Secret Service Denies FOIA Request To Provide List Potentially Linked To Cocaine Incident

The U.S. Secret Service has refused to provide The Heritage Foundation with a list of individuals who may have been involved in the White House cocaine incident, claiming such records are outside its authority.

After the Secret Service closed the investigation into the cocaine issue in mid-July, the Heritage Foundation filed a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request seeking the list of hundreds of individuals who may have accessed the area where the substance was found. In a July 25 letter (pdf) from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the agency denied the request.

“As your request seeks records reflecting visitors or related information concerning the Office of the President, please be advised that these records are not Secret Service agency records subject to the FOIA.”

“Rather, these records are governed by the Presidential Records Act … and remain under the exclusive legal custody and control of the White House,” the letter argued.

The DHS’ response to the FOIA request made The Daily Signal, a news outlet of the Heritage Foundation, suggest that the Secret Service may have “never created such a list in the first place.”

Steve Bradbury, a distinguished fellow at the thinktank, dismissed the DHS arguments for not turning over the visitor list, pointing to the legal difference between an agency record and presidential record.

The distinction is usually based on “who generates the record and whose business the record reflects,” he told the outlet. “If it’s an agency record, it’s subject to FOIA. If it’s a White House record, it’s covered by the Presidential Records Act.”

Mr. Bradbury said that the key question is whether the Secret Service used the White House logs to create its own new record.

If the Secret Service did use the White House records to create a “new document on its systems, which was its own list of suspects that it generated, that new document should” come under FOIA, he said.

However if the Secret Service did not create a new document, it would suggest that the agency did not take the investigation seriously, Mr. Bradbury suggested. The Heritage Foundation intends to appeal the rejection.

This isn’t the first time that the Secret Service has turned down a FOIA request on the White House cocaine issue.

Jason Leopold, an investigative reporter at Bloomberg, had earlier asked for information like emails, text messages, suspicious activity reporting, intelligence bulletins, letters, directives, and other such material referencing the cocaine found at the White House.

Russian defense chief provides update on Ukrainian losses

Kiev lost nearly 21,000 troops in July alone, Sergey Shoigu has estimated

Russian forces have stopped Ukraine’s much-hyped counteroffensive dead in its tracks, inflicting tens of thousands of casualties on Kiev’s troops, Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said on Monday.

Speaking at a conference attended by senior military commanders, Shoigu noted that Kiev “is desperately throwing new forces in a bid to storm our positions” but the Russian military thwarted all breakthrough attempts by relying on well-built and organized defenses, adding that the endurance of military personnel played an instrumental role in the success.

As a result, in July, Ukraine lost 20,824 service members and 2,227 units of military equipment, including 10 German-supplied Leopard tanks, 11 US-made Bradley infantry fighting vehicles, and 50 self-propelled guns from several Western countries, the minister stated.

According to Shoigu, on July 26 and 27 alone Ukraine lost more than 400 service members and 31 tanks and other heavy weaponry near the settlement of Rabotino in Russia’s Zaporozhye Region. Last week, a video surfaced on social media purporting to show a “graveyard” of Bradleys filmed at the same location.

“It is obvious that the Western-supplied weapons are failing to bring success on the battlefield and only prolong the military conflict,” Shoigu said.

Short of any combat accomplishments, “the Kiev regime, with the support of its Western sponsors, is now focused on carrying out terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure” in Russian cities, Shoigu noted, adding that Moscow has introduced additional security measures and ramped up attacks on Ukrainian military facilities.

Kiev launched its much-anticipated counteroffensive against Russian defenses in the early days of June, but failed to gain any ground, according to the Defense Ministry in Moscow. Ukrainian officials have attributed the difficulties to delays in Western arms shipments, extensive minefields, lack of air support and stiff Russian resistance.

Meanwhile, several media reports have suggested that Kiev’s Western allies have grown “alarmed” at the slow progress on the battlefield, while being “jolted” by Ukrainian losses in armor. In addition, a Financial Times report from late June suggested that future Western support would depend on the results of the counteroffensive, which have so far been underwhelming.

House Judiciary Committee Members Call on Lawmakers to Return to Washington – Demand Immediate Emergency Hearings on DOJ’s Interference with Congressional Oversight

In response to Saturday’s request by the U.S. Attorney’s Office for Devon Archer to report to prison, Rep. Matt Gaetz is demanding lawmakers return to Washington, D.C. He is calling for immediate emergency hearings concerning alleged Department of Justice (DOJ) interference with Congressional Oversight.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York had asked Judge Ronnie Abrams to schedule a reporting date for Devon Archer, following a decision by the Second Circuit Court of Appeals to uphold his one-year sentence.

