The second GOP presidential debate was dominated by candidates and moderators bickering and talking over one another, while viewers criticized the hosts for asking “offensively stupid” questions rather than focusing on substance that Republicans care about.

The debate, hosted by Fox Business and Univision, an American Spanish-language network, and located at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California, featured seven of the GOP Presidential candidates. Early in the evening, candidates attacked rising star Vivek Ramaswamy, emphasized the border crisis and called out former President Donald Trump for skipping yet another debate while working to manage questions from moderators that some called “idiotic” and “disrespectful.”

But one theme that persisted was dissatisfaction with the moderators, whose questions ranged from pressing Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis about allegedly racist slavery curriculum to asking former Vice President Mike Pence about hate crimes against gay people.

The debate wasmoderated by Fox Business host Stuart Varney and Fox News Channel host Dana Perino, as well as Univision anchor Ilia Calderón, who each tried unsuccessfully to enforce time limits and keep the candidates from cutting each other off.

After Republican North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum tried to ask the moderators to return to a question about artificial intelligence,Perino threatened to cut the candidate’s micif he kept the debate from moving forward.

“I am the only person on the stage that has a career in technology,” Burgum interjected.

“Sir, we’ll have to cut your mic, and I don’t want to do that. I don’t,” Perino responded.

The debate often focused around one leading candidate not on the stage, former President Donald Trump. The frontrunner opted to head to Detroit, Michigan, to address striking members of the United Auto Workers (UAW) a day after President Joe Biden visited the picket line to show his solidarity with workers who are demanding around a 40% raise and a shorter work week.

As of Wednesday, Trump led all GOP presidential candidates at 54% with DeSantis the next closest at nearly 14%, according to FiveThirtyEight.

“He should be on this stage tonight,” DeSantis said, taking his first of several explicit hits at Trump throughout the night. “He owes it to you to defend his record where they added $7.8 trillion to the debt. That set the stage for the inflation we have now.”

When asked about how he would win over pro-choice voters, DeSantis took a shot at Trump, who recently came under fire after he called Florida’s six-week abortion ban a “terrible mistake” in an NBC News interview.

Former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie did not hesitate to call out Trump for skipping the second debate, using a question posed by Fox News Dana Perino about who should be “voted” out of the race to suggest that the former president no longer deserves to run. The question was called “disrespectful” by DeSantis before Christie began his response.

Throughout the debate, GOP Presidentialcandidates continued to turn unrelated questions back to the immigration crisisin an effort to highlight how they would secure the border.

Former South Carolina Governor and U.N. Ambassador Nikki Haley called for the U.S. to abandon practices of “catch and release” instead of encouraging the country to “catch and deport” migrants coming through the southern border.

“Only when we fix the immigration system, only when we get the borders secure should we ever put any more money into this,” Haley said, referencing the potential government shutdown on Saturday.

Touting his priority to secure the border, DeSantis gave an anecdote about his time in California ahead of the debate, recalling how he and his wife had met and chatted with residents of the state who had been mugged as crime continues to rise in sanctuary cities.

Ramaswamy, who surged into the spotlight during the first presidential debate, was attacked throughout the night by his competitors. Most notably, South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott and Pence poked fun at the young businessman’s connection to China.

“I’m glad Vivek pulled out of his business deal in 2018 in China,” Pence said. “That must have been about the time he decided to start voting in presidential elections.”

Scott also took aim at Haley, criticizing her for increasing the gas tax while governor and for purchasing $50,000 dollars worth of curtains as ambassador.

An hour into the event, prominent conservative commentatorMegyn Kelly summed it up with one question: “Is this an MSNBC debate?”..

House Kills Rep. Gaetz’s Amendment to Ban Transfer of Cluster Bombs

The amendment received support from 85 Republicans and 75 Democrats

The House on Wednesday night voted down an amendment to the Pentagon appropriations bill introduced by Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-FL) that would have banned the transfer of civilian-killing cluster bombs to other countries.

The amendment failed in a vote of 160-269, with only 85 Republicans and 75 Democrats supporting the measure.

Cluster bombs spread small submunitions, known as bomblets, over a large area. They are so hazardous to civilians because many of the submunitions do not explode on impact and can be found years or decades later, often by children. Due to their indiscriminate nature, cluster bombs are banned by over 100 countries.

The vote on Gaetz’s amendment came after the Biden administration announced a weapons package for Ukraine that included the second tranche of cluster bombs in the form of 155mm artillery shells. The administration first shipped cluster bombs to Ukraine in July. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has claimed that without the widely-banned munitions, Ukraine would be “defenseless.”

