US should commit 100 nuclear weapons to defend South Korea – lobbyists

The North’s own atomic arsenal could number 300 by the end of the decade, two pressure groups have claimed

The US and South Korea should collaborate to modernize about 100 tactical nuclear weapons to bolster Seoul’s defenses against an alleged growing threat from Pyongyang, according to a recommendation fromtwo defense industry-linked think tanks on Monday.

North Korea has “already established a nuclear weapon force that could pose an existential threat” to South Korea’s security and is “on the verge” of establishing a similar threat to the US, theAsan Institute for Policy Studiesclaimed in a report titled ‘Options for Strengthening ROK (Republic of Korea) Nuclear Assurance’. The study was conducted in conjunction with American military industry lobby group, theRAND Corporation.

Approximately 100 US nuclear weapons should be modernized at South Korea's expense, the study recommended, adding that they should be housed on US soil but be rapidly deployable to support Seoul’s defensive requirements.

“[North Korean leader] Kim Jong-un appears to be planning a force of at least 300 to 500 nuclear weapons,” the authors of the study claimed, suggesting that Pyongyang could break the 300-weapon threshold by around 2030.

The report stated that North Korea’s current nuclear capabilities include weapons that could kill about 2 million people if launched towards its southern neighbor. Pyongyang has ambitions of using its nuclear arsenal in order to test Washington’s resolve towards its alliance with Seoul, it added, also alleging that the North hopes to “dominate South Korea without having to invade it.”

It further recommended a process to pressure North Korea to relent in its nuclear weapons program by storing some US weapons in South Korea “for both symbolic and operational purposes,” and having “all or part of the nuclear weapons on a US ballistic missile submarine operating in the Pacific to target North Korea.”

In April, US President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart, Yoon Suk Yeol, signed the Washington Declaration, in which the US agreed to extend its military deterrence partnership with Seoul amid an increase in North Korean ballistic missile testing.

Pyongyang has conducted numerous missile tests this year, including an intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) that traveled for almost 1,000km (620 miles) before splashing down in waters west of Japan. This led to increased US and South Korean naval drills in the area.

Last month, North Korea also held a simulation of a tactical nuclear strike that included two long-range missiles. The exercise was intended to “warn enemies,” North Korea’s KCNA news agency said.

The Asan Institute of Policy Studies describes itself as a “non-partisan think tank” dedicated to “undertaking policy-relevant research to foster domestic, regional and international environments” regarding peace and stability on the Korean Peninsula. Israel launches expanded Gaza ground operation — but won’t use the I-word

The former head of the U.S. Central Command, retired Marine Gen. Frank McKenzie, said that purposeful movements into Gaza — as opposed to a full-scale invasion — also ensure the IDF doesn’t get stretched thin.

“This is an infantry fight,” he said. “A lot is going to be put on people on the ground, not just on the front lines, but behind the front lines, ensuring that you are secure [and] that Hamas is not going to pop up in your rear and attack your command posts, your medical aid stations and your all your logistics elements.”

Hamas is equipped with thousands of gallons of fuel that can be used for vehicles and rockets, ammunition, plenty of food and water and medicine — an indication of just how long it has had to prepare for a fight like this. Before this new phase, the Gaza health ministry claimed nearly 8,000 Palestinians had been killed during Israeli retributory strikes and the siege of Gaza, which followed Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack that saw 1,400 Israelis slain.

In his own remarks Saturday, Gallant couched the operation in stark terms, saying, “This will not be a short war. It is a long war that will require us to be strong, as individuals, as a society, as leaders. Above all, our security forces will be strong. This is a war on our home. This is a war we didn’t choose. It’s either us or them.”

3 Expert Shoemakers Say Ron DeSantis Is Probably Wearing Height BoostersKEK

In the last few weeks, posts mocking Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis’ strangely shaped cowboy boots have racked up millions of views on Twitter and TikTok, with online sleuths trying to determine whether he’s wearing height-boosting insoles to pump himself up against a 6’3” primary frontrunner with a penchant for nicknames who reportedly considered calling DeSantis “Tiny D.” (If the 2001 Yale baseball team roster is to be believed, DeSantis stands at 5’11”.) Posters have sketched over photos of the boots, showing where they think DeSantis’ feet sit inside. “Slay queen,” captioned one TikTok user. Hashtags like “parisfashionweek” and “mallgothfashion” abound. And former President Donald Trump himself even shared one of the posts on Truth Social.

It sounds vain to fret over height in a political race, but DeSantis has reason to worry: Over the last century or so, taller candidates have tended to have an advantage in general elections — with the notable exceptions of former President Barack Obama, who is shorter than Mitt Romney, and President Joe Biden, who is shorter than Trump.