Archer was found guilty of two felony charges in his involvement in a scheme to defraud the Wakpamni Lake Community Corporation of the Oglala Sioux Tribe.

Assistant U.S. attorney Negar Tekeei revealed in a one-page letter that the prosecutors had previously asked Matthew Schwartz, Archer’s attorney, to suggest a reporting date. However, Schwartz deemed this as “premature,” citing Archer’s contemplation of additional appeals and concerns about an “error” in the sentencing process.

Five members of the House Judiciary Committee — Reps. Matt Gaetz (R-FL), Mike Johnson (R-LA), Chip Roy (R-TX), Harriet Hageman (R-WY), and Rep. Dan Bishop (R-NC) — are calling for immediate emergency hearings on the DOJ’s alleged interference with Congressional Oversight.

They have expressed readiness to return to Washington to hold the DOJ accountable for obstruction of a congressional investigation.

Gaetz took to Twitter stating, “If Devin Archer isn’t in the witness chair Monday, we better haul every SOB at the DOJ before congress EVERY DAY to make them pay for this…Archer is in that chair or Garland is. Yield me the time and let me ask the questions. I’ll handle it from there.”

Eurostar launches world’s first walk-through biometric corridor for rail travel

Is this the future of borders?

The first-ever biometric corridor for train travel opened today at Eurostar’s London terminal.

The system, developed by British tech firm iProov, replaces border checks with a facial verification checkpoint that you just walk straight past.

Before travel, the passenger downloads the app, authenticates their ID, scans their face, and links their ticket. On arrival at St Pancras Station, they stroll through a dedicated lane for the tech — dubbed SmartCheck — which verifies their entry.

The system lets users skip ticket gates and manual border control in the UK. After baggage inspection and a passport check at the French border, they’re free to board the train.

With no fiddly paper documents, prying British sentries, or protracted camera scans, SmartCheck promises shorter queues and smoother throughput. Initially, the system will only be available for Eurostar’s Business Premier and Carte Blanche passengers. But the company aims to extend the service to all customers and — perhaps — more borders.

The CEO of Eurostar, Gwendoline Cazenave, told TNW that she plans to provide a launchpad for the tech.

“We wanted to show that seamless, automated cross-borders are not just science fiction — they’re now a reality,” she said.

SmartCheck is years in the making. In 2020, the UK’s Department for Transport awarded iProov part of a £9.4m fund for innovative rail projects, which was used to develop the biometric system. The next year, live trials of the contactless service began at Eurostar.

“In the original trial we had people stopping — and people don’t like to stop,” said Dominic Forrest, CTO at iProov. “That’s when we decided to shoot for the free-flow experience.”

A day before the launch, TNW trialled the tech. Aside from some issues with mobile internet in the station, the experience was seamless.

After entering the biometric lane, we strolled straight past the facial verification checkpoint. From the other side, we could see the system uses a commercial iPad. The speed and accuracy, says Forrest, derive from the processing power and face-matching algorithms that run on the device.

“T​​his is not surveillance. Users can choose whether to enrol or not.

Similar tech has been tested at airports, but this is the first deployment at a train station. According to iProov CEO Andrew Bud, rail travel presents extra challenges for biometric corridors.

“The controls are different, the throughput is different, and the way that information flows is very, very different,” he said.

The space is also different. At peak levels, around 11 million annual Eurostar customers pass through an area the size of three tennis courts — which means efficient checks are vital.

Another difference is the level of surveillance. According to Bud, the biometric systems in airports are more intrusive than SmartCheck.

“The information all flows through the airport backbone, so your face and identity data is controlled by the airlines and the facial verification system in the airport,” Bud said. “In this case, it’s sitting in your phone.”

Bud is keen to address concerns about surveillance. According to iProov, all personal data is stored securely on the user’s smartphone and encrypted during operation. Once verified, the information is only shared with the ticket gate and passport control services. After a maximum of 48 hours, it’s deleted from these systems.

David Barnea visit seen as part of Biden administration’s ‘full-bore effort’ to reach Jerusalem-Riyadh deal, which will reportedly require Israeli concessions to Palestinians

Mossad chief David Barnea visited the White House earlier this month for “secret” talks about a potential normalization deal between Israel and Saudi Arabia, according to a report Monday.

Axios cited two US sources who said Barnea met in the White House with US National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan as well as Brett McGurk, the White House coordinator for the Middle East, and Amos Hochstein, US President Joe Biden’s senior adviser on energy and infrastructure.