According to recent media reports, the administration has also agreed to provide Ukraine with Army Tactical Missile Systems (ATACMS) that will be armed with cluster munitions. The provision would be a huge escalation as the ATACMS have a range of up to 190 miles, meaning Ukraine could use them to fire cluster bombs into Russian territory.

The House also voted down two amendments aimed at reducing US support for the proxy war in Ukraine. One amendment, introduced by Rep. Andy Biggs (R-AZ), to strip $300 million in military aid for Ukraine included in the Pentagon appropriations bill was rejected in a vote of 104-330 and only received support from Republicans.

Another amendment introduced by Gaetz would have cut off military support for Ukraine altogether. It failed in a vote of 93-339 and also only received support from Republicans.

Robert Fico has vowed to cut off Slovakia’s aid to Ukraine if elected

Robert Fico’s Slovak Social Democracy is set to emerge as the largest party in a snap election on Saturday. Fico has called for a ceasefire in Ukraine and promised that not “a single round” of ammunition would be sent to Kiev if he were prime minister.

Fico’s party is currently leading with 20% of the vote, according to an aggregate of recent polls compiled by Politico. The pro-Western Progressive Slovakia party is in second place with 18%, while the Voice – Social Democracy party, a potential coalition partner for Fico’s Slovak Social Democracy is in third place with 13%. No other faction is polling above single digits.

The prospect of a Fico-led government has already set alarm bells ringing in the EU, where officials in Brussels fear he could veto future military aid to Ukraine and vote against additional anti-Russia sanctions packages.

Fico was Slovak prime minister from 2006 to 2010, and again from 2012 to 2018. He was forced to resign after one of his assistants was linked to the murder of investigative journalist Jan Kuciak. Slovakia is currently run by a government of unelected technocrats, which along with the previous liberal cabinet has given significant military support to Kiev.

Slovakia has sent Ukraine armored personnel carriers, howitzers, and its entire fleet of Soviet-era MiG-29 fighter jets. Fico has publicly condemned the EU’s sanctions on Russia, and blamed the conflict in Ukraine on “Ukrainian Nazis and fascists [who] started murdering Russian citizens in Donetsk and Lugansk” in 2014.

“We are a peaceful country,” he declared at a rally last week, adding: “we will not send a single round [of ammunition] to Ukraine.”

“They will have to sit down anyway and find an agreement,” he said of Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky. “Russia will never leave Crimea, never leave the territories that it controls.”

With Fico promising an about-face on Slovakia’s pro-Ukraine policy, Russia’s Foreign Intelligence Service (SVR) warned on Thursday that the US is preparing to meddle in Saturday’s election. “The US State Department sent instructions to several of its European allies to conduct targeted work with local political and business circles,” the SVR stated, noting thatWashington has sanctioned the use of bribery, blackmail, and threats to prevent Fico from winning.

Should Progressive Slovakia leader Michal Simecka emerge victorious, theSVR claimed that he has already been instructed by the US to form a “cabinet completely loyal to Washington.”

Newsom signs gun laws that add new taxes and limit where owners can carry firearms

California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed several gun-control measures on Tuesday, including a bill that tightens the state’s concealed-carry rules and another that imposes a new tax on firearm and ammunition sales.

During a signing ceremony in Sacramento alongside lawmakers and gun-control advocates, Newsom said California would push back on legal efforts to dismantle its firearms laws and maintain its position as a national gun-control leader, but called for greater federal action.

“We have a responsibility to do more and continue to lead in that conversation,” Newsom said. “I think we need to be screaming louder about this.”

“I’m celebratory, because I’m proud that we were able to sign these bills,” Newsom added, “but it’s going to require a national construct, a national frame in order to ultimately address this.”

The laws build on Newsom’s resolution that the Legislature passed earlier this month calling for a constitutional convention of the states to consider a new amendment on gun control.

California already has some of the strongest firearm restrictions in the country, each year earning top marks from gun-control advocacy organizations such as the Giffords Law Center. Nonetheless, guns have contributed to an uptick in California’s violent crime rates over the last several years, according to an analysis by the nonpartisan Public Policy Institute of California.

Also hanging over the celebration were the two mass shootings at the start of the year in Monterey Park and Half Moon Bay that killed 18 people and increased pressure for additional legislation to regulate firearms.

Of the more than 20 bills Newsom signed, two stand out as especially significant.

