically advantageous to himself.

Ron’s flip-flop from talking about the need for election integrity measures and enumerating problems with the 2020 election to now claiming that Biden won the election fair and square because “Biden won the debate in October 2020” is yet another example of this strategy.

Nuns Raped Girls With Crucifixes as Female Pedophilia Was Covered Up by the Church

A horrifying report on the extent of clerical sex abuse in France has sent shock waves through the Catholic Church. But will it change anything?

ROME—“Marie” was placed in a French Catholic boarding school for “young girls from good families” when she was in the fifth grade. She remembers a nun who would come to her class every day to choose a student to help her with Mass. But the nun wasn’t looking for someone to help her. She was looking for a victim.

“I was 11 and looked 9. She would choose me once every two or three times,” she recalls. “She would take me to her office, lock the door, and then draw the curtains. After which she would put me on her knees to make me read the gospel according to Saint Paul or another saint, while she squeezed me with one hand to her chest and pulled down my panties with the other hand. We were of course in pleated skirts and not in pants. It terrified me and paralyzed.”

“Marie” couldn’t talk to her devout Catholic parents about the abuse until a friend convinced her to do so. The result, she says, was catastrophic. “You are really a pervert, a vicious liar. How dare you say such things?” her parents told her. In fact, her parents had told the nuns that she was being sent to boarding school because she needed to be tamed. “I was truly [a gift] for this nun… because she knew full well that she did not risk anything.”

The abuse lasted the whole year. At the age of 35, “Marie” told her mother again about the abuse. “My mother blissfully told me that it was impossible for a nun to whom she entrusted her daughter to abuse a girl,” she says. “Female pedophilia exists and unfortunately the media never talk about it.”

“Marie” was certainly not alone. Dozens of other victims of priests, nuns, and Catholic school personnel in France form the basis of a 2,500-page report released Tuesday by a special commission led by Jean-Marc Sauvé. While 80 percent of the victims were young boys between the ages of 10 and 13, many young girls were abused as well, and not only by priests. Nuns used crucifixes to rape little girls or forced boys to have sex with them, too.

The commission spent nearly three years combing through complaints and press reports and interviewing victims going back to the 1950s. Of the 3,000 abusers identified by the commission, two-thirds are priests. They found that priests and nuns alone abused around 216,000 children, but that the number climbs to 330,000 when they counted abuse at the hands of non-clergy who worked in Catholic schools and other institutions. The report only covers minors; the authors, who include scholars, psychologists, and law enforcement officials, say there could be many young men and women over the age of 18 who were also victims.

Their summary is damning, determining that the Catholic Church in France showed “a deep, cruel indifference toward victims.”

Survivor Francois Devaux, who founded the victims' group La Parole Liberee, attended the presentation of the report. “You are a disgrace to our humanity,” he said, addressing the church as a whole.

“In this hell, there have been abominable mass crimes… but there has been even worse: betrayal of trust, betrayal of morale, betrayal of children.”

German Nuns Sold Orphaned Children to Sexual Predators

A report German authorities tried to silence shows how Catholic nuns peddled orphaned boys to predatory priests and perverts for decades.

ROME—A jarring report outlining decades of rampant child sex abuse at the hands of greedy nuns and perverted priests paints a troubling picture of systematic abuse in the German church.

The report is the byproduct of a lawsuit alleging that orphaned boys living in the boarding houses of the Order of the Sisters of the Divine Redeemer were sold or loaned for weeks at a time to predatory priests and businessmen in a sick rape trade. The men involved in the lawsuit say as boys they were denied being adopted out or sent to foster families because selling them for rape lined the sisters’ coffers for their “convent of horrors.” Some of the boys were then groomed to be sex slaves to perverts, the report claims.

The alleged abuse went on for years, with one of the males claiming the nuns even frequently visited their college dorms after they had left the convent. He said the nuns often drugged him and delivered him to predators’ apartments. The Order of Sisters of the Divine Redeemer did not answer multiple requests for comment about the allegations.

A second lawsuit, first reported by Deutsche Welle last year, comes after a separate case against the German church led by 63-year-old Karl Haucke who demanded the Archdiocese of Cologne carry out a full investigation into clerical sex crimes, which it concluded in January 2021. But the details of that investigative report were so horrific that Archbishop Reiner Maria Woelki refused to make it public, demanding that any journalists who see it sign confidentiality agreements. Eight German journalists walked out of a press conference in January after being denied access to the church’s investigation unless they agreed not to publish its contents.

Haucke says he was abused at least once a week between the ages of 11 and 14, often by more than one priest. “We had no words to describe what was being done to us. Nor did we know what it meant. And it did not stop at physical pain. We had a clear sense of humiliation and being used,” he told Deutsche Welle when the report was due to be released. He called the stifling of the report's release in January “scandalous” and said that denying the journalists the right to publish the report was “like being abused all over again.”

Several lawyers with access to the 560-page report on the nuns have shared segments with news outlets, including The Daily Beast. The report names various German businessmen and complicit clergy who “rented” the young boys from the nuns who ran a convent in Speyer, Germany between the 1960s and 1970s. Among the worst instances of abuse were gang bangs and orgies the young boys were forced to participate in before being returned to the convent where the nuns would then punish them for wrinkling their clothing or being covered in semen.

“Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesmann, who now leads the archdiocese, said that the abuse report was ‘so gory’ it would be too shocking to make public.”

Haucke, who led a victims' group until he resigned over the censoring of the report, says Woelki told them in October 2020 that the report was not “legally watertight” and contained “inadmissible prejudices” against the Catholic church that were fed by scandals going on elsewhere. “The survivors were used again,” he said, referring to their cooperation in the report only to have it kept private. “People who have already been damaged in their lives by clergymen are being damaged again to protect the institution.”

The lawsuits also spawned a survey within religious orders that found that 1,412 people who lived in or frequented convents, parishes, and monasteries were abused as children, teenagers, and wards by at least 654 monks, nuns, and other members of the orders. Around 80 percent of the victims surveyed were male and 20 percent female. The survey also found that 80 percent of the abusers are now dead, and 37 had left the priesthood or religious order.

The Archdiocese of Cologne told The Daily Beast in a statement that the reason the report was not published was that it failed to fully explain the methodology of the research, but Bishop Karl-Heinz Wiesmann, who now leads the archdiocese, said that the abuse report was“so gory”it would be too shocking to make public. Wiesemann told the Catholic News Agency KNA that after reading it he had to take a month's sabbatical to recover. “I too have limited energy for the burdens I have to carry,” he said.