Sullivan and McGurk both traveled to Saudi Arabia in the period following their purported meetings with Barnea.

Barnea also reportedly met during his trip with CIA director Bill Burns. The CIA had no comment on the report.

“We continue to support for normalization with Israel, including with Saudi Arabia, and obviously continue to talk to our regional partners about how more progress can be made,” a White House National Security Council spokesperson said when asked to comment on the reported Barnea-Sullivan meeting.

According to numerous reports on a potential normalization deal in recent weeks, Riyadh is seeking a significant defense and security pact with the United States, Israeli concessions to the Palestinians, and a civilian nuclear program, a demand long opposed by Washington and Jerusalem.

But on Monday, National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said Israel’s approval would not be required. “Dozens of countries operate projects with civilian nuclear cores, and with nuclear endeavors for energy, this is not something that endangers them nor their neighbors,” he told public broadcaster Kan, adding that the issue would be between Washington and Riyadh.

“Israel will not give in to anything that will erode its security,” said Hanegbi.

Judicial Watch Files Briefs in the U.S. Supreme for Review of Ninth Circuit Decisions Penalizing Group for Exposing Sales of Fetal Body Parts

Judicial Watch announced today that it filed two amicus curiae (friend of the court) briefs in the U.S. Supreme Court on behalf of The Center for Medical Progress (CMP) and its founder David Daleiden, one of which asks for review of the Ninth Circuit Court’s affirmation of a monetary award against CMP (Center for Medical Progress et al. v Planned Parent Hood et al. (22-1168)), the other asks for review of an injunction granted to the National Abortion Federation that prevents CMP from publishing more abortion-related videos (Center for Medical Progress et al. v National Abortion Federation (22-1135)).

In 2015, The Center for Medical Progress released videos that exposed employees of Planned Parenthood engaging in negotiations for the sale of fetal tissue and body parts for use in medical research.

On October 21, 2022, the United States Ninth Circuit affirmed most of a 2019 lower court jury verdict that declared that a series of undercover videos produced by The Center for Medical Progress harmed Planned Parenthood, and that CMP was not protected by the First Amendment, requiring CMP to pay millions in damages to Planned Parenthood.

The Judicial Watch brief highlights how the lower court’s awarding of monetary damages for these accurate videos is a fundamental threat to First Amendment protections.

Separately, in August 2022, the Ninth Circuit affirmed the ruling of a judge in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California that granted National Abortion Federation a permanent injunction barring The Center for Medical Progress from releasing recordings and materials obtained at National Abortion Federation’s meetings. The injunction also forbids CMP from talking about the videos or using them in the defense of CMP’s Founder and President David Daleiden in his criminal case.

Influential Albanian Politician Led Organized Crime Group in Australia, Intelligence Reports Claim

Australia’s top criminal intelligence agency suspected Tom Doshi, a leading Albanian businessman and politician with ties to the prime minister, of leading a criminal group in the country that perpetrates immigration fraud, drug trafficking, and money laundering.

Confidential intelligence documents from Australia claimed that Tom Doshi has headed an organized criminal group consisting largely of members of his family.

His group, the reports say, forms part of a wider network that has exploited systemic weaknesses in Australia’s immigration system to get its Albanian members into Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and New South Wales.

According to investigators, these clan-based Albanian gangs specialize in criminal activities like illegal cannabis cultivation, weapons, and drug trafficking.

Tom Doshi, a powerful Albanian businessman and politician tied to the country’s prime minister, is suspected of leading an organized criminal group implicated in money laundering, drug trafficking, and other offenses in Australia, according to confidential intelligence assessments.

This clan is among others from Shkodër, a county in northwest Albania, that have systematically abused Australia’s immigration system to build “an entire Albanian Organized Crime criminal structure” across South Australia, according to the reports.

The documents, produced by the Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission (ACIC) and circulated to domestic and foreign police agencies, draw on numerous reports from local police forces and information from foreign law enforcement bodies. They were seen by reporters from OCCRP and Australia’s The Age and Sydney Morning Herald newspapers.

The files describe how, since 2000, Albanian clans have used identity fraud and familial links to migration agents to move their people into Australia, setting up cells in Adelaide, Melbourne, Perth, and elsewhere.

Doshi is described in the files as the “head” of a syndicate “principally consisting of his extended family.” Though the documents contain no details about his specific activities, they note that eight of his relatives have been “implicated” in “drug and money laundering investigations,” in some cases as “primary targets.” His relatives are said in the reports to have gained Australian visas using spurious documentation. One is facing drug trafficking charges.