Senate Bill 2 is California’s response to the U.S. Supreme Court ruling in New York State Rifle & Pistol Assn. vs. Bruen last year, when the 6-3 conservative majority justices struck down restrictive concealed-carry laws as unconstitutional.

The decision forced Newsom, Atty. Gen. Rob Bonta and Democratic lawmakers, including state Sen. Anthony Portantino (D-Burbank), to write legislation that would scrap California’s more subjective law that allowed local authorities to decide who can get a concealed-carry permit and replace it with a policy that largely guarantees a license once application criteria is met.

Despite the changes, the new law still seriously limits who can obtain a license to carry a concealed firearm and is already facing a legal challenge from gun-rights advocates.

It details more than two dozen “sensitive places” that are off-limits to firearms, such as child care centers and schools, public transit, banks, museums, zoos, medical facilities, parks, playgrounds and bars. The bill also includes a controversial provision that renders commercial businesses automatically gun-free zones unless the owner explicitly says otherwise.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd provides an update about a seven-day-long multi-agency undercover operation focused on human trafficking, during which 219 arrests were made of suspects who solicited prostitutes and those who offered to commit prostitution, and other suspects who profited from or aided & abetted prostitution.

More than 200 people face charges relating to a week-long, multi-agency human trafficking investigation in Polk County, Sheriff Grady Judd said Thursday.

Among those arrests, two people were charged with human trafficking. More than 20 people who were victims of human trafficking were found, as well, the sheriff's office said.

"Sometimes we work an entire operation without being able to identify the human trafficker because the ladies are scared to death of them," Judd said. "So we think it's a big deal that we actually were able to charge criminally two with human trafficking and two others are under investigation."

Several people face charges of soliciting a prostitute, including a Polk County School athletic director and coach identified as Russell Rodgers, and several people employed by Disney.

Rogers is employed at Real Academy's Auburndale campus and has been with the school since 2017, according to the Polk County School District. Leaders say he was first hired in 2013.

While still listed as an employee, the school district indicated it is working toward terminating Rogers' employment.

"We’re disappointed to learn that one of our employees was engaging in this kind of behavior," Polk County Schools said in a statement. "Part of being an educator is understanding that you are held to a higher standard for your actions in the classroom, as well as the community.

"These charges don’t involve students, and Rogers was not on duty as a teacher, but this kind of conduct still has no place in our school system."

Judd said 30-year-old Freddy Escalona, from Chicago, Illinois, was charged with human trafficking and deriving proceeds from prostitution. According to the sheriff's office, Escalona loaned a woman about $2,200 so she could fix her car.

To pay back the loan, Escalona reportedly made the woman prostitute herself while he took a majority of those earnings for himself. Judd said the amount of money Escalona got from the woman's exploitation far exceeded the amount he loaned her in the beginning.

When Escalona was arrested, detectives said he had "several females that he worked" who paid him to take them places and "keep them safe." Additional charges are pending as the investigation continues, the sheriff's office said.

A woman, 36-year-old Maria Guzman of Orlando, was also charged with human trafficking and deriving proceeds. According to Judd, Guzman trafficked two victims from an Orlando hotel. She reportedly set up their "dates" and profited from the money they earned.

Judd added two other people may soon also face human trafficking charges from this undercover operation, pending additional investigation.

In total, 219 people were arrested in connection to the undercover human trafficking operation. A total of 83 people were arrested for soliciting a prostitute and traveling to the undercover location for sex. Seventeen additional people were arrested and of those, five people were either profiting from prostitution or aiding and abetting prostitutes. Eight people drove prostitutes to the undercover location.

Judd added several children were also turned over to the Florida Department of Children and Families (DCF) during the investigation. Two women, arrested for prostitution, reportedly brought a 14-month-old baby with them to meet for paid sex. While one was having sex, the other would watch the baby, Judd said.

Another man arrested for solicitation reportedly left his 1-year-old at home in order to meet for sex. Judd said the man said the baby wasn't really alone because "the dog was watching the baby."

Ukrainian fighters break humanitarian truce

Kiev’s forces opened fire on Russian troops despite having previously agreed to a temporary ceasefire, an RT correspondent has reported

Russian and Ukrainian forces near the city of Kremennaya in Russia’s Lugansk People’s Republic managed to establish a temporary humanitarian truce, only to see it broken by the Ukrainian side, RT correspondent Murad Gazdiev reported on Wednesday.

