Ballots were reported missing in one New Jersey county after they were shuttled between locations amid problems with several voting machines.

Four voting districts' ballots, which have vanished, were last accounted for being shuttled from the voting place to the election board, according to the New Jersey Globe. Records show that 4,046 voters are spread across the four districts. Paper ballots had to be used after a software glitch rendered the Dominion electronic voting machines unusable. Authorities are assuring the public that they are doing everything in their power to remedy the situation.

DOMINION VOTING MACHINES STOP WORKING IN NEW JERSEY COUNTY

“We’re working with the county, which is in charge of our elections, but please know we will not rest until we get to the bottom of this unconscionable mishap, and we will not consider the 2022 election over in Robbinsville until every single ballot is counted and done so securely,” said Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried.

“The fundamentals of democracy is that every vote would be counted,” he added. “Clearly, this has yet to happen in Robbinsville, as approximately 11% of our residents’ votes have yet to be safely delivered and tallied.”

The ballots of one of the four districts were documented as having arrived at the Board of Elections office, while records show the office never received those of the three others. The missing ballots of the former could have been misplaced at the office, but no clues remain as to the latter.

The missing ballots have the capability to decide several local elections, which have close margins.

Election officials can’t find ballots in one Robbinsville district, three in Princeton

Ballots from four voting districts in Mercer County have gone missing after paper ballots were shuttled between polling locations and the county election board following a complete failure of voting machines in Tuesday’s election.

Robbinsville Mayor Dave Fried said that the Mercer County Board of Elections contacted the township at 5 PM today to report that ballots from one of Robbinsville’s nine voting districts “had gone missing.”

Records also show that three districts in Princeton -- all cast at the municipal building – were also not recorded as received by the election board. The missing Robbinsville ballots were cast at the Mercer County Library.

“The fundamentals of democracy is that every vote would be counted,” Fried said. “Clearly, this has yet to happen in Robbinsville, as approximately 11% of our residents’ votes have yet to be safely delivered and tallied.”

A race for the Robbinsville school board, where 103 votes separate Peter Oehlberg and Christopher Emigholz, could be affected by the lost ballots. So could a Princeton school board contest where 67 votes separate Deborah Bronfeld and Rita Rafalvovsky.

Instead, every voter is filling out a paper ballot and dropping them into the secure scanner machine storage bin. A team of a Democrat and a Republican from the Mercer County Board of Elections are collecting the cannisters that hold the votes throughout today and are scanning them at their office

Fried pledged to push county officials to find the ballots.

“We’re working with the county, which is in charge of our elections, but please know we will not rest until we get to the bottom of this unconscionable mishap, and we will not consider the 2022 election over in Robbinsville until every single ballot is counted and done so securely,” stated Fried.

The ballots could be misplaced at the Board of Elections office; they were recorded as delivered. It’s not clear how the issue would be remedied if the ballots are never located.

Dominion, the manufacturer of the voting machine, was unable to repair the glitch on Election Day.

Election officials are taking steps to protect the chain of custody of ballots throughout the process.

Mercer County Superintendent of Elections Nathaniel Walker activated a contingency for all ballots cast at all locations to be scanned at the secure Board of Elections offices

“Ballots will be scanned just as they would at the polling location,” Walker said on Tuesday. “Every ballot that has been cast will be counted, no voter will be disenfranchised, and the integrity of the election is intact and secure.”

The three Princeton voting districts include 3,211 voters. The single Robbinsville polling place handles 835 registered voters.

Report by Brazil's military on election count cites no fraud

RIO DE JANEIRO -- The defense ministry has put out a report highlighting flaws in Brazil's electoral systems and proposing improvements, but there is nothing to substantiate claims of fraud from some of President Jair Bolsonaro’s supporters protesting his Oct. 30 defeat.

The document released Wednesday was the first comment by the military on the runoff election, which has drawn protests nationwide even as the transition has begun for President-elect Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva's inauguration Jan. 1. Thousands have been gathering outside military installations in Rio de Janeiro, Sao Paulo, Brasilia and other cities calling for intervention by the armed forces to keep Bolsonaro in office.

When the defense ministry announced this week that it would present its report on the election, some Bolsonaro supporters rejoiced, anticipating the imminent revelation of a smoking gun. That didn't happen.

“There is nothing astonishing in the document,” Diego Aranha, an associate professor of systems security at Aarhus University in Denmark, who has been a member of the Brazilian electoral authority’s public security tests, told The Associated Press. “The limitations found are the same ones analysts have been complaining about for decades … but that doesn't point to evidence of irregularity."

Defense Minister Paulo Nogueira wrote that “it is not possible to say" with certainty the computerzed vote tabulation system hasn't been infilitrated by malicious code, but the 65-page report does not cite any abnormalities in the vote count. Based on the possible risk, however, the report suggests creating a commission comprised of members of civil society and auditing entities to further investigate the functioning of the electronic voting machines.

Bolsonaro, whose less than two-point loss was the narrowest margin since Brazil’s 1985 return to democracy, hasn't specifically cried foul since the election.