Doshi, who spent years in both countries, has not been charged with any crimes in Australia. In his homeland, he had built a business empire that has benefited extensively from state contracts. He was designated persona non grata by the United States in 2018 for “involvement in significant corruption” and forced out of his parliamentary seat in 2021 following years of high-profile scandals. His alleged involvement in the Australian criminal network has never been previously revealed.

Hunter's Biden's former friend and business partner Devon Archer claimed to the House Oversight Committee on Monday that the president and first son discussed foreign business deals over 20 times.

Rep. Dan Goldman - lead counsel on the first Trump impeachment and the only Democrat present in the room of the testimony - told reporters that Archer 'indicated that Hunter spoke to his father every day, and approximately 20 times over the course of a 10 year relationship, Hunter may have put his father on the phone with any number of different people, and they never once spoke about any business dealings.

Goldman claimed Archer had said Joe and Hunter's business partners only exchanged 'niceties' like talking about 'the weather, "what's going on?"'

But Republicans had a different retelling of Archer's account.

Oversight member Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene told DailyMail.com in an interview Archer testified that 'the Bidens were in the actual business of influence peddling.'

'It's extremely damning,' she said, claiming that the 20 phone conversations Archer referred to were directly about business deals.

'We have Devon Archer coming out and telling the truth that Hunter Biden and Joe Biden spoke over 20 times about his business deals, not about the weather, not about what was for lunch about his business deals,' she said.

Judiciary Chairman and Oversight member Jim Jordan, who was in the room for the deposition, told reporters that Archer had provided the committee with new information and called the meeting 'very productive.'

Greene, who communicates regularly with Speaker Kevin McCarthy, said she believed Archer's testimony could be what 'moves the needle' on the potential Biden impeachment inquiry.

She said that at last week's weekly meeting of the Republican conference, McCarthy told his members: 'when it's time to vote for this, I want you to be with me on this one.'

'We have to have 218 Republicans to vote for it,' Greene said. 'And there's been some that just aren't there yet, but in my opinion, the information that's coming out today could really push many of them to get to "yes."'

Donning a devil-may-care grin, Archer sauntered in 15 minutes late to his 10 a.m. deposition and declined to comment on reporters' shouted questions.

Archer is expected to give his account of the Biden family business dealings for four to five hours behind closed doors - and to unmask Joe as the 'big guy' referred to in emails and calls between Hunter and foreign associates.

He appeared relaxed despite his impending prison sentence.

Archer arrived to speak to investigators as unearthed a laundry list of foreign influence violations Hunter could be charged with after his plea deal dramatically fell apart last week.

Archer's testimony also comes after a back-and-forth with the Department of Justice claiming it was not trying to have Archer jailed before his deposition over an unrelated fraud conviction.

The DOJ had sent a letter on July 29th to a New York judge calling for Archer's sentencing to be expedited.

Republicans claim the move by DOJ was an attempt to 'intimidate' Archer, who they view as being central to providing information that is critical to their ongoing investigation into whether Joe Biden was involved in his son's foreign business deals.

DOJ seemingly walked back their request in a fresh Sunday filing, telling District Judge Abrams that they do not wish to see Archer imprisoned before he testifies before Congress on Monday on the Biden's business schemes.

'To be clear, the Government does not request (and has never requested) that the defendant [Archer] surrender before his Congressional testimony,' the letter read.

For the avoidance of all doubt, the Government requests that any surrender date, should the Court order one, be scheduled to occur after the defendant's Congressional testimony is completed.'

Oversight Chairman James Comer said Sunday that the DOJ's July 29 letter to Abrams was an attempt to 'intimidate' the witness he says is key to getting to the bottom of the president's son's shady overseas business deals.

DailyMail.com reported exclusively this week that Archer is 'in hiding' after receiving 'threats' leading up to his bombshell testimony.

Archer, 48, was subpoenaed on June 12 by the House Oversight Committee, which is investigating Hunter's businesses and whether he and other members of the Biden family improperly traded on their connections.

It is unclear the motivation behind Archer's decision to testify on Monday. He previously cancelled on the committee at least three times in recent weeks.

Chairman Comer told Fox News' Larry Kudlow that Archer is appearing before his committee now because after he was subpoenaed, he 'doesn't have a whole lot of options.'

He said Republicans planned to hold him in contempt if he did not comply with the subpoena, which doesn't 'look good on your resume.'

'At the end of the day, I think that Archer wants to do the right thing,' he said. 'I think he wants to set the record straight and he is going to have an opportunity to do that.'

But Archer is facing legal troubles of his own and is expected to go to prison shortly.