Writing on Telegram, Gazdiev said thatbrigade leaders from both sides agreed to a ceasefire that would last from 9am to 7pm to allow both forces to collect the bodiesof the dead that had been left in neutral ground.

Gazdiev reported that hostilities did in fact cease initially. However, Ukrainian troops then began dragging trees and logs to their trenches and fortifying their positions.Approximately 40 minutes later, as soon as Russian evacuation groups moved out, the Ukrainian forces, sitting in their fortified trenches, opened fire using howitzers and mortars.

The results of the incident have not been disclosed, but other reports from the area on Wednesday suggested that a group of Ukrainian troops had later surrendered to Russian forces.

War reporter Mikhail Andronik shared videos purporting to show a Ukrainian soldier coming out onto a road bearing a light cloth. That was after he contacted the Russian side using an open radio channel. Soon after, two other fighters also came out and surrendered their weapons, as well as several crates of ammunition. One of the weapons, according to the correspondent, was a Western machine gun.

Another report by retired LPR lieutenant colonel Andrey Marochko also claimed the Ukrainian military near Svatovo-Kremennaya had requested an emergency evacuation using air ambulances from the area. The military expert suggested that the actions of the Ukrainian forces indicated they were trying to evacuate a wounded high-ranking supervisor or a senior commanding officer.

The Russian Defense Ministry has yet to confirm or deny the reports. However, in its daily update on Wednesday, it stated that Kiev’s forces had lost a total of up to 55 servicemen, two armored fighting vehicles, two cars, as well as two howitzers in the Krasnoliman direction.

China-Based Hackers Accessed 60K U.S. State Dept Emails In Microsoft Breach, Senate Staffer Says

Tens of thousands of U.S. State Department emails were stolen by a group of China-based hackers who breached Microsoft’s email platform earlier this year, according to a Senate staffer.

The anonymous staffer, who works for Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO), told Reuters that State Department IT officials briefed the U.S. lawmakers on Wednesday that 60,000 emails were stolen from ten different accounts — all directly working on East Asia and the Pacific.

In June, Chinese Communist Party-affiliated hackers subverted Microsoft’s system, giving them access to multiple U.S. agencies that deal with China ahead of Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s trip to Beijing.

Wang Wenbin, a Chinese foreign ministry spokesman, reportedly called the accusation “disinformation” to distract from the U.S. committing cyber espionage against China.

“No matter which agency issued this information, it will never change the fact that the United States is the world’s largest hacker empire conducting the most cyber theft,” Wenbin said, according to The Associated Press.

News of the hacking first became public in July, prompting the U.S. agencies to take immediate action to counter China’s brazen and frequent acts of cyber-espionage on critical infrastructure to acquire sensitive information.

The Wall Street Journal reported that U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo and other senior officials at the State Department were victims of a Chinese hacking campaign that gained access to email accounts from roughly two dozen organizations that began on May 15 and went undetected until June 16.

Microsoft disclosed the hack in a blog post, blaming the breach on a state-backed, espionage-focused Chinese hacking group “known to target government agencies in Western Europe” known as Storm-0558. The group had begun accessing email accounts in May, affecting about 25 organizations, including government agencies and other consumer accounts likely associated with the agencies.

Schmitt told Reuters in a statement shared by the staffer following the briefing on Wednesday that the federal government should “take a hard look” at relying on a single IT vendor as “a potential weak point.”

“We need to harden our defenses against these types of cyberattacks and intrusions in the future,” Schmitt said.

Schmitt joined over a dozen other senators earlier this year, sending a bipartisan letter to State Department Chief Information Officer Kelly Fletcher to determine the extent of the hacker’s breach of the unclassified email server preceding Blinken’s trip to China.

Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency officials warned in a joint statement with international and domestic intelligence services that China poses a risk to American intellectual property.

“For years, China has conducted aggressive cyber operations to steal intellectual property and sensitive data from organizations around the globe,” CISA Director Jen Easterly said in a statement.

Earlier this month, the Pentagon released a new cyber strategy report warning that China and Russia are prepared to launch destructive cyber attacks on U.S. critical infrastructure to “sow chaos and hinder military mobilization” in the event of war breaking out.

The Chinese Communist Party sees superiority in cyberspace as core to its theories of victory, the report reads, adding that it has engaged in espionage and theft that compromised key defense networks and broader U.S. critical infrastructure.

Microsoft reportedly said earlier this year that state-backed Chinese hackers were targeting U.S. critical infrastructure to potentially disrupt communications between the U.S. and Asia during future crises.