Three top experts in the field say the cowboy boot truthers might be onto something.

“I’ve dealt with these politicians many times,” says Zephan Parker, the bespoke bootmaker behind Houston’s popular Parker Boot Company, which, he says, has made height-increasing cowboy boots for a number of Texan politicians. (No, he won’t reveal any names.) “I’ve helped them with their lifts. [DeSantis] is wearing lifts; there’s no doubt.”

For Parker, there are two giveaways. At a DeSantis campaign event in Tampa, a photo was taken of him from his side, showing the governor in his black cowboy boots and navy worsted suit. Traditional Western boots are typically built with an elevated heel, ranging from 1 1/2” to 1 7/8”. DeSantis’ boots have a traditional Western silhouette, but, to Parker, the heels appear shorter. When you stick inserts into cowboy boots, the combination of the height-increasing lifts and the heels can “turn them into five-inch stilettos,” Parker says. “That’s too much for the common man. So on a ready-made boot, they’ll cut down the heel about half an inch to accommodate the lifts, which looks to be what happened here.” (Shaving down the heels does negate some of the height value of having lifts in the first place.)

The other giveaway, Parker says, is the boots’ tops (what most people would recognize as the shaft). Cowboy boots are made to fit snugly; on their website, Tecovas recommends getting boots sized so that you feel a rush of air leave the boot when your heels drop into place. But such a snug fit leaves little room for a wedge-shaped lift, so people who wear lifts often have to size up in width. This increases all the other measurements in tandem, including the circumference of the tops.

Looking at the photo of DeSantis at his Tampa campaign event, Parker points out how the tops are pushing against his trouser legs. “He looks like he’s wearing trousers with an eight-inch opening,” the bootmaker estimates, “which is plenty of room for a Western boot on a man of his proportions.” The fact that the tops push against the trouser legs suggests to Parker “the boots are bigger than intended, probably to accommodate his lifts.”…

DeSantis’ campaign denies the allegation that he’s wearing lifts. On Monday, DeSantis told podcast host Patrick Bet-David that his boots are “just standard, off-the-rack Lucchese boots.” In an email to POLITICO Magazine, DeSantis’ press secretary, Bryan Griffin, writes, “Considering the fact that Politico Magazine admittedly spent money to consult ‘boot experts’ to run this hit piece on DeSantis tells you all you need to know about their ‘journalism.’ The governor doesn’t pad his boots, but if he ever needed anything to line a pet cage or fold up and wedge under a table leg, that would be the highest and best use for Politico Magazine.” (To be clear,POLITICO Magazine did not compensate any of the boot makers quoted in this story.)

Walmart has unveiled over 100 revamped stores - as part of a $9 billion investment over the past two years to upgrade more than 1,400 of its 4,700 locations nationwide.

The chain is devoting more of its floor and retail space to online grocery pickup and delivery in its modernized stores, and has added new 'dollar shops' next to checkout.

Walmart pharmacies have been moved towards the front of the remodeled stores, the company said in a statement Monday, with new private screening rooms for pharmacist consultations and services.

The retail giant reopened 117 stores in 30 states at a cost of half a billion dollars, in a bid to boost sales.

Hunter Hart, senior vice president at Walmart Realty said: 'Each store is designed to deliver a more modern shopping experience and improve the lives of our associates and customers from the moment they step into the new space.'

Alongside fresh exteriors, signs, more shopping carts and more grab-and-go food and beverage options, other changes include touch-and-feel displays for home goods such as bedding.

The retailer said it was pulling big and bulky merchandise from boxes and onto corner displays so shoppers can imagine how it could fit into their home.

Digital touchpoints have also been placed throughout the store to provide more information on products and services, the company said.

Walmart also said customers will benefit from more checkout options, including both staffed registers and self-checkouts, in the new stores.

The retailer is making more room for online grocery pickup and delivery in the new stores, as its e-commerce business is growing.

As of figures from August, the company's US e-commerce sales grew 24 percent from the year before.

This is compared to growth of 6.4 percent for comparable in-store sales.

It comes after it emerged Walmart rival Target was testing a major self-checkout change at some of its stores in a bid to speed up the shopping process for customers.

The retailer is limiting the self-service lanes to customers who are purchasing 10 items or fewer - to try and reduce lengthy lines that can build up in store.

The company confirmed to DailyMail.com that it was testing the limit on items in order to reduce wait times and better understand guest preferences.

It did not confirm the specific Target locations where the trial was taking place, or whether the policy would later be rolled out nationwide.

Many big-name retailers are making changes to store layouts as companies across the US are battling against a rising wave of crime - forcing many outlets to close.

A recent report from the National Retail Federation said the sector is under an 'unprecedented' threat from crime and violence, with store owners fearing for their livelihoods as well as their safety.

It found that shrink, the total losses incurred by retailers, rose by $20 billion in a year to an eye-watering $112.2 billion in 2022.

And with up to 70 percent of shrink accounted for by theft, it means retailers lost approximately $78.4 billion to shoplifters.

With this, Biden reinforced the rhetorical framework that the former Israeli prime minister Naftali Bennett expressed, in typically unashamed terms, in an interview on Sky News on 12 October: “We’re fighting Nazis.”

A powerful state, with powerful allies and a powerful army, engaged in a retaliatory attack against stateless Palestinians under Israeli-settler colonial rule, military occupation and siege, is thus portrayed as powerless Jews in a struggle against Nazis. This historical context in no way justifies or excuses the mass murder of 1,500 Israelis on 7 October, which constitutes a war crime and crimes against humanity. This was the single largest massacre of Jews since the Holocaust, which deeply shocked Jews and many others around the world. The context of the Hamas attack on Israelis, however, is completely different from the context of the attack on Jews during the Holocaust. And without the historical context of Israeli settler colonialism since the 1948 Nakba, we cannot explain how we got here, nor imagine different futures; Biden offered us, instead, the decontextualized image of “pure, unadulterated evil.”

This weaponization of Holocaust memory by Israeli politicians runs deep. In 1982, for instance, in the context of Israel’s attack on Lebanon, the Israeli PM, Menachem Begin, compared the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat in Beirut to Adolf Hitler in his bunker in Berlin at the end of the war. Three decades later, in October 2015, Benjamin Netanyahu took this weaponization to new levels when he asserted in a speech to the World Zionist Congress in Jerusalem that the Palestinian grand mufti Haj Amin al-Husseini planted the idea to murder Jews in Hitler’s mind. And last Tuesday, Netanyahu described Hamas in a press conference, together with the German chancellor, Olaf Scholz, as the “new Nazis”.

The Israeli defense minister, Yoav Gallant said: “Gaza will not return to what it was before. We will eliminate everything.” Nissim Vaturi, a member of the Israeli parliament for the ruling Likud party, to take another example, called for “erasing the Gaza Strip from the face of the earth”. There are many other such expressions by Israeli politicians and senior army officers in the last few weeks. The fantasy of “fighting Nazis” drives such explicit language, because the image of Nazis is one of “pure, unadulterated evil”, which removes all laws and restrictions in the fight against it. Perpetrators of genocide always see their victims as evil and themselves as righteous. This is, indeed, how Nazis saw Jews.

Biden’s words constitute therefore a textbook use of the Holocaust not in order to stand with powerless people facing the prospect of genocidal violence, but to support and justify an extremely violent attack by a powerful state and, at the same time, distort this reality. But we see the reality in front of our eyes: since the start of Israeli mass violence on 7 October, the number of Palestinians killed in Gaza has surpassed 4,650, a third of them children, with more than 15,000 injured and over a million people displaced.

Israel has also escalated the violence against Palestinians under occupation in the West Bank, including the killing of more than 95 people and an intensification of expulsions, including the destruction of whole communities. Hamas wields no power in the West Bank, but the reality that we can all see means little for Israelis fighting, in their minds, Nazis.

We have seen this sort of use of Holocaust memory in another case of mass violence not too long ago. On 24 January 2020, the Russian president Vladimir Putin was invited to speak at the fifth World Holocaust Forum at Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, to mark 75 years to the liberation of Auschwitz by Soviet forces. In his speech, Putin presented a distorted history of the second world war and the Holocaust, including distorted maps, to fit a Russian narrative that erased the Nazi-Soviet alliance in the destruction of Poland in 1939 and presented Ukrainians, Latvians and Lithuanians primarily as Nazi collaborators.

Putin used precisely this weaponization of Holocaust history when he launched his assault on Ukraine in February last year, explaining it as a campaign of “denazification”. Explicit and unashamed, just like Bennett. Putin thus used the Holocaust to create a world turned upside down: Ukrainians facing a brutal and unprovoked Russian attack became Nazis.

The history of the Holocaust, however, does offer lessons for the current bloodshed.

For one, it reminds us to center the voices and perspectives of those facing state violence and genocide. And the most urgent thing that Palestinians in Gaza now need is a ceasefire and an end to the Israeli bombing campaign.
